One never realizes how large their world is until they struggle to protect it.
Her entire life, Iya has been pursued by the Rangers, who despise her people for the fire in their veins. She has lost everything to their hatred, and now the fate of Uriu hangs in the treacherous balance. The Emberlings are dwindling in numbers, causing unleashed chaos that threatens not only Englewood but the Meadows of Harvanth as well.
Malcolm Cabe is fueled by hatred as he sets out to annihilate the fire-wielding Emberlings responsible for his father’s death. However, his mission takes an unexpected turn when he saves Iyana, a secretive girl haunted by a heartrending past.
Iya must keep her identity hidden from Malcolm and the other Rangers because if they discover who she is…death awaits her. But if the truth is never told how can they find the strength to forgive and unite? Decisions need to be made, and the wrong ones could lead to the destruction of all of Uriu.

Wow, I can't believe this book has been out for a year this week! That's insane. A story that started bouncing around my head eight years ago finally made it to the page and then into a book with an amazing cover by my sister, Jaiden Phillips!
I want to thank everyone who made this possible! To all of you who have read Emberling or added it to your tbr! You are making my author dreams come true!
Emberling has grown and evolved from the original story. Would you believe me if I told you the finished book is nothing like I had originally envisioned the story? For starters, the original was supposed to be MG standalone, which evolved into a YA standalone...that is now a YA series with book 2 releasing on March 16th, 2026! Then there are so many other details that have changed, such as the Emberlings themselves and even Malcolm who was originally supposed to be a little boy, but he quickly grew into a man once I nailed down the perfect storyline.
For those of you wondering about the content of the book (such as violence, magic, romance, etc) this review is for you! Check out the content notes below:
Language: None! There are a few instances where I say a character cursed, but never any bad words.
Magic: No. I know, the fire on the cover...let me explain. Emberlings are born with the ability to create creatures out of fire and it is a gift from Elohim (God). It is not something that anyone else can learn how to do. It is simply a natural state of being for a fantasy race in my fantasy world. The same is true of the Wavelings in the story. If you have any questions about it feel free to reach out. I'm always willing to answer questions.
Violence/Gore: This is a fantasy, and a high-stakes fantasy at that...so yes, there is violence but I do my best to keep everything super clean. I'm a queasy reader, it doesn't take much to turn my stomach so what I write is the bare minimum. The characters get hurt, some characters die, there are mentions of death, murder, burns, and wounds. But nothing overly graphic. The Giants are pagan and serve false gods, but they are a minor part of the plot in book 1 (which can be read as a standalone!).
Romance: Because I know some of you came here just for that. XD There is no smut, I would even say no spice...it's a sweet slow-burn romance. One kiss, two forehead kisses, and some hugs and handholding with the focus being on the internal character of the characters, such as Malcolm noticing Iya's kindness and Iya admiring Malcolm's protective nature. I did my best to base their relationship on more than just physical appearance.
So, if you made it through the content warnings, I'd love it if you gave Emberling a try! . . . She has fire in her veins. He has hate in his. The fate of their world hangs in the balance.
5 stars. When I was first approached to read and endorse this book, I was frankly hesitant. I don’t read magic, and I wasn’t too sure about reading a book with people who have fire in their veins. But as the author was perfectly willing to explain, the Emberlings are not magical—it’s very specifically stated in the book—and it is merely a normal state for imaginary normal beings in an imaginary country. Satisfied of this, I was willing to read it, because I’ve really enjoyed all Kaytlin Phillips’ books! And I was not disappointed.
So, first off, setting. I’ve already noted the ability of the Phillips sisters in world-building, in Kaytlin’s debut novel World of Silence and the girls’ combined Dragon Prince Chronicles. Here again, I was blown away by the creativity. So basically, the regular people live in the meadows, and the Emberlings, who are normal people except that they have fire in their veins, live in the forest as shepherds, keeping the beasts safely in so they can’t harm people. On the other side of the forest the Dwarves (who didn’t show up) live in caves, and the Wavelings (of whom only one appears) live by the ocean, being people just like the Emberlings but with water instead of fire. And finally, somewhere out there is the giants. The author did a great job creating the different cultures and country customs. I want a book all about the Waveling gladiator—and more about the giants. Speaking of which, I loved the slight borrow from the Romans with the arenas and games! And all the plants and animals that filled the land were fantastic.
The characters were another of my favourite parts, particularly because of how un-cliché they were. Iya was a shepherd, a protector, but completely feminine, not even the typical sword-wielding lady soldier, and not the usual “chosen one/last hero” either. Malcolm started off as a total psycho, determined to eradicate any and all Emberlings—I mean, the man was basically a murderer!—and over the course of the book his redemption arc unfolded and it was beautiful. So well done. Ben was the stereotypical perfect (truth-talking) sidekick and I wouldn’t have him any other way. Duncan was the sacrificial last-minute hero. The King was a very realistic stubborn monarch with his own ideas of justice. And Malcom’s family was darling. Finally, our villain carried out an excellent moral.
The plot was delightful. I can’t handle all suspense, but this was just the right type and length for me. It started with a bang and kept going; I was anguished right at that 50% where it really seemed everything was over but it was SO worth it, and the climax wasn’t even near after all. I couldn’t put the book down! It was so gripping. The romance was slow-burn, slight, and cute; and I LOVED the personal arcs the characters travelled. Malcolm, in particular, started out a boy and ended a man. The ending wrapped everything up so well BUT left plenty of openings for the next book in the series… yay!… and for a fantasy novel, I felt like this was pretty unique and realistic.
But my favourite part of the whole book was the themes. I LOVE how Iya, just like Rasil from Rose of Fate, was so firm and unshaken in her faith even at the point of death. It’s a popular theme in christian fiction to make characters doubt heavily there, which is of course very realistic, but it doesn’t have to the ONLY reality, and I am THRILLED by how over and over Iya kept reassuring herself that the Lord’s plan was perfect, despite what it required of her. Hands down my favourite part of the book. I also loved Malcom’s excellent redemption arc, as aforementioned, and how he and Iya both finally realized they were counting on themselves instead of God. Finally, I really appreciated the whole book’s message. Very simply, because of the actions of 3 rogue Emberlings, the other inhabitants of the land decided they were demons and to kill them all. I love how the author discussed not only the immorality of this idea but also the political and natural repercussions. The topic was handled SO well. I’m not sure if it was an allegory, but it sure was a needed discussion that made me think a lot.
I am so eager for the next book in this series. I can’t wait to see the rebuilding process commence. So, here’s my official endorsement: If you love deep Christian themes mixed with good clean excitement and suspense, or you’re a fan of unique but nonmagical fantasy elements, this is the book for you!
A Favourite Quote: We were losing. It wasn’t going to be enough. I wasn’t strong enough. I wouldn’t be able to save my people or prove myself to Malcolm. We were all doomed to die. All of us slaughtered because I couldn’t find a stupid, stupid flower. I banged my fist on the packed earth. “You were never enough, but I always am.” The words washed over me, reassuring and balming to my wounded pride and shattered heart. Could it be true? Was it never really up to me? “It was never about you, Iya… but always about letting Me move through you! Surrender, child, surrender, and let Me guide the way.” A Favourite Beautiful Quote: Clouds scuttled across its surface, creating a dance of shadows upon the ground below. Stars peeked through like shy children afraid to show their bright faces. A Favourite Humorous Quote: “I’ll wake them, but Duncan won’t be happy.” “He doesn’t have to be happy. He just has to be in the saddle.”
*I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*
Emberling is an entrancing tale of faith, danger, and action with its unique world, exceptional plot, and endearing characters. Whether you’re looking for a tale of gentle romance or a story filled with nail-biting suspense, Emberling is the book for you.
This book definitely earned five stars. I love the characters, the worldbuilding is fantastic and complex, and Phillips crafted a tale that will run you through every emotion. If you or someone you know enjoys Christian YA fantasy, you definitely need to purchase this book.
Today is release day for Emberling by Kaytlin Phillips! I had the pleasure of reading an ARC copy of Emberling, and here is my review of it.
In case you didn't know, Emberling is a Christian fantasy novel with clean romance. It has suspense and is very fast paced, plus there's horses (because who doesn't like horses?)
The Emberlings are a race of people with the power of fire in their veins. It is literally such a cool, powerful gift, and one of the things that drew me to this book. And I absolutely adored Iya's perspective on her gift and what it should, and shouldn't, be used for.
"Emberling fire was sacred. A bond between them and Elohim, a gift to be used for the good of all." (Page 33)
"If I died in the games, then I would die without abusing the gift Elohim had entrusted to me.
"Perhaps they thought an Emberling would be quite the show in the arena, but they would find they were wrong. I'd rather die than betray Elohim's trust in me." (Page 34)
"Poppa's warning rang in my ears. 'Never let your fire gain control in your anger or fear, for one wrong move could destroy you forever.'" (Page 41)
I related to this perspective because I think that should be our perspective on the gifts God has given us. Maybe not the fiery flames of an Emberling, but whatever He has gifted us with or called us to, should not be taken lightly and should be treated with respect. We shouldn't use it in our anger or rage, and we should only use it to bring beauty, not devastation.
As for Malcolm, I had a harder time relating to him because of his very deep seated bitterness and also his fear of horses, especially because I didn't understand it at first. Sorry Malcolm 😳 I'm like Ben, why wouldn't you like horses? BUT later on, I came to understand it better and to have sympathy for him.
Speaking of "Benkendon" 😉 (if you know, you know), their friendship / brothers in arms relationship was so fun. Ben was the perfect side kick, always having Malcolm's back but also not letting him walk off a cliff. He's a little less serious than Malcolm, a nice balance to Malcolm's serious nature.
"There was a good reason I'd always been in charge of our duo: Ben had horrible plans. In fact, most of Ben's 'plans' consisted of merely winging it and hoping for the best." (Page 45)
See what I mean 😏 But seriously, Ben is the best. And I did come to understand / relate to Malcolm better, especially in the second half. (In the first half, I felt like clocking him over the head a time or two, but he came around.) His toughness, his grit, is something you cannot underestimate. He pushes through so much for those he loves, and he is absolutely determined to keep them safe. He also fears failing that responsibility, something I understood.
Now, speaking of those he loves... The romance went a little faster than I expected it to, but that's okay.
"But I shook my head, I didn't have time for love. "Besides, that wasn't what this was. I just wanted to keep any more harm from befalling such a gentle soul. She deserved better than the hand she had been dealt." (Page 81)
Sure Malcolm, sure, whatever you want to tell yourself... 😏
I'm discovering I'm not really a fan of the concealed identity trope, because everything that is built on deception comes crumbling down and I long for it happen so that then we can get to building a relationship on truth. At the same time, there's always the aspect of "Ohhh, it's so ironic she said that because this" sort of thing, so I don't hate it overmuch. In this book, when everything crumbles, it really crumbles cough, cough. Which then swings us into a pretty intense second half.
Because of that, I do enjoy the second half more than the first half. That, and well, the unique plot. Because things really, really heat up and it is awesome. And terrifying. As all good plots are. Also an unexpected, trouble maker of a villain pops up that I came to despise. And we get to see more of Iya's unique gifts as an Emberling.
This book is has some pretty original ideas and world building. For instance, the Meadows of Harvanth. Some of the book was set in the Engle forest, yes, but a lot more was set in the wide, rolling meadows, which is something you don't see a lot of in fantasy. Rolling plains of grass are something I'm familiar with, a setting I enjoy. There's something about the wide, vast emptiness... Anyhow. The role the Emberlings played was unique, different, and what they're fire was not for destruction but protection. A protection very necessary to Uriu.
I also enjoyed the heavy role the horses of the rangers played. Shar is awesome <3 There were a few minor things that made me go, "Uhhh, I'm really not sure about that" accuracy wise, but it wasn't bad at all. Nothing that made me cringe too hard, which is saying something. If horses are in fantasy, they're either not mentioned hardly at all, OR they're involved in an unrealistic way, but Emberling fell into neither of those traps.
As for faith and themes, those were strongly prevalent. Elohim is frequently mentioned and referenced, both main characters believe in Him. The theme that we should not take the role of God's judgement in our own hands was prevalent, and not one I see a whole lot of in other books. Also, the theme of trusting God's plan even when you just can't see... When you don't understand why He allows what He allows. But trusting Him enough not to take judgement into your hands... Either judgement of a situation, or of a person.
And forgiveness. Don't forget the forgiveness theme, because that was very strong and definitely needed for certain people cough, cough.
There were some places and conversations that felt a little stilted to me, when it came to the faith elements. But if you're a Christian, you really shouldn't be too bothered by that.
"Healing takes time, Iya. You've been through more than most, and sometimes the memories are almost worse than the experience itself, because they never end." (Page 182)
"Lies are often easier to accept than truth, but the truth will set you free." (Page 214)
"It was never about you, Iya... but always about letting Me move through you! Surrender, child, surrender, and let Me guide the way." (Page 222)
"Maybe the cheery song of the Mannada was a reminder of the hope found in Elohim, or the joy just over the rise if only we were brave enough to take up our burden and follow Him. To forget everything but our love for Him and His for us." (Page 253)
The fantastical elements of the Emberlings, with their gift of fire creation, was so fun and special. But there is strong truth woven in, and the harder themes dealt with. So it was both fantastical and honest. My only complaint is that I felt like things could've been taken a little slower, dealt with in more detail, but then the story would've been really long, so...
Overall, I enjoyed this uniquely different Christian fantasy, and recommend it anyone who enjoys that genre. The gift of the Emberlings (and the Wavelings briefly mentioned) are similar to the gifts that are in The Ravenwood Saga, which was part of the reason I liked them. Now, this book is very different from The Ravenwood Saga, but the gifts of power from Elohim are similar, so it reminded me of that series.
Well, that's the end of this long review!

Kaytlin Phillips has brought us something exceptional with Emberling. Action-packed, humorous, gripping, and full of strong truths about seeing with the lens of God's love rather than blinding hate, this novel is sure to have readers at the edge of their seats, rooting for the ill-fated romance between the king's ranger and a condemned Emberling.
Okay can we all just pause and stare at that cover *cues oohs and aahs*. I believe it was Jaiden who did the cover art and I just have to say it’s a gift from God, it’s beautiful 😍. Ok anywho let’s get to the review:
Overview: In the world of Uriu, Emberlings and Embresses live with fire in their bones, a gift from Elohim to protect the humans. After three Emberlings abused their power to hurt a village of humans, the humans turned against the Emberling race focused on only one thing: annihilation of the Emberling race. Can one unlikely companionship between a hurt Emberling and a bitter human change the world of Uriu forever?
Characters:
- Ben - Gosh I loved him, I think he was my favorite character! I laughed with him enjoyed his horrible no plan plans and watched him comfort the people around him
- Iya - she was such a cool character. She was very quiet and distrusting and did tend to take things personally but it was nice to see her grow and reach out to Elohim in times of need
- Malcolm - yes y’all I agree he needed a few smacks 😂. But I liked him, I liked the protective arc and how realistic he was in his character when he kept pushing past his limits untik those around him had to remind him that he didn’t earn forgiveness. And who doesn’t like a good enemies to lovers 😁
The other characters were more side so I’ll leave it to that. :)
Christian content:
Lots 😌! Mentions of Gods grace and forgiveness. Comments of praying to Elohim. Questioning and searching for God’s will in tough circumstances. Encouraging friends and family to trust in God. Lessons of surrendering to God.
Dislikes: Omg I have like none this is literally the best arc I’ve ever read. These are super minor but they’re not really dislikes more just comments 🤷♀️
- I do wish the romance was slower only cause I’m a slow burn 🔥 girlie but it was really pure and the kissing was off page as well wish I really appreciated - I did feel like the writing sometimes pulled me out only when it didn’t flow as smoothly but it might just be the writing style that others might enjoy more!
And that’s it!! It was amazing 🤩 go read 📚 byeeee 💕 * I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.*
I loved this story!! I got it awhile ago. Okay, maybe it wasn’t too long ago but I know I started it but put it off for a bit. Then at four percent last night I started reading it again and got sucked in and finished it last night!!!!! Oh my goodness!!! 🥹 I loved this story! I got so mad but I know a conflict is really good if I’m mad at people lol. I might have skimmed slightly…but only slightly because it was so exciting and I had to finish it. I didn’t want to go to bed without completing the book.
And wow!!! Five stars……twenty stars!!! 100000 stars!!! 😂 Totallt recommend this book to…anyone who likes fantasy romance! I don’t really read anything with magic but this was so natural and real and just, wonderful! I’ve lived reading these sisters’ books and reading Kaitlyn’s…I wasn’t disappointed! I cannot wait for the next book!!! Waveling is it?! I want to know who it’s about!!!! 😭 😂
*I received an ARC copy and these are all my thoughts (I mean come on, who can ramble like me? 🙄 😆)*
Hook: The Emberlings are tasked by Elohim to keep the forest creatures away from the people, but they are being hunted down.
Overview:
Language/Profanity: None.
Faith: Very strong! I loved it!
Romance/Sex: Falling in love but only kisses on foreheads except for one.
Action/Adventure: Full of it! Danger, battles, arrows, and fire!
Other: There is mention of death and injuries.
Synopsis: One never realizes how large their world is until they struggle to protect it.
However, his mission takes an unexpected turn when he saves Iyana, a secretive girl haunted by a heartreanding past.
Iya must keep her identity hidden from Malcolm and the other Rangers because if they discover who she is... death awaits her. But if the truth is never told how can they find the strength to forgive and unite? Decisions need to be made, and the wrong ones could lead to the destruction of all of Uriu.
(I didn't write this.)
First of all. An amazing story is one that draws the reader in emotionally; even if you want to tell the characters to smarten up, it is good writing that draws the reader in, and this book did that. I was cranky at the characters sometimes, but I also was tense when they were in danger and happy when they were. It was an amazing book in that sense. And the storyline was so cool and well written; I loved the way (even though it wasn't written this way on purpose) that I could see Saul/Paul's life in the story. And the other characters! So good!
I don't think I saw any inconsistencies, and it did not drag. The style was pretty much normal; we saw the story from the two main characters POVS.
Favourites: My favourite part... when Mal came to his senses. I had some quotes that I liked, but I fiddled with the Kindle accounts and lost them, so... there were several quotes that I liked though. Ben was by far my favourite character. I loved the way he defended the Emberlings. How he was the cool to Mal's hot... and before I wax too poetic... I liked how he was lighthearted but also knew when to be serious and listen. Five stars, a perfect read for young adults who love a good actiony fantasy book!
Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
An excellent first book in The Chronicles of Uriu!
Malcolm and Iya were both sympathetic, well-developed characters. Malcolm especially experienced a lot of growth throughout the story, and I loved Iya's strong faith and courage. This book was packed with action, high stakes, faith, and a bit of sweet romance. I need the second book in the series soon!
Overall, Emberling was an exciting read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and non-magical fantasy.
Violence: Lots of fight scenes, mentions of death and murder, barely described. Mentions of burns and wounds but nothing overly graphic.
Magic. N/A. The Emberlings have the ability to create creatures out of fire but they are all born with this ability and it is described as a gift from Elohim (God) to protect the Meadows of Harvanth from the monsters of Englewood.
This is book is soooo good! (And no, I'm not biased cuz my sister wrote it or anything😉💖) The characters are so great and relatable, I just *hugs them* Malcolm is just sooo...like I know I should hate him, but I just feel so bad for him and want to help the poor guy!! He's been through so much, even tho that does not make his actions any better, it just makes me feel so bad for him💔 Poor lost, guy! Iya is sooo sweet too! And brave!💖 I could not have the kind of faith and strength she has, she is just so trusting despite all she's been through she never loses hope!💖🥰 and Ben is my fav even tho he's just a side character🤭💖 he's just so fun and kind!!! He cracks me up and is such a loyal and great friend to Mal💖 and so wise too, I loves him!💖🥰
The story and themes of this book are just so good, and hit so hard toward the end there, like wow! The characters archs and the turn around of the plot and the intense last battle, wow, wow, WOW! Talking about being on the edge of your seat!! Goosebumps!💖💖💖 Seriously recommend this book for anyone looking for a clean, non-magical, Christian fantasy with lots of action, a unique world, and a little bit of sweet romance! And a funny, sarcastic, sidekick (aka, Ben😉💖)
I absolutely fell in love with this book! The world was well crafted so that I easily and quickly understood the world and it’s peoples. I loved the concept that the fire of the Emberlings wasn’t magical, it was a gift given them by their Maker. To be used to better the land. The characters that were easy to connect with and had such beautiful character ARCs. Malcolm and Iya were so well written. Malcolm’s arc was the most moving. Seeing his transformation through the book was wonderful. I love how original Iya’s character was. She wasn’t just another female hero type. She was noble, loving, and brave. Uncompromising in her faith and she had real purpose. It wasn’t some selfish quest. She was given a task by her Creator and she fulfilled to the best of her abilities no matter the cost. Ben was just the loyal to a fault witty sidekick that Malcolm needed. And Duncan… he made me cry (for… reasons). It wasn’t just another fantasy story in that it had depth and meaning. The plot made sense and flowed very well. For themes, it showed the devastation that hate and vengeance wreak on those who are consumed by them. That vengeance belongs to the Creator and Him alone and whenever mere mortal try to take things into their own hands we create a painful mess. It also shows that love overcomes the hate, even the hardest of hearts can be transformed (even if it requires being broken first), and that forgiveness heals the open wounds of the past. *I received an ARC copy from the author. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
"And we all need reminders because Elohim moves in ways we cannot see. Sometimes He has plans we cannot see, nor fathom, and sometimes that involves pain even for those most worthy of joy."
"Elohim made you for a reason. The fire in your veins, our veins, is a gift from the greatest Gift-giver of all. Do not fear it or what others think of it."
~My Thoughts~ You know those moments where you read something so amazing that once you've finished it, you just have to sit there for a moment to process it all and mourn the fact that it's over and you can't go to that fictional world? Yeah, I had one of those moments after finishing this book. Why in the world did I take so long to actually read this?!?! (No, it wasn't because I didn't like this book or that I couldn't really get into it. It's because of something called, ✨️life.✨️) But Emberling is so, soooo, good!! Y'all seriously need to go get this book as soon as y'all possibly can, and NOT be a fool like me and take however long I took but read it sooo much sooner, and once y'all read this amazingness, y'all can thank me for demanding y'all read Emberling, and I'll just be like, "I told y'all so!" And then we can talk about this book and how amazing it is, mmkay?!
~Characters~ Iya: I loved her from the very beginning and never stopped! Honestly, I did find her more relatable than I did with Malcolm, but that's just me. But the courage she has is remarkable, and she's just such an amazing character!! And I wish she was real so I could give her a big hug and then we could be friends!
Malcolm: Okay, okay, I did love Malcolm too! But there were times that I really wished I could whack him in the head..... but how he progressed as a character and how he ended this book pretty much made up for it!
~Content Warnings~ (Warning! 🚨 Before you go any further, there is a chance that something I've said about the content could possibly be a bit spoilerish, so please proceed with caution!)
Violence: Mentions of killing/death, wounds, blood, characters getting shot with arrows and cut and stabbed by swords
Sexual Content/Romance: A few kisses (both on the forehead and mouth), thinking of kisses. And of course, characters falling in love.
Bad language: There wasn't any bad language, but some of the Emberlings did get called not so nice names such as "demon," and "monster."
~Other Notes~ If I absolutely had to give an age minimum that I'd recommend Emberling to, I'd probably say 13+, but honestly I probably would have read this as a 12 year old or even possibly an 11 year old, but that's just me, sooo......
~Will I Read the Rest of the Series/More from this Author?~ Um, yeah! Absolutely!!
*I received a free copy of this book from the author for my honest review. A positive review was not required. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved this one! ❤️🔥 Such a well written, heart-felt story, tackling (without preaching too hard 😉) tough, universal topics such as prejudice and forgiveness--even forgiveness of self. And the romance was so cute, I devoured that. 😌🥰 I loved Ben, Malcolm and Iya! Ben was so sweet the whole time, and Malcolm had such a good heart, even when he was confused and in the wrong. 👀🤭And Iya was so sweet too! ☺️ This one will definitely be reread, and I can't wait for the rest!!! 🤗
CWs: Battle induced injuries and descriptions of blood and wounds, but not gory. Respectful, minimal kissing between one couple.
(Thanks so much to the author for the ARC! 🥰 All opinions are my own. 😉)
Emberling is a story about prejudice and about not making assumptions about a whole people based on the actions of a few. It has Christian themes. The "magic" in the story is a gift of Elohim to aid the people in defending themselves from the dangerous forest creatures.
It was fast-paced and hard to put down. There was plenty of action, elements of sweet romance, and deep friendships. I enjoyed it greatly and look forward to reading more by the author. My twelve year old daughter has added this to her "absolute favorites" list and my older teens enjoyed it as well.
Love, love, love this book! The world of Uriu is enchanting and the characters are so well written. There are times when you’re ruefully chucking at the characters and what they know and don’t know. The trials they overcome, the path ahead, and the Truth shared in every page. Waveling can’t come soon enough!
This book took me a while to get into, but I honestly blame that on the fact that I was reading on my phone… In all honesty though I really enjoyed this book!! I don’t read much of the forbidden romance trope because it is hardly ever portrayed well, but this book incorporated it quite well! It was great watching the characters develop. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book ☺️
(Apologies to the author that it took me this long to put the high quality review up 😅) See you in the next book 🫶🏻 Mary McMinn

Well that was amazing.
I was intrigued by this story from the beginning with its premise of a girl with fiery blood forced to work alongside a ranger sworn to wipe out her race. And it did not disappoint. From page one, I was completely invested in Iya and Malcolm's story. It was such a great read!
Characters: I loved Iya! She's so sweet and gentle, with so much trauma in her young life. Her choice to cling to faith despite it all is inspiring. It was quite enjoyable to go on a journey with her.
Malcolm is a really good character. I liked him even better than Iya. While I sometimes wanted to smack him for his prejudices, I still understood why he felt as he did, so I couldn't be too mad at him. His arc is great!
Content: There's some violence, but nothing's gratuitous. People are injured and die in painful ways. A character is nearly burned to death. There's intense hatred between humans and Emberlings, which can be difficult to read about.
There's a sweet romance throughout. It's quite clean, with just a couple of kisses. I was definitely rooting for it all the way through.
Writing: The writing was amazing. I was sucked into the plot from that incredible first line, and I didn't want to stop until the end. There are some complex elements going on at the same time, but it all comes together so well.
Summary: This is one of my favorite books of the year. I expected to like it, but I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. I can't wait for book two! I'd recommend this book to readers aged 14+.
Emberling is one of my top reads of this year; it’s a fast-paced, entertaining, and exciting story! The plot is action-packed and full of battles, journeys, and twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. The worldbuilding and fantastical creatures are so descriptive and creative. The romance is slow and super sweet! I love the whole group of characters, but Iya and Malcolm are especially amazing and both have solid character arcs! Ben is also a great side character and his friendship with Malcolm is the best. And Duncan? I absolutely adore him, he’s so caring! Emberling displays the themes of forgiveness and love and that has to be one of my favorite parts of the book. Overall, it’s a marvelous read and I can’t wait to see what happens next in book 2!
🫐Sara's review🫐 4.5✨ ❤️🔥✨🐴⚔️🐉 I loved this one! ❤️🔥 Such a well written, heart-felt story, tackling--without preaching too hard 😉--tough, universal topics such as prejudice and forgiveness--even forgiveness of self. 🤗 CWs: Battle induced injuries and descriptions of blood and wounds, but not gory. Respectful, minimal kissing between one couple. (And thanks so much to the author for the ARC! 🥰 All opinions here are my own. 😉)
Initial Review: RTC(and hopefully I'll start working on my list of RTC's tomorrow!😅)
Full Review: Content Rating: 5/5There was some fighting, bloodshed, and fires/burns, but I didn't think any of it was gore-y at any level. It all stayed really clean, though. Theme Rating: 5/5 Age Rating: 13/14+There's some romance, prejudice, and fighting, but everything stays really clean.
I really enjoyed this book! I felt like it was missing an ongoing goal throughout the whole story, which made it hard to really charge forward reading, but that was the main issue I found. Everything else was really amazing and really solid, actually. The world was super well developed and really cool to see, the characters were amazing and I loved the depth they had to them. Ben was hilarious and he was such a good friend to Mal, and so loyal. The faith aspect was so beautiful, and I loved that they called God Elohim; it was so fitting for the story and I also just love that name for God. Overall, this story was so beautiful and fun and I can certainly recommend it for all fantasy loving teens and up!
*Thank you to the author for a free ARC. I was not required to write a positive review.
9/10 This book came along at the right time to cure my beginning-of-the-year-reading-slump. I needed something with quick pacing when my first book selection kept moving too slow. Well, Emberling has perfectly short chapters switching between perspectives of 2 characters that can’t possibly become friends, right? There’s a lot of action that propels those pages to keep turning within the beautifully crafted world of Uriu. Not to mention the romantic tension of said characters that couldn’t possibly become friends.
Both Iya & Malcolm had believable baggage in their lives & I loved their character arcs. Ben, Duncan, & the extended families were all delightful characters & brought a fun contrast to our MCs.
I love the Emberling concept, lore, as well as the other unique people of Uriu (Wavelings, dwarves, giants, wildlife, etc). Their abilities as well as their weaknesses are unique, & something I haven’t seen done before. If this book had a long prologue describing the history of each race, we’d have a world approaching that Tolkien level of depth.
And if you’re opposed to magical fantasy, you won’t find it here, despite the fiery cover. If you’re one who really likes magic, then I think Emberling will provide you enough fantasy physics to make do.
I really enjoyed this book, & as I said earlier, it probably saved my reading goals for 2025. Haha I look forward to Waveling & any additional stories!
I've been waiting for Emberling for almost a whole year now, so to finally have gotten the chance to read it has been amazing! Note: I received an ARC of this book, and all opinions expressed are my own!
Story: 5/5
Worldview: 5/5
Story: I am not sure if I've said it before, but Kaytlin Phillips (and her sisters) are comfort authors to me. I love that when I pick up one of their books I know it's going to be full of heart, adventure, and encouragement. Emberling was absolutely wonderful to read! I loved how the world was laid out from the first few chapters in a way that didn't drag the plot--lots of action happening here--and Iya and Malcolm were great characters. They had such clear goals and motives, and I loved rooting for them to grow as people. So many threads laid down at the beginning came together at the end, which was awesome. I know this is the beginning of a series, but Emberling really feels like a standalone (with some solid threads of intrigue for future books). Ben was a great side character that I hope we see more of moving forward!
Worldview: The worldview was phenomenal. I really loved the clear faith elements woven throughout Malcolm's and Iya's arcs, as well as other supporting characters. Malcolm's people hate the Emberlings and have a very holier-than-thou attitude, like wiping the Emberlings off the face of the earth is the way they serve Elohim (God). I liked seeing the contrast of looking at this perspective from the outside and from within. It added some understanding to what could otherwise be a very black-and-white discussion of "you're wrong and I'm right" but never knowing why. Some of my favorite quotes:
"Elohim has a plan and whatever it is, [...] you can be assured that His plan is best. He has weighed all the costs, all the outcome, and He will decide what He deems is best, even if His best does not feel like it at the time."
"There were still many things I didn't understand, but I was beginning to see that Elohim was a God of mercy. He forgave, He loved, and, most importantly, He accepted even the worst parts of me and made them new."
Overall Thoughts: I was excited to read this book and it definitely delivered! Emberling hit so many high points of character arcs, action, faith, and love, and it was a joy to read. :) I can't wait to see what comes next in this series!
How is it that I keep reading novels by so called 'young folk'? No! Kaytlin can't be a teen or early 20's either, she has to be 80, like me! How does she manage to look so young? Otherwise, how can she write such a beautiful novel, and be so young? Sigh!
I could really relate to one of the themes of: thinking I have to fix everything on my own, and not give it to my Lord and Savior.
Also, super well done in this novel, was how people, can convict and deceive themselves about the supposed sins of others, without realizing, they are committing those very sins themselves.
There were many such Godly, Biblical themes, and yes, I cried here and there.
However, I wanted to see what the king finally had to say ( did he thank them?) and also, for Ben to begin his courting of Mal's sister.
Well, then IF she is indeed as young as claimed then, there is no reason to dawdle and not have the next book in the series.... yesterday!
My heart still hasn’t gotten over Emberling, and it’s a good thing there’s another book coming in the series so I still get to read more about this world and these darling characters!!! It’s everything I love in a fantasy—a richly built fantasy setting with unique cultures and fantastical elements and creatures, with lovable, tortured characters and a plotline of tension-filled romance that stomps on your heart then slowly pieces it back together. Not to mention the spiritual aspect of the characters’ journeys, bringing God to the forefront in a natural, powerful way that doesn’t become dry or “preachy.”
Mal is…my baby. 😭 He has such a heartbreaking past, which fuels his misguided hatred toward the Emberlings. He’s a strong hero, but a toughened and blinded one, crossing into morally gray (or *some* would say straight up VILLAINOUS) territory. I completely understood his fears and motivations even as I wanted to shake him hard to see reason. I loved seeing him with his family (his sister is so sweet and his mother has a heart of gold!) and watching his interactions with his best friend, Ben—who is an EPIC sidekick. The kind every story needs. Witty, caring, blunt, willing to call his friends out when they need a kick in the pants. (And Duncan is another great side character!! I love the guy!)
The slow-burn, burgeoning romance between him and Iya had me shipping them SO HARDDDD. He’s protective, gentle, and caring, and she’s so vulnerable and innocent, caring the weight of a tragedy too heavy for her shoulders. Iya’s struggles pulled on my heartstrings right from the start—Englewood and her family and the Emberlings’ culture was painted in such vibrant colors I felt the loss of it right along with her. As the story progresses, we see her agonizing internal conflict and how torn she is over decisions she made in the past, and it only raises the stakes when *the meeting* between Iya and Mal occurs (CUE THE DRAMAAA) and he sees her as a human, not an Emberling. And thus a tentative relationship starts, built on lies even as much of it is true and good.
I don’t wanna spoil it, but let’s just say, you know it’s building up to THE MOMENT of rEaLiZaTiOn. *shivers* Kaytlin Phillips does not disappoint. Get ready for your heart to be broken. Mine certainly was. *zips mouth before spoilers come out*
The plot is brilliant, guys. Just brilliant. *sobs*
Plenty of high-stakes action and plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat—there’s battles and narrow escapes galore to suit the readers who crave fast-paced adventure, though it’s nicely balanced out with the slow, deep parts. And like I mentioned, the spiritual truths in the story are powerful and play a pivotal role in both characters’ arcs. Both Iya and Malcolm have beautiful transformations that feel so rewarding after all the pain they go through.
I recommend this for everyone who loves Christian fantasy with fantastical elements, a unique, vivid world you’ll feel like you visited once upon a dream, wholesome romance with intense emotions, high-stakes adventure, deep themes, and characters who unapologetically steal your heart.

I had absolutely zero idea what I was getting into when I started this book, other than I love the Three Sister's Dragon Prince Chronicles and the blurb and snippets were highly tantalizing. Boy, what a glorious ride! From the start I felt like I was part of the forest, and the meadows in Uriu. It's a fast-paced read, with lots of heart-stopping moments yet the tenderness is there. I wept, laughed, stressed, and breathed sighs of relief. Malcolm was hard to like, honestly. He was decidedly a man with more sides to him than meets the eye, while Ben flat-out had my heart from the first time he talked about his horses. :D And Iya-she's so sweet!! I love her very much, and appreciate her softness. It's lovely to have such clean, strengthening books out there and I look foreword to more of Kaytlin Phillips work in future!
Death awaited me on the morrow. I'd die as a traitor for doing the right thing.
Ah, this was such a fun read!
The worldbuilding was fascinating and beautiful. The Emberlings and Wavelings were fascinating concepts, and I love the imagery of a character with fire in their blood. Iya was so sweet and I loved the banter between Mal and Ben.
There were a few times where I wanted to absolutely smack some characters...but the arcs of forgiveness and trust were SO good!
CW: The humans hate the Emberlings and are hunting them down and killing them/destroying their villages. Wounds, blood, fighting. Someone is almost burned at the stake. Light romance with a few forehead kisses and one kiss.
