A retired firefighter/EMT-paramedic/special rescue
technician: From a young adolescent to a young adult, he pursued many different
hobbies and adventures. He was frequently off to some adventure spelunking,
technical rock climbing, and backpacking. Canoeing and kayaking the white water
rapids of many different classes. He was one for an adventure over the usual
social structures of those times.

As an adult, he renewed his interest in amateur astronomy and
astrophotography, and he finally built a small roll-off roof observatory in the
backyard. He also has pursued an interest in many sciences related to the study
and theory of astronomy.

As an adult, he traveled along many different trades
and vocational paths. He achieved a career in the fire service. Working with a
volunteer service first, then in a career department in a large metropolis in
Indiana. The many realities of life encountered and dealt with in that career
helped to shape his appreciation for the sanctity of life and the frailty of it
as well. He tries to apply some of these lessons in his writing and fictional
worlds.

“Never go to bed mad at the ones you love! Life's cruel
fate could strip them from you tomorrow! Try to leave a legacy behind you of
life and good works. This is the only life you get on this Earth, so use it
wisely! I've helped to bring life into this world and felt the humbling
experience of seeing it leave abruptly!"

The Life and Times of Gunnery Sergeant Jackson Mason:The Quest For Freedom by Mark Jordan

Gunny Mason is a mustang officer who has worked his way up through the ranks. Sergeants are the true leaders of most armies, so Gunny makes a reluctant but highly effective officer. The story centers on an unnecessary war and the corruption that led to its inception. Gunny’s honor impacts the war's results and consequently the ensuing revolt.
Jordan seems to reflect current events and project them into the future; conversely, he looks at historic events and the inception of our nation.
I enjoyed the concepts of honor and trust particularly as they are so rare in today’s political world.
I recommend the book, I wasn’t entranced with Jordon’s writing style but I really enjoyed his message.

The Life and Times of Gunnery Sergeant Jackson Mason: The Quest for Freedom is an epic tale of loyalty, bravery, and the grit of a marine caught in a galaxy-spanning conflict. Following Jackson Mason’s rise through the ranks, the book blends intense action with moments of deep reflection as Mason uncovers secrets that could change everything. I loved how the story kept me on edge while still grounding me in the camaraderie and honor of its characters. It’s a perfect mix of action and sci-fi.

Features:

- An action-packed, military story with a futuristic setting
- Exploration of how conflict/war is used to further the political and/or economic agendas of the powerful
- A capable and charismatic military leader as the main character

Summary:

The Earth Alliance’s war against the Tarkanians has taken everything from Jackson Mason and he has taken plenty of the Tarkanians in return. A sharp and skilled warrior both on land and in the sky, Mason quickly gains a fierce reputation among his enemies and admiration from his allies. But the higher Mason climbs, the more he learns about the true machinations driving a seemingly constant interstellar conflict. In a dangerous, ever changing world, Mason must use all of the tools at his disposal before he loses himself as well.

Thoughts:

If you enjoy military books, I would highly recommend picking this one up. This book is not afraid to go deep into the strategy behind the action unfolding and you get a real sense of camaraderie amongst Mason and those around him. The battles are engaging, fast-paced, and brutal in a way that gives you a good idea of how horrific these conflicts are without being too graphic or gory. Jackson Mason starts off as your typical military hero character, but we see him evolve into something a lot more complicated and unique as his perspective grows. Despite its shorter length, this book had me really invested in its characters and world. That being said, I wish it took the time to flesh these things out a little more.

The only thing bringing down my rating of this book is the writing itself. I am not sure if it is an error in the advanced digital copy I received or intentional, but there is a copious amount of exclamation points. There are so many that it actually took away some of my ability to engage with the characters and setting until I gave myself permission to ignore them. Likewise, there are small but unnecessary repetitions that really stand out in the tense, fast-paced scenes. Though these didn’t ultimately ruin my enjoyment of the book, they also prevented it from reaching its full potential for me.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Mark Jordan for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I was in the mood for some good old-fashioned sci-fi. The kind my dad read in the 80s & 90s. The ones I devoured as a teen. The series with battleships and politics and consequences that I couldn't wait to read the next volume. The kind of action-packed thrills and driven storylines found in video games like Mass Effect.

Recently, I found These Blighted Stars, which really fit that niche for me. When I saw this book pop up, it looked like it would scratch the same itch.

In some ways, it does. It's got that grimy grit and action. The ships and soldiers. But it's somehow missing the soul. The heart that makes me care about the worlds and the characters.

Did I like it enough to read a sequel? Probably. I like giving new authors second chances.

The Quest for Freedom is a gripping and immersive military sci-fi adventure that blends high-stakes action with genuine emotional depth. From the first chapter, I was drawn into the journey of a young Marine whose unwavering sense of duty, service, and honor drives him from the front lines to the highest levels of command. The author’s world-building is rich and detailed, the combat scenes are intense and realistic, and the political intrigue adds a compelling layer of tension. The relationships from trusted comrades to powerful allies feel authentic and meaningful, making his victories and struggles all the more impactful.

This book was introduced to us by Megan E Moore, though she hasn’t finalized the feature yet since she’s waiting for your go-ahead. Just from the summary alone, I can already feel the intensity and heart of this story. Gunnery Sergeant Jackson Mason sounds like the kind of unforgettable character readers will rally behind — a battle-hardened Marine whose loyalty and courage rise above the chaos of war. The mix of interstellar conflict, tactical brilliance, and the human spirit of camaraderie makes this sound like an epic journey I can’t wait to experience. I haven’t read the full novel yet, but I’m genuinely eager to dive into what promises to be a gripping and inspiring saga.

As a doctor, I truly appreciated how The Life and Times of Gunnery Sergeant Jackson Mason captured the emotional and psychological toll of war. The portrayal of trauma, leadership stress, and internal conflict was incredibly human and believable. It’s more than a military sci-fi, it’s a study of resilience under pressure. A gripping, thoughtful read that stayed with me long after I finished.

I really enjoyed the story and the depth of Jackson Mason’s character, but some parts, especially the mid-section, dragged due to overly detailed military descriptions. A bit more editing to streamline those scenes would really help the pacing. Still, a compelling and thoughtful book overall!
