This is a book with a difference; not the usual one of military prowess associated with the SAS. It is a tale of four young soldiers, selected, although not yet trained for service with this elite regiment. The story of their ups and downs is told from the point of view of the young sergeant who led this temporary squad. Although far from obvious at the time, it becomes clear all their missions had a common thread running through them. That thread was heroin, one of the great scourges of our society; it was also a major source of funds for terrorists. Ultimately this book is a tribute to the extraordinary courage of one person, the agent we came to know as ‘RO’. The story covers the various attempts to get her home after she is captured by the war lords of the golden triangle, the source of most of the heroin in the early seventies. Ro captured the admiration, if not the hearts of all the men who came to know her. Even the hardened veterans of the regiment were smitten; some were heard to mutter that this little slip of a girl made them feel like wimps. The information she passed onto the regiment resulted in the removal of several unsavoury characters, some of them from most unlikely positions. Maybe the ‘Boss’ knew more than he let on at the time?!
