Book Review: Airborne to Arnhem: Personal Reminiscences of the Battle of Arnhem, Operation Market, 17th–26th September 1944 by Grant R. Newell

Grant R. Newell's Airborne to Arnhem is a compelling and deeply human third volume in his extensive series on the British experience during Operation Market Garden. Newell is both a soldier and a seasoned interviewer, and he delivers a straightforward, poignant account of one of the most famous chapters in British airborne history.

Focusing primarily on the actions of the 4th Parachute Brigade, 4 Squadron Royal Engineers, and numerous Royal Artillery units within both the British First Airborne Division and Horrocks' XXX Corps, Newell's narrative is enriched further by attention to the glider crews and elements of the Polish First Independent Parachute Brigade. The scope is ambitious, but his method—relying heavily on first-person accounts—keeps the story grounded and intensely personal.

This book isn't a distant retelling of strategy and logistics; Airborne to Arnhem gives voice to those who fought and survived the chaos that was Operation Market Garden. These firsthand narratives provide an unvarnished view of the battle. While the men of the British airborne indeed fought with courage, this story is not about battlefield heroics but rather about grim endurance in the face of long odds when the hope of relief diminishes by the hour.

The book contains a remarkable collection of black and white photographs revealing details of the soldiers' kit and weapons and an excellent selection of colored map plates. These visual elements are a highlight of the book.

Newell's lifelong dedication to the study of Arnhem makes this book work. He spent long hours interviewing survivors of the battle, and his practical experience as a soldier infuses the resulting testimonies with an authenticity that would be difficult for a non-veteran to capture as fully.

Airborne to Arnhem belongs on the bookshelf alongside such classics as Ryan's "A Bridge Too Far" and Frost's "A Drop Too Many". Newell has done the British Airborne a tremendous service by preserving the voices of some of its veterans and has gifted subsequent generations with an enduring reminder of their grit and determination.

Fantastic - finished the last of these three volumes today. What a superb body of work the author has undertaken. I'll definitely retain these for future reference as there's no better record of personal accounts than these!

Essential reading to keep these fantastic men's memories alive, and a tribute to the resilience and fortitude of those who fought at and supported the actions around Arnhem and Oosterbeek.
