The Kitten series will always remain my shining star. Rae and her family is what got me into writing and what's kept me going. As I venture off towards new characters and storylines, one thing that will stay the same is the butch/femme dynamic. I have even dabbled with butch/soft butch non-binary characters. I love masculine women and everything about them, from their charm, chivalry, style and everything else in between.

This past spring I happily signed a contract with Painted Hearts Publishing for my new book, A Jade's Diamond, that will be released in the new year. I hope to continue working with the lgbtq publisher for more great stories I write.

I look forward to hearing your opinion toward my older books and my newer books that will be published in the near future.

This was a difficult book for me to rate.

The first part is extremely enjoyable, definitely at least four stars.

I found Rae’s story exciting and cathartic. She is truly free. She fights, curses, and loves whoever she wants. Her complicated relationship with Ruby and Christine is hot and sweet at the same time. The dynamics between the three of them is really well done, even with a few bumps along the way. She lives in a town where most of the people are her allies, there appears to be only one homophobic person in the entire place who is promptly put in her place simply by Rae introducing herself. I couldn’t stop reading, it was so dramatic and also loving with lots of hotness and badassery.

The POV of first person switching to third was one I have only seen once before and it works. Aside from a few editing issues and some rough spots this is a dynamic read.

The second part was very difficult for me to finish. I had to skim a lot. It contains a lot of violence against women and an underlying theme of femme women being natural victims, plus heteronormative roles in butch-femme relationships. The ending was strongly foreshadowed and I really hoped for some kind of twist, some hope that it wouldn’t play out the way I’ve seen a lot in lesfic, but alas, it ended the way I expected.

Overall, this is a mostly fast-paced and dynamic read. Rae challenges a lot of typical butch stereotypes and remains completely badass. It ends on a kind of cliffhanger, and promises even more drama and heart wrenching events to come.

Rating: 3.5 stars

Take the world in a love embrace

Rae is a biker and the leader of her (mostly male) crew. She lives, drinks, and fights hard, and she loves her girls.

This book had me from the opening pages. Rae's voice is unlike any I've read before, a confluence of machismo and vulnerability that really worked for me. Rae's is a violent and sometimes bloody world and I enjoyed my ride through its often rough terrain.

Readers should be aware they're in for a lot of "on screen" sex and violence, with some darker moments described after-the-fact. Author Char Dafoe uses a mix of first and third person narrative which I initially found jarring but once I got my head around it it worked well. There's a teaser/cliffhanger ending as seen in big franchise films - this story wraps up nicely leaving readers with a hint of what is to come.

4.5 "so in love it’s gross” stars. Very recommended.

Spoilers ahead:

2 stars because the writing itself isn't awful or anything.. it's the plot I have serious issues with..

The main character Rae can't control her temper and mostly tries to solve conflicts with her fists. In these moments she sees red and always has to be stopped by someone before killing a person. So we are talking serious violent outbursts here.. just to be clear..

The few moments she actually uses her brain she makes things worse.. like her fiancée getting kidnapped and then raped..
Talking about rape.. Rae can get a bit rapey herself.. her gf had to punch her in the face and flee out of their bedroom in order to get her to stop.. but since Rae was drunk it's OK, right?

That pretty much sums up the problems I have with this book. It has very problematic messages:

Sexual violence is easy to forgive when the other person is drunk

Violent, toxic and possessive behavior are a sign of love

I want to add that I liked the first 20% of the book.. it went downhill from there..

I really enjoyed this! Rae is one badass biker chick with a hell of a temper, lol. The sex scenes were hot, and I love the relationship between Rae and Ruby. I also really enjoyed the parental love from Glenn and Pat. Pat's motherly love (and when she clipped Rae around the head) was hilarious, haha. I also laughed out loud when Rae had the 'glittery moisturiser' mishap! I loved reading about Rae doing her thaaaang...fixing her bike or repairing bits and bobs around the house. Sexy soft butch indeed. The book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger so keen to see what happens next.

I read a different book by the author and decided to reread the series. I’m glad I did. Rae is a badass. The dynamic between all three is amazing. Christina brings out a whole new side of Rae nobody has seen. If you are looking for sex, motorcycles, tattoos, hot women, and more sex. This is your book!

Whoa! What a ride! What the hell did I just read!

The author had me at "Fuck!" and I was lost to Rae until the last page. The women in this story were not like any women I've read before. Rae and Ruby were fluid in how they presented themselves. Not feminine but not exactly butch. They sat in the middle of the spectrum which made the violence or the foul language from either of them all the more exciting and entertaining. Christina was a sweetheart with extra sweet sprinkled on top. She stood out amongst the entire Dark Angels including Rae, the woman after Christina's heart. I loved how protective Rae was even if it bordered on possessiveness at times which then would lead to an angry, violent outburst from Rae. I think that was her true feelings she had for Christina trying to gain the upper hand over her irrational and slightly paranoid mentality. Rae's outlook on life had always been negative, always looking over her shoulder, sleeping with one eye open, and when Christina, all smiles and sunshine careened into Rae's dark but ordered life, everything upended bringing chaos to Rae's mind and heart. Ruby was loads of fun and she was a great touchstone for Rae whenever Rae's head would get the better of her. It was so obvious that Ruby was in love with Rae even when she tries to brush it off. The love is clearly in her eyes and in her actions toward Rae. And Rae, well as much as she is this badass, fearless, frickin' tall, sex-on-legs, she needs to get her head out of her ass when it comes to her feelings other than anger and see what's going on right in front of her. I mean, yeah, she's someone I want backing me when shyte hits the fan, but I'd probably kill her if I was in a romantic relationship with her. Fack, she needs to grow up, just how Christina tells her. Good for Christina!

Characters aside, the story was wicked. Every chapter had action, something was always going on and I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what was going to happen next. I was heartbroken for Christina all throughout the entire story because she didn't deserve the things that happened to her, but I was relieved to know that Rae would make it better, and she did.

I look forward to reading the sequel and maybe, hopefully, Rae will have smartened up when it comes to her women.

Buckle up for this delicious ride

Whoa this book was very intense. I loved the characters in this freaking book! I'm in complete awe with this author.

This is a very steamy story about Rae. She is one tough cookie! She is fascinated with two girl Christina and Ruby. Who will she pick? Or will she have them both?

For a debut novel from Char Dafoe, this was a good story. I really enjoyed reading about the crazy life lead by Rae and her girls, Ruby and Christina. This book just has a bit of everything and is very vibrant and enjoyable.

The dialogue in the book really suits the nature of club leader Rae, who is doing all she can to protect her love Christina, and her best friend Ruby from all the horrors of the world.

This was an action packed read, with moments of excitement, worry, and pure happiness. Seeing Rae develop as a character as she fell in love was beautiful. Christina is an adorable sweetheart who will just melt you like she does Rae, and Ruby is so cool!

Rae is just one of those characters you have to connect with to understand, and boy is she misunderstood in some ways. She has such a caring heart, but doesn’t handle her affairs of the heart particularly well. She has a lot going on, and a lot to deal with in this story which is great!
I would definitely recommend Kitten to anyone who is into that rock/biker scene, and if you are not but just feel like branching out and having a taste of such a different life, give it a read and take a look at life through Rae’s eyes!

I am looking forward to reading Part Two, and seeing what else life has in store for Rae, and the girls!

This review is for the whole Kitten series because once you start you just won't stop!
Rae is dynamite!
Her life is wild and unbridled just the way she likes it but in a legal way.
She founded her club Dark Angels on her principles and her members love her dearly which is mutual.
This story is about love and loss, about wild lust and boundaries that are crossed.
Rae experiences boundless love for the first time that she would kill for and maybe even does? A love that lets her experience immense happiness and enormous pain.
This is not the classic f/f love story.
They're tough women with wonderful characters and a great club community.
However, I have to say that the third part was really difficult for me.
I just hate it when a favorite character goes through such extremely difficult times and suffers.
Ruby and Rae have been my absolute dream team couple since book 1 and book 3 made me really mad that I didn't know if I could finish reading.
But Char Dafoe, as always, brought it to an extremely cool ending…is it the end...? ;)
I love this series! A must read!

There is a lot potential in the book and author but a few areas that could be improved to achieve a better story and character development. I enjoyed the story the author was telling, but it could have been so much better for me.

I anticipated given the book that it was a butch character, which a large part of the time seem to be the intent, however there were a lot of areas where that fell. I'm probably old school so maybe it bothered me more than many others who will read the book. Rae was butch in so many ways as the leader of the biker club, etc. However, the times where she was dressing up as a femme, showing off the boobs and "giggling" took me out of the story completely.

The sex scenes also didn't work through out the book inline with the character. More of a balance between a good F @$& and making love. She's a badass who likes sex but there was only one real scene that was inline with that character, a couple more to even out the gentle side.

I liked the match of the leads and how they offset each other personality wise and toss in the Ruby relationship and it's a nice mix. A little less of the crazy, yelling and fighting and more on the interaction and growth of the characters through out the book.

Another round with an editor would have picked up on some items that seemed out of place or unnecessary, etc.

Over all the story was there, I liked the characters but had a difficult time with the butch/femme thing through out the book. I'll read a follow up to the story because I liked the characters and look to see if there is an improvement in editing.

Really liked this, especially the characters' interactions.

Great book.
The relationship between the characters is interesting and complicated. Rae is kinda hard to love and I have to admit I read the last chapters hoping she'll change a bit, she is too intense and impulsive, loving the girls but can't see much past her POV.
Ruby is the sexy, responsible, stable one in this story (and Pat obviously). She is always there for Rae and Christina, no matter what happens. She is my favorite.
The story is full with drama, but in a good way.
I really enjoyed this book and I'm definitely reading the sequels, and highly recommend it.

Char Dafoe writes a compelling story with well developed characters. The chemistry is strong between the MCs.
This book had me intrigued from the beginning. I have a book hangover from the emotions and feelings this book brought forth. There is always something going on that you just can't help but hang on for the ride and keep turning the page. I look forward to the next book.

KITTEN’s main character, bad-girl Rae, felt so incredibly real to me as I read this novel. She’s full of raw emotion, she’s highly sexually charged, she isn’t afraid to throw a punch, yet she’s still vulnerable to falling in love. But love can be more than a little complicated when you have a past like Rae has...

This story fully immersed me in the intensity of biker lifestyle. Author Char Dafoe took me into Rae’s world with the passion and dedication of an author truly connected to the subject matter. Gritty, erotic, and full of complex emotions, KITTEN is one wild ride.

28/12 - Bikers and lesfic to boot! Count me in.

29/12 - Read sample, not for me. And, for once, this picky reader isn't going to go into depth as to why. The issues I had with the narrative probably won't bother the next reader.

TW mention of SA

After reading through reviews, and seeing a good amount of positive ones, I decided to give this book a go.

If I could turn back time I would probably tell myself to not bother. Maybe this works for others but it didn’t for me.

Rae was over the top toxic and possessive, not even in a ‘oh my gosh she’ll do anything for the love of her life’ way but in a ‘girl you are in your mid 30s please never have a relationship with anyone ever again, especially not a 20 year old’.

Also - the whole thing with Ruby??? What the actual f was that about. This weird fictional universe has no boundaries and so many double standards and hypocrisy. It’s impossible to really get to know a character because one minute they’re like ‘OMFG a girl gave you her phone number??? Screw you, you cheating bitch!!’ And then the next they’re like ‘oh hehe you and your best friend that used to fuck all the time and still are weird and suspicious are groping each other in our house? Teehee you guys are so silly!’

Finally - I’m sorry then this 20 year old girl who has been manipulated to hell and back gets kidnapped and r a p e d???? Because her geriatric girlfriend decided to use her as bait?? And didn’t tell her??

Oh yeah AND THEN she keeps the baby and they’re all happy and then we get proposal number 2 (!).

Girl..??

I gave it 2 stars because I kind of liked Christina and was really hoping she would kick Rae to the curb. I was rooting for you girl

FAVORITE QUOTE/QUOTES
"You can push me, you can hit me, you can throw shit at me, but it's not gonna stop me from protecting you and making sure you are safe..." - Rae

"There is nothing you can't do or say to me, because I am not leaving you. I cannot breathe without you. I cannot live without you." - Rae

A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOK/HOW DID IT MAKE ME FEEL
This book was a bit eye opening to me. It almost has a triangle feel. I was so intrigued by the dynamics that Rae had with Christina and Ruby. And I just wanted to keep learning more.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
I love that Rae was so hot headed. She fell hard for Christina. Christina was trying to help soften her. But Rae was very head strong and would fly off if she thought someone she loved was in danger and especially if it was Christina.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK
I loved these characters. I love a damsel in distress and Christina was in danger and Rae was trying to protect her from the danger in multiple ways. Rather than being direct. I appreciated that she wanted to keep her safe in all ways.

MY FAVORITE PART- THIS IS GOING TO BE COVERED UNDER SPOILER

TROPES
motorcycle club - sapphic - messy

Wow. This was the first book I've read by this author and I have to say she is now an author that I'll read again and again.

I will admit there were times I got lost because it jumped around but I think a big part of that may have been me. Even in my times of confusion I would go back and reread what had me confused because the storyline had me wanting more and more.

Read this book all the way through and be prepared because there could be triggers in this book because there were for me. But that doesn't stop me from moving on to Book 2.

Char Dafoe wrote this book with heart and soul. I felt what each character felt. The book was written so well it drew me in and Nad me feel like I was part of the story not just reading a book.

Rae and Christina are not your typical love story. Rae is a tough butch and is used to her life until she meets a shy sweet Christina. Rae is rough and tumble and very different from Christina. Rae has to learn how to be committed and give up her loose ways. Christina has a past and it comes into play in the story. I recommend this book for those who like a not so sweet love story.

This was an amazing debut by Char Dafoe! It is a raw and edgy story with a pretty badass main charcter. The plot mores along nicely and any flaws will be worked out with experince. Everyone needs to give this new face in the lesbian fiction scene a read. Trust me you will love Rae!

This was an amazing book. Rae and Christina are destined for each other. Rae is protective and loyal but she is broken in her own sort of way. You can’t help but love her. Add Ruby and the gang to the mix and they form their own special, wonderful family. I sincerely enjoyed this wonderful journey.
