"Touch me like a lover," I whispered. "Anywhere. Everywhere."

This novella deserves 5 stars for the cover alone, but trust me when I say the writing is no exception.
I've read it in a single breath, and not just because it's short and easy to follow, but mainly because every single line exudes the kind of gripping pathos you can't turn away from.
The story is as simple as they get and yet, it's filled with emotions from start to finish. Despite the shortness of the novel, Elle's character is exquisitely developed and so is her backstory. Her relationship with her sister, in particular the love the two feel for each other, made my chest feel all tight and heavy (no spoilers but holy shit, my poor heart!).
On one of my reading updates I joked about the character of Death being sexy and, while that's unexpectedly true, I liked his depth, the pain behind his eyes and his profound connection to Elle more than I appreciated the mildly spicy moments he was involved in.
I really loved it and, after reading the epilogue, I can't wait to see how it links to the other books in the series.
I can easily tell it's a book every fan of the genre could appreciate, maybe just don't go into it looking for a story that focuses a lot on romance. There is some, but it's not the main point of Elle and Eth's journey. It's journey worth reading about, though, so I definitely recommend it.

The way this book put a hold on me! This is writing at its very finest! I have found another favorite “auto-buy” author!!

I loved every character, but I have great admiration for Elle. She is a strong FMC that will go to any length necessary for her sister. And I loved the way the MMC, Eth, kept growing and changing and seemed to be “feeling” emotions that at one point seemed impossible for him.

This is a beautiful, exciting beginning to the Embers of Nia series! I can’t wait to read more and have sooo many questions answered!

Super quick read (novella, less than 200 pages) but I packs a punch! Has fantasy and romance elements and I can see how the author is going to build a whole world and series from here! Big “Death and the Maiden” vibes.

Elle and her sister Gingel are down on their luck and barely surviving when Gingel gets hurt. Not knowing what else to do, she sets out on a desperate trip to save her. But someone only Elle can see is following them and a mysterious thread connects them.

CW: not super graphic death (but they deserved it), attempted SA, talk of amputation, morphine like drug use

Thank you to the author for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Perhaps in another time, in a parallel universe where I don't mind dubious half-demons who have lived multiple millennia fornicating with twenty-year-old martyrs, I would've enjoyed this story. In this life, however, I certainly do not. This girl is so unbelievably daft. I have successfully realized why fantasy books are always so lengthy. Because usually the main character offers herself up for sacrifice in exchange for a certain individual's life. In this case, I saw NOTHING to make me believe the sister was worthy of living, worthier so than the FMC. So she had a lover, and they were sweethearts and whatnot, and she deserved to live more than the FMC, even though she hadn't done a single worthwhile thing in her wasteful life? I'm livid. She literally reincarnated Eth (that's actually the most ludicrous name I've ever heard of, by the way. I don't care that it was a “nickname” serving as a euphemism for Death. Eth is idiotic.) and slowly watched him thaw from his demon form, because he loved her, and her first thought was “yes, I shall ruin him and myself just to save my worthless sister.” By all means, dearest, go right ahead, and watch me loathe you. This story felt like the author thought of it while making hot dogs one evening, and as she doled them out to her family, she also conjured up some spicy scenes with a literal phantom (weird kink but who am I to judge?). It's a shame because the writing is BEAUTIFUL, which is why I rated it the two stars you glimpse above. Still, I wasted an entire day reading this. I love trashy stories, but this was trashier than trashy. I'm so sorry. I wanted to love this, I really did, but the whole story made no sense. Also, maybe I have a ruined copy but why is chapter nineteen set after Elle's death? And Elle is still alive in it? Make that make sense. The epilogue at least insinuated she existed in the void with Eth at the end. I'm not only chronically bored, but also mind-bogglingly perplexed. And I don't even want to know the answers to the 1001 queries I have. That's how you know it was a bad book (in my humble opinion) 😭

I received this as an ARC and am very glad I did, as I can’t wait to see how the story of Arit and Gingel continues. (Also, the PR package the author sent was the best I’ve ever received)

This story is one of suspense and fantasy, accompanied by romance, and I enjoyed how the author brought the title to life.

I rate it a 4.5⭐️ but it gets a 5 on the round up. It’s short, but perfectly lines up the next story in the “Embers of Nia” series.

What If You Met Death and Fell in Love with It?

I borrowed this book through the Kindle Unlimited subscription I share with my girlfriend and read it on my tablet using the Kindle app.

The story follows Elle, our main protagonist, as she embarks on a desperate journey for her sister, Gingel. When Gingel is gravely injured at the beginning of the book, Elle is willing to do anything to save her—even if it means facing Death itself. She soon meets Death, whom she nicknames Eth, and instead of fear, an unexpected connection forms between them. The real dilemma begins when Elle and Eth start falling for each other.

This is a fantasy novel with strong paranormal elements. At approximately 160 pages, it's a quick and engaging read, with a writing style that is concise yet immersive. One of the standout aspects of this book is its world-building—the maps at the beginning beautifully reflect the author's meticulous attention to detail.

Overall, the book is wonderfully written, and if you enjoy romantic fantasy with a touch of the supernatural, you’ll likely love this one.

Big thanks to Aspen Kilgore for sending me an eARC! The Crimson Thread is out now and is available on KU!

3.7 stars!

I went into this not really knowing what to expect other than the lovely cover that's giving 'falling for the reaper' vibes! I was pretty hooked from the first page, the writing is clear and concise and flows easily. The world-building comes naturally and felt fleshed out just enough without taking up too much page time and kept things immersive. I would consider this more of a prequel novella that's setting up something bigger but it was nice to see where the story started! It felt a bit like a dark fairytale or a quest in a game.

It was heartwarming (and a bit heartbreaking) to see how much Elle cared for her sister, this little family of 3 were just genuinely good people who had terrible things happen to them but persevered the best they could and never let that get in the way of their love for each other. The characters did feel a bit flat/one-dimensional and the plot a bit convenient at times but I think it's only up from here and this series is full of potential! I hope we get to see more of what became of certain characters!

This quick easy read was honestly just what I needed at the moment, I think it would have also been perfect for a rainy autumn day!

DNF @20%. This book is moving way too slow for me. I'm still going to try book 2 in this series since its a different set of characters and seems like it'll be a bit more fast paced.

The writing here is lyrical and poetic. The style is solemn and romantic in a way that respects the story themes beautifully.

This is a novella so it’s short but nothing seemed rushed. I think the author did a good job at keeping to the story to be able to fit a well rounded story without being over convoluted or lacking substance.

The main characters Elle and Eth had me at the edge of my seat. I just need more. I need more of all of the characters I need more stories in this world. I need more lore and history!

I know you are only just getting started in this world. You said we will have more stories in this world and we will see these characters again at some point. And I will be patiently not patiently waiting for it.

This was such a quick and fascinating little read!

First, let's start with that gorgeous cover! The cover is what caught my eye and definitely pulled me in to start.

This book is full of weathering burdens, sacrifice, and sisterly love, that kept me turning the pages to see the outcome. While I didn't feel we got to know anyone but the main character much, I did sympathize with nearly every person in this book (not Archon and Vindre, to hell with them!).

Of course I loved the "Death and the Maiden" trope, as well as the lovely little bit of spice that we got (nothing crazy, upper YA for sure).

My favorite thing by far about the book was the overall feel of it! The language used and the pace set very much evoked a myth/lore adventure story, which I 100% loved!

I seriously can't wait to read the upcoming trilogy by Kilgore, as well as all the other stories she has planned in this world!

3.5⭐️

This was a good, quick novella to start off a new fantasy series that follows an older sister’s desperate quest to save her sister from the hands of Death. You can feel the emotion & sacrifice as Elle works towards her purpose to keep Gingel alive. Along the way, she finds herself drawn and connected to Eth in more ways than one.

I enjoyed the descriptive writing and the way “Death” evolves throughout the journey!

Thank you, Aspen Kilgore, for an eARC and the gorgeous PR goodies!

I can’t wait to see how the series unfolds!

"Come here, sweet girl." 😩

I don’t typically read YA as much anymore! However, this was a nice change of pace for me! Especially it being a higher up YA (pretty sure)

The descriptive language that’s used!!! Ahh! “The chill in the air seeped into my skin..” it pulled me in and kept a hold.

There’s so many elements that were in the book that I’m absolutely loving!

“Conflicting desires tugged at me…”

With the respect of nature being one of my top!! There’s so much that goes into the book!

"So you are Death."

That ending.. 😮

Before we talk about this book can we just take a minute to gawk at that stunning cover? Seriously, it's so pretty, I hope it becomes available in paperback at some point because leaving that gorgeous cover to hide on my Kindle feels wrong. I need it on my bookshelf where I can gawk at it when I'm in need of something lovely to look at.

If I'm not mistaken, The Crimson Thread is Aspen Kilgore's debut and WOW what a home run! The writing was beautiful, descriptive and lush. I can't say enough about the setting. It gave "traipsing through middle earth" vibes and I loved every second of that. I did not guess at the ending at all (because I was probably too distracted by the immaculate vibes-please note that there is a mild cliffhanger at the end) and now I am sitting here wishing I had the next books in my hands because I am desperate to know more about this world Aspen has constructed. What happened to the gods? Did Arit and Gingel find the peace they deserved? What is the grand scheme behind Elle's connection to Eth? Will we get to learn more about Eth's background in future books? I'm chomping at the bit and if I keep going I'm going to accidentally drop spoilers, so I'll stop.

If you're looking for something that is a quick read that manages to be as immersive as something with twice as many pages, this is for you.

* trigger warnings for death, attempted SA/murder, mild violence, amputation and injury, and mild spice

The Crimson Thread by Aspen Kilgore

Release Date: ITS OUT GO GET IT

Elle: a brave and smart older sister who becomes more than determined to save her sister’s life from a deadly injury

Fave Quote: "It cannot be done."
“You will watch me do it."

I’M LATE I KNOW! But I’ve finally finished this ARC and GOODNESS. This book was kind of a wild ride for me, not gonna lie. The Crimson Thread is a y/a short story novella (less than 200 pages) with fantasy and romance elements, featuring Death and his Maiden vibes! AHHH! 😍🥰

You can absolutely feel the different emotions and sacrifices Elle goes through in order to save her sister from the hands of Death.. as well as becoming attached to Death himself. 👀🫣

I give it a 4 ⭐️ with a 1 🌶️ for spice! To me personally, the ending felt a little rushed and I was just slightly confused. But overall, the book was great and I can’t wait to see the rest of the worldbuilding @aspenkilgorewrites has in store!

Thank you for being a part of your ARC team for The Crimson Thread (the book mail PR package for this was AMAZING and I loved it so very much!)✨🫶🏽🤍

This little novella was so so good. Well-written, compelling, emotional, suspenseful. The world building and lore was woven in so seamlessly that it didn’t seem like a big chunk of exposition. Every moment had a purpose.

Elle is such an interesting and deep character. She has the weight of the world on her shoulders in having to take care of her sister and brother-in-law, and keep them all from harm. She has to do the impossible, save her sister from the brink of death, but it’s never been done before. Also, she can actually see “death” and the tether that has him connected to her sister. She also seems to have a special connection with him somehow.

The ending was very satisfying as well.

I highly recommended you pick up this book, and I am looking forward to reading more from this author!

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to Aspen Kilgore and team for the opportunity!

The perfect novella

I was an ARC reader for this and when I tell you I was HOOKED! a strong MFC in a world that's trying to diminish her light! and the world building is so immersive! Definitely the perfect novella to start off a fantasy series!
Elle and Gingel are living the ultimate farm-to-table nightmare, scraping by on their dilapidated homestead. Elle’s been the brains and brawn keeping their heads above water, but things go from bad to "are you kidding me?" when a freak accident throws Gingel into the clutches of Eth, a spooky specter with a permanent death wish for her.

Eth is dead-set (literally) on taking Gingel to the great beyond. But Elle’s not having it. She drags Eth on a wild goose chase through secrets and shadows, where they end up more tangled than a pair of earbuds in a pocket.

With the clock ticking, Elle's stuck in a love triangle with a ghost and her sister. She's got to face her deepest fears and make a gut-wrenching choice. Will she follow her heart or let fate have its way? Stay tuned!

I got so lost in this! For under 200 pages, the pacing, plot and detail was phenomenal. Every one has been screaming for yearning lately; here you go! The relationships between all these characters was endearing and heart breaking. Aspens writing is very reminiscent of Sarah A Parker. It’s detailed and whimsical, dramatic just enough to paint the picture for you. I should be reading my 87454732 arcs, but I NEED to read the other two books in this series!
The sacrifice. The love. The determination of the FMC is just….wow. It’s not like in most fantasy where it’s self serving or even down right selfish and kind of whiney. It’s straight from the heart. And it came straight for MY heart.

I absolutely enjoyed this short read. I just wish there was MORE about Eth and Elle's story. It was a great plot line and I really needed something like this to refresh, I was in a slump and this brought me back out. It is YA but there are moments within the book!

I recommend reading this, I can see how this set up a whole new fantasy world and history and I cannot wait for more.

Now, first of all I don't know who can resist reading this after looking at the gorgeous cover right there.
This new book by Aspen kilgore was an awesome read. As part of the Embers of Nia universe, it can be read like a prequel.
Elle is a determined sister with a self-sacrificing streak, Eth is our new charming grim reaper.( There's a red string of fate connecting them!!! )
With her sister's life in peril, Elle is out on a journey to look for someone who can save her sister.
One of my favourite quotes from the book is
"It would be alright if you weren't well. You don't have to shoulder all the burdens all the time, you know."
This really hit home.
And OK, I DID NOT expect that ending!!! It was perfect!!!

The Crimson Thread by Aspen Kilgore is a YA romantasy with the “Death and the maiden” trope and a hint of forced proximity (you’ll find out why). Elle is the fmc and she is so brave and smart! I love her. She is determined to save her sister from a deadly injury. Eth is … Death who came for Elle’s sister. The story shows the development of Elle and Eth’s relationship which is extremely cute and a little spicy ;).
This book is great, there isn’t much to say. I loved every plot twist and every character, I can’t wait to read more of this world

The Crimson Thread is part of The Embers of Nia universe and lays the ground for all that is to come.

Don't be fooled - while this might read a bit like a prequel, it's full of tension, touches of magic, plenty of mystery and such a cliffhanger!

Elle has been through more than anyone should have to endure, and yet she remains selfless and good in her quest to save her sister. We follow her on the journey... And the ending leaves us *dying* to know what comes next for her.

The spice level was very mild, with mostly implied or fade to black scenes, making this easily accessible by most upper YA. Aspen does warn us that future books will be spicier, so be forewarned.

I read this as an ARC and was delighted to discover another wonderful fantasy writer to follow!
