it should really surprise no one [who knows me] that i’m terribly biased to actually rate this. it was in class with Erica that i first questioned some of the everyday-tools of preservation, including listings and designations.
”Listing is not simply an inventory, nor is it neutral; it is a decision to valorize and invest in some places more than others. This inherently means investing in some publics more than others.” (40, emphasis my own)

this is a book that would’ve done wonders during my thesis. it’s also a book that pretty much encapsulates what Erica always taught in her classes and emphasizes the issues currently shrouding the discipline: preservation policy cannot isolate itself, it needs to work in tandem with other fields and knowledges. through the book, she drills the notion that the field has to look inward and accept change in policy because, whether we want it or not, the change will still happen.

sigh.
