Moederdag

Grace is na twintig jaar in het buitenland teruggekeerd naar Londen om voor haar moeder te zorgen die op sterven ligt. Als ze een blanco moederdagkaart in de post krijgt, is ze in de war en ongerust. Wie kan het haar gestuurd hebben en waarom? Ze is namelijk zelf geen moeder.

Dan komt er nog een moederdagkaart aan. Daarna komen er telefoontjes waarbij er geen geluid te horen is aan de andere kant van de lijn. Achtervolgd door verontrustende flashbacks begint Grace zichzelf kwijt te raken. Iemand heeft het op haar gemunt. Iemand die weet wat ze heeft gedaan. Iemand die haar confronteert met het verleden waar ze al zo lang voor vlucht.

Tracey’s latest psychological thriller, The Perfect Holiday, is published by Boldwood Books. Before writing fiction, she worked in theatre and community arts. As well as acting, she ran drama workshops in healthcare settings, focusing on adults with mental health issues. Her short stories have been widely published in anthologies and literary magazines, and her feature writing has appeared in Stella magazine, Woman’s Own and The Sydney Morning Herald. Her first psychological thriller, She Chose Me, was published by Legend Press in 2018.
She has a PhD in Creative Writing from The University of Edinburgh and works as a literary consultant and writing tutor. She is also the Creative Director of The Bridge Awards, a philanthropic organisation that provides micro-funding for art and community projects.

I came across this book on Amazon Prime subscriptions when I was browsing ebooks. Although it was a slow burn thriller read I liked the plot and the way TJ Emerson narrated. But I found myself skimming a few chapters as I was getting bored and I wasn't really hooked on. 3.5 stars out of 5!

Wasn't sure what the point of this story was. A woman starts receiving mother's day cards even though she is not a mother, however we learn through flashbacks that she was pregnant when young and either terminated the baby or had her and adopted her out.

But the p.o.v.s from the daughter are wacky. She's just not right and so it's a weird, slow burn, boring cat and mouse game from daughter's p.o.v. though we don't know why. She had wonderful adoptive parents so who knows?

This was just not for me.

A mother and the child she gave away.

Mother's Day is the story of Grace, who gave her daughter up for adoption and has been haunted by that decision, and Cassie, who believes that she was that baby. There are of course many twists and turns, and Cassie is not the most trustworthy character but it was the atmosphere of this book that I enjoyed the most, and I thought that it ended perfectly.

Absolutely boring
This is so not how a thriller ought to be
Had to skim-read it since nothing much happened in the entire book
Authors, we need rocking, edge-of-the-seat thrillers, slow burn would be nice only if you have twists at regular intervals, every few chapters.

Addictive

T.J. Emerson groeide op als dochter van een militair en verhuisde vaak. Ze werkte in de theaterwereld en gaf workshops drama in ziekenhuizen. Momenteel werkt ze als literair consultant en schrijfdocent. Als auteur debuteerde ze bij Boldwoodbooks met de thriller De perfecte vakantie, een boek dat op Amazon meteen een bestseller werd. Moederdag is haar tweede thriller. Tracey Emerson schrijft graag psychologische thrillers waarin sociale kwesties en de donkere kant van de mens een rol spelen.

Na twintig jaar in het buitenland is Grace teruggekeerd naar Londen, waar haar terminale moeder in een zorginstelling verblijft. Onverwachts krijgt Grace een kaart voor Moederdag in de brievenbus. Eigenaardig, want Grace is geen moeder en het is niet eens Moederdag. Een tweede kaart volgt en er volgen nog meer verontrustende acties. Wat Grace aanvankelijk nog toeschreef aan een vergissing, wordt echter een bron van angst. Grace raakt verontrust en in de war, want haar verleden lijkt haar in te halen. Een verleden met een goed bewaard geheim en dat dreigt nu aan het licht te komen.

Moederdag start met het eerste hoofdstuk dat zich afspeelt in het verleden. Het is eerder een vage, korte proloog met een nog onbekende persoon in de ik-vorm. Een fijne introductie, want dit korte fragment prikkelt meteen de nieuwsgierigheid. Wat volgt zijn hoofdstukken in het heden die afwisselen tussen Grace, het hoofdpersonage en haar antagonist Cassie. Het verhaal van Cassie wordt aanvankelijk wat verwarrend weergegeven, maar dat is een bewuste en goede keuze van de auteur. Te snel wordt echter al veel duidelijkheid gegeven, wat het verhaal op spanning doet inboeten. Het wordt daardoor ook vrij voorspelbaar.

Af en toe wordt er opnieuw in het verleden gedoken, dat zorgt voor een mooie afwisseling. Die is ook wel nodig, want de schrijfstijl leunt op regelmatige uitgebreide beschrijvingen in de vorm van herinneringen en vroegere gebeurtenissen. Soms net iets te uitgebreid waardoor de focus wat moeilijker behouden blijft. Ondanks deze minpuntjes evolueert het verhaal naar een psychologisch spel en dat leest wel fijn. De ontwikkeling van de personages zit wel goed. De opbouw van het verhaal zorgt voor een vlotte leeservaring, maar de auteur heeft toch wel kansen laten liggen. Sommige fragmenten hadden best wat spannender gemaakt kunnen worden en bepaalde informatie had langer verborgen mogen blijven. Naar het einde toe komt er toch nog een kleine, maar fijne twist. Moederdag heeft potentieel voor verschillende afrondingen. De auteur kiest voor een afgewerkt verhaal. De optie voor een open einde was de betere keuze bij dit verhaal geweest.

T.J. Emerson zet met Moederdag een psychologisch spel neer waar de nodige spanning nog te veel ontbreekt, maar waar zeker groeipotentieel aanwezig is. Een fijn boek om te lezen, maar niet meer dan dat.

J’ai bien aimé le livre. J’ai mis du temps à le finir mais je trouvais que ça allait vite et c’est ce qui m’a beaucoup plu. Les avants et après de l’histoire, j’adore. Il y a eu des rebondissements que je m’y attendais pas. Je recommande🤰.
