"You want me to see you as a woman with no weaknesses, but sometimes it is those so-called 'weaknesses' that make us strong...I believe that people are the strongest when they come face to face with their greatest weaknesses."

Wow, this is definitely going to be on my favorite list this year! There was so much I wasn't expecting, so many moments I knew nothing around me and was completely absorbed in their world.
Spies/mysteries have always been one my favorites to read about, so this has been the most perfect book, it has that and sooo much more! Laura Beers is definitely one of my favorites with her characters, she makes you really feel them and all their emotions with her writing, it's just incredible! I just love every single one of her characters, she shows them all how they truly are - the good and bad. And it makes the whole story so beautiful and absolutely impossible to put down.
**And I have to add, she referenced Sir Walter Scott, which is a HUGE plus for me! 😂

✨Life without hope is not worth living.✨

Well that was a great ending to the series! Loved this one so much! Caleb and Simone are spies. They are partnered together on a case. Not only is there the spy mission to work on, which is dangerous and has a mystery to it, there is also the strange mystery behind Simone’s mother’s drowning two years ago. I really loved this story! And oh my goodness the bantering is fantastic! I was laughing so much.I also enjoyed trying to figure out the mysterious elements. And I loved that characters from previous books were a part of this book as well. Caleb and Simone’s relationship is so cute. They banter a lot but then they slowly start opening up and trusting each other. I loved them! Overall, this is a great story and I definitely recommend!

Laura Beers is one of my favorite historical romance writers, not only because I love her characters, but because she combines regency espionage and romance--think regency romantic suspense. Simone Delacourt is a wallflower by day and a daring spy by night, and she's not happy when she's paired with the seemingly insufferable Mr. Caleb Bolingbroke. Caleb is frustrated by the headstrong Simone, however, he's determined to make their partnership work. As they pursue elusive French spies together, his respect and admiration for Simone grow, as does his feelings toward her.

I've seen Simone in the other books in the series and couldn't wait to find out more about her, such as how and why she became a spy for the Crown. She's always worked alone and it was hard for her to accept Caleb as a partner, and she didn't like being told what to do. Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and the relationship between Miss Simone Delacourt and Caleb Bolingbroke definitely had those vibes. I appreciated that the romance between them was not rushed; I felt it unfolded naturally as the characters' mutual annoyance with each other turned to genuine affection as they learned to trust each other.

Needless to say I loved that suspense was prominent in this story, especially as I watched Simone and Caleb unravel a web of secrets and lies. As usual there were twists I didn't see coming. I've loved all of the Lords & Ladies of Mayfair books and Simone and Caleb's story is great ending to the series. I've loved watching all the characters I've come to know get their happily ever after, and though I'm sad to see this series come to an end, I know the author will have more stories coming that will keep me turning pages late into the night.

I received a complimentary digital copy. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.

If you enjoy a clean sweet regency romance with mystery and spies then this book is for you! Both the heroine and the hero of this story are heavily involved in the spy business and neither of them have plans to stop and settle down anytime soon. But when they are paired together on an assignment, they can’t help the sparks that start to fly between them.
Full of danger, betrayal, suspense and swoony kisses this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It also delves into some serious times of mental health during those time periods. Overall I would recommend this book.
Just fyi this book is one of several in a series. Although it probably would have been best to read the previous books, I was still able to follow this story along just fine.

Love this one, it’s my fav of the series

I love this book. It’s got spies and also powerful strong women. I was blown away by the twists and turns in the story. It just was unbelievable. Little by little through the series with seen these two characters and found out about this Terrorist issue in London. So to be able to see the full rest of the story unwind was great. And surprising. I don’t want to give too much away but wow, unexpected. Great book I hate to see this series end.
Rating: PG, clean sweet romance and mystery

“You must promise me that you will always kiss me like that, always.” “I promise.” “Good, because it was perfect,” Caleb said. “You are perfect.”

This fantastic book is filled with witty banter, suspense, spies, and twist and turns.

Simone is daring, brave, fierce, and determined. I love a lady spy, when you add an unwanted partnership it makes it that much better. I enjoyed seeing her and Caleb working together and their dependence on one another. And the family secrets that are uncovered, wow! Caleb is intelligent, protective, and loyal. I loved his determination to break down Simone’s walls and that he sought her ideas and followed her lead in their investigation. I also loved his chats with Annette, Roswell, and Frederick. Simon and Caleb’s proximity brought about some fantastic banter and interesting situations. Their romance was a satisfying slow burn. The epilogue was so fun too!

A few more quotes:
“Taking chances can be scary, but I do believe that there is something that should scare you far worse than anything.” “What is that?” she asked. Leaning closer, he responded, “Missing out on something truly wonderful because you were scared.”

“Having the courage to reveal one’s heart is one of the most daunting and rewarding experiences in life.”

Note: This is the eighth book in the series. It can be enjoyed as a standalone but you will appreciate the characters more having read the previous books.

This review is after a reread.

disappointed

This has been my favorite regency series for a while, because the characters have been likable and I love the balance of a nice regency novel with spy intrigue. However, this book (as has one or two of the others within the series) has once again recycled scenes from the others… the same sort of ‘everyone circles the baddie with pistols’, the same tired Whites scene where the bros try to talk the bachelors into giving love a go (though thank goodness this one didn’t include the “parsons mousetrap” line or I would’ve gagged). The characters and witty banter are far too good in this series to get so lazy and basically just repeat the same recipe.

In addition, considering this one had TWO spies, you would’ve thought the spying would’ve leveled up. Not so. I found the lead characters entirely lacking in the spy gig. Most of the book they’re barely doing anything. Considering they both don’t actually have a job where they clock in many hours aside from the spy gig, and they rise fairly early, you’d expect them to get more work done on a regular basis— but they don’t. They make no attempts to actually SPY on anyone at any given time. They let the lackeys do the actual tailing, and they just bide their time until the theater. And when they were doing the job, they did not seem like seasoned spies. It should’ve been obvious that Juliette would attempt to catch Simone going to and from her spy moments — so her getting caught was a newbie moment. The author never really described them doing anything in a very stealthy or impressive way, except for when Simone got to show her lock-picking skills. As impressive as Simone was supposed to be, she really had more of a stubborn “wing it” personality where she barreled through most tasks and hoped the chips fell ok. Caleb had better moments, because he worked well with Kendrick and the rest, and set up help, had people looked into, etc etc.

I just felt overall it wasn’t as well written as the others. Even the pacing of the romance felt a bit jumbled in places, and confusing on where the characters were actually at mentally on the romance. I would’ve thought the book would be very good considering we are this far in the series— but instead it felt like it took a few steps back. Though, one positive note, was I felt like the villain was quite the villain. A lot of serious and gruesome material.

“You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to be accepted by yourself.”

In this trilling regency story, beautiful Miss Simone Delacourt, an obstinate, headstrong, delightful, and seemingly unnoticed wallflower in the eyes of the ton, hides a secret life as a spy, enjoying the freedom her anonymity affords. When she’s reluctantly paired with Mr. Caleb Bolingbroke, a loyal, humorous, hard working man she can barely tolerate, her carefully crafted life is thrown into great turmoil. While Mr. Caleb Bolingbroke has everything he has ever wanted, he longs for something more. He isn’t happy either, that he is assigned with Miss Delacourt, but he is pleased when he is able to convince Simone to give their partnership a chance. Pursuing elusive French spies is their shared mission, and the stakes are rather high. Despite Miss Delacourt’s initial mistrust, Caleb is rather determined to win her over. As they immerse themselves into the pursuit of the French spies, both Simone and Caleb must risk everything, including their hearts, to save England from an impending threat…

“Love can be found in the most unexpected places, even when you are not looking for it.”

@author_laura_beers oh what a thrilling roller coaster of emotions this story took me on, and in all the best ways. You have wonderfully filled this story with unexpected surprises, moving plot twists, great suspense, delightful humor and wit, endearing real characters, swoony romance, and a lovely happy ending through it all. Well-done! This is a wonderful story to end the series on. I do recommend readers to read this stories in order, to fully love the whole and beautiful story. This book is worth the read!❤️

Title : “Secrets of a Wallflower” (Lords & Ladies of Mayfair Series Book #8)
Author: #LauraBeers
July 17, 2024

Laura Beers' "Secrets of a Wallflower" is a delightful Regency romance that wraps up the Lords & Ladies of Mayfair series with a satisfying mix of intrigue and heartwarming romance. Miss Simone Delacourt, a seemingly unnoticed wallflower, leads a double life as a spy, enjoying her anonymity. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she's paired with Mr. Caleb Bolingbroke, a man she finds difficult to tolerate. Caleb, though initially unhappy with the assignment, is determined to make their partnership work. As they chase elusive French spies, the high stakes force them to rely on each other, slowly unraveling a web of secrets and changing their initial perceptions. The chemistry between Simone and Caleb develops naturally as they navigate their mission and their growing feelings.

The author does a great job balancing romance and espionage, creating an engaging narrative. The story's pacing and character development are well-crafted, leading to a heartwarming conclusion. "Secrets of a Wallflower" is a charming read for fans of clean Regency romances, offering a blend of adventure and love that makes it a worthy end to the series. There's a lot going on in this story, with plenty of crazy secrets Simone and Caleb discover. Simone can be quite rude to Caleb, which didn’t endear her character to me, but she improves and is nice by the end of the book. Overall, it's an enjoyable read despite some character flaws.

French spies, English spies, and a little romance thrown in...oh my!

I'm not going to lie... I love a good female spy story. This story takes the thread and keeps pulling it and pulling it all the way to the end! I had my suspicions, and most of them were relatively accurate, but there were many layers to the spy part of this tale. I can't give anything away here. You just have to check it out for yourself. 🤫

The romance is a combination of enemies-to-friends, friends-to-lovers, and marriage of convenience. Simone and Caleb are unwilling partners at best in the beginning. It turns out that their boss is playing matchmaker... I love it! Their evolving banter is so cute and witty. You may even find some nods to Pride and Prejudice, Hamilton, Ever After, and Sweet Home Alabama cleverly entwined throughout. But they are constantly talking themselves out of deep feelings because it's too dangerous for spies to be in love and forbid someone dampen the other's independence! They give themselves the "we're just partners" pep talk a lot! It was super refreshing to have Caleb have friends who were encouraging him to take the plunge and fall in love!

I really enjoyed this story, and once the mysteries started unraveling, I was here for it! (Note that while this can be a standalone book, this is the latest in the series.)

Thank you to the author for including me on her Launch Team and gifting me a copy of her wonderful book for me to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.

A clean, regency romance featuring Simone and Caleb. Two independently minded spies for the crown that are thrust together as partners, against their objections. They must find a way to work together to take down two French spies that are embedded in England's society and a threat to everyone.

These two characters were an absolute joy to spend time with. Simone is confident and brave in her abilities, not wanting or needing anyone to help her. Caleb is equally as confident and neither of them really want to work with a partner. But when their case turns personal and involves Simone very directly, they find a way to work together to untangle all of the secrets. With the added benefit of falling for one another.

Featuring mystery, espionage and the ton, this is a regency romance you won't want to miss. Casual and fun banter between characters in the midst of a war on England is not easy feat, but these two agents have it all covered and the blossoming of their love for one another was adorable to perfection!

This last book in the Lords & Ladies of Mayfair wraps up the series. This series is best read in order as many of the characters and stories carry over from book to book. In this story we have already met Miss Simone Delacourt and Mr Caleb Bolingbroke in previous books. Both of them are undercover spies working for the crown. They have been trying to discover where the French spies are hiding that have managed to come into England. In the last book Simone had saved Caleb's life. They are now forced to work together to find the spies.

Simone is a very beautiful woman but for years she has tried to become invisible by sticking around the wallflowers. Simone's father hasn't shown her any attention since her mother died but suddenly he has decided she must find someone to marry or he will pick someone for her.

Caleb isn't happy being paired with Simone but as they spend time together trying to discover the spies, thoughts of her start to fill his mind. When they finally come into contact with the spies, they will be put into some difficult situations that will cause them to have to declare a fake engagement.
There are some hidden secrets in this story that will be revealed that will cause Simone much pain. Caleb does what he can to be there for her in the midst of her struggles. Caleb and Simone both have no desire to be married but will their fake engagement become more real to them as they face down the spies determined to bring destruction in England?

This is a great ending to the series which I really enjoyed.

I received a copy of this from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

Regency spies and romance? Yes, please! Author Laura Beers has written an exciting story with plot twists and surprises that I didn’t see coming. I loved the banter and the resistance that Simone and Caleb had to each other. She detests him and doesn’t give him a fair chance until they become partners in order to save the British Empire.

Things I loved:
Spying
Knife throwing
Banter
He falls first
Danger
Daring rescue

This was the first book in the Lords and Ladies of Mayfair series I read, so it can be read as a standalone. However, I am interested in reading the other books in the series because of the characters that are part of the story. I highly recommend reading this cloak and dagger story that has a clean romance with it as well. Readers of all ages will enjoy this fast-paced adventurous story.

This is the 8th book in a series called Lords and Ladies of Mayfair. It is the first book I have read in that series, but not my first book by Laura Beers. I'd listened to some of a different series of hers that had Spies set in the Regency time period. I had no idea going into this one that spies were involved. From the context of this story, I'm assuming the series contains quite a bit about spies.

I did enjoy the concept of the story and the plot. I like some intrigue to go along with my romance. Dual spies was a nice touch to this story.

The weakest part for me is the dialog. In the previous series, I thought it may have been the narrator, since I listened to those books. But I read this one and had the same feeling. I was also not a fan of the plot line involving a mistress.

I do thank the author for the complimentary copy of the ebook. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I couldn’t put it down
This book had me thinking just one more page constantly. Simone is a wallflower by choice. As a wallflower she is ignored by society as she wanders at events gathering information, a perfect cover for a spy. When she is assigned to work with Caleb in the identification of two French spies, she is angry, feeling that she doesn’t need or want the help with Caleb feeling the same. However, as they start their investigation they begin to rely on each other and they will need all of their skills to unravel the knot of treachery, theft, secrets, and danger before harm befalls innocent people. A great read I can highly recommend. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

I don’t want the series to be over! But if it has to end, it’s going to go out with a bang! And did it ever. This might be my favorite of the series. I thought the plot was so captivating and surprising. There’s so many different angles the author could’ve taken, this one Intrigued me. The enemies to lovers trope was perfect, and I was totally invested in the working relationship that moved to a romantic relationship seamlessly. It was also nice to connect with some of the other characters from other books. It can be read as a standalone, but the whole series is so enjoyable I recommend reading them all.

This was a nice conclusion to the series! I loved how all the connecting threads wrapped up and I very much enjoyed seeing Simone and Caleb not only work together as partners, but completely fall in love!

There were some great twists and turns as usual and a whole lot of spy things going on. Caleb and Simone unlocked the key to the mystery and with the help of all our previous characters, saved the day!

The ending was sweet and satisfying. I enjoyed this book and this series very much!

Regency romance, espionage, & treason

What more could one ask for in a Regency read? If you’ve been reading the other Mayfair books this is Caleb’s story. In the last book we learned that Caleb’s cover had been blown but really didn’t learn much else…in this book we meet Simone again - the wallflower no one really notices. Of course, as a spy, Simone prefers to be unnoticed and all seems to be going well until she is partnered with Caleb Bolingbroke. Together they must discover the identity of threats to the Crown - two French spies. Who are they and where are they now? Who are they working with? What nefarious plans do they have?

I love this series. Caleb and Simone are both spies for the crown. Both are very committed to the philosophy that King and Country before their own happiness. Simone is fiercely independent and doesn't rely on anyone's help. But then Caleb and Simone are paired together for the assignment of finding two French spies. I love that we get to see the other characters in this series make appearances. This story is full of twists and turns that make for a great read. I loved this book and would highly recommend it for those that love a clean romance with suspense.

If this series has to end, this book is a satisfying way to do so. Caleb and Simone have a lovely push and pull in their relationship as they partner together working as agents of the Crown to uncover a plot against England. This story has it all… Intrigue, mystery, danger, romance, and a few surprises. We get to spend time with favorite characters from previous books, which is always a treat. Although a standalone story, it is infinitely better to have read the earlier books in the series first. There are story and character developments that are much more meaningful if read in order.

I always love a good Agents of the Crown book. In this last Lords and Ladies of Mayfair book, our agents are still searching for the French spies. Simone reluctantly agrees to partner with another, Agent Caleb Bolinbroke. Secrets are revealed as the two learn to work together. Enjoyed seeing friends from past books in this tale as well. One thing I really appreciate about this book, is that the author gives you the extended epilogue at the end of the book, without making the reader jump through hoops, so to speak.

Compelling pace and plot.

I read each book in this series quite quickly, the pace and action were perfect, pulling me through the book. The only thing that jarred was the use of language. Regency romances by definition are set in England, but at times the tone and speech rhythms were distinctly American, and the attitude of the servants was unrealistic.
I realise that these books are written for the American audience, and so understand why this is, but, as a British reader it distracted me from the story.

I enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the plot. The characters kind of annoyed me in the beginning, but their development was good and I liked them by the end :) A nice, quick read with some mystery, suspense and romance.

Clean!
Language/profanity: none
Sex/innuendo: sweet kisses
Gore/Violence: Mild fight scenes, descriptions of poor conditions and treatments in prison like facilities.
Dark/Creepy: none, though some conversations about poor treatment of mentally ill patients.

We've met Simone and Caleb in earlier stories and they clash fantastically. This does not change with this book. While it moves a little slower than I like at first, the story really picks up the pace through the book and ends with a lot of twists and turns and surprises that all fit together amazingly. Clean. Happy ending. Happier than expected even. Enjoyed reading and it fits well with the other books in the series, which I recommend reading first.

Simone and Caleb
There is a lot going on in this story. Never a dull moment with all the crazy secrets Simone and Caleb discover.
Simone is quite rude to Caleb. I'm not sure why he insists on being nice to her because she hasn't earned his kindness. Of course she improves and is nice at the end of the book. But still, why is it socially acceptable to treat men poorly?
While I found the story intriguing, the writing style is not my cup of tea.

clean romance

Great “conclusion “ of an excellent series!

This is a standalone book but I loved reading each in sequence as the reader sees previous characters in each book.

I enjoyed the enemies to lovers trope but the banter between the hero and heroine was the best!

The author did a fantastic job with the plot with all the details and twists.

If you enjoy spies, intrigue, suspense and romance you will enjoy this book and whole series!

Oh! The mystery! The suspense! The romance! This story has it all and more. I enjoyed reading as Simone and Caleb got to know and love each other. I enjoyed trying to figure out the mystery. I enjoyed wondering what would happen next. And I enjoyed the outcome. This is a great addition to the Lords & Ladies of Mayfair series.
