Well I never thought I'd be crying over a scarecrow! This book was surprisingly emotional. Like, really emotional. I was a little unsure of where this story was going to go at first, since, well, live scarecrows and talking birds (and mannequins and wickerpeople, oh my!) were a large part of the story, but it all tied together really nicely. This was a great adventure book with a lot of excitement, despair, and some horror. There's something for everyone. The authors imagination really came through with this one. I would highly recommend giving this a read if you're in the mood for an adventure.

This novel is like no other I’ve ever read. It’s hard to compare it to anything I can think of which made it a blast to read. Erin has lost both parents and her brother to the Many Years Storm. Earth has changed and humans are dying. What is left are strange occurrences such as maniquíes that appear to be alive, scarecrows that can move and talk and even the birds are talking. In this topsy turvy world Erin leaves her little island farm into the endless blue to find her brother along with Scarecrow #12. The adventure is perilous. Erin finds Marshall a human boy who joins her. At times things are bleak but as Pa always said you have to be tested to know what you can actually endure and oh boy Erin and the others are tested. I fell in love with Scarecrow #12 even though her appearance is quite unsettling. This story made me laugh, cry, despair, rejoice and hope for a better future. The Last Scarecrow can be for middle grade up to adult. His story is so bizarre that you want to know what happens next.

I greatly enjoyed this book. It was well written and engaging, and it kept me interested all the way through. The characters were well written, and though not much development took place, it was still a very good read.
The only thing that I didn’t like a whole lot about this book was that there was just a lot of stuff going on. Most of it was vital to the story, as it introduced us to necessary characters, but some I just didn’t understand.
Other than that, this was overall a very good book, and I look forward to read the next as soon as it comes out!!!

It carries the same strange, unsettling magic as Return to Oz—that blend of whimsy and dread, of childlike wonder tucked inside something much darker—and it does it beautifully.
Erin is a compelling, resilient protagonist, holding onto a sliver of hope in a flooded world where almost everything has been taken from her. The scarecrows she built with her father aren’t just background set pieces—they’re haunting, imaginative, and alive in ways that are deeply emotional and deeply creepy. Number Twelve, especially, is an unforgettable character: eerie, endearing, and terrifying all at once.
The horror elements are handled so well—subtle when they need to be, and sharp when they strike. The worldbuilding feels dreamlike and apocalyptic in equal measure, with the rising waters and decaying civilization painting a backdrop that’s both tragic and strangely beautiful.

Beautifully written. From the start I found the characters very charming and lovable, and the setting very intriguing. I spent my time reading this book wanting to know more about this world and the cast inside, what kind of adventures and troubles awaited them. The world building is very clever, too, and all in all this was a very rewarding read. I can definitely see myself rereading this book in the future.
That said, though, I'll admit it did take me some time to really get into this book. I was enjoying the journey, but at first I wasn't entirely sure if or when I'd actually get hooked. I had lingering curiosity about what was going to happen next - along with affection for the characters - keeping me going, but I didn't really feel attached to what I was reading until further along in the story than I would have liked. However, when I did get hooked, I fell so deeply in love with this story, and its poignant ending wrecked my emotions so deliciously.
I look forward to reading the other books in this series when they release, and I've already bought Sadie Madison and the Boy in the Crimson Scarf with full intentions of reading that, as well!

I had no idea what to expect when starting this but 'return to Oz meets nightmare on elm street' is a line used in its own bio and I whole heartedly agree.
Set in a post apocolypic world due to the rise in water levels because of climate change your set on a whimsical adventure in a new world of horrors. Erin survives the many years storm and now hopes to find her brother. Alone she turns to the last of her terrifying scarecrows she herself made.
Wild creatures, insane events and talking birds fill this story with a strange intrigue as you journey through the ever changing world and experience a wild variety of characters. All wrapped up with some heartbreaking conclusions.
Clever, unique, writing and I think it's worthy of your time. The it, I can't truly explain how stylistically unique it felt.

I loved reading this book! It wasn’t what I expected but in a good way!
This was such a fun, easy read full of adventure, beautiful friendships, scarecrows, wicker-men and talking birds! It has a found family trope and there were even some moments where I had a lump in my throat.
If you like teen fantasy’s full of adventure with characters that get you emotional invested, then you should read The Last Scarecrow.

I did enjoy this story. The first part grabbed me & I thought great! Then the pace seemed to slow a little & I found the levels of angst a little high for my tastes. The last part once again picked up & I found myself wanting to see how it finished. Over all a good read.

Absolutely loved it! The plot was so different it just held me in suspense. I don't want to give anything away about this one except - if you like an adventure unlike anything else read it. Loved the characters, their loyalty and interactions with one another was a great part of the story.

I want to start by saying that I truly respect the strangeness and vision of this tale. The end of the world as we know it has occurred and there is only one remaining girl who discovers that birds can talk and humanoid objects, specifically her creepy af scarecrows, have suddenly become sentient? Alright, I'm game to see where this goes. It aimed big and had a lot of action packed into a relatively short novel. It touched on loss and grief, braving the elements, the psychological impacts of being a human soul in a non-human body, teamwork, betrayal, and friendship. I found the timeline to be a tad confusing though, how long was she adventuring and what was she eating? How did she not starve after spending all that energy fighting at every turn? How old is this girl again? The devil is in the details, and while I imagine time and meals are easy to lose track of given the many-years storm, it left me feeling a bit frustrated not being able to pin down things of that nature. The main reason for my 3 stars is for the lack of those critical details- the transitions seemed a bit jarring, and I often had to re-read because I missed something mentioned that furthered the plot without realizing it. The characters were endearing and interesting, but I wanted more, they just came off a little flat to me. Seriously, if this book had dedicated a little bit more to rounding out the context, details, and characters I probably would have loved it- as it stands, I liked it but I needed more pages with more development to give it a higher rating.

This was so so SO good.
The Last Scarecrow follows Erin, a girl who has been left orphaned by a massive rainstorm that has flooded the entire world. One day, a scarecrow she created comes to life, and the two set out together to find Erin’s missing brother.
I had never heard of this author and saw it on the BookSirens website. The cover intrigued me so I decided to give it a go and I am so so SO glad I did. This was FANTASTIC.
The writing:
The book has an almost deceptive writing style. I think it can appeal to a very wide audience because of it. To explain, it reads a lot like a middle grade book. However, the subject matter is pretty dark, and there are dark enough moments where I think it appeals well to an older audience as well.
The world:
I think this was the most unique world building I’ve ever seen. From our titular talking scarecrow, to talking birds, to mannequins come to life, to men made of sticks, this author created some insanely cool and memorable characters. My personal favorite location, besides the farm, was Clifftop. All the birds there were delightfully strange.
The plot:
This book had a nonstop plot that made it almost impossible to put down. We follow our characters to what feels like every corner of the earth in not that many pages, yet it never feels rushed. I think the perfect amount of time was spent in each new location, enough to flesh it out without it getting boring.
Overall, I will be 100% picking up the next book in this series and will definitely be keeping my eyes out for future works by this author.

I bought a copy of this book from Birmingham Book Extravaganza after being spellbound by the cover design and having a great chat with the author. When I got home, I cracked open the book to give it a go - and I don't remember anything else I did with the rest of my day or the next. I finished this book, cover to cover, in under 48 hours and I loved absolutely every second of it!
It's beautiful and tragic but also immensely hopeful and inspiring. Erin is the last girl alive, facing unimaginable new horrors after The Many Years Storm has subsided. Her scarecrow, the delightfully terrifying Twelve, has come to life and the two misfits decide to set out and find what they've lost. This is a story of found family at the end of the world, and doesn't shy from being truly horrifying at times (and I love that it does!) with the perils Erin, Twelve, and their friends and enemies face. I was gripped by several twists and the ending made me cry. But it was beautiful, so beautiful and hopeful as well as sad. I cannot wait for book 2!

This novel was incredibly engaging from the very opening. The story does have quite a bit going on, but it was easy to keep track of things. All in all, it was a captivating horror tale.

This is a clever and exciting adventure fantasy aimed at younger readers but I found it kept my 50+ brain engaged. Borrowing from literature classics is a device I always enjoy when done well and it is done very well here. I'm sure there are some references I missed (possibly due to my age) but this just made me think more which is also a sign of a good read. Great characters, packed with feeling and adventure, brilliantly paced, original….I'd give a 4.5 if possible. It just missed out on 5 stars because there are a few errors which jump out in a book that is so competently written otherwise. Also, given that there's a section at the back for school discussion, I feel it's even more important that correct terminology and grammar are used. I would have loved this in my reading list at school and highly recommend it to readers of all ages with a caveat that it might be quite scary for the youngest who could read at this level.

Another AMAZING book! This was my second book by **Neil J Hart**, the first being *Harper Hale and the Crystal of Shadows* — and once again, I absolutely loved it. *The Last Scarecrow* was magical, creepy, adventurous, and genuinely exciting.
There’s such a strong sense of atmosphere in his writing and his books have become my new favourite form of escapism! I can’t wait to read more.

The Last Scarecrow was a fun, easy read full of adventure, friendships, scarecrows, wicker-men and talking birds! It has a distinct family trope and there were even some moments where I had a lump in my throat. I hadn't expected that. The book carries the same strange, unsettling magic as Return to Oz and blends of whimsy and dread, of childlike wonder tucked inside something darker and it is beautifully done.
Erin is a compelling protagonist, who resiliently holds onto a sliver of hope in a flooded world where so much has gone. The scarecrows she enjoyed building scarecrows with her father and these become haunting and alive in ways that are both emotional and creepy. Number Twelve, especially, is unforgettable. It is eerie, endearing, and terrifying all at once.
However, the horror elements are well handled. They are subtle when they need to be, and sharp for effect as necessary.
Hart's worldbuilding feels dreamlike and apocalyptic in equal measure, with the rising waters and decaying civilization painting a backdrop that’s not just tragic but also strangely beautiful. What really stayed with me is how the story balances darkness with heart. It’s spooky, yes, but also tender. It’s about grief and resilience, fear and trust, and what it means for the characters to hold onto hope when the world has been washed away.
If you love stories that are atmospheric, and eerieHart's book is well worth a try. The Last Scarecrow is haunting in the best possible way and not just for kids.

A BIG thank you to BookSirens and Fragile Publishing for an ARC of this novel. You ever just pick a book by the title and not the synopsis? This was one of those cases for me and I have NEVER done that, I saw the word scarecrow and was like yup! I imagined a horror novel because who doesn't associate scarecrows and associate absolute terror... this novel was way different than that, its macabre sure, but it has so much more to offer than that.
Erin and her mother, father and brother Clyde are swept away in what is now known at the Many Great Years Storm. She is the sole survivor having buried her parents on her homestead called Coldharbour Farm. Clyde, her older brother is still missing. Erin's hobby of Scarecrow making was a regular occurence until the event. She has made twelve scarecrows in all, naming them aptly but number. She awakens one morning to find out that number twelve is alive and talking with a blackbird. I don't want to give too much away because it's just an incredible adventure that all three set out on to find her brother and twelve's other "siblings". There is an island inhabited by birds, an other by mannequins. All humans no more, Erin being the last. This novel is so beautifully written, it kept me enamored and I read it less than twelve hours (love the irony) in reading the end and seeing there will be another one, well I am beyond thrilled over that. There is so much more to know and read involving these wonderfully brought to life characters.

I picked this book up with my 11 year old daughter, convinced by her that she would be ok with the horror. Parts of it are scary - and some a little gruesome - but in my daughter's words, "that's why I loved it so much!" I read it after her, and she kept asking me which part I was up to, eager for me to reach her favourite parts.
The characters are really well developed, there is magic and whimsy, horror, adventure, triumph and devastation. Really, everything you could ever wish for in a middle-grade novel. Absolutely excellent.
I wouldn't have guessed that a story about a living scarecrow could get me so emotionally invested but...well...here we are. It's difficult to say more without giving away spoilers, but if you like classic children's stories with a pinch of horror, look no further!

This dark and beautiful, dystopian story was such an enjoyable read. There are so many things to love: Erin’s fierce heart and macabre sense of creativity, Number Twelve’s strength and love for Erin, the unique and grisly cast of characters, and the grim yet charming world building.
I would recommend this book to readers young and old alike who enjoy a darker fantasy adventure with a lot of heart.

What a pleasant surprise!
I was looking for a book to fill my “Self or Indie Published” space on Fantasy Bingo, and I found this ARC on BookSirens. The Wattpad Winner for Horror award intrigued me, and I can say it is well deserved! The story is captivating from the beginning, I easily sunk hours into reading this. For a horror book, this was surprisingly wholesome! I highly recommend giving this book a read :)

I've been a fan of this book ever since reading it on Wattpad, and it is absolutely deserving of all its accolades! The Last Scarecrow takes you on a mesmerizing and emotional middle grade/YA journey with a unique plot, lovable characters, and imaginative (and perhaps a bit prophetic...) post-apocalyptic setting. Five stars!
