Once a year, a draw is held in the capital that requires four mortals from each town be given over to Hell. The mortals are taken to Hell where they will either become an immortal in one of the four courts, or perish in the trials. One mortal is sent to the vampire’s Court of Blood. One goes to the Court of Moon, court of the werewolves. A third is sent to the Court of Spell, with the warlocks and witches. And a final mortal, always a female, goes to the Court of Song, court of the sirens. Twenty-three-year-old Kenna hasn’t had her name called since she became eligible five years ago. She knows in her heart that this year will be the year her world changes. But it isn’t her name that is called out for Collection, it is her best friend Sora’s. Not willing to be without Sora, Kenna quickly follows her through the gateway to Hell before it closes. Not knowing which court Sora was Collected for, Kenna must brave all four as a mortal in order to find her friend. Lucky for her, she gains the help of an alluring stranger who holds more sway in Hell than she could have hoped for. As their fates intertwine and her heart falls fast, Kenna learns navigating a foreign and dangerous land like Hell isn’t easy, and if she isn’t careful, it could cost her everything.
If you lived in a world where Hell was a real place that collected mortals once a year, what would you do when your only friend was taken there? I finished this book in two days. It was an easy read honestly. It contained a unique yet understandable premise, a well balanced host of characters, and the storyline moved at a good pace throughout.
We get to follow Kenna, a twenty-something old girl who is sure she’s going to be picked in The Collection this year. But when the unthinkable happens instead, Kenna seals her fate for the one person she would do anything for. Plunged into a world she has only heard about in stories, we see Kenna adventure through Hell, making a few aquaintences on the way.
Depsite the dark cover, this book left me with a feeling of sweetness. I would call this a pretty “low stakes” type story. I tend to like more tension in the book. Plot twists. But in this story, things seemed to be resolved simply. Danger was talked about, but didn’t often reach the MC. There were plenty of satisfying scenes about delcious food and beautiful clothing, and the quiet moments between action. There were a couple of tense moments, but I want more! Still, there was enough substance in this book that I will be reading the sequel, hoping for a lot more suspensful plotwork!
My favorite part about this book was the prose. Descriptions of scenes made perfect sense to me. I was able to picture things well and it was easy to immerse myself in the moment. Not too flowery but enough to keep me invested.
I’m giving this book 3.5/5 stars. It was well written and most importantly, I enjoyed the story. And that ending has me waiting for the next book!
I want to preface this with that I think it may have been written for a younger audience in mind, which is why I struggled with it!
Initially I loved the entire concept of the book- I thought the idea of the collection and being taken to different courts of hell sounded SO GOOD. Unfortunately it wasn't executed like I expected.
Super fast-paced (to the point it left me feeling that I wasn't getting enough world-building or character development) and I feel like the initial storyline of saving her friend took a backseat to the FMC and MMC's pretty predictable love plot. Some heavy influence from ACOTAR throughout this too.
I'd have loved just generally more depth into the characters and this world!
Kenna is an ordinary girl living in Aevlin and she lives a simple life that brings her joy. She has her horse, Willow, and her best friend who is like a sister, Sora. There is one thing that looms over her and the citizens of Aevlin, The Colletion. Each year four citizens are selected as part of the collection, and Kenna has an inkling it’s her turn. Kenna takes us along for quite the journey, and you’ll never guess the ending.
The plot is well thought out and the writing is good. I did find myself wanting more details, more information on characters, and more world building. There is one small detailed spicy scene and the rest are fade to black / off page. That being said the details the author does give are well thought out and most do play important parts to the story. It is clear the author put a lot of work into their story, they have a unique magic system and plot. It’s a great read and I can’t wait to read the next book! 3.75/5 stars!
The Collection by K. Kirchberger is a wonderful Romantasy about love in Hell. The journey Kenna endures and daunting, but Lucifer makes it that much better with his charisma and wit. The ending, though! I gasped out loud and hope there is a second book in the works. I knew I didn't like Nyx the moment his character was mentioned! Wonderful read for sure!
The Collection details a woman’s journey through the various courts of Hell in search of her best friend while finding love along the way. I enjoyed the overall story concept and the author’s unique vision of Hell. It was very easy reading and while the author’s descriptions painted a picture in my mind, the writing style was simple and story depth superficial. I found myself constantly wanting more depth than was given. I feel like it is a promising start to a series that I hope will continue to grow with the authors writing experience.
If I could give this book half a star I would. Rating 0.5 stars. Half a star for the author's effort... it was a solid attempt at writing a book. SPOILERS AHEAD IN REVIEW!! *************************************************************************
This book was absolutely terrible, and I am so confused on why it has high ratings. I'm wondering if the reviews are all done by friends and family of the author.
The author was definitely inspired by other books, as she refers to clothing as 'fashion from the capital' which is so hunger games. And all the different courts reminds me of ACOTAR, also, it wouldn't be a Romantasy without having an immortal King of Hell to fall in love with, which is, no surprise, her mate. I feel like there wasn't a single original idea in this book.
This is a closed door romance, but there is one 'spicy' scene, which is written so awkwardly, it was painful to read.
Before jumping into points in the book, I just want to comment on the world building. It is garbage. It doesn't feel like a fantasy world at all, even when Kenna goes to Hell to save her friend, Sora. The author describes Hell as a mirror of Kenna's world. Yet, there is no sun in Hell- but there is night and day, with no explanation of how that is possible. And the way weather works and growing food, and trade between the courts, and Hell with the mortal world, is not well thought out, it leaves many questions for the reader, and they all go unanswered, as the author gives no details and doesn't world building. In Hell, you get to see the different courts... which is not really true. You get the very minimum here. The King of Hell takes her on walks through some of the towns, and they stay with the werewolves, but either then that, Kenna stays in the palace and does nothing. She doesn't even go to the Siren Court, but meets outside of it to ask about Sora. The reader doesn't get to see the world of Hell, and the author skips over a lot of world building details, and over all, it's very disappointing. Also, the book advertises trials... there are none. You don't get to see them or even learn what they were. The author skips over it completely! Only to put that when Kenna goes to Hell, the time zone is different and time skipped ahead. Another big disappointment, and false advertising, as the author uses the trials as a keyword in her marketing, and it's in the blurb on the back of the book.
Now for some problems within the actual book:
To start it off, the first chapter is all telling and no showing- which is a huge theme in this book. There isn't even dialogue in the first chapter. The author goes on and on about the main character's horse, because it means so much to her. Only for her to leave it behind and never mention it again. Why go on for two chapters about a horse that plays no part in the story and is never mentioned again? If she really wanted to, the King of Hell could have brought her the horse to live in the palace with her, since the horse meant 'so much to her'. What a waste of time. Was the book even edited? This could have been cut out, it could have saved the word count and the reader's time.
The main character's parents are dead (big surprise in a fantasy book) and they leave her with a ton of money. So she has no skills and has never had to do anything herself in her whole life. Anyways, the Collection takes people every year, but if you live in a bigger town you have a less chance of being called (don't get me started on the populations and how the cities work in the world, because the author gives no world building, and everyone from smaller cities move to the bigger cities to avoid having their name called, but yet the smaller cities are still thriving despite having no people). So Kenna and her best friend, Sora, want to move to a big city to be more safe from having their names called, and they can't yet because Sora can't afford it and has to save up for moving, yet Kenna can afford moving no problem because she's rich... so why wouldn't Kenna help pay for her "best friend"? The whole book, Sora being chosen, Kenna going to Hell, could have been avoided if Kenna wasn't so stingy with her money. It's a plot hole and makes the main character unlikable.
Speaking of Kenna being selfish and not sharing her money, Kenna and Sora go to the market and there is rare fruit to buy. Sora says she can't afford any as she is saving her money to move. But Kenna buys a lot of it, and then it takes her six pages to share it with her friend. And she only gives her one orange and one banana, or soemthing, for Sora and her mother to share. Not sure about any one else, but if I have the money and my best friend couldn't afford food, I would be giving her way more then a single orange and a single banana.
Honestly, this book just doesn't make sense. The author makes things difficult for no reason. Kenna is looking for her best friend, Sora, in the other courts around Hell, which the King of Hell is going to visit and offers to ask the prince of that court if Sora is there or not, but Kenna says no, that she has to hear it herself, and then waits a week before being able to go there to get the information. Such a waste of time because all she does is read books in the library, sleep in, and learn to throw knives for some reason. The knife throwing is a useless talent for this girl since the only time she attempts to use it is fighting a vampire, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't even draw her dagger before the vampire beats her. So what was the point of her training, I think it was literally just to fill space. The King of Hell has a power to transport all over Hell, but stays respectful of the court's boundaries and always transports them far away from where they need to go. The King of Hell also has to wait for appointments to meet with the Court Princes. I'm sorry but if you're the King of Hell, which the author seems to think making him smirk darkly makes him seem dangerous (as she points out multiple times throughout the story), you should be able to see the Princes whenever you want and transport wherever you want, since you're the King. Again, it's such a waste of time and such a filler.
There are times in this book that made me question reading it. Kenna gets invited to dinner with the King of Hell and his friends/advisors, and the whole scene is absolutely pointless. Of course Kenna gets a beautiful brand new dress to wear (the author does a questionable job describing it, using phrases like the back dips to the rear, and the design of the dress was something like vines that run through the Earth- does she mean roots?). Anyways, Kenna goes to the dinner with the others, and just sits there. Some of what the others are saying is mentioned, but nothing important or that gives value to the story. And Kenna doesn't even pay attention to the conversations going on. And then they dismiss her after dinner as they have an important conversation to discuss. End of the dinner scene. It was honestly so pointless and could have been cut, the story would not have lost any value.
The main character comes off as lazy, since all she does is stay up reading to late and wondering around the palace. Something that always bothered me about Kenna was that when she entered Hell she was wearing her mother's dress and necklace, and since she is stuck in Hell forever, she goes on to say how important the dress is to her and how special it is. Yet, that doesn't stop her from trading it in in the next chapter to get a more practical outfit. Yes, that makes sense to get a practical outfit, but what doesn't make sense, is that later the King of Hell is like whatever you want and whatever you need I'll get it for you. But she doesn't ask to get mother's dress back.
The author has a lot to learn since there is a lot of stuff in this book that gives nothing to the story. More then half of this book could be cut, and the reader wouldn't be missing out on anything.
The wording, sentence structure and dialogue is very stiff. The author is terrible for repeating words, creating run on sentences, and using phrases no one would ever use. The dialogue in this book is so bad, it's very grammatically correct (which might not be a bad thing) but it takes so much out of the characters, because they all sound like robots. No one talks that way in real life, so it makes all the characters fall flat. There is absolutely no character development for any character in this book.
The only development in this book is the relationship between Kenna and the King of Hell. Since once they share their feelings with each other, all they do is have sex. Every chance they get, they're doing it. Which brings me to the urgency of this book. There is none. Finding Sora becomes a sub plot. It's like Kenna doesn't care about finding her anymore, she takes her time and lounges around the castle.
A lot of comments talk about the cliff hanger at the end, and how it was so good. I found the cliff hanger so boring. There was no build up for it, no foreshadowing (I don't think the author knows how to foreshadow properly or set things up for a cliff hanger). I honestly couldn't care less about the ending, and have no desire to read the second book. This author needs to grow her writing and develop her world building skills.
Wow comes to my mind!! From the first chapter on I was interested, I didn't find any slow or boring parts of this book it kept my attention. I absolutely loved reading this book. I loved the tension between Luc and Kenna and the fact that even with him being the devil. I honestly cannot wait for a second book. I wish the Collection was a series. I loved all the different courts in this book. I do wish there was more spice, more 🔥 But I did enjoy it completely
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The Collection is an adult romantasy novel about a young woman on a quest to find her friend and rejoin her. The time for the Collection has come and Kenna’s friend’s name gets called. What does that mean? It means that her friend will be sent to one of four courts. Should she pass the trials there she will become an immortal and remain there. If she fails? Well, it won’t be good but either way...Kenna will never see her again. Kenna thought it would be her this year though, and she’s not intending to let her friend be alone in this no matter what. The Collection is an engaging romantic fantasy. Kenna is an interesting character. She’s brave, she’s determined, and much is to be said for her loyalty to her friend. Not many would chance going to a place they fear to rejoin someone they claim to care about. Kenna seems to have good fortune throughout The Collection, well, up to a certain point. She crosses paths with a particular immortal in the story who chooses to assist her with her search. Who this immortal is is quickly revealed, and exactly why they are able to help her as extensively as they do. Hoping for a lot of drama? Well, it will come, but most of the story will focus on Kenna and her day to day. The romance gradually builds, but if you’re hoping for steamy scenes to play out you’re going to be disappointed. This book will end on a cliffhanger that promises more. The question will be does Kenna’s story continue? Or do we get a different viewpoint. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
This is a great debut and a promising start to a new adult fantasy/paranormal romance series! The story and plot was so interesting and kept my attention from the very first page. I loved how strong-willed Kenna is and she is in no way a damsel in distress even though she’s a mortal entering the dangerous lands of hell and paranormal creatures. I also loved Luc, our MMC. He’s dark, mysterious and handsome with a smile that will make you melt. Also, the way he flirts with Kenna will make you swoon! I enjoyed the banter, the tension and the romance between these two. The romance is pretty much closed door unfortunately with some heated kissing moments, but that didn’t take away from me enjoying the book.
I do wish we could’ve seen what the trials were like and hopefully with how the book ended, we’ll get some insight about them in the next book. I also expected and wished that there was more action in this book and I think the book would have benefitted with having Luc’s POV.
Overall though, I really enjoyed this book and I’m so excited to find out what happens next especially after that jaw-dropping cliffhanger! I would recommend this book to all readers who enjoy adult fantasy/paranormal romance and these tropes:
• Loyalty • Found love • Protective MMC • Strong friendships • Hidden identities • Immortals • Mates
Thank you to the author and R&R Book Tours for the ARC! 🥰🫶🏼
Kenna is a mortal who goes on quite the adventure through the depths of hell to rescue her best friend from a fate she later realizes she knows very little about.
Along the way, she meets Luc, who turns out to be the devil himself, and this is where the adventure really takes off!
Kenna has spent her whole life fighting to survive and is determined to do whatever it takes to find her only remaining family. As she and Luc venture through hell, they grow close and sparks ignite. Their interactions are some of the best parts of this story. I love how he does all he can to protect her while simultaneously empowering her along the way. And his Fallen brothers are a welcome addition, especially Tobias!
This book was a quick and easy read. The plot was well paced, though I would love to see some more depth in the later books. The ending, while predictable, left me eager for the next book and answers to the revelations at the end. The planning and the scheming is far from over!
I liked the idea and overall concept of the book, and I think the storyline has potential. The different realms of Hell were interesting, and I would love to learn more about them.
The first half of the book was great, but after that, the plot got quite repetitive and, unfortunately, a bit boring at times. It was also quite easy to guess what was going to happen in the end.
Nice, promising start to a series. I personally would prefer the story itself, the characters, and the world to have a bit more depth. I found the world to be a bit underdeveloped, and the world-building was rushed.
The trials sounded interesting, and I would love to learn more about them. For example, a dual-pov with Kenna and Sora or some other way to see what happens during the trials would be great.
I’m interested to see where the story goes next.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
The Collection by K. Kirchberger @authorkkirchberger - - ✨Rating & Review✨: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Every good book will have you questioning the sanity of at least one character. Kenna is that character for me. Selfless and reckless usually go hand in hand and she has both in spades. I don’t know if I could willingly go to Hell to be with my best friend. (Can I meet y’all down there when I’m good and ready?) but true to her word, she travels through every court in hell in search of her best friend. What she finds instead is what she’s been searching for her whole life. - - 🔖 #Books #BookRecommendation #BlackGirlsReadBooksToo #BlackGirlsRead #Bookstagram #BlackBookstagram #BooksAreAGirlsBestFriend #QueerReadersOfInatagram #ReadersOfInstagram #BookishGirls #BookReviews #rrbooktours #rrbtthecollection #thecollection #adultfantasyromance #fantasyromance #fantasyromancebooks #fantasyreads #fantasybook #romantasy #romanticfantasy #booktour
The collection follows one girls need to find her best friend in the realm of Hell. She will come across all manner of “monsters” from witches to sirens. But along the way she bumps into a male who is to be the most feared by all in the human realm, but is he really what he seems?
Thank you to (the author) for this arc copy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, the banter was there. The characters were swoonworthy and majority were likeable. Which honestly is a shock because a lot of books have at least 2/3 characters I absolutely despise. Not in this book though. I sometimes find it hard to get into fantasy books, however it wasn’t the case with the collection, it picked up speed from the get go and just ran that way throughout.
Now, HOW CAN IT END JUST LIKE THAT??? Like SERIOUSLY?
Kirchberger’s world-building makes you fall in love with this book. The way she reimagines the concept of Hell makes sinning not seem so bad. I loved her imagery. Like Kenna, I was starting to enjoy it there, highlighting beauty in darkness. I also love fantasy romance/ paranormal romance, and Kirchberger did not disappoint me. A slow simmer of a read, she keeps the juices flowing just enough that you have to read one more page.
While her characters were likable, I found them a bit saccharine but likable.
I also was able to predict the ending, but Kirchberger did throw in a wrench that I did not see coming and made me nearly drop my tablet. The book ends on a cliffhanger, but there is nothing on or in the book (trust me, I looked all over) that states this is book 1 of such in such. Will there be another book?! I hope so!
This was a well written fantasy romance. You can easily get swept up and be immersed into the story.
Kenna lives a simple life and is content with doing just that, until the annual event called The Collection. Each year, 4 people are chosen to participate, and this year might just be the year Kenna will be chosen. We follow her journey to save her best friend Sora. And we just might meet a few vampires along the way...the ending has an inconvenient cliffhanger that I am begging for more!

Thank you to the Author and RR Book Tours for allowing me to receive this as an ARC. This review is honest and my own!
The Collection follows Kenna as she journeys to the immortal realm of Hell and navigates its four Courts in search of someone close to her, but along the way she finds herself and much more.
This is one of those stories that gets better as you read with more details unfolding, well articulated character development and world building to match the pace. If you enjoy a good quest with well thought out romance you will want to give this book a read!
An intriguing fantasy! I loved the concept it was unique and exciting. The whole story was a fun adventure that presented Hell and the Devil in a way that wasn’t expected.
I enjoyed the characters. Kenna was a determined character. I admired her loyalty and determination. I also enjoyed how she grew more confident and more into herself throughout the story. Luc was not what I expected. He was definitely swoon-worthy and had cinnamon roll vibes.
The story left off in an unexpected twist and I can’t help but wonder what will happen next.
A couple of tropes to enjoy here are; epic quest, found family, soulmates, vampires, witches, shifters, and more!
My friend lent me this book, she warned me that it wasn't overly amazing, but I thought I would give it a chance, because it sounded amazing! Trials, love them. Different magical courts, I liked ACOTAR, so sure. Fated mates, fantastic. A strong MFC, love it. Unfortunately, this book did disappoint. Trials... the author skipped them and you never learn what they were. Magic courts, yes, but you don't really get to see them or get much out of them, almost no world building. Fated mates, yeah sure, it's there. A strong female main character... well, I wouldn't say she's strong, actually she seems sort of useless since all she does is sit around, read and have sex.
I dove in head first and loved every page of it! The story grabbed me from the beginning and I loved discovering the new world and immortals as Kenna did. And when Luc entered the picture, I was a total goner. He has the perfect blend of deadly danger and soft only for her. His little actions sprinkled throughout had me constantly swooning and rooting for them. It’s not all rainbows and though a couple of my predictions came true, I still enjoyed every moment of how it all played out. I can’t wait for the next book and more of this world!
I loved this book and there had better be a next one!! I got ACOTAR and hunger games vibes from this book. Kenna lives in a village and when her best friend and the only family she has left is chosen she impulsively follows her into Hell. She ends up literally bumping into a stranger who ends up changing her whole world. I really and I mean really enjoyed this book. it’s the type of book that I wish I could forget I read to read it again for the first time!
This was a really incredible closed door adult fantasy romance! I loved the idea behind the collection and the different courts! Can I just say the Luc was by far my favorite character! His character was just utterly charming and I loved the banter between him and Kenna! I found myself smiling at their encounters. I found all of the characters wonderful and well written! I binged this book!
• Loyalty • Found love • Protective MMC • Strong friendships • Hidden identities • Immortals
Very good read - love the world building, its a different take on the realms. did you like Enchantra? Phantasma ?! This is for you! easy to follow and light - I love the main character, her fearlessness and spunk. losing her parents made her hyper focus on her best friend and it all fit the story well. the ending was perfect. my only complaint was the MMC was not what I would expect from him... he was so sweet ! lol cannot WAIT to read more from this author ♡♡
A lot of potential for this series. It started off wonderfully and read like a nice light YA fantasy but was a little predictable in the end. Which isn’t necessarily bad. I wanted more from each court in Hell. I wanted to be immersed in the different courts more thoroughly. And I wanted a bit more danger along the way. Interested to see where the story goes!
This story is different than the usual trials type books. I'm also severely ADD and dnf more than I complete but I was able to read this without reading other books at the same time.
I was selected as an ARC reader and this is my honest review: 2.75 stars (rounding up)
This series has a lot of potential! I was definitely drawn to the premise of the book, especially because the author was clearly influenced by The Hunger Games and ACOTAR.
Overall, it was an easy read, but I did find that some of the storyline and world-building was rushed and underdeveloped. I wish that we got to see the Trials for the Collected, that the FMC experienced more conflict/adventure on her own, and that there was more "showing" rather than telling.
Once the FMC met the MMC (who is strikingly similar to Rhysand), most of the conflict resolved and the plot shifted to a love story rather than a mission to save her friend. It's mostly a closed door romance, but there is an on-page spicy scene that would make this an 18+ book.
The author has a great idea and it was interesting exploring the different Courts of Hell. I look forward to seeing how the story matures.
