She’s not ill. She’s not in imminent danger. But she is sure it’s going to happen.
Because many years ago… she’d made a promise to a stranger, in the woods. Elena’s mother was in hospital, after a life-threatening accident. The promise would keep her mother safe, but put Elena’s own life at risk, instead, when she grew up and turned thirty.
Elena put the promise to the back of her mind, over the years. But she’s twenty-nine now, and when something happens that puts her life in danger, she remembers. And she knows.
But Elena hasn’t done everything yet. She’s not brave like her daredevil friend Rory. But she’s also not ready to give up on life. Not before she’s been to Paris. She always wanted to skydive too. She’s never even fallen in love.
Without the promise of tomorrow, can she fulfil all her dreams before fate comes for her?
A completely unexpecting, romantic uplifting story, about friendship, love, and fate, perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes, David Nicholls and Faith Hogan.

Samantha Tonge is one of my favourite authors and she never disappoints, I always grab her newest release as soon as I can. The Promise of Tomorrow is full of the wit and warmth that Tonge is known for in her writing. She writes about the human condition in such a realistic way. And although it is typical Tonge through and through this story is wholly original without missing her usual charm and style.
I loved the two main characters so much. Elena and Rory are co-workers and friends. Elena decides to give Rory her spare room while his home is undergoing renovations and a true friendship blossoms. We get chapters from each character's point of view. I learned their secrets, hopes, dreams and fears. I loved how complex these characters were and their backstories explain a lot. Their journey together was an interesting one and I love that they helped each other really come alive. Their trip to Paris was such fun and an interesting turn takes place in the story while they're there.
There was so much of myself in this book because I have a lot in common with Elena. Her grandmother lives in Canada in the province of Ontario and that's where I live. She's rereading the book Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen and that's my very favourite book in the whole world and the only one I have reread a thousand times.
A lot of the book is emotional and even sad at times but ultimately it was heartwarming and it gave me all the feels and left me feeling very hopeful in the end.

EXCERPT: 'Elena stood taller. Her thirtieth birthday was looming, but a woman like her surely had nothing to fear? She swallowed. That promise would never be called in. It wouldn't. She'd made it as a child. Adult Elena wouldn't have to keep her side of the deal. She was being stupid still worrying about it, all these years later. She took a large gulp of reassuring hot chocolate as Rory swayed to music pumped out by a local DJ. He transitioned smoothly from one move to the other, not spilling so much as a sip of his drink, in a world of his own for a moment, or so it seemed. Rory lived his life as if no one was watching. Whereas the nearer her big birthday came, Elena lived hers under the close gaze of the past. It was tough working alongside someone who reflected back at you the type of life you might have led if it hadn't been for one chance meeting, when you were ten, with a stranger in a purple shawl.
ABOUT 'THE PROMISE OF TOMORROW': Elena Swan believes she’s going to die. And soon.
She’s not ill. She’s not in imminent danger. But she is sure it’s going to happen.

MY THOUGHTS: A pleasant romance (friends to lovers) story about the limitations anxiety and OCD places on lives. A beautiful cover, but it seemed far longer than its 330 pages to me.
Although Elena is a booklover and avid reader, I had trouble connecting with her character and I found the plot unconvincing. To be honest, this is a little more into the chic-lit genre than I usually venture.
I think the motivation behind writing The Promise of Tomorrow is sound, but the execution left something to be desired. There are 'information dumps' about OCD in the latter part of the book, and quite a lot of repetition throughout about the circumstances leading to Elena's anxiety and OCD.
I enjoyed Rory's character and that of Elena's grieving neighbour. Brandy and Snap, two Indian Stick Insects which are Rory's rescue pets, are cute, and I loved the way Elena talked to them, opening her heart. Elena has a kind heart, but she still didn't feel 'real' to me.
There is a wonderful 'bookish surprise' at the end of the book when Eleanor reveals to Rory where she keeps disappearing to.
There are a lot of things I liked about this book, and a lot I didn't, but I am sure that a lot of people will love this more than I did.

DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Boldwood Books via NetGalley for providing a digital ARC of The Promise of Tomorrow by Samantha Tonge for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions.
I combined reading and listening to The Promise of Tomorrow by written Samantha Tonge and narrated by Claire Storey. I was disappointed the narrator didn't use different voices for the different characters, although her voice was very pleasant to listen to.
I received a free copy of, The Promise of Tomorrow, by Samantha Tonge, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Elena made a promise when she was young and her mother was sick, that she would would risk her life at age 30, for her mother's. Now Elena is 29 and cant get the promise out of her mind, the anxiety she is feeling is overwhelming, she does not want to die yet. This was a seemly read.
"..her life had played before her, like a documentary on fast-forward – not the things she’d done, but the things she’d hadn’t."
What a beautiful story wrapped in a beautiful package. The cover drew me in but the premise really sold me on this book. I wasn't sure what to expect, whether it would be magical realism or not. It was not, if you're also wondering. It was genre-bending, in my opinion. A romantic comedy with an underlying mystery that was somewhat dark at times.
The whole time I was reading, I kept thinking of something that affected my life(I don't want to spoil) and I was so pleased that it ended up being mentioned. This really handled some delicate topics respectfully.
Elena is a successful marketing executive for a biscuit company. She's sensible and careful. She feels she has to be. When she was 10, she made a deal with a shadowy figure that would give her only 20 more years of life.
Those 20 years are coming to a close on her 30th birthday and Elena is worried. At the same time, her coworker Rory is coming to stay at her house while his is renovated. Rory is spontaneous and carefree. It should stress her out but it inspires her.
I loved all the characters! Tahoor deserves a special shout-out. They really came to life on the pages.
If Elena only has weeks left to live, she wants to stop wasting them and make memories and do the things she's always been too afraid to do.. maybe she'll even let herself fall in love. 😍
I am usually a great fan of Samantha Tonge’s writing but sadly this time the book didn’t convince me much. It took me a while to get into the story, never really warming completely to it. The only thing that kept me going was the mystery around Elena’s encounter when she was 10 and where she disappears. It gets marginally better after the first half, when the pace quickens a bit and it’s a pleasant enough story but not her usual standard ( she’s usually a lot deeper ) and not to my taste especially for the cheesy, shallow, predictable ending ( and yes, that includes the reason behind her behaviour and her disappearing). I think the idea behind it is great, the outcome a little less so. With many thanks to Netgalley, Boldwood and the author for an early copy
The Promise Of Tomorrow by Samantha Tonge when Alayna Swan was 10 her mom got a devastating diagnosis and thanks to magical intervention Alina made a promise to be repaid back by her 30th birthday. Now that she is 29 the payment is coming due thankfully her coworker Rory who recently also became her roommate is there when three different accidents that could’ve been life ending happened and was there to save her. Since making the promise Alayna has been overly careful where Rory is the complete opposite and lives life on the edge. After moving in together six weeks before her 30th birthday Rory is shocked to see careful Alina throw caution to the win an act unlike the Alena he’s gotten to know would act. From getting drunk to smoking to one night stands it seems the life she tried so hard to keep safe no longer means anything and it brings Rory to a wrong conclusion. As Elena and Rory get closer will they get close enough for her to confide in him and will he be able to save her one more time? When I started this book and got to know the characters I really wasn’t that into the book. i found the extreme opposite relationship a little too convenient but it seems the more I read the more I loved their interaction not only with each other but their coworkers and their neighbor despite the fact I guess how the book would end I still really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it.#NetGalley,#BoldwoodBooks, #SamanthaTonge, #ThePromiseOfTomorrow,
Gentle story about taking chances in life and finding connections. Elena is a 29 year old marketing employee for a biscuit company. When Elena was ten years old, her mother became very ill and Elena made a deal with a strange women in the woods to spare her mother's life in exchange for taking Elena's when she turned 30. Since that promise, Elena has lived under a lot of stress and tried to avoid any sort of danger, even refusing to fly in an airplane. With her 30th birthday coming up, she is filled with even more anxiety and sadness. Rory is Elena's coworker and her complete opposite as he seeks out adventure at every turn. When Rory's house is being renovated, he is forced to move in with Elena and is determined to bring her out of her shell.
Rory is a great character and with his sparkly shirts, sense of adventure and his refusal to care about other people's opinions, he was a perfect foil to buttoned-up Elena. I wish Elena would have been a little more fleshed out and that we would have met Rory and Elena when they first met instead of after they were friends for some time. I also thought this would be the perfect story to add some magic realism but instead everything is neatly explained and for me the story was a bit flat. Will Elena have to give up her life at age 30 and will she start living with a bit more life? Those are the questions that make up this cozy story. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this ARC in exchange for a review.
Such a sweet, heartwarming book! I love the way this author goes deep with her characters and makes them so sympathetic and relatable. Even when they do things that are frustrating, I’m still with them 100% and know they’ll find their way sooner rather than later. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
This is my first book by author Samantha Tonge and I would be keen to read more of her work. After scanning the premise in the publisher’s blurb, I was intrigued and thought it would be fun to dive into something a bit different. Without question, this is an unusual or original story that certainly kept me interested and turning the pages! There’s a bit of mystery, romance and life altering experiences related to the extreme sports. I can’t say I would have the courage to do some of the things mentioned like the deep dive bungee jump!
It is a novel about facing your fears. Learning to share what’s on your heart, too, so that you don’t carry some heavy burdens that could affect your life choices and experiences. I was eager to see the outcome and was satisfied with the results.
The chapters are divided between the two main characters Elena and Rory who share their viewpoint in telling the story. They are good friends who work together. Rory moves in with Elena when she offers him a room in her detached house while his apartment is being renovated. They get to know each other fairly well while being roommates and are quite comfortable in each other’s presence.
Elena’s life has been on hold due to an event that happened when she was ten years old. She is now approaching thirty in a few weeks. She has an unusual obsession. She is convinced she is going to die when she turns thirty at midnight. Why she believes this is quite an intriguing tale and the author slowly reveals all we need to know so we can understand her dilemma and sympathise with her. But it also makes us want to believe she will be okay and that her worst fears will not happen. In the meantime, while her hourglass is running out, we learn she wants to do everything she can that she has not tried before. This includes falling in love, taking a trip to Paris, participating in some extreme sports (sky diving, bungee jumping, etc). She is in sharp contrast to her friend Rory who she sees as being ‘brave, daring, living life spontaneously.’ She is now ‘more afraid of missing out’ of life than worrying about ‘things going wrong.’ It seems Rory rubs off on her and she begins taking risks—but not necessarily all good ones! He tries to help her see, though, it is good to try new things but she must listen to experienced extreme sports leaders and obey certain rules to be safe. She should not just throw ALL caution to the wind.
Rory’s reason for being so active is different from what she expected. He is not acting out of competitiveness but ‘chasing …a sense of being alive.’ Elena is ‘sick of being scared’ and risk assessing her every move. This drive takes her on a sometimes reckless journey but she begins to learn a lot about herself and eventually how to move forward.
The word ‘Promise’ noted in the title is an important clue to this plot. I won’t give anything away as it is important to learn of this woman’s reasons of why she is in this predicament by reading the story. I can say this: she made a promise to a stranger when she was ten and she has carried this secret/ mission / burden alone since then. Now that she is in the last months of her twenty-nineth year, she wants to make up for the fun she missed her whole life before she must face the outcome of her promise.
Rory is also a very complex person and I liked getting to know him and what makes him who he is. Little by little we learn of his family and what shaped his attitudes and led him to his ‘extreme’ interests and actions. There are some sad moments in his revelations but he has used them to his advantage to get the most out of life. He may appear spontaneous and carefree to Elena but he follows a strict form of rules to maintain safety in whatever he attempts. His movements are wise and controlled—even when he pushes boundaries. He has a respect for nature and his environment. Risk assessments are part of his activities.
These two discover a lot on their journey together, particularly in Paris, and their relationship takes on a new shape. I enjoyed watching Elena grow and it was a joyous moment when she trusts her dearest friend, Rory, with her secret. This is an uplifting story about friendship, facing and understanding the sources of your fears and having the courage to live, love and be open to the Promise of Tomorrow. 4 strong Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for a review copy.
Thank you Net Galley, Boldwood Books and Samantha Tonge for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This story is about Elena and Rory (written third person dual POV, which took some getting used to), two marketing colleagues who become friends when he moves in with her while his apartment is being remodeled.
Elena made a deal on her 10th birthday to save her mom's life by giving up her life on her 30th birthday. As her birthday looms, Elena, who is normally overly cautious, throws caution to the wind and starts doing all kinds of things that are out of character for her. As her friendship with Rory deepens, she shares her story with him and he shares personal information about himself that he hasn't told anybody at work.
This book started off slowly, but picked up about halfway through. This book is women's fiction and romance with magic elements. There are some otherworldly phenomena that occur and leave you wondering what will happen. As an avid reader, I thought I had it all figured out, but I was 100% wrong. It held my interest, but wasn't a quick read for me. I felt like I had to slog through about 60% of it before I really started to enjoy it. The remaining 40% was really good (solid 4 stars), it just took a while to get there.
Is it time you live a life you love? Elena Swan, without the promise of tomorrow, can she fulfil her dreams before fate comes to her? A romantic story, after she makes a promise twenty years ago can she keep it? Rory Bunker her colleague at work Bingley Biscuits moves into her spare room, his apartment is been renovated and due to be finished by Christmas, then turning up with a big tank two stick insects Brandy and Snap, oh dear she didn't expect three lodgers. Bonfire night and Elena is hit with a firework and her guardian angle Rory saves her so her time wasn't up yet. This book that takes this couple through a lot of tough times. I loved these two characters together. A heart warming book to touch you as you learn about the illness, and what a child goes through right up to later in life still believing. Loved it once again from this author who knows with superb writing how to make it your story.
LOVED it!! I didn't want to put it down, I didn't want it to finish. Elena and Rory..both absolutely loveable and very real characters from the start. I also love it when a main character is also a book lover, and their love of books is weaved throughout the story, so thank you...and I think I may need a Rory in my life too!
Such an honest and heart-tugging at times read, but so positively and heart-warmingly told, with so many real and believable people. Every sentence was needed and every loose end tied up. I got it and that just added to how special it was written.
Thank you to NetGalley for a digitally received copy in exchange for my honest opinion
Once I finished this book, I had to let it sit with me, and then I needed to send a message to the author as it deeply affected me. The story is so powerful that even if you only slightly recognise yourself, it will present a massive wake-up call. It’s important that I don’t give anything away, and I can promise that my experience is only similar, but the clanging bells can still be heard after over a week. Elena is the epitome of organisation and balance. Her life follows a protected path, and she actively avoids danger. Her path may be protected, but her life is not being lived. Elena seems contented with this situation until she offers her colleague Rory a place to stay. He’s a daredevil obsessed with extreme sports, constantly pushing himself to face danger. Opposites may attract, but their differences are broader and deeper than the Grand Canyon; obviously, there can be no common ground between them. Slowly, Elena becomes braver, and Rory starts to calm down, so perhaps there is something invisibly binding them. However, she must conceal the secret that she is protecting with her life. As their friendship begins to flourish, the seeds of hope spring green shoots that bind their friends together. This is a very special book that handles subjects that can be both overwhelming and yet empowering. Elena and Rory are perfectly mismatched, and I loved their friendship, particularly the way it developed in keeping with a couple of stick insects! The supporting cast had the depth that a story like this requires. Each character added a layer to the narrative, and none felt superfluous. Whilst a book based on love and friendship may seem commonplace, I can categorically say that the twists caught me in a full sideswipe. The truth of this story has the deepest roots and deserves to be told, and I cannot imagine a more beautiful telling.
Elena works at a biscuit factory – she has friends there, her ideas for improvements are respected, her opinions valued. But outside work, she lives a quiet and careful life – escaping only through her love of books – with a constant awareness that her life might be limited because of a moment in her childhood.
We slowly learn more about that pivotal moment that’s had such a life-limiting impact, and why she fears the approach of her thirtieth birthday – but things begin to change for her when she offers friend and work colleague Rory a place to stay while having work done on his apartment. He’s her opposite – flamboyant and upbeat, a risk taker with his interest in extreme sports and travel – and, as well as being fun to be with, his influence begins to rub off on her. If her time is limited, perhaps it’s time for her to live a little – leave that door unbolted, attempt some of those activities she’s always been too fearful to try (taking a plane to a destination she’s always wanted to visit, bungie jumping, see if she can find love before it’s too late). When there’s no tomorrow, it becomes important to live for today – until she finally shares her secret with Rory, and they set about finding out if she can change her future.
You might be expecting magic realism – that bizarre promise, and its consequences, along with some other unexplained details – but instead this is a book that deals very powerfully with other more serious issues, along with the strength to be found through letting other people into your life and sharing your burden, and the possibility of finding joy when all hope seems to be lost. There’s considerable depth and emotion to the story, as your understanding of Elena’s situation slowly builds – and other layers to it, particularly with the introduction of neighbour Tahoor, also barely living but for very different reasons. But there’s plenty of humour and lightness too, with Rory’s zest for life – although he has his secrets too – and their very special friendship that begins to develop into something rather more. With their care for Tahoor and for each other – and the stick insects whose wellbeing also becomes their shared concern – it’s very much a book filled with hope and love. And yes, there is a twist to the story – an unexpectedly powerful one, that caught me unawares, but sensitively and perfectly handled.
This book was unlike anything that I’ve ever read before – a really original premise, difficult subjects dealt with so very beautifully, the warmth of the bond between two very different people slowly overcoming the dread and fear and finding strength in each other, and a story about the power of love that moved me really deeply. I really loved it – and couldn’t recommend it more highly.
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My Opinion
Samantha Tonge has yet to disappoint with her writing and so I am always excited when there is a new released. This is a novel about trying to face your fears – Elena has lived with the thought that she would die before she turned 30 due to a childhood memory. Samantha has used alternating perspectives between Elena and Rory to tell the story. Can Rory help Elena overcome her fears?
This was a heart-warming tale of friendship and facing your fears, with some very relatable characters. Once again Samantha Tonge has written a charming book. With a packed plot, you will be at the end of this book long before you are ready.
‘The Promise of Tomorrow’ is the third novel that I’ve read by Samantha Tonge, and once again her writing is warm with a gentle pace and a well rounded cast of characters. Elena made a pact and she believes the final part will come true on her 30th birthday – but that’s only weeks away. Whilst initially she frets, during the course of the weeks running up to her big day, and with the help of colleague Rory, Elena starts to throw caution to the wind and tick off some of her bucket list dreams. From bungee jumping to Paris, the events come thick and fast to the bemusement of those around her. Has the sensible and over-cautious Elena learnt to be more carefree, or is there something more sinister driving her forwards?
I don’t want to give away any spoilers so I can’t say much more about the story itself! The characters are well thought out though. I didn’t warm to Elena or Rory initially for different reasons, but was rooting for each of them by the end. I loved the intertwining of different relationships between Elena and each of the other characters in the book. From friends to co-workers, parents to neighbours, and wider family and family friends. Every person had their place within the narrative and by the time they came together, I had a sense of what they looked like and the energy that passed between them.
Another point to mention is that Tonge captures so nicely the places that her characters travel to. ‘The Promise of Tomorrow’ is no different in that regard, with Paris in particular carefully sketched out in words.
I would recommend ‘The Promise of Tomorrow’ to anyone who wants to read something intriguing and heartwarming.
Samantha Tonge is a completely new author to me so when Boldwood Books offered me the opportunity to read "The Promise of Tomorrow" ahead of release I almost declined... But there was something about the cover that drew me to read the blurb and then I was intrigued.
Ten year old Elena’s mother has been in a life threatening accident that the doctors don't expect her to survive. Understandably young Elena is distraught and so she sneaks out the house to the woods. There she meets a stranger and makes them a promise which will in turn save her mother's life. But while keeping her mother safe, young Elena puts her own life at stake.
The premise of this book really drew me in and after reading the prologue I was hooked. The story then jumps to twenty years later and Elena is almost thirty, has a successful career and is doing well with her life. However the promise she made as a child looms over her, especially now her 30th birthday is drawing ever closer. This plot definitely kept me turning the pages to find out more.
I loved the characters of Elena and Rory and I enjoyed the friends to lovers vibe. While most of the story is told from Elena’s POV, Rory gets his say too and I enjoyed his journal entries. The two main characters are supported by some loveable side characters which gave me the whole found family feels.
Overall I found this to be a heartwarming and uplifting romance story with a mystical and unexpected twist. I enjoyed this authors writing style and I am keen to explore more of her novels.
Elena Swan's life is ticking away, and she's convinced that her time is running out. As her 30th birthday looms, Elena's memories of the promise resurface, and she knows she must act fast to fulfill her dreams before fate catches up with her.
This captivating novel whisks readers away on a journey of self-discovery, friendship, and love. Elena's quest to live life to the fullest is inspiring, and her relationships with her daredevil friend Rory and a mysterious love interest will tug at your heartstrings.
The author masterfully weaves together themes of fate, courage, and the power of human connection, creating a narrative that is both uplifting and romantic. As Elena races against time to fulfill her aspirations, you'll find yourself cheering her on and reflecting on your own life's purpose.
With its vivid descriptions, engaging characters, and poignant storyline, this book will resonate deeply with readers seeking a story that speaks to the heart. So, embark on this emotional rollercoaster and discover the transformative magic of Elena's journey. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and ponder the mysteries of fate – and the promises we make to ourselves and others.
A Promise to Keep is a triumph of contemporary fiction, a testament to the human spirit's capacity for growth, love, and resilience. Don't miss this unforgettable read!
This the first Samantha Tonge book I have read but, it certainly will not be the last! Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this E-Arc.
Elena and Rory are not only colleagues, but have now ended up as housemates due to renovations on Rory's property. However, both are harbouring traumatic truths from their past and Elena fears her life is ploughing towards its untimely end with no power to stop it. Elena decides to throw caution to the wind and live her last few weeks to the max. However, once logical researcher Rory catches wind that something isn't right, he does everything he can to save Elena from the cards she has been dealt.
Whilst I did find the first 25% or so a bit slow, Rory and Elena felt a bit awkward and I was getting absolutely zero chemistry, I think I also initially struggled with the 'not knowing' that is constantly dangled in front of us for almost 50% of the book.
AND THEN, something just clicked and I could not put it down! There are so many loveable characters I cannot pick a favourite (just kidding, it's the stick insects...no really!) There are so many difficult emotions and experiences dealt with in this book, and the author handles each one with the tenderness and tact it deserves. I genuinely adored this book and one of my favourite things about Elena was how he reading hobby was portrayed.
Friendship, love, loneliness & grief are all explored in “The Promise of Tomorrow”. With endearing main characters & a spooky promise that saved a life but threatens to ruin another this book makes for an addictive read.
At first glance this is a simple rom com, a story of two colleagues who work well as a team because they are complete opposites but are clearly attracted to each other. However there are so many layers that make it a special read. Aside from the aforementioned spooky and potentially life changing if not endangering promise, the story encompasses love in all it’s guises family, friends, neighbours, colleagues love that sees people of all ages through difficult times with laughter tears and caring company.
The promise itself is extremely enticing, the full details are not revealed too early on but the effects of it’s power are seen through Elena’s thoughts and actions, almost 20 years after she made it. I was left wondering about magic, fortune telling and how the fears of a child can be very real. I wanted to read on to see what exactly happened. I wanted to hug the small girl that had become a successful but scared adult.
Samantha Tonge has not disappointed me yet. Her books have all been meaningful, emotive and inspiring. This book is no exception. A five star read that left me longing to hear more.
Happy #pubday to Samantha Tonge and her newest book, The Promise of Tomorrow When Elena was ten years old she made a pact. Her mother was in the hospital fighting for her life after a serious accident. Elena went into the woods near her house and met a fortune teller and promised her life for her mothers, and it was accepted. Elena will die at thirty, the same age her mother was supposed to die at. She has never told anyone what she did. At 29 Elena had been careful and cautious her entire life and now the countdown to her last birthday is approaching. When she invites her adrenaline seeking co-worker to be her temporary roommate she realizes she hasn’t lived at all. Determined to squeeze a lifetime of living into her last weeks. Her new roommate, Rory, has had his own share of sorrows and lives his life because of them. The weeks leading up to Elena’s birthday will show both of them what it means to really live. This is one of those “the best part is a spoiler” kind of books so I won’t say too much. What I will say is I read this in one sitting because Elena and Rory were so compelling and endearing I had to know what was going to become of them. Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for letting me have a copy of The Promise of Tomorrow
In this fun new novel from Samantha Tonge, readers join Elena Swan who believes her life is almost over and that it will happen soon because when she was a child, Elena promised a stranger in the woods something to keep her mother safe and ensure her recovery after a horrible accident. Having forgotten the promise until her life is in danger shortly before her thirtieth birthday, Elena has only realized that she hasn’t lived the life she wanted or taken the risks she wanted -- including falling in love. Without a certain future, Elena must decide what dreams she wants to fulfill before it is too late. With a fascinating protagonist in Elena and a complex and deeply emotional storyline that resonates with readers, this book is brilliantly written and powerful in its ability to connect with readers’ fears about not living life to the fullest. The characters are the star of the novel, but readers will love how Elena connects with her fears and works to achieve her dreams in this brilliant new release. Poignant, emotional, and charming, Tonge’s new release is a fascinating story about life, dreams, and choosing one’s future that will resonate with readers’ hopes and fears.

I do appreciate a book that talks about the struggles of OCD but I felt like having to go through the first half of the book to get to the even semi interesting part was just too much. None of the characters really felt relatable and any romance didn't really make me feel warm and fuzzy. More like these were people that I didn't really care about. I felt that a lot of Elena's reactions to things and ways she went about things was very childish which, I can assume might be from childhood trauma but I'd think that at her grown age, she would have looked into counseling or medication because she couldn't have been completely unaware she had SOME type of mental illness like OCD. You don't get through 30 years of of your life without realize that SOMETHING is wrong when you're so adamant about making sure the doors are locked and the stove is off. It really just felt too slow for me and was kind of a slog to get through. If you're desperate for a light romance with no spice, go for it. If you're looking for a little more adventure though, I'd recommend skipping this one.

Twenty years ago Elena made a pact with a stranger in the woods to save her mother, who was at death's door after an accident. Nearly twenty years later, approaching her birthday she is convinced that she will now have to pay the price for her pact. This is a slow burn, emotional story that you're never quite sure whether there is a supernatural element or not. I liked Rory, her work colleague and temporary lodger, despite him being far more adventurous (and sartorialy aware) than I am. These two interact, helping each other grow and understand each other and gradually be aware of feelings for each other, all whilst she decides whether to fight her fate. A great supporting cast, including a pair of stick insects, helped me enjoy the book. I would give it 4.5*, but, as always, have rounded it up to 5" and would recommend it if you want something different to read. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
Elena Swan daren’t make future plans any more Because of a promise made almost twenty years before. To keep her Mum safe she made a deal And when she turns thirty her fate will it seal.
However, as her birthday nears Can she be brave and face her fears? She offers a room in which Rory can stay Whilst work on his home gets underway.
As the two get to interact Will she share her frightening fact? There’s fun and laughter between the two But romance is something she dares not do.
A emotional story, such a moving read, With great characters including those in need. Dealing with life and issues including loneliness and more As romance and relationships are highlighted and explored.
This author’s books involve issues that she so sensitively shares, Making them easily related to, ensuring readers care. A fabulous read from the beginning to end It is such a great book in which time to spend.
For my copy of this book I say a huge thank you As I share with you this, my honest review.
The Promise of Tomorrow by Samantha Tonge is an emotional, feel-good story about friendship, love, and finding the courage to truly live. At ten years old, Elena made a promise to a stranger, one she believes saved her mother’s life but left her bound to die at thirty. Now that her birthday is fast approaching, she’s starting to freak out!!! Realising she needs to squeeze every last drop out of life.
When her fearless co-worker Rory moves in as a temporary roommate, Elena finds herself both inspired and challenged. Rory’s zest for life nudges her out of her comfort zone, from trying extreme sports to embarking on a spontaneous trip to Paris. As their friendship deepens, so does her determination to face her fears—and maybe even find love along the way.
Tonge’s warm, witty writing captures the beauty of human connection and reminds us of the joy of living fully. With relatable characters and plenty of heart, The Promise of Tomorrow is a touching story about facing your fears and living each day like it truly matters.
I enjoy Tonge's heartwarming, uplifting novels, but the premise of this one was a bit strained for my taste. Elena, despite being in perfect health, is convinced that she is going to die on her upcoming 30th birthday because of a bargain she made at age 10 with a mysterious fortune teller. When her work colleague Rory moves in with her while his apartment is being renovated, they get along better than expected. Their growing friendship encourages Elena to seek out answers about her bargain, and I enjoyed the playing out of both the friends-to-lovers storyline (which is almost never done to my satisfaction, and Tonge nailed it) and the question of whether something supernatural is actually going on. I accept and appreciate the answers that were finally revealed throughout the book, but I could never quite settle in to the plot hinging around this death bargain. Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for a digital review copy.
I love this story's many layers and how immersive it is to read. Elena has always lived her life carefully, believing that she must protect what she enjoys. The first chapter reveals a little of why this is so, but it is only the beginning of this thought-provoking story. Outwardly, Rory is living his life carelessly, but as the story unfolds, you realise he, too, is constrained in his life expectations. Elena and Rory are friends; they appear opposite in most things, but as we get to know them, we see that they are similar in lots of ways that matter. I like the friendship-to-romance element of this and the deeper issues that are explored through the characters. It's humorous, poignant, romantic, and mysterious, and it is lovely to read, concluding with heartwarming positivity. I like the characters, the storytelling, and its relatability.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
I struggled so much with this book. I can't tell you the number of times I almost DNF'd but I kept trying, hoping something would click. Sadly, it didn't.
Despite Elena's near-tragic childhood, I didn't find her particularly likeable. It seemed way out of character for her to open her home to Rory, a co-worker who needed temporary housing. As her 30th birthday draws near, a date she thought she'd never make it to, she changes her thinking and becomes a risk taker, daring the odds.
There were some elements that didn't gel with me, perhaps because the fantasy genre isn't my thing. I had no idea that there would be elements of fantasy and magical thinking in this book, or I probably wouldn't have requested it. I see that there are lots of people who have really enjoyed it, I regret that I'm not one of them.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
A Heartwarming story of Second Chances and Living Life to the Fullest. A captivating tale that will tug at your heartstrings.
Centred around Elena Swan, a woman haunted by a childhood promise, the story explores themes of fate, friendship, and the importance of seizing the day.
Elena's life is upended when she realises her 30th birthday is approaching. A childhood pact with a stranger looms over her, promising her safety but also a tragic end. Faced with the ticking clock of her destiny, Elena embarks on a journey of self-discovery, determined to make the most of her remaining time.
Samantha's writing is both poignant and uplifting, effortlessly weaving together elements of romance, humour, and introspection.
The characters are well-developed and relatable, allowing readers to connect with Elena's struggles and triumphs. The story delves deep into Elena's emotional turmoil as she grapples with mortality and the fear of the unknown.
The Supporting Characters; Elena's friends and family provide a heartwarming support system, adding depth and richness to the narrative.
A must read that I couldn't put down; in fact as the story evolved, I wished I could read faster.
I highly recommend this book & enjoying it with copious amounts of tea, or your favourite hot drink of choice, & a big plate of broken biscuits! (You'll understand once you've read it!)
The Promise of Tomorrow is a reminder to cherish every moment and live life without regrets! A poignant and heartwarming story that will stay with you long after the final page.
