4⭐
Genre ~ psychological fiction
Setting ~ Wales & England
Publication date ~ August 21, 2024
Publisher ~ Boldwood Books
Est Page Count ~ 357 (45 chapters)
Audio length ~ 10 hours 41 minutes
Narrators ~ Charlotte Worthing, Sophie Dora Hall
POV ~ single 3rd & 1st
Featuring ~ dual timeline ~ present & 50 years earlier progressing to the present, neglected child, miscarriage

Siobhan is the daughter of Grace, or is she? Her chapters are told in the 3rd.

Grace has taken a tumble and broken her hip. While in the hospital it's discovered that she has cancer. She has no clue who this Siobhan is that claims to be her daughter since she can't have kids. We head back to 1974 and hear Grace's story in the 1st, present tense, which reveals a deep, dark secret that’s better left untold.

I really enjoyed Grace and James’s relationship. A man that lives on the street, he was always there for her, especially when she needed it the most. She was a strong woman and I appreciated how she stood up for herself in the workforce back in a time when it was tough to do so.

Overall, I found this to be well paced in bringing out the secret. Even though Grace’s timeline tells the story first, I didn’t feel like I was hearing it all over again when Siobhan slowly learns the truth. However, there was some repetition within Siobhan’s timeline when she was questioning things over and over again, but it didn’t bother me too much.

Narration notes:
I did not listen to this one, but am just giving the info above for reference.

Soooo many lies!

Enough for an 11-hour audiobook!

This "Who is My Real Mother?" domestic drama was absorbing, engaging, and character-driven.

WHY NOT 5 STARS?
At times, the other veered off on too many tangents.

For example, revelations about one of the minor character's PTSD was TMI and could have easily been omitted.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Charlotte Worthing and Sophie Dora Hall.

Since the book unfolded from two POVs, the dual narration was helpful and much appreciated.

Both narrators did outstanding jobs with the narration.

3.5 stars.

Not really a psychological thriller, more like family drama
An okay-ish read, didn't grip me as much as I expected it too
Twist was predictable.

Saxon is one of my favourite popcorn thriller authors and her books are always too good to be read over anything longer than several hours.

Narrated across dual timelines Saxon takes us back and forth through the past and present day, giving us glimpses into the life of Grace, from her unsettling childhood to the revelation she makes whilst under the influence of anaesthesia.

Could you actually say something like that if it wasn't true. Words guaranteed to hurt those you love the most?

My Mother's Lies is a dark and engaging read. The pace steadily changes to suit the scene, and the twists came thick and fast. The characters are solid and replete with secrets, lies and deceit.

I thoroughly enjoyed it the read and it's definitely one to recommend.

Many thanks to Rachel's Random Resources for my tour spot.

This story is told over two timelines, following in the past, Grace, her horrific upbringing and then the modern day, when she has a fall, and when asked for her date of birth, seems to give the wrong one to the paramedic. Under the influence of anaesthetic, she blurts out something that sends her daughter Siobhan on a quest to find the truth.
This is a dark portrayal of many lives that are impacted deeply by poverty and addiction on one side, and pride and desperation for things money can't buy on the other.
I loved how the truth was slowly unravalled, and there were plenty of shocking twists along the way. Grace seemed to be a victim of other people's circumstances but tried her best throughout. She always had James by her side, and despite his own difficulties, he was always there when she needed him.
This was a gripping read, one I read in one day as I found it difficult to put down.
I also think that searching ones DNA is perhaps not a wise choice. You never know what secrets you may uncover.

A gripping read, combining a psychological thriller, with an emotional family drama.

Told in dual timelines, Grace is abandoned by her mother and has to make her own way in the world. In the present day, Siobhan's mum is rushed into hospital and, delusional from the effects of her medication, tells Siobhan she is not really her daughter.

The writing is so immersive, I found myself completely drawn to these well developed characters, particularly young Grace and James, who I thought was wonderful. As the two stories came together and the truth was revealed, it was so much better than I had expected, just brilliant!

5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Diane Saxon and Boldwood for an ARC in return for an honest review.

Wow what can I say this authors books just keep getting better and better and this one was outstanding and has had me gripped and on tenterhooks with the turn of every page and have read it in practically one sitting. Word of caution do or pick up one of this authors books if you have jobs to do as once you start you won’t be able to put it down.

A story told over a dual timeline focusing on the characters of Siobhan and Grace which takes you on an emotional rollercoaster and delves into a web of secrets and lies in this edge of the seat psychological drama full of twists and turns and keeps the reader engaged and engrossed from the get go.

Beautiful acknowledgements at the end which moved me to tears.

Can’t wait to see what this author writes next

I have loved every book I have read by the author and this has to be her best yet.

I was instantly became engrossed in both timelines from the start, there were so many interesting characters, whilst I loved the leading ladies, James was my favourite, such a strong character, despite his demons, his loyalty to Grace was heartwarming 🥰

There are so many twists, a couple I did realise, but not in there entirety. This book gives such a punch, it needs to be on your TBR.

This latest psychological thriller from Diane Saxon is a real page turner. A web of secrets and lies are slowly being unravelled as Siobhan tries to digest the words her mother Grace spoke in hospital....."you're not my daughter".
A dual timeline telling Grace's story and present day this is really fast paced, True dilemmas are faced head on with possibly drastic consequences. A great read

I'm reviewing this via NetGalley, as part of a tour with Rachel's Random Resources.

This psychological thriller follows two characters - Siobhan and Grace. I connected with both of these characters in different ways. I sympathised with Siobhan, as I felt that anyone in her situation, anyone might feel as though their world was turned upside down. In spite of this, she seemed compassionate, strong and determined.

Initially, I found Grace more difficult to warm to than Siobhan, but I found it saddening to read about the struggles she faced. She narrated her experiences with such honesty that it was difficult not to feel a connection with her.

In parts, I found this quite a dark, harrowing read, but I was very emotionally invested in the story and the characters. This book was certainly a page turner, and once I became invested, it was difficult to put down.

Thank you to NetGalley, Rachel's Random Resources, Boldwood Books, and to the author, for the opportunity to read and review this.

My Mother’s Lies is an interesting psychological thriller. The book is told from 2 points of view, mother and daughter and 2 timelines. I found the timeline going back into the mother’s past to be the more engaging and interesting of the two.

At time I found the story to move a bit slowly. Especially in the beginning in the daughter's timeline. However, the story did get to a point where both perspectives converged and the outcome was satisfying.

Part of the story felt like filler and didn’t feel needed, it made the book feel longer than it needed to be. There were a few story lines that were tangentially related but not fully resolved by the end. They didn't change the outcome of the story but so much time was spent on them that having that cleared up would have enhanced the story, for me.

Overall, if you are a lover of thrillers, you should definitely give My Mother's Lies a try.

Thanks for Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

What would you do if you found out your mother fell and got seriously injured? Siobhan becomes quickly worried when she is informed that her mother did just that. For a woman who has always been healthy and fit for her age. However, things start to escalate after mum starts to wake up. Siobhan’s mum begins making comments that don’t make any sense to Siobhan.

Things such as her mum never had a daughter, and then her mum begins acting bizarre and nothing like the mum she’s always known. When questioned the healthcare professionals blamed it on the drugs. Siobhan can’t stop wondering though is any of it true, or the crazed talkings of an old woman on pain medication.

As Siobhan begins to investigate and look into her childhood and the things her mom was stating, she begins to unravel an intricate web of lies and find out who she really is. If you’re looking for a fast paced, action packed book with many elements of suspense and new things at every twist and turn then this is the book for you.

This is my first book by this author and the cover and the title is what drew me in. But the way the author writes kept me engaged from the first page till the very last. I highly recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for a good psych thriller, family drama. I also love the usage of unique names. I feel like too Often the same old names are used.

When I saw the cover of this, I was thinking it’d be a popcorn thriller, but this was such an intricate, well written psychological suspense. I can’t believe it hasn’t been reviewed more by Goodreads users.

I don’t typically like giving synopses about books, because it really is better to go into it without any knowledge of what to expect. This is one of those cases.

This is definitely a must read for those who aren’t looking for a quick and easy popcorn thriller, but love details and characters with substance.

Well written, rather slow in parts, but definitely worth the read. The slow parts actually make sense when you get towards the end, they filled out the story nicely. Although the ending wasn't really a surprise, it was very good. I love that everything fell into place, every question you may have while reading this book, is answered.

What an intriguing read! Mixed thriller elements with a family drama, My Mother's Lies is a captivating story. This story is narrated by Grace, who was abandoned by her mother and has to fend for herself in the world, and Siobhan, whose mother lets it slip that she isn't her real mother while loopy from her meds.

This was my first story by Saxton, and I really enjoyed her writing style. It was enticing, and I was reading trying to figure out how these two POVs would come together. The characters were well developed, so much so that I was truly invested in what was happening. When everything came together, I was thoroughly impressed. This was SO GOOD!

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This fabulous tense thriller is a definite 5 star review and deserves more. Author Diane Saxon has brilliantly devised a breathtaking page turner, which I devoured and couldn’t wait to see how the plot would evolve.

Set over a dual timeline the reader is introduced to a loving mother and daughter, so close that they still live on the smallholding together even now daughter Siobhan has grown up. When her mother Grace falls and breaks a hip the following days start to unlock memories of another life, which have drastic consequences for mother and daughter.

Fabulous writing and characters that you can really associate with. The dual timeline kept the reader informed with the events of the past and how they ultimately led to the drastic conclusions.

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a family psychological thriller. I will definitely be buying copies and recommending to friends.

This book was unlike anything I could have expected. I really enjoyed lots of it however the multiple time frames was a bit tedious at parts. The book starts with Sibohen's mother, Grace, breaking her hip and being rushed to the hospital for major surgery. Worried about her mother Sibohen rushes to her side only to be blindsided when her mother proclaims that she isn't her daughter and she is unable to have children. This has to be just the medicine right? Or is there some truth to Grace's delirious outburst? Confused, Sibohen is determined to get to the bottom of what is really going on with her mother and in turn with her own life. This book flashes back and forth not only between mother and daughter but also between time frames when each was younger. This gave the story a lot more depth and also a huge opportunity to talk about other issues. This was a very fast paced thriller that really kept me guessing. I loved how the reader was slowly trying to figure things out with our main characters. I was desperate to find out what really happened with Grace in the past and to see how that will affect Sibohen now. This was a thriller that really took you in all directions however the journey was amazing. I loved trying to figure out what really happened at Sibohens birth and find out what was really true. While some parts at the beginning were a little slow the second half really takes off and that is where you get invested. The ending had me flabbergasted. I loved this book and can't wait to see it hit the shelves. Really good read and unlike anything I have read lately.

A very enjoyable read. Told in dual timeline - the past telling Grace’s story from her childhood until she had Siobhan and the present where Grace and Siobhan are living happily on a smallholding until Grace has an accident and breaks her hip. Grace had a terrible upbringing but she pulled herself up and was determined to make something of herself, until a shocking event turned her life upside down!

Briefly, in the present, the ambulance arrives to take Grace to hospital and when asked her date of birth she gives the wrong date. Then later after her operation, and still under the influence of the drugs she’d been given, she seems to have had a personality transplant. The usually kind and gentle mother that Siobhan knows seems angry and unpleasant, and worst of all she makes a shocking statement that unsettles and upsets Siobhan. But she needs to know if what her mother said is true and very quickly her investigations brings the past back into their lives.

I was completely engrossed in this book from the start, there was a section near the middle where I thought it slowed down a bit, but that soon changed and the pace ramped up again. The broad storyline is fairly simple, but there are a number of big twists and turns that I really didn’t expect. My favourite character was James - I loved how, despite having his own problems, he supported Grace from the moment they met. A compelling psychological family drama with an emotional and at times dark storyline. Very entertaining read.

MY MOTHER'S LIES By Diane Saxon

She’s been lying my whole life... As if my mum breaking her hip and being rushed to hospital isn’t shocking enough for one day, now in her post-operative delirium, she’s just told me I’m not her daughter. That she has never been able to have children.
The nurse reassures me that people are often confused after a trauma. But I know this woman so well and I can tell there’s a grain of truth in what she says. Which begs the Who am I? Where did I come from?
When I dig into the truth, I suddenly stir up a hornet’s nest of secrets, lies – and possibly a crime so unfathomable – that stretches back decades.
What has my mum done?
Can I trust her?
Or has my digging put us both in peril of our lives?

😊What i liked -

✔ Mystery/Suspense/Psychological Thriller.
✔ This book is set in a dual timeline which adds to the suspense and mystery the story surrounds itself with.
✔ Grace was an interesting yet mysterious character.
✔ I liked the twists and turns the story kept giving once in a while.

🤔What could have been better -

✔ I felt Siobhan was a bit immature.
✔ Though the story kept dishing out a few twists here and there, it still felt slow. I was losing interest from time to time.

This story has a dual timeline - the past tells us about Grace's past, and the present day. While recovering from surgery, Grace tells Siobhan that she is not her daughter and that she's never been able to have children. The pace is fast in this twisted, gripping, well-written, and emotional rollercoaster. We get a well-woven web of secrets and lies. The characters were well-developed and interesting. The story is told from Grace and Siobhan's perspectives. I found this psychological thriller hard to put down.

UGH, I hate to say this, but this one was just OK for me! I kept wanting to love it but I just didn't. But I didn't hate it either. It kept going back and forth between being very good and slow for me. The "very good" parts were just that - VERY GOOD!

This story goes back and forth between two main characters - Grace, the mom, and Siobhan, the daughter. It also goes from present day to past, to way past. This was a little confusing at first but the author does a great job of clearly labeling each chapter. And I do typically love books like this!

My favorite part was Grace's story. These were the "very good" parts for me. I just wanted to read a whole book about her. I thought she was amazing! Unfortunately though I never really felt for Siobhan. I don't think we would have been friends in real life. LOL

This is not the end of my relationship with Diane Saxon though. I absolutely loved "The Good Twin"., which I gave an amazing 5 stars!

So I definitely will give her another try. Please judge by my review alone. Others, you, might love this book! So, give it a try and judge for yourself. There are a few really good twists in here! :-)

I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from Rachel's Random Resources - Thank You!!
