Playing the Field #4

Playing to Win

Rate this book
She only wants a winter fling with no promises. But rules are there to be broken.

Madison

After being jilted in Kentucky, playing for Calverdale Ladies in England was a chance to escape and spend Christmas alone, avoiding my feelings.

Which is how I’ve ended up snowed in at a Welsh pub with a retired rugby player who’s hot enough to thaw me out.

But when the snow’s gone, so am I. I won’t let another man in, not even one as gorgeous as Geraint…

Geraint

Running the pub, I’ve had flings with guests, but never one as sexy as Madison.

Too bad she’s so closed off. For both our sakes, we’ve agreed to keep our relationship physical. No attachments. No regrets.

Which is good, because I promised my dad I’d hold on to the Dragon Inn, no matter what. So I’m fine with no commitments, because I can’t ask a woman with a brilliant career in London to give everything up to be with me, in the middle of nowhere. Can I?

Playing to Win is the fourth book in the Playing the Field series—addictive romances full of heart and steam, perfect for fans of T L Swan.

Revised edition: Previously published as Melting the Mountain Man, this edition of Playing to Win includes editorial revisions.

Surprisingly, i have liked the book?? I mean, i was hooked by the first chapters and then i just keep going.

The plot is fine, the characters are good, not great, just good. And... the end is a meh, but idk, i managed to finish the book without losing the main story 🙂‍↕️

I loved the atmosphere of this last book: cosy and warm, in a small town in Wales at Christmas. I loved every moment of it.

I really liked Lana: complex, endearing, funny, a strong temper, slightly grumpy. I loved seeing this broken, lost heart in need of a break from everyday life, grow. She mends and heals her heart, gains self-confidence, builds her family and transforms her defensive, solitary shell.

I fell in love with Geraint : a Welsh golden retriever who is tender, welcoming, funny, protective, selfless and dedicated to his family, loving completely and without false promises. They are polar opposites but complete each other and push each other forward, to accept the past, to forgive and to know what they really want to embrace their future.

It was full of introspection, pain and suffering, forgiveness, second chances, self-rediscovery, friendship and family.

The book's vibe was like a warm blanket on a cold winter's day: comforting, soft. We dive right in, yearning to get to know the characters, to stay close to them, to discover more, and to never want to leave this family we feel part of. A perfect series to read on an autumn or rainy day.

After being left at the alter, Maddison, a professional soccer player, decides to escape to spend Christmas alone. She booked the last available room, in an inn with very bad reviews, where she meets Geraint. He isn't looking for any commitment, because he is entirely committed to running his father's inn.
This black cat/golden retriever romance is book 4 in the Playing the Field series. It's the first book I read in the series, but I didn't feel like I've missed anything since they are all interconnected standalones. I've read this series being compared with T L Swan books. They may be as steamy, but I think the ressemblance ends there, at least for this book. I am not a fan of FMCs who are "absolutely done with men" and then fall for the first man they happen to stumble upon. I hated the third act break-up, based on miscommunication and assumptions and unsaid things... All in all, though, I did enjoy the read and the Chrismas feel to it!
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you NetGalley, Montlake and Sasha Lace for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was not sure what to expect since I didn’t know either main character going into this book (which I haven’t experienced in a series) but I was pleasantly surprised.

Madison and Geraint were adorable. Maddie was understandably “broken” and standoff ish. Geraint was awkwardly sweet and so patient.

I enjoyed their progression to get together although the timeline was short so it’s a little crazy but luckily crazy makes a fun story!

The Welsh vocab lesson at the beginning of the book seemed daunting but the words were used in a way that helped describe them without bringing me out of the story.

I think this was my second fav book of the series which is crazy since the other characters from the series were only in the first 10% and last 15% of the book.

Open door.
Running away from heartbreak.
Just a fling, only physical.

4th in this series and so good!

Madison is asked by Gave to join the Calverdale ladies soccer team. She's from the US, so this is a huge boost to her ego. Still dealing with her recent betrayal by her fiance, she's not sure she should or even if she wants to. She meets Her Aunt in Wales and he just might be what she needs to kickstart her mood.

I love how real Sasha's characters are, I feel as if I know them personally!

Will she click with her new team, or just keep going through the motions? Can Her ain't trust her to not be interested in his notoriety? They each have issues to deal with and aren't sure this is real or just temporary.

I'm looking forward to book number 5 that's set to be released in the fall!

"When I take you to bed, you'll remember every minute."

They were both struggling and looking for themselves again in the chaos of life. And while doing so they ended up finding each other at the perfect time.

Geraint and Maddie were absolutely made for each other and it only took them 2 weeks and a small separation to realise that. These two were written in the stars.

Both suffering from heartbreak; Geraint's an old ache while Maddie's was a fresh burn, they found company and warmth in each other.

An absolutely lovely, cozy and heartwarming story of finding love in the most unlikely person. I feel so warm on the inside after reading their story 🤍✨.

Liked the book

This book was a great ending to the series. If you love sports romance with the FMC is the sportstar with some spice you'll love the book. I have listened to the audiobook and must say I love characters with accents. The narrators did a wonderful job. My only problem was with the FMC her inner monologue got to me sometimes. But I can definitely recommend it.

She’s left at the altar. He’s stuck running his family’s inn trying to keep it afloat. A friends-with-benefits deal wasn’t supposed to get messy, but feelings had other plans. A sweet, satisfying end to the Calverdale Ladies series!

This one wasn’t as good as the rest… as soon as she declared that I knew you were trouble was her favourite Taylor song 😔 that was it. Sasha could have closed her eyes and scrolled through her whole discography for any other song to show she’s a fan. Cute Welsh representation tho 3.5🫶🏼🫶🏼

I AM NOT CRYING, YOU ARE CRYING.

okay, it’s me. I’m crying.

I knew I was going to love this one because I loved all the others. This was like a warm hug on a cold winter night, i wanted to stay in its embrace longer than I was able to. Madison and Geraint were incredibly different but complimented eachother in a way that was pure perfection.

I need ten more of these books, please and thank you. 🖤

My favourite in the series! I loved the snowy Welsh countryside and rural pub setting, the black cat/golden retriever energy of the protagonists, the found family vibe of the supporting characters, the parallel in emotional journeys of the mc's and the way the author tied the series up with connections to the earlier books.

The narrators for this series have consistently been top shelf. They have done incredible jobs bringing each story to life and I was eager to hear Geraint and Maddison telling me about themselves. Having never listened to a Welsh narrator it took me a few minutes to sink into the pacing and accent of James Ford, but he was perfect as G! Amelia Hugh was so believable as Maddy, delivering her pain and emotional distance perfectly. Both did fantastic work with the array of characters, accents and were convincing when voicing the opposite sex.

This is an absorbing story, infused with introspection and growth. Two very different people brought together by fate and a snow storm, who have no intention of forming a connection - but we all know about good intentions and roads to hell! The author remains true to her style and there are many layers and lessons to this story, built around characters with hidden pain to be worked through and resolved. That is the aspect I most enjoy about Sasha's books - she gives us people in trouble and lets their strength and resilience shine through, as they find their way to a solution, relying on their own tenacity plus support from a special someone.

One of the rawest lines I have ever read is in this book and it was enough to stop me in my tracks. Geraint lays his heart bare and makes himself incredibly vulnerable when he says to Madison " 'Just let me be with you until you leave me.' " But then to counter that there are the lighter notes of the Tom Jones jokes!

On a cheeky note, I luuuurved how the author used the term "beast" to describe Geraint's size! Sigh!! If that doesn't help the imagination, I don't know what will!

This really is a wonderful Christmas story, with a likeable couple in a beautiful setting earning their hard won HEA. The author has tied it all together by finishing the soccer season with the Calverdale Ladies in a very enviable position on the table (as Gabe promised Miri 3 books ago), Reece cooking/hiding in the kitchen (much to Skylar's affectionate amusement) and Lana no longer the wild child but a caring step-mum. As always, I recommend anything Sasha Lace writes!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to review this book.

I want to read other books by this author, that says something, right?

Geraint, a former rugby player, runs a pub in Wales, not particularly successfully but since his father’s death he feels he owes it to the man who was always there for him. Lana experienced a broken heart and, if we’re being honest, a lot of embarrassment and she shut herself off barely functioning, until the owner of a football team (soccer for some of you) comes to her and asks her to play for him in the UK. She is not interested in that and thinks she’s lost her edge because her mind isn’t in the game, but she knows she needs to do something. She takes up the offer, plays a bit and when Christmas break approaches she doesn’t want to go home (the US). She decides to go to Wales and ends up booking a stay at Geraint’s pub. Which she discovers is his after he helps her from being stranded in a blizzard and she runs down the pub and its staff. But we all know this is going to change…..

Look, I am a great lover of forced proximity and the broken man/woman tropes. The way these characters relate to each other, even when it wasn’t romantic was lovely. There are elements of found family, or at least allowing people in and I thought that was nice for both characters. Yes, there is probably a hint of instalove/instalust, but this isn’t an issue for me because it happens people, whether you like it or not, sometimes people meet, click, and that’s it.

This is a cozy love story. I loved Geraint and thought Lana grew as a character.

I really liked the plot of this one!

I love a book about a professional female athlete, so this series has already got that covered. It had a really interesting dynamic that I'm sure many female pro athletes face - she wants a family, but loves her sport. Because she wants a family, she got caught up in a whirlwind romance and was left at the altar after a quick engagement. To escape her humiliation she takes a position on a professional women's soccer (football) team in the UK. She's not ready to head back to LA for the holidays to face her family, so she takes a solo trip to a small town with a run down inn and falls for the golden retriever inn keeper/retired rugby player.

She gets freaked out when she falls for him in two weeks after thinking she wasn't even over her ex-fiance yet and flee's back to the UK.

I really liked the plot of this one, however I struggled with the internal monologue of the FMC at times. I found her to be very whiny and she definitely came off as rude to the absolute marshmellow of a MMC in the beginning.

The MMC was an absolute sweetheart. Although some of his ideals were a little old fashioned or outdated, I liked that he was open to learning and growing to help his late father's legacy live on and improve the place.

The narrators did a good job - it wasn't an especially outstanding or memorable performance by any means, but they got the job done without anything worthy of complaint.

Thank you to Brilliance Publishing and NetGalley for the ALC.

Final installment in the Playing the Field series, but this story works well as a standalone.

Unlike the first three books, this one takes place with new characters and is primarily set in Wales over Christmas—I was not expecting a holiday romance when I picked this up, but I’m definitely not mad about it!

Madison is Gabe River’s newest recruit to the Calverdale’s women’s football (soccer) team and hails from Kentucky where just was just jilted at the alter on her wedding day. Now in England hoping for a fresh start, she’s struggling to connect to her team and is grieving her old life. Uninterested in spending Christmas with her family or team members and inspired by her parents stories of their wedding in Wales, Madison decides to spend two weeks at a small town Welsh inn/pub.

Geraint is an ex-professional Welsh rugby player who retired after a career ending knee injury and now runs the inn/pub he inherited from his father. The beloved inn is struggling to make ends meet, especially between his medical bills and exwife bleeding him dry of all his professional sports earnings. Imagine his surprise as the sole guest in the inn over the holidays might be just the person he needs to thaw out his heart…and maybe he could be what she needs too.

Both characters in this novel were a little grumpy, but it was cute to see them come together. The HEA is hard earned and all the more satisfying as both FMC and MMC are pretty stubborn.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publishers for this eARC in exchange for my honest review!

Playing to Win is the 4th and final story in the Playing the Field series. It follows new transfer from LA, Maddison, as she looks to escape the pain and humiliation of being jilted. She moves to the UK to play for Calverdale Ladies, but can't escape her sadness, and decides to spend Christmas in a small town in rural Wales where her parents married. The inn owner, Geraint Maddock, a 6'6 ex rugby player, is facing closure, and is desperately trying to save his father's legacy.

This was such a lovely end to the series! We don't see as much of the other Calverdale ladies, only getting a few glimpses of them, but it tied everything off nicely.

There was quite a lot of angst, with Maddie still suffering from her breakup, and Geraint uncertain what his future holds. They both help each other figure out what they want and need with plenty of spice in between!

The narration was performed in dual style by Amelia Hugh and James Ford. Both are new to me narrators and I really enjoyed them! Given the variety of accents, Maddie is from Kentucky, Geraint Snowdonia, and the rest of the English characters, there was a wide breadth of accents on display! Overall they were done well, and I would listen to both narrators again!

Overall, I've really loved this series, and I'm so happy to have found another UK author with amazing audios!

The story of two characters who found themselves unexpectedly drawn to each other captured my attention from the start. Their chemistry was undeniable, yet both grappled with their own fears and reservations about the prospect of a relationship. It was clear that neither wanted to fall for the other, which only intensified the tension between them.

As their lives intertwined, I was captivated by the nuances of their push-and-pull dynamic. The author skillfully portrayed their internal struggles, making their reluctance feel real and relatable. Every conversation was charged with unspoken emotions, leaving me eagerly anticipating the next turn in their journey.

What resonated with me most was how this story reflected the unpredictable nature of love. It served as a reminder that sometimes, despite our best efforts to resist, connections can form in the most unexpected ways. The journey these two characters undertook was filled with moments of humor and vulnerability, highlighting how love can challenge our assumptions and beliefs.

Ultimately, this tale left me contemplating the beauty of unforeseen connections and how the heart often knows best, even when we hesitate to embrace it. It beautifully illustrated that spontaneity can lead to some of the most meaningful experiences in life.

I won Playing to Win in a giveaway, and let me just say—it felt like I hit the jackpot! Knowing it’s a romance, I was prepared for the emotional rollercoaster, but I absolutely loved the slower build-up. It wasn’t rushed or over the top; instead, it felt thoughtful and let me truly savor the growing connection between the characters. And yes, my heartstrings? Totally pulled. 🎻💕

What made this book extra special for me was the incorporation of Welsh culture. It added a unique and meaningful layer to the story, making it stand out from other romances I’ve read. The traditions and references were a delightful touch that warmed my heart even more. 🏞️✨

Overall, this was a cute, feel-good story that left me smiling. Perfect for cozying up with and letting yourself just feel all the warmth. Would definitely recommend! 🥰

Ahh, how good was this!!! That ending just rounded the series off nicely, too. Sad it's over, I've loved being in the midst of Calverdale.

Madison and Geraint were great characters! They were both likeable and relatable. Madison was grumpy, funny, and had this hard exterior that came with a broken heart however underneath she was vulnerable, scared of letting the team down, caring, and just wanting to be loved. Geraint was ya typical man's man, a gentle giant, who despite also having his heart broken only wanted love, he was protective and loyal especially to his dad's honour, his staff and his community. They were made for each other even though they were different in so many ways.

As always, Sasha provides spice and a whole lot of falling in love, family/friend dynamics, self-discovery, forgiveness, and so much more. These books have been like becoming a part of a new family, and im super sad it's the end.

But there's always, always the ability to read them all again =)

This book was way different from the first three books in the series, yet I strangely enjoyed it!

Rather than the story taking place within the women's league as the others do, we have the FMC, Madison, who desperately needs an escape getting snowed in a Welsh pub with Geraint, the MMC who almost immediately wants her. This story almost reads as a side-quest honestly. We get glimpses of the characters from the previous books in the series, and while Madison does spend some time in the women's league as I had expected, nearly the rest of the book takes place while she is off on her holiday.

Overall, I enjoyed the read. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but I just didn't connect with it on an emotional level as I did the previous books. Madison was a great character. She was avoiding her feelings, which the same girl, but she was very back and forth at times and that kept frustrating me. Maybe it was the lack of communication because everything felt uncertain at times and I honestly wasn't sure how long it would take for these two stubborn characters to get it together.

Geraint was adorable and really stole the show for me. That ending where he leaves the pub to go after her? Solid. 10/10. Would read that scene again. Everything leading up to that moment just really solidified my feelings towards this man. I wish he would have grown a pair a lot sooner, but at least the angst made the reward at the end (them finally getting together) worth it!

This is a 4.25 star read. I definitely enjoyed the book and had fun reading it but i didn't like how closed off she was at times. It felt like they weren't connecting as much. Some moments were also a little cringe and the book in general didn't not give off five star read vibes still it was very fun and a fast paced read. I would have preferred to see more of them after they finally got together like we did with the other couples. The spicy scenes were amazing in all of the books but the best were in the third. I will say you don't have to read all of them in order but it will make you connect with the characters more. Another reason why i didn't enjoy this book as much is because we didn't see any of her in the other books.

I can't believe it's over 😭 I'm absolutely obsessed with these Calverdale ladies and their golden retriever beaus. They have made my insides all gooey time and time again and Gerailt was no different. This Welsh Wonder was so dang sweet and perfect for Maddie and I loved them both to bits.

While I was ever so slightly disappointed we didn't get much time in England with our other besties, the time we did get there was so perfect I forgave Sasha rather quickly. This story takes place mostly in snowy Wales, where G and Madison learn to love again and find themselves while they're at it.

I don't know what I'm going to do now that I've not only finished this series, but also Sasha's backlist... But I'm so excited to see what's next for her.

I am not sure if I am ready to say goodbye to this series or soccer team. The female sport romance has been a refreshing change.

This story was a gorgeous example of how relationships going wrong can have a profound impact on us, but how it can also shine a light on what is real and what is fake, what true love looks like, and how you find it in the weirdest of places. This was a perfect finish with a journey from the southern USA to the UK and specifically Wales. The growth of the Welsh golden retriever and the American black cat was just wonderful to read. The spice was glorious and the ending was exactly what we needed.

Big thanks to NetGalley, Montlake and Sasha Lane for a copy of this book. This is my honest review.

Such a sweet wrap-up and slight side quest outside the club!

American soccer player Madison has been recruited for the Calverdale Ladies, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for her to make an escape. England proves to not be exactly what she needs, so she takes a little trip out west to Wales for the holidays for a little staycation and finds just exactly what she’s looking for (a former rugby champion giant mountain of a Welshman).

This was a cozy holiday story with some of the same themes as the rest, but also a great look into the other side of being a soccer superstar: the pressure on and off the pitch, and how to handle that. I thought this was so sweet!

Thank you so much to Sasha Lace and NetGalley for a chance to read this in exchange for an honest review!

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Playing for the Win by Sasha Lace? Certified 5-star, full-body-swoon romance.
This book had everything I want in a sports romance—banter, tension, chemistry that crackles, and characters you root for HARD. The dynamic between the leads? Flirty. Fun. And deliciously slow-burn in all the best ways.

I loved how Sasha Lace gave depth to both characters—they’re not just hot athletes or love interests, they’ve got real struggles and growth. And the emotional moments? Hit just as hard as the spicy ones.

Honestly, it gave me that warm, giddy, can’t-stop-smiling feeling the whole way through. Like… this is what reading romance is supposed to feel like.

5/5 stars. If you love sports, sass, and seriously swoony scenes—read it immediately.

These books are like a drug - i am addicted to both the stories and the way that Sasha writes. She has become an auto-buy author and I can not wait until the Edited version of Pitching My Best Friend comes out. This was a different type of story from the other but that did not detract from my enjoyment, we had a different location and this allowed for us to see a bit of life in Wales and the struggles that Madison has been through. I am also saying this is my second favourite story of the series. I can not wait to see what Sasha Lace comes out with and I will be there on day one to get this. Now to go and buy the other 3 books to have as book trophies on my shelves.

Thanks the NetGalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review. This was a different twist than what the reader was used to in previous books as both main characters were brand new. Madison is an American who was scouted by Gabe. Madison is going through her own heartbreak and distances herself from the team, running to a Welsh Inn, near where her parents got married. There, she meets Geraint, an ex-rugby player, who’s attempting to make ends meet with the inn.

Despite not knowing anything from previous books of Madison or Geraint, the author does a great job of making sure the reader has everything and moves the story along fantastic. I fell in love with these two and loved the awkwardness/shyness between them. One part absolutely melted my heart and I fell hard for them as a couple. Highly recommend this book.

2⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for a copy of Playing To Win.

Madison is recovering from being left at the altar when she is approached by Gabe Rivers to play football in England. She decides she needs a change so she goes. She ends up spending Christmas in Wales at an Inn owned by Geriant. They end up falling for each other but Madison is scared to commit so she leaves him for her new life in England. But she is trying to figure out if she is truly happy.

This is the fourth and last book in the series. Again it was just an okay read for me. It was hard to get into this book.

Maddie decides to take the job playing for the Calverdale Ladies in England after her husband -to-be leaves her at the altar. She can't seem to get it back together. She goes to Wales to a little Inn for Christmas. She gets caught in a snowstorm. G who owns to Inn where she is going rescues her. Geraint is about to lose the inn and pub that his father ran before him. Their backgrounds are similar as far as what has happened to them. Can Maddie overcome her feelings to let others in? Can she get back on her game? Maybe she'll find out in her new life.
