An Ancient elven court steeped in intrigue. Mythic assassins carry-out slaughter wholesale. A demon lord chews through victims like a quarterback on painkillers, and all the while a sinister organisation of twisted mages seek to further their unspeakable agenda.
When Eddie and the Family are called to the Autumn kingdom to help in an ancient Elven rite, they cross the Winter Fey, and Eddie ends up fighting to survive against an undead dark elf, frost giants, assassins and trolls.
If that’s not enough, the family finally track down Bethshiel, the fleeing Demon lord, and they corner him into a showdown that they’re not sure they can win.
Dark secrets come to light and past collides with present as Eddie and the family power through byzantine intrigue and reckless danger. As the stakes get ever bigger they are faced with the possibility that they just might not make it out alive.
Court of Fey is the second instalment in the Rules of Magic, Urban fantasy series. If you like intense action, fantastic magic and relatable characters then you won’t want to put this series down!
I studied Journalism at college, then got a degree in English lit and Ancient History and later a Masters degree in Business. I've been writing for ages and have too many other works, books and novellas that need to see the light of day, and finally resolved to make it happen - and escape the clutches of Officetopia and the grey suited sunlight assassins...So here we are.
I also teach Martial arts, run a table-top roleplay group and live in a furrocracy (Where the 4 rescue dogs rule as tyrants from their lofty couch perches). I have a daughter and she's amazing.
Court Of Fey sees the family reunited, well mostly, Tod the accuracy mage and Colm the Plastic mage are still hot on the heals of Bethshiel the Demon Lord, injured but still an incredible threat to all. The other members of this close knit found family of Mages that fight the good fight find themselves plunged into the intrigue of Elven politics as the Elven Queen asks for a service from Eddie and his group. But not everyone is happy they are there and it will take everything they have to navigate the treacherous Elven Court, the Unseelie are after all a law unto themselves. And of course they still have the dark evil of a Demon Lord to deal with.
This is a considerably darker book than the first, and as the plot moves forward there are hints of even darker times to come.
The author blends the real world and fantasy seamlessly and the world created feels organic and true. Mixing the high fantasy of Elven kin and Court with the everyday use of modern weaponry and drones.
The theme of found family runs through the story and the interactions between the expanded family is a joy to read and its that and the unpredictably brutal nature of the action that leaves the reader with a real sense of unease, when battle comes to the group, a real sense no one is safe pervades.
The action once again is handled extremely well, easy to follow but also savage in its execution and there is lots of it.
The characters are well rounded and believable and so are their actions. My favourites being Eddie of course but also his apprentice Mathilda, who is constantly growing not only as a mage, but as a character. Also and without a doubt the standout Is Odelia the Bulldog/Were Bulldog companion to Eddie. This book and indeed the series so far is a perfect example of urban fantasy and easily deserves a spot up there with the rest of the best. Roll on book three.
What a unique writing style portraying a new twist on the Urban Fantasy genre. With the vast majority of Urban Fantasy told from the first person, which I thoroughly enjoy, the depth of one character's thoughts and emotions; Lance Horsman spins this tale from the Narrator perspective, yet a Narrator that knows the inner workings of the hearts and minds of these characters. This allows us readers to delve deep into all these wonderful characters' stories. And, what a wonderful blend of magic and Native Ritual, with a sprinkling of humor! Superbly thought up, and based in so much real Native and Historical concepts that us readers are left scratching our heads, wondering if Lance is actually an ancient shaman sharing real secrets from his Tribe... Outstanding! Read This Book!
In "Court of Fey: Rules of Magic, vol. 2," Lance Horsman immerses readers in a thrilling world of modern magic and ancient intrigue. As Eddie and his Family navigate the dangerous waters of the Autumn Kingdom, they face undead dark elves, frost giants, assassins, and trolls. The stakes are higher than ever as they confront the fleeing Demon lord, Bethshiel, in a showdown that could cost them their lives. Horsman's inventive use of magic and contemporary setting makes for a gripping urban fantasy that fans won't be able to put down. Highly recommended.
