For every family that struggles with maintaining order at home due to ADHD, Help! My room exploded is a practical guide that provides the reader with many valuable insights. The author provides step by step strategies tailored specifically for kids with ADHD, but I found it helpful for the whole family, not only for family members with ADHD.
But it is more than a book on decluttering. It is a personal story that many families can relate to and the author lets us in on both struggles and successes. The book is providing many tips on how to build a strong relationship with your kids and work together for a better home environment.
The book is well grounded in recent science as well as what works “in the real world” for a family that struggles with ADHD symptoms.
You also get access to a workbook that will help you start, stay on track and succeed. If they could accomplish it, so can you and I!
We are a family with a lively 10 year old who has ADHD, and my partner has ADD too...so yes, I relate. This book mixes kindness with real advice. Annie Eklov gives simple steps that make the big job of decluttering feel doable instead of scary. Early on she explains how clutter can make ADHD symptoms worse for kids. I had never thought of that before, but it makes so much sense after watching how my son reacts to a messy space. One thing I tried right away was her “toy category bins” idea. We sorted Legos, action figures, and art supplies into separate boxes with labels. My son helped pick the labels and for the first week he could actually find what he wanted without asking me. Our mornings are calmer now because we aren’t hunting for lost pieces. Some parts of the book go deep into cleaning every room, which felt a bit long to me. I did enjoy the chapter on how colors affect mood and focus, that was really interesting. Overall, it’s a warm, practical guide definitely worth reading.
The personal story of how clutter directly impacts ADHD symptoms makes the connection tangible rather than theoretical. The step-by-step decluttering strategies are specific enough to implement immediately, and the focus on reducing visual overwhelm addresses a real challenge for ADHD brains. The empathetic tone acknowledges how hard it is to maintain organization when executive function is already stretched thin.
Some sections feel repetitive when emphasizing the clutter-ADHD connection, and the book could benefit from more varied examples beyond the family's experience. However, the practical roadmap and understanding of how environment affects focus make this genuinely helpful. A solid resource for families struggling with both ADHD management and chronic clutter who need concrete steps rather than just motivation.
Interesting that this book frames decluttering not just as tidying up, but as a structured solution to ADHD-related challenges. By connecting symptoms to the environment, it highlights how clutter can amplify stress and distraction, and how organization can restore focus and peace. The narrative of Annie and her son Lage discovering this link, grounds the advice in lived experience, making the strategies relatable. Each step is presented as part of a system. The result is a clear plan that families can follow to reduce mealtime battles, improve relationships, and create calmer surroundings. It’s less about perfection and more about progress, offering a framework that transforms daily life into something more manageable and serene.
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by a cluttered house this book is a must-read. This book offers valuable insights and practical advice that can benefit anyone striving for a more organized living space.
The author expertly combines personal advice with engaging stories from their own life, making the book both relatable and informative. Through their experiences, you'll learn how to tackle clutter in a way that reduces stress and enhances daily living. Whether you're a parent of a child with ADHD or simply someone seeking a tidier environment, you'll find the content incredibly beneficial.
I love the focus on relationships in this book. It really grounds you and puts into perspective what matters. I like the way all claims in the book are very carefully and clearly referenced. There is some very interesting discussion on colour that I had not heard of before. There’s definitely some practical action that can be taken around the home to assist with calm, decluttering and better organisation as a result of this information. I enjoyed this book, gathered many practical and helpful ideas to implement at home and I thoroughly recommend it for those faced with household management challenges.
This book completely changed the way I look at clutter and focus. I didn’t expect a story about a messy room to feel so healing, but it did. The way the author shares her journey with her son feels intimate, hopeful, and deeply relatable. It’s not about perfection, it’s about creating peace where there used to be chaos. The insights into how ADHD and clutter connect were eye-opening, and the practical tips are realistic for any busy family. I closed this book feeling lighter, motivated, and understood. It’s more than a guide, it’s a gentle reminder that small changes truly can change everything.
I think this book is an incredible read. I have ADHD and so do my four teens. As a single mom, you feel like you're losing battles left and right, but when you have ADHD, you're trying to help your kids through the quagmire of thinking outside the box where convention would box you in as to how to handle parenting, school, household chores, etc., it just causes you to feel like a complete failure. I appreciated this book and the way it gave me permission to address everything in a completely different way. One that can benefit my kids and help us minimize ADHD symptoms. I am happy to follow this author's blog to learn more about approaching all of this in a healthy and positive way.
If you’ve ever looked around your house and thought, “Where do I even start?” Help! My Room Exploded might be precisely what you need. Annie Eklöv doesn’t just dish out organizing hacks—she gets what it’s like to live with an ADHD brain. Her advice is practical, yes, but it’s the honest, heartfelt stories—especially about raising kids with ADHD—that stuck with me. You can tell she’s been through it; authenticity makes all the difference. If your home feels like constant chaos and you or your kids struggle to stay organized, this book is fresh air. I can’t recommend it enough.
This book contained a lot of really helpful information about various topics related to clutter and ADHD. I was excited to see that the book provides a lot of information to help us understand the why's behind why we can let clutter and mess get out of control and provides some wonderful ideas on how to manage this. The book provides multiple systematic approaches to be used for dealing with messes and clutter, as well as ensuring that we build connection with our kiddos simultaneously. Good read!
This book surprised me in the best way. It is practical, warm, and very honest. I really liked how the author shares her journey with her son and how they discovered the link between clutter and ADHD symptoms. The explanations feel real and lived in, not preachy or overwhelming. The steps she gives are simple and doable, and the tone makes you feel supported rather than judged. It left me feeling encouraged and hopeful, and I think any family dealing with ADHD would find something genuinely helpful in these pages.
This book is designed for parents whose kids have messy rooms, especially those with ADHD. The author seems knowledgeable in this field, suggesting that fostering a loving relationship is the most effective approach when dealing with a child who has ADHD. Very well written and presented, I would recommend this book for parents facing these types of problems.
I loved this book. Not just another declutterring book. It took a really wholistic approach to the process with room for individuality. Not just one rule fits all. The author shares personal stories and observations about her own experience and learning curve. Would recommend to anyone who wants to find more peace at home and spend less time cleaning it.
Lots and lots of great information here and actionable tips. Many of the tips actually surprised me in how simple they are to implement yet with huge impact. However, I found the inconsistent formatting, different spacing, incorrect citations and missing links to be distracting. Also, the book would be easier to read if it was better organized and if it's was easier to navigate between different chapters.
A book that helped my teenage daughter immensely. I especially liked the section that explains the tone lights add to a room. The book is brilliant, easy to follow, and makes a great deal of sense. The moment you read a chapter, you get the AH-HA moment that runs through your mind, thinking. That's clever. I highly recommend reading this book to any parent who has a child or children who suffer from ADHD. A great read overall.
