Moonvale Matches #1

Love Letters and Thirst Tonics

Rate this book
Two vampires, a magical town, and a spoonful of spice...

Love sucks. Literally.

For Fiella, life in the magical village of Moonvale used to be peaceful. Her world is turned upside down when a magical attack destroys her trinket shop and everything she has worked for. She is devastated, but finds solace in her new friendship with an anonymous penpal, whose letters ease her troubled mind.

Redd has fled his home in Sunhaven as a last-ditch effort to get a fresh start and escape the bad luck that had been plaguing him. He finds himself in Moonvale, where all the annoyingly friendly local folk seem to need his help. His outlook changes when he lays eyes on a lovely fellow vampire, whose blue hair and fiery temperament ensnare his thoughts.

Limits are tested and bonds are forged when Fiella is forced to accept Redd’s help to rebuild her shop. With the help of friends, magical potions, the local cats, and a few goblets of cider, Fiella and Redd team up to restore what was lost. As the two vampires battle their thirst together through late nights and endless bickering, they might even learn to appreciate each other.

Love Letters and Thirst Tonics is the first book in a series of interconnected standalone fantasy romance novels that take place in a cozy, small town where folk of all species reside. Grab a warm cup of tea and dive into this world of magic, mayhem, critters, and lots and lots of lavender blueberry cider.

Absolute PERFECTION. I wish I could wipe my memory and reread it again for the first time. I also wish that I could live inside of this book!

It’s a cozy fantasy that gives you the same kind of vibe of Legends and Lattes, but with VAMPIRES 😍 and with some spicy scenes.

Reading it feels like a warm hug.

It’s a romance set in an adorable small, magical town, where the main characters are both vampires and the FMC’s best friend is a witch! It’s so lovely!

The basic plot summary is that our FMC, Fiella has a disaster strike at her business, so she needs assistance from Redd to help her rebuild her shop. The both of them don’t like each other at all, and can barely tolerate each other during this project.

They also both start writing to anonymous pen pals through a magical mailbox, and they have no idea their pen pal is the one person they dislike the most. So it’s a “You’ve Got Mail” kind of story.

I fell in love with everything about this book: the characters, the humor, the atmosphere, the writing, the town, and the plot.

I smiled like an idiot the entire time I read it and also giggled a lot too.

This book is going to be one of my “Roman Empires” now. I can already tell.

Love Letters and Thirst Tonics is a precious blend of cozy fantasy and romance 🤍 I was immediately drawn into its world, which is perfect for those who enjoy low-stakes fantasy with a cast of endearing side characters, charming banter, and a captivating main couple 🤍🤍

This book is like a delightful late summer evening, complete with laughter, banter, a glass of cold cider, a good book, and soft music in the background 🍷

It's a heartwarming story that will fill your heart with joy, make you giggle, and savor every page, leaving you with a warm and fuzzy feeling 🤍

The love story between Fiella, the determined trinket shop owner, and Redd, the initially grumpy vampire new in town, is a rollercoaster of emotions. Their journey, filled with witty remarks, is a joy to witness and will leave you rooting for their happiness 🤍🤍

Love Letters and Thirst Tonics is more than just a palate cleanser; it's a book that will keep you hooked from start to finish. The sweet details in this cozy vampire romance make it a truly delightful read. I'm eagerly anticipating Hailey's future books and am grateful for the opportunity to be her ARC reader ✨✨

♡ 3.5 to be exact.

It was alright! I had a fun time reading Love Letters and Thirst Tonics, it's a cute cozy fantasy romance about two vampires who end up disliking each other when they first meet, but later find themselves exchanging anonymous letters while also building up a relationship in real life.

Maybe why I'm rating it a bit lower (for me) is because sometimes the decisions after certain scenes were kinda eh lmao. I found some scenes and the overall ending a bit cringe IM SORRY. I still enjoyed the book and the first part of the book I feel it was A++ like I really liked the way it was going. But I wanted more angsty goodness with the letters and more letters in general maybe? The dislike to love trope came and went too fast idk.

I loved when Redd left and he didn't tell Fiella like yes!!! ANGSTTT I was expecting him to return and find her super mad and sad and have this big scene about it but omg it didn't happen like that *sobs* She was a lil mad and then forgave him so easily and were happy and together after. You know that I love low-on-angst romances but I truly feel like certain scenes or moments do need to have the angst or grovelling scenes in order for me to believe it.

Overall, I do recommend this book if you're looking for a cozy, quick read with vampires, witches, and all kinds of creatures living in one small town where lots of stuff happen. It has anonymous penpals, yummy food, chaotic hexes and so much more.

This was such a sweet, cozy fantasy romcom!

This book follows Fiella and Redd, two vampires who kind of don't like each other from the get-go. Fiella owns a trinket shop in Moonvale. Redd is from Sunhaven as is visiting Moonvale while picking up jobs assigned by the Mayor.

Disaster has struck Fiella's shop and Redd is assigned by the Mayor to help fix up the place. At the same time, both Fiella and Redd are beckoned (separately) by a magical mailbox enticing them to write letters. So they do! Fiella writes a letter to some mysterious person/entity who responds. Little do they know - they are actually writing to each other!

It is such a cute fluffy romance - that's coming from someone who typically doesn't enjoy romcoms. So what sets this apart from other romcoms I've read? 1) Hailey's writing is not repetitive in ways I've found others to be 2) the characters don't make me want to pull my teeth out due to their decisions 3) these characters act their age, so when we do get to spicier scenes, it does not feel out of place or cringey.

What you can find in this book:
✍️ Penpals
👥 Forced proximity (snowed in!)
😏 Grumpy x Sassy
🧛‍♀️ Magical folk/creatures
🏘️ Small town
🧢 Redd = Luke Danes in vampire form

✨Love Letters & Thirst Tonics✨

Oh my goodness, I had such a good time with this cozy cottage core Romantasy. LLATT is a silly and witty read full of magical creatures and swoony romance.

We follow 2 POVs: Fiella, a 25 year old vampire who owns a trinket shop and loves cider and pastries, and Redd, our dashing vampire carpenter who is on the run from a streak of bad luck. When things in town go haywire, Redd is commissioned to help put the town back together and his biggest challenge becomes the sassy, goofy, and beguiling young vampire with the destroyed trinket shop.

LLATT was exactly what I needed to read. It is a standalone debut in a planned interconnected series full of fun, magical creatures and interesting takes on food and drinks. It reminded me of Halloweentown meets Gilmore girls and Jess from The New Girl is Fiella. It is low stakes, quirky, sweet, and spicy all wrapped up into a deliciously magical treat.

Tropes you may find in LLATT are “good girl”, grumpy x sunshine, forced proximity, magical letters, pen pals, bad luck mystery, laugh out loud banter, creative world building, well shaped characters, mates, snowed in, slow burn, moderate language, spice 2.5/5.

I’m so thankful for this gifted arc from Hailey. This is definitely a read I’ll come back to when my heart needs a good HEA and some tender love. It releases May 31!! Go get it!

One, thank you so much for giving me an ARC of your book Hailey, I’m so grateful.

Two, I think this might be my new favorite book ever. I can’t believe this is your debut.

It’s warm, it’s cozy, and the slow burn hits just right. It’s truly such a perfect book, it feels like a warm hug. It made me laugh, it made me smile, it made me swoon and the steamy bits had me STEAMING.

I loved Fiella, she was so sassy and I found her incredibly relatable. Redd is so Luke Danes coded, god, he needed a backwards baseball cap. I love a grumpy man turned into a complete mush for the one he falls for her.

I can’t wait to read more from this author, even if it’s not this world.

HAILEY HAS BECOME MY NEW AUTO BUY AUTHOR

I’ve been anticipating this book from the moment Hailey announced she was starting writing a book on TikTok! It did NOT let down.

This book was everything I love in a cozy fantasy. We had vampires, a cute little town, witches, magic and ALL THE CATS! 🐈‍⬛🐈

I loved the aspect of the magic mailboxes finding you a companion to write to. That was the most charming little element of this book!

And of course I’m obsessed with Redd and Fiella. Redd was such a grump at first but really turned into the biggest sweetheart.

This book was amazing🖤 can’t wait for Kizzi’s story next!

Okay wait because I LOVED this book! This was the epitome of a cozy read, and I literally had a smile on my face pretty much the entire time.

So I was immediately sold at vampires. Our FMC being a spunky, sassy queen & our MMC being a tall, burly, grumpy sweetheart. AND things got a little spicy🤭 a little 🩸sucking moment always does it for me

The storyline was so cute and easy to follow. I loved how minimal but detailed the world building was
(a one way ticket to Moonvale pleaseeee)

I really enjoyed the writing style and all of the characters.

This book is the perfect pallet cleanser!! It was adorable & I’m so happy I got the ARC🖤

This was such a sweet and romantic cozy fantasy read. There's magical attacks, mystery penpals, and blossoming romances. What's not to love?

I immediately fell in love with the vampire fmc Fiella and her fiesty personality. Redd, our mmc, is a big bulry vampire who is unquestionably a big romantic at heart.

The romance in this book is so well written. I loved how it blossomed. The letters.. chefs kiss. I love annonymous pen pals. A beautiful focus in this book. I enjoyed investigating the mystery of the magical attacks. The town of Moonvale sounds amazing. I'd love to be able to go to Ginger's and eat some of that delicious stew with a lavender cider.

This is a perfect, cozy fantasy for me.

Thank you so much to Hailey for sending me an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this, and I cannot wait to read more.

Thank you to Hailey for sending me an ARC of this book to experience her story early.

I will start off to say that I wanted to love this book so badly, the actual plot and the idea of the story had me so intrigued and excited but I feel like the actual book fell flat for me.

To start off, I feel like I was almost overwhelmed with the writing style and the descriptions that were used to describe characters. There was a lot of character descriptions that left me with no visual picture of what they looked like, and I had a hard time following along with new characters BECAUSE I couldn’t create a good picture of them.

Second, I can’t say I loved Fiellas character. She was always angry about something or someone and her whole thing with Redd just bothered me. She was so dramatic all the time and was just way over the top. She just always called him an asshole or was mad about something he said or did, when 99% of the time Redd was totally cool and was doing her a favour by helping with the shop.

I think all in all, this book had a lot of potential to be something good and maybe could be a good intro into a fantasy romance realm for new readers, I just think it fell short on character and world development for me which kinda left me dragging it on to finish it. I think I would definitely give Hailey another chance with future books, this one just missed the mark for me.

This was quite literally one of the cutest, coziest and most fun adventures!

Hailey truly did so well with this debut novel. It has it all, and it was so done great!

+ Vampires
+ Magical mishaps
+ Best friends
+ Who dunnn it?!
+ Magic
+ Small town
+ He falls first
+ Mystery penpals

The plot within this cute little cozy fantasy was so fun and intriguing. I couldn’t wait to figure it all out and piece together the little mystery. The characters, small town and mysterious cats found a way into my heart so easily. I found myself smiling & blushing right along with the characters as their friendship and love unfolded.

I cannot wait for the next book!

Was super lucky to get an ARC of this story.
What a cute, cozy, adorable little book.
A nice slow burn with just enough sexual tension before the spice that it doesn’t feel overwhelming or annoying. You don’t get impatient waiting for things to happen already between the characters.
A pleasant amount of world building without crossing that line of overdone.
Not too many characters to have to try and keep track of them all. And enjoyable characters at that
I definitely enjoyed this little vampire romance.
Also enjoyed the minor mocking about vampires with “shimmery skin”.
Very happy with reading this book.

So happy to be chosen as an ARC reader for this book - especially as it’s the 1st time I’ve done it. Absolutely loved this book. Super cozy romance with great chemistry between Fi & Redd. Was sad to come to the end of the book. It was an easy read and got sucked into the story very quickly.

Also would love to find out more on the mystery of the Old Gods and the cats.

Would defo read again

Take a pastry and a cup of tea! You are going to dive into the coziest and cutest book of 2024!

Our female main character is a vampire and one day bad luck drops on her head and everything in her life goes wrong! Is it connected with some curse or bad luck or probably this irritating (and annoyingly attractive) new vampire, who appeared out of nowhere? And here where our story start!

This book is absolutely deliciously written! I’m absolutely in love with this book and surprised that it is DEBUT novel!!! Absolutely 5⭐️

Okay, so I usually reserve 5 star ratings for really intense, emotionally destroying books, but I couldn’t deny myself of this one ✋ this is my new cozy hyper-fixation!

When I saw Hailey marketing this book as Gilmore Girls meets fantasy, I was skeptical but definitely intrigued. Y’alllll, she didn’t not disappoint 👏👏👏 if the show Gilmore girls had a baby with a fantasy book, this would be it! Gilmore girls is my ultimate comfort show and I’m ecstatic to have a new comfort book!

I love this cozy little world Hailey built! It’s a short novel, but she still managed to paint the perfect picture of this world she created 🫶 The characters are so lovable and quirky (especially kizzi I loved her!). This book is easy to digest and even easier to binge! Fr I read it in less than 24 hours 🤭

Fiella, our fmc, is a quirky trinket shop owner in a cute little town, moonvale. She’s so fun and obnoxious and I love her! She goes through some difficult challenges in this book and struggles to pick herself up at times, but is still so determined! I also totally agree that lavender is a top tier flavor 😍

“I liked to think of myself as a badass, independent woman who didn't need anyone, but gods. What's a vampire gotta do to find someone to share a lavender blueberry cider and a few kisses with?”

And then we have our mmc, redd, who is definitely giving Luke vibes! He’s a grumpy handyman who finds himself working on odd jobs in moonvale. I loved how much of a sweetie he was behind his grumpy exterior! I thought it was so cute how much he grew to love Moonvale 😭

The romance was so good! Redd is assigned to help fix up Fiella’s shop, so they’re forced to work together for weeks. There was plenty of tension while they tried to deny their feelings, until they ultimately couldn’t stay away from each other. There was plenty of banter, spice, and sweet moments between the two of them! And the biting scene? Phew 😮‍💨

I’m already planning on rereading this and will likely get myself a shelf trophy 🫶

I wanted an arc of this book as soon as I saw the cover, I mean, how cute is it?! Thank you so much to the author for a digital arc!

This book made my heart swell 🥹
I’m loving these paranormal romcom style books! This was such a cozy read. The FMC (Fiella) and love interest truly give Lorelei and Luke vibes as advertised by the author ✨ Fiella and her bestie even have a banter reminiscent of Lorelei and Rory 🫶🏼 The magical town of Moonvale where this story takes place gives me Stars Hollow small town vibes where everyone knows each other. Basically if you like PNR and Gilmore Girls (with a bit of You’ve Got Mail) you should give this one a go!

I really enjoyed this story, the quirky characters and the magical town of Moonvale. This was a really fun, cozy read and it’s especially good if you are like me and enjoy a little fluff in between all the angst you usually read 😅

Read this if you like:

✨Cozy Fantasy
✨Small Town
✨Vampires (and other magical beings)
✨Forced Proximity (snow in!)
✨Penpals

I thought this was a great debut novel by Hailey Blackwood and I look forward to reading what other stories she releases!

The only reason I didn’t give this one five stars is because I felt like it could have been fleshed out a bit more. It’s under 300 pages so there’s definitely room for a little more world building or more detail during character interactions. Some of the scenes felt quite short which made the build up between the love interests fall a little flat.

4⭐️/2.5🌶

First of all, this cover is just perfect! I was pleasantly surprised by this cozy fantasy romance. The entire book was such a good time! Fiella, is the owner of a trinket shop in Moonvale that has been destroyed by a mysterious magical attack and Redd is the new grumpy neighbor that moved to town.

The mayor hires handyman Redd to help Fiella and other members of the community fix their shops and Fiella and Redd must work together.

The characters are loveable (Kizzi the chaotic best friend, the townsfolk and of course, Sookie the local cat) There is also a little bit of a mystery to uncover and I kept trying to figure it out. I did wish we got more of the letters. It kind of fell off towards the 70% mark and I kept waiting for more.

Tropes:

💜Banter
💜Magical pen pals
💜Vampire and magical folk
💜Small town
💜Grumpy/ sassy
💜Forced proximity (snowed in)
💜Dual pov

Favorite Quotes

“Don’t worry, little vampire, I would never leave you aching. Be a good girl and be patient.”

"I was a predator, and she was my prey. I was going to catch my sweet vampire and make her mine."

“All I can think about is you. Your mouth. Your skin. The way you smell. You consume me,” Redd murmured into my ear. “Gods woman, you are everything.”

This is a shorter read and the first in a series of interconnected standalones. Overall this is a great debut novel for Hailey and I will be reading the next book 😊

Cosy fantasy is becoming an increasingly popular sub-genre and I totally get it. These stories usually contain low-risk, character-driven plots, and you get the entertainment factor as well as the immersive world pull all in one. Basically it’s the perfect set up for a “curl up in front of the fire with your fav drink” situation.

Sounds good, right? Wellllll, I got the perfect rec for y’all. Hailey Blackwood’s debut novel Love Letters and Thirst Tonics combines small town Gilmore Girls vibes with all the best fantasy elements to make a tale that will give you all the warm and fuzzies as well as have you rolling on the floor laughing.

Honestly, this book just made me so genuinely happy. It was VERY entertaining and just all around enjoyable. It’s a quick read, very fast paced and filled with the best characters and many sweet and quirky moments. Also, this baby is a romance, and such a sweet romance it is. But don’t let that fool you because we do get a nice little dose of spice there at the end. All I will say is, penpals. That trope always gets me. It’s just so freaking cute and easily has me hooked.

A small town romance combined with a mystery, as well as many great fantastical elements woven in, what more could you ask for? Great banter, unique world building, slow burn, grumpy/sunshine vibes, there’s even a angsty “snowed in” moment that will have you craving more. So yes, if you’re looking for a low stakes, quirky, fast paced read, I really really recommend checking this book out ✌🏻

Love Letters & Thirst Tonics is the perfect cozy fantasy! Vampires, witches, magic, and magical letters. ✉️

Blackwood used some of Kizzi's magic, because this book put me under a spell. I loved it so much! The setting is absolutely amazing, I want to move to Moonvale and open my own trinket shop. The characters are loveable, and we get a strong sense of found family. 🥰
This is my first cozy fantasy about vampires, and I must say Redd and Fiella are perfect. 👌 Just look at their faces on the cover! The fangs that peek out, play an important role in the story - que some spicy scenes.

We have pen pals and magical mail boxes, lavender blueberry ciders, and thirst tonics that make hair blue. There are mischievous sprites and forced proximity. Reading this book is like sipping on the chocaliest hot chocolate - it hits all the right spots. 😌
I need more of this world that Blackwood created. This book is officially my favorite cozy fantasy, and readers of Legends & Lattes will love this book.

Many thanks for the author for the gifted eARC in exchange for an honest review.

If you’re looking for a cozy, spicy fantasy. Then grab a glass of cider, a cozy blanket and cuddle up to this book.

Fiella owns a trinket shop that has suddenly experienced a massive disaster. Oh and she is vampire, whose best friend is a witch. A witch who makes thirst tonics so she doesn’t have to drink blood straight from the source. Handy, right? Well at least it would be, but lately there’s been some interesting side effects. Like the fact the tonics currently have Fi rocking blue hair.

Well while in the midst of the disaster she is facing a handsome stranger strolls into town. Also a vampire (eyebrow waggle) after a rough start she grudgingly accepts his help with rebuilding.

Oh and the best part magic mailboxes and secret pen pals.

I have been excited for this since Hailey started posting that she was writing it!

This really matched the vibes she was going for. It’s a cute cozy fantasy romance with vampires. I do love that the vampire scenes really felt like vampire scenes.

Redd was so grumpy and hardworking. We slowly start to see him opening up to the town but also to Fiella. Fiella was a grumpy sunshine mix i find- she had her bulldog moments where she will defend everything but she was also so sweet and passionate with the ones and things she loved. Fiella and Redd blended really well together. The spicy scenes of them were honestly great 😮‍💨🤭😉

There’s only 2 things i would change. I think the love letters needed more romance in them, they were really sweet but felt more like a friend writing to a friend. And then they kinda stopped. I wish that was a bit bigger. The other thing was the resolution to our big conflict of what’s happening to the town- i wish there was a bit of foreshadowing because i felt like it just came out of nowhere.

Thank you to Hailey for sending me an ARC. Congrats on your debut 🫶🏻

Thank you Hailey for letting me be an ARC reader for you!

I love me a good vampire book, the blood, guts, and gore. This is not that! Honestly tho, it made me so happy to read! Small town vibes, banter that is adorable as all get outs, but not a G rated read! This is for 18+ readers for sure! I felt like this is what the world would be like if vampires and the rest of the paranormal world were real and 'normal' people! A world I could happily live in! :D

There is a perfect amount of spice and everything nice in it. Great love story! The MFC & MMC are both headstrong and witty! The secondary characters in the book help the story go along beautifully. The plot is strong, but not overpowering and Hailey's writting mixes it all in perfectly!

"Don't worry, little vampire, I would never leave you aching. Be a good girl and be patient."
"You have captured me-mind, body, and soul."
"Let them hear you scream while I make you mine."

I really hope the next book is about Kizzi, but it would be awesome to read about Tandor. He seems to have a deep side to himself that I would love to explore!
