Bookstore owner Phoebe Winchester is putting on her first major author event when a body is discovered and the plot goes off the rails in this cozy mystery, perfect for fans of Cleo Coyle and Jenn McKinlay.
Amateur witch Phoebe Winchester is excited to host her first big author event at the Earl's Study, her book and tea store. The author, Sebastian Marlow, is a famous birder excited to put Raven Creek on the map for his rediscovery of a presumed-extinct bird. When Sebastian is found dead before his planned bird hike, where he expected to prove the existence of the bird to fellow birding enthusiasts, it's obvious someone wanted him to be extinct, too.
Sebastian had a few unfriendly encounters with his staff-including his recently fired manager, who was seen arguing with him at the author event. Phoebe is determined to figure out who killed Sebastian, worried that it will negatively affect her store's image that her biggest guest author got killed. With the clock ticking, she enlists the help of Rich Lofting, the handsome local private investigator, to help her look into the murder.
It's not long before another victim is pecked off and someone close to Phoebe is the suspect. She'll have to work quickly to uncover the killer and figure out who's up to fowl play in the third charming book in this warm and witchy series.
Gretchen Rue lives in the Canadian prairies, which affords her ample time to read during six months of winter. She plays cat mom to four mostly indifferent fur children, and plant mom to roughly 100 very demanding flora. When she isn’t sipping tea and working on her next novel, she enjoys swimming, hiking, and watching baseball.
I loved the continuation of Phoebe story, I’m hoping that there’s going to be a few more books. This is such a cosy, witchy read. It is the third book in the series and I highly recommend everyone to go read the first two books before reading this one!
I loved how in this book we’re actually focusing more on Phoebe magic. It showed Phoebe slowing becoming aware of how to control her magic and how to use it. I do hope that in the next books she’s fully aware and it’s practicing more magic.
The slowburn it’s everything I didn’t know I needed. I love how Phoebe and Rich are taking everything slow.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Aria & Aries for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I would go as far as to say this is my favourite in the series so far! 🥹
I’ve fully embraced the fact that the romance is a VERY slow burn, but I’m starting to enjoy Phoebe & Rich’s friendship for what it is now. The wholesome descriptions of the town and Phoebe’s food & drink creations always make me smile, and the cosy mystery element in this one was a lot of fun.
Grab your favorite cup of tea and settle down in your favorite chair for this charming tale.
Welcome to the enchanting world of Earl's Study, where bookstore owner and amateur witch Phoebe Winchester is buzzing with excitement for her first major author event. Her cozy book and tea store is set to host the famous birder Sebastian Marlow, who’s about to unveil the rediscovery of a supposedly extinct bird. But the event takes a dark twist when Sebastian is found dead, making it clear that someone wanted him permanently out of the picture.
Phoebe joins forces with the handsome local private investigator, Rich Lofting. Together, they unravel a web of suspects, from Sebastian’s disgruntled former manager to other quirky characters who had their feathers ruffled by the late author. Just when things couldn't get more complicated, another victim falls prey, and someone close to Phoebe becomes a suspect!
Gretchen Rue weaves an enchanting tale in Playing with Magic, balancing witchy charm, humor, and suspense with ease. This cozy, magical story, is both light and captivating with hints of romance. Phoebe, with her determination, wit, and magical touch, is a protagonist who quickly wins your heart. Every page of this book is a joy. If you’re seeking a cozy mystery with a magical twist, Playing with Magic is a must-read.
I loved every moment of this charming tale and can’t wait for more adventures with Phoebe Winchester and Bob the cat!
Thank you to The Publisher Aria & Aries | Aria ,The Author Gretchen Rue & NetGalley for an advanced reader copy (ARC)
I loved the first book and the vibes are just perfection. Cosy, magical, witches and a sprinkle of romance. It’s light, addicting and super addicting. Did I mention addicting? I could read huge chunks of the book at once and still be left wanting more.
Immediately, it had the first page hook effect and I’ve already grown to love the characters (and of course Bob the cat who warrants his own special mention) and now I love them even more.
I also loved the murder mystery element: a famous nature writer and bird lover who attends Phoebe’s book shop to promote his latest read. But much like some of his beloved birds, someone was bent on seeing him extinct too… but is that the full story? There’s more than meets the eye… oooer. If that’s not enough to hook I don’t know what will!
Phoebe is absolutely fab and a cosy murder mystery fantasy was exactly what I needed. If you’re after a book to immerse yourself in and disappear from the world for a bit, look no further. It’s like a warm blanket hug of a book!
Thank you to the author and publisher for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.
So. I didn't know it was the THIRD BOOK IN THE SERIES when I started to read it. Admittedly, I didn't read the whole description, but Goodreads didn't tell me that either. And then I saw some hints about Rich, a guy she was supposedly dating but not really, and some allusions to what happened previously and I was 20% in but decided to look it up. And wouldn't you know, there are more books about Phoebe.
I just wish Goodreads included this bit of information before I started reading this book lmao.
So yes, I had to read "Something Wicked" and "Spell Bound" first. Ugh. Okay. Onto this book!
After reading the previous two books, I actually appreciate the characters more.
It was fun to see Phoebe being invited to be a part of investigation since everyone knew she would just try to solve it on her own. And her partnering with Rich was amazing because it gave them more opportunity to spend time together. But I wish it was ore focused on romance, you know? The plot was all and good but I was hoping for more Rich/Phoebe content. At least their first official date. And we didn't get it.
But they FINALLY kissed??? And it was amazing. Too bad nothing else happened haha.
Overall, the book is well written but the plot of the murder mystery was confusing and over the top. And I think the author forgot a few things from her previous books - for example, Rich already knew that Phoebe was a witch, because he told her that Eudora asked him to keep an eye on her. But in this book Phoebe suddenly didn't know about that? And was shosked when she found out? She already learned about it in the previous book! A little consistency, please.
Also, there are some stylistic choices I would have done differently. For example text messages I would have preferred them to be in cursive, or even in quotation marks to differentiate them from the narration. And put them in separate paragraphs. There's nothing like this here, which makes it hard for the reader to figure out that they're part of the dialogue.
But the book was good although I wa disappointed in the lack of romance. And the fact that NetGalley didn't advertise this book as the third one in the series. It can't really be read as a standalone imo, and the marketing should have reflected it.

"Playing with Magic" is a wonderful read that had me gripped from the very first page. This book perfectly blends mystery and romance, all set in a charming small-town setting that adds an extra layer of coziness to the story.
One of the highlights for me was the protagonist, Phoebe Winchester. She is an incredibly well-crafted character, brimming with personality and charm. I found myself instantly loving her, thanks to her determination and relatable nature. Phoebe's journey, as she navigates the twists and turns of the mystery while also handling her personal life and budding romance, is engaging and heartwarming.
The mystery element is compelling and keeps you guessing, while the romantic subplot adds a delightful touch of warmth and connection. The small-town setting is vividly described, making you feel as though you are right there alongside Phoebe, experiencing the quaint charm and unique quirks of the community.
Overall, "Playing with Magic" is a captivating read that balances intrigue and romance beautifully, with a protagonist you'll adore and a setting you'll wish you could visit. It's a book that will keep you hooked until the very last page.
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Aria & Aries, and the author, Gretchen Rue, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review.
Thank you @sierradeanauthor and @headofzeus for giving me an opportunity to read this book.
It is my honest opinion, pictures were found on Pintrest - wanted to show you how I saw this cosy mystery with a dash of romance.
My rating: 4⭐️
Read if you like: 🐈Cosy mysteries, 🐈Witchy vibes, 🐈Bookshops in books, 🐈A dash of romance, 🐈Orange cats.
It is a third book in the series but it can be read as a standalone. However, I recommend the whole series with whole my heart. This season is great to read them all. It was so good to come back to Raven Creek and read about Phoebe and her friends. The story is a wonderful balance of witchy charm, cosy mystery and a bit of romance. So grab a cuppa if your favourite tea, cosy, fluffy blanket and read adventures of Phoebe and Bob the

Przeczytaj, jeśli lubisz: 🐈Lekkie kryminały z delikatym wątkiem romantycznym, 🐈Klimat czarów i czarownic, 🐈Księgarnie w książkach, 🐈Koty jako bohaterowie w książkach.
To trzecia książka z serii, ale spokojnie może być czytana jako jednotomówka, choć szczerze polecam wcześniejsze książki. Cudownie było wrócić do Raven Creek i towarzyszyć Phoebe w jej kolejnych przygodach. Ta książka to idealne połączenie lekkiego kryminału, magicznego uroku i szczypty romansu. Idealna na jesienne wieczory pod kocykiem i kubkiem ulubionej herbaty w ręku.
Pull up a chair and have a cuppa at the Earl's Study whilst we attempt to unravel the latest mystery facing Phoebe and Co.
A bookish event with a famous birder should be a feather in Phoebe's cap but after the event Sebastian is found murdered! There seems to be some confusion over who the intended victim was and there also seems to be a skeevy lawyer attempting to buy up the town. But are the two things related?
I'm super invested in the gentle romance between Phoebe and Rich. They've both been burned in the love department and they're a bit wary of crashing their renewed friendship but I'm rooting for them. There also may be love in the air for the lovely, gentle giant Leo.
There is much more exploration of Phoebe's new found magical talents this time around and we also learn that magic is possibly the worst kept secret in town! There are a few red herrings, misdirects and twists and I felt completely satisfied when the baddie got their comeuppance. I won't give too much away but I really did not see that last twist coming!
I'm not really a cat fun but I did love seeing Bob return with some new friends too!
Name: Playing with Magic - Gretchen Rue Published: 12th September Rating: 3/5
I was going into this book thinking it was a witchy romance but instead got introduced to a cozy murder mystery.
This book had everything for a cozy autumn read. Small town, Cold weather, tea making, cats and a murder mystery. What more could u want for a cozy read this season.
When starting this book I thought it was quite slow but I kept reading on and I’m so glad I did because,I did not want to put this book down. I wanted to read and read till I found out how it ended and it really didn’t disappoint.
I didn’t realise that this book was a part of a series until half way through. It was still pretty easy to follow but I wish I read the first 2 before starting this one and I recommend that you start with book 1 before reading this one.
Overall, this book is a perfect read for a cozy autumn night and I recommend to people who are looking for a suspenseful read.
*Thank you NetGalley and Aria & Aries for providing me this arc in return for an honest review*
I love these books, and this third book is a great instalment in what I hope will be a growing series!
It’s such a great blend of mystery, cosy, small town vibes and they’re something I look forward to reading again and again.
The plots all link really nicely, so they’re a pleasure to read and you feel like you’re stepping back into a small town when you open up a new one. Even on their own however, the separate mysteries are what keep you engaged, and in truth I’ve not been able to guess any of the outcomes so far!
I really hope there’s at least one more book coming up as I feel like this book had really nice continuation but didn’t wrap up the storyline for a lot of the main characters - if anything it hinted more at future storylines for them.
Book No. 3 in this cosy, witchy murder mystery series!
I once again loved the small town vibes, the way trouble (and murder) seems to find Phoebe, and the full cast of loveable but slighlty odd characters. Phoebe comes in to her own in this book, settling into her new life and relationships.
My only quibble (and if you're not really into the romance side of things it won't matter) was the slowness of the burn, and the neglible words given to the huge developments (in my mind) between our favourite PI, Rick and Phoebe. It felt like we'd been drip fed through two books only for the big moments to happen off page.
However, this was still a lovely read, and a great book for the transition into autumn mode.
3.5 stars I enjoyed this cosy paranormal mystery, but probably not enough to read the rest of the series. I hadn't realised it was a series when I picked it up, but noticed there were references to previous happenings the reader should have been familiar with. Probably better to read them in order!
Lovers of cosy mysteries will find a lot to tick their boxes here: small town, the protagonist runs a book and tea shop, a personable cat. The descriptions of the tea were especially lovely and I liked that there were recipes.
At times the witchy side of things seemed a bit tacked on, rather than an integral part of the character.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the review copy.
Thank you, Head of Zeus and NetGalley, for this ARC.
I've read all 3 books via NetGalley, and I've really enjoyed each one.
Phoebe is again caught up in another murder case, and with her powers on the fritz, she has a lot to sort out.
After organising a top bird expert to come to an author event following the release of his new book, she feels like she can finally put her bookshop an town on the map, but when he ends up murdered, Phoebe feels that pull to help solve the case with her almost boyfriend PI Rich.
I describe this series as murder she wrote meets, midsummer murders with a cosy witchy twist.
Reading this book was such a cosy experience, I loved it. Every scene was painted with such detailed imagery that it made me feel so connected to the story. All the characters in town were so comforting, even Deirdre. Having to put my kindle down at the end of the night in order to sleep was genuinely so devastating, I just wanted to keep reading. It wasn’t that the book was necessarily suspenseful, it was just so inviting and made the world quiet for just a moment… despite the whole 🔪 thing.
Thank you so much to the Aria & Aries team, Gretchen Rue, and NetGalley for the ARC ♥︎

Thank you to Aria & Aries, NetGalley and author Gretchen Rue for this eARC.
So when I requested this book on NetGalley I didn’t realize it was the third book in a series. Which is why I can tell you, you can absolutely read this as a standalone - you may just not want to. I’m probably gonna go pick up book 1 & 2 in autumn.
Playing with Magic is a well written, witchy, cozy-mystery perfect for an afternoon with a cup of your favorite tea and a tasty treat.
I instantly fell in love with the little town, The Earl’s Study and all the characters, especially Bob. The mystery was interesting and I gotta admit I didn’t see the twist coming. And while I really enjoyed the book I think my favorite might have been the little surprise at the end - the recipes for some of the teas and bakes mentioned throughout the book. It was just so cute and fit so well. 4.25 stars
Gretchen Rue writes a number of series but Phobe Winchester is my favourite as I loved the characters, the world building, and Bob the ginger cat. This is a good one, there's plenty of twists and I appreciated how the characters' arc and how they evolved. There's a lot going on, the author deals with the murder of the author but also with the tentative of changing the spirit of the place developing a tourist resort. An excellent and highly entertaining story. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This book was not quite what I was expecting but not in a bad way at all.
This is a cozy, small-town, murder mystery book. There is a sprinkle of romance but it is an incredibly slow burn.
There were so many things I loved about this book, for example, the way cats are spoken about… it made me unreasonably happy! It was so relatable as a cat owner.
I also love that the author showed how Phoebe struggled with controlling her magic, but also showed how she tried to gain control over it.
Thank you NetGalley for granting me access to this e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
Enjoyable light reading of a cozy mystery. I’ve enjoyed reading all three books so far and hope the author continues the adventures of Phoebe Winchester who just seems to not be able to keep herself from getting involved in murders.
Whilst definitely formulaic I don’t feel it spoils the mystery component and still enjoyable light reading.
Would recommend for someone looking for something non taxing.
Such a sweet and cosy book. I did not realise that this was part of a series until a good third in, as it didn’t make quite sense with some detail about the characters. But you can still understand it It did feel like there were a lot of themes going on at once (living in a small town, discovering her witchy powers, food focus, murder mystery, romance). But they all came together in the end and it works! Thanks to net galley and the publisher for my ARC.
I absolutely loved the last book I read of Rue’s (Something Wicked) and I adored this one. It has definitely got me in the mood for autumn and all that it brings. This book was so easy to read, and was perfect to curl up under a blanket and enjoy the book. I loved the characters and the small town setting, I could imagine being there visiting the shops. The murder twists were so entertaining.
I’ve read this whole series so far, and keep awaiting the next book with hope that it will come soon. The Phoebe Winchester witchy-PI services have succeeded again. Thank you Gretchen Rue for another lovely read.
I really love this book series and I hope she does more books, everytime I read them I just want to eat sourdough and drink tea please do more books (ps I’d also love a book on honey)
3.5/5 stars A very cute witchy romance but I hope the best one takes place during fall or winter, because it was missing some of the cozy vibes that I was expecting
