A powerful story of courage and believing in yourself. The poetic text is extended through stunning imagery to create a landscape which is dry and unforgiving. In the search for water and life, everyone shuns Stickboy, but he clings to his grandmother's stories, finds comfort in the moonlight and listens to the wind. The wind speaks of many things, but most importantly of the answer that lies within him. It is not easy to find what he and everyone is looking for, but Stickboy courageously persists, and his determination paves way to freedom and life. This story rallies hope in the imaginations of our future generations and empowers readers to believe in their creativity to find solutions in seemingly hopeless situations. The three wordless spreads at the end are truly fascinating!

This is a truly unusual story—and I mean that in a positive way. It opens with a tone that feels almost anthropological or historical, but by the end, it takes a turn toward the dystopian. Even as an adult reader, it raised a number of thought-provoking questions for me, and I suspect it’s a book that benefits from multiple readings to fully appreciate its layers. I think it would be fascinating to share it with a diverse group of my high school students and see the range of interpretations they bring to it.

Intriguing and strange illustrations and text about a future world without water. For me, this book raised many questions and some were left unanswered. However, it's certainly worth a second, third and fourth examination. I would suggest it's a text for older children to ponder and discuss.

Amazing story and illustrations that will grab the attention of primary school and older children, and will intrigue younger children interested in the subjects of climate change and survival.
