The Imperium does not take it lightly when its slaves revolt. Earth's population has been decimated, and Captain Bill Henderson is fleeing imperial attack dogs with his crew and two million refugees - the last of humanity.
Starship Omega could be the answer to turning the tide and finally ending the Imperium's tyranny. But not in its current form.
The Omega is capable of so much more - but to unlock the enormous ship's true power, Bill must lead those under his command into the heart of empire space.
To do that, they're going to need some help.
Can Omega's crew convince the Imperium's other vassal species to finally start fighting back? Find out in Book 2 of Starship Omega, an engrossing new space opera from bestselling authors Scott Bartlett and Joshua James.
In Eternity’s Battleship, Scott Bartlett and Joshua James deliver a masterclass in modern science fiction—a rich, tightly written epic that combines high-stakes tension with deep emotional intelligence.
This isn’t just a space opera. It’s a story of survival, fractured leadership, and the haunting cost of hope.
The novel opens in the smothering corridors of Omega, an ancient alien vessel that has become humanity’s last sanctuary. Earth is gone, the Imperium rules through terror, and what remains of our species clings to life aboard a Primeval ship no one fully understands. Bartlett and James immerse us immediately in the emotional weight of this reality. Captain Bill Henderson is no generic hero—he’s burdened, uncertain, and palpably human. His leadership, challenged at every turn by unrest, scarcity, and internal politics, drives the story with precision and gravitas.
Bartlett and James’s gift lies in their ability to craft tension on multiple fronts: between characters, within the ship, and across the stars. Each perspective—be it the loyal Corporal Splat, the steely Commander Chakravarti, or the embittered alien prisoner Nonus—adds complexity to the overarching conflict. The dialogue is sharp, authentic, and purposeful. The pacing never slackens. And yet, Bartlett and James find room for moments of quiet reflection, unexpected warmth, and philosophical weight.
What elevates Eternity’s Battleship is its timely resonance. In an era of rising authoritarianism and fractured truths, the novel’s central question—Who do we become when the world ends?—lands with devastating clarity. Bartlett and James never offer easy answers. They offer characters who fumble, clash, and carry their trauma into every decision.
This is science fiction at its best: immersive, character-driven, and unflinching in its moral inquiry. Eternity’s Battleship deserves its place beside genre-defining works like The Expanse and Battlestar Galactica. It’s also a stark reminder that humanity’s greatest battles are rarely fought in space—they’re fought in the decisions we make when everything is on the line.
Eternity is a loooong way to survive but somehow that is exactly what happened with the gigantic ship of a rather ancient long dead alien race. It certainly made a huge difference to the hugely diminished human race trying to escape the alien Ornu race threatening to permanently vanguish the human race when Captain Henderson managed to escape the Ornu with about two million refugees. Except there is not enough food for so many hungry mouths. And insurrection has risen it's ugly head. And the drive of the Omega needs replacement. Eternity's Battleship might prove a death trap. Or would it? Authors Scott Bartlett and Joshua James certain crafted quite the humdinger with this tome called Eternity's Battleship as surprises keeps bobbing up to test the human resilience and ensure that the reader has his own worries how long his finger nails may last to the final paragraphs. Enjoy
We have a battle for earth, then there's attempt to get supplies, but there's another battle. We have a battle to quell an insurrection, and make friends with something that seems like a dung beetle. We go to the beetle's planet. Woops, there's another battle. We've got to make an upgrade that inexplicably must be done in dry dock so we go conquer a dry dock. Battle! We're totally defenseless while getting the upgrade, so the beetles have to defend us in a. . . Wait for it. . . . Battle! As usual, there are numerous questions regarding why something was done a certain way or at all. There were some Easter eggs dropped along the way that indicate there's going to be some rather explosive revelations and big twists and turns in the next book. For instance: Why are there two different persons that appear representing the ship?
Another excellent book in this series. The story builds from the initial phase of painting the picture of what life was like on a massively overcrowded vessel, occupied by the myriad groups of those rescued from Earth, through mutiny and recovery and on to battles galore. The action constantly ramps up with the situations becoming more and more interesting and complex. I was as gripped by the pace and the inventiveness of the story and thoroughly enjoyed how it unfolded, trying to figure out what Omega is and the powers it has, etc., and how the book intriguingly ended with Nonus and Teraphim's link up.
> Captain Bill Henderson and his crew are on the ship Omega. But > besides being just a ship, there is more to Omega and the Onru want to > get their hands on it. And who are the spies on board the ship. They > are carrying the last of humanity on board, but the Slovenians think > they should control the ship. There are just so many things happening > and I love how Scott Bartlett was able to bring the reader through > these and many more experiences that the crew must win or humanity > will fail. I am really looking forward to the next book in this > series. Scott has done a fantastic job.
This is book two in Starship Omega series. This book was a real page turner for me. While the first book in the series was fascinating, it is this second volume that begins and continues the action. The action comes on slowly but ramps up then it plunges ahead with abandon. This is not the victorious end but a beginning with an eye to a great battle to the death. I found this book difficult to put down at times. I recommend this book to all readers especially those that marginally enjoyed the first volume but thought the plot ran a little slow. You will not be disappointed.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Captain of a warship is expected to understand many things, particularly dealing with combat, emergencies, supporting civilians in need, and particularly human nature. The bumbling and fumbling story would make us believe that a Captain moves from one crisis to the next without thought or planning. The XO is responsible for the crew and daily routine, putting in place the Captain's will, yet this XO appears to do little more than muddle along. Not one jot of reality.
For example, the first thing the XO would put in place after taking on the refugees would be security, medical and deck or hold representatives to ensure that feedback is received in a structured way.
Distributing the "politicians" would be a start, but they go missing from the narrative too often.
A search for weapons and contraband would be the security details first steps.
The authors talk about "police" being among the refugees, but then this thread disappears as well.
This is not a space opera, more a space cartoon, with critical interactions and actions missing. Jumping pages and paragraphs appears to be the only way to get to the end, hoping the story improves in the next book.

Another enjoyable, well written book with action, drama, politics, different “classes” of “people”, and not to forget the hostile aliens that want to wipeout humans and other “inferior” races that don’t fully submit to their subjugation. Captain bill has filled the huge starship OMEGA to overflowing remnants of survivors from Earth and a few other alien species totaling over 2 million crammed it tight spaces! It’s getting harder to avoid annihilating!
Very good writing, not many things that jumped out and said help send an editor. Jumping from character viewpoint to another was clear and appropriate since there were at least three different streams to follow. Had trouble putting it down until it was done. There were some surprises which I had envisioned one way but the author managed to surprise me and open up some more questions.
Absolutely brilliant sci-fi fiction. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. Space battles, planetary invasion and strange allies. I look forward to the next one.
This was an excellent read. This story has been really good. It pulls you in and the characters are likeable even with thier flaws. Can't wait to read the next installment
The action is steady and the good side wins another round of improbable battles. Could benefit by some more logical flow. Now they have food, take the survivors to their new home before taking on impossible odds.
Bill, Al and the crew really come to life in this story 😁 and to be honest I definitely would love to know more about Omaga and why it was built. Whats next for them I wonder?
A great story with a multitude of interesting characters; many side episodes during the development of the cast and the final plot. Will be reading the final episode next.
Great audiobook with excellent narration. I didn't like everything that Capt Bill did... I did enjoy the bonus story at the end about Bill's grandfather. I look forward to the conclusion!
The second book in the Starship Omega series turns its attention to what life aboard the Omega has become. The crew has saved many prisoners and they all now live on Omega.
This becomes the main focus of the first half of the book. There is not enough food, people are hungry, they have few illusions that this will end well and there is a militia that wants to take over the ship. The depth of the character and universe development has been amazing and it has kept me engrossed in the story.
The description of the situation on board the Omega lets you feel the despair and lack of hope. The storytelling moves at a very good pace and not only keeps you reading, but also keeps you guessing as to what will happen next.
Members of the original crew have doubts. They have lost crewmates and wonder about the direction the Captain is leading them. The second half of the book gives us more development of the planets, allies and enemies they are facing along with combat against long odds. This series is turning out to be one of the best the author’s have written, in my opinion.
I received an ARC in exchange for and honest review.
