Miramar

Rate this book
Our graphic Novella is set on the ocean world of Miramar, far in humanity's future. With 90% of the planet's surface covered by water, there are few land masses to slow down the high winds and powerful ocean currents, making surviving on the planet difficult. But there's one sleepy little archipelago, in the wind shadow of a volcanic mountain range, that provides the people of Miramar a home.

It is on the Island of Bilbao, in that sleepy archipelago, where the story begins. The island awakens one day to find their bakery aflame - and their town baker, Varga, kidnapped by pirates! Not only that, but the pirates have managed to steal all of her sourdough starter, too!

The town Priest-bot, Father Frank, has been increasingly on the outs with the villagers, ever since his reactor broke and they had to switch him to an ethanol generator (consuming half of the island's liquor, just to keep him running). But Frank has a path for his own redemption - a RESCUE PLAN!

Set in the same sci-fi universe as HABITAT (Image Comics, 2016) and GRIZ GROBUS, Miramar is another tale of life after the collapse of interstellar empire. But Miramar asks a unique question - can good food reform a tribe of cannibal pirates?

A perfectly enjoyable and delightful comic set in the same universe as Griz Grobus. Manifests the same themes and scale: a small story, relatively low stakes, the centrality of food to human coexistence and the resolution of conflicts (somewhat) peacefully. I personally liked the artstyle of the previous comic more - this one is slightly less detailed and more dynamic - but it's still very colourful and fun. I wish it was longer, or had more side-stories in a collected format like the previous book did.

Simon Roy's latest has finished art by Stephan Tosheff but Roy is credited with the layouts so the storytelling is quite similar to his other books. I quite enjoyed the more polished art from Tosheff although I'm a huge Roy fan.

Set in the same universe of Gris Grobus - we explore another planet the ocean world Miramar. Just one part of the planet has a few islands each has a different tribe. Conflict erupts immediately as a peaceful fishing and bread-baking village is attacked by pirates and their town baker is kidnapped along with their sourdough starter.

It's quite a lot of fun! I'm really enjoying this universe Roy has created with Griz Grobus (and I believe Habitat may be in the same universe too). With Griz Grobus coming out in 2023, this one in 2024... can I hope to have a new book every year? That would be amazing.
