This very interesting installment in the Mitchell brothers adventures is set in an Indigenous community, Tumbling Waters, where the brothers have gone to spend a (very adventurous) week or so with their friend Sammy. The novel was vetted by an Indigenous person, which is important because the story is set in 1936, so it is often difficult to balance the realism of the time with a more enlightened view than the worst characters display. Overall, McFarlane does a great job of telling the story while also sneaking in bits of Indigenous history and stories of Indigenous sports heros amongst all the adventure, a powwow, and a lacrosse tournament.
