Taken. Tortured. Threatened with a lifetime of torment. And still, I won’t betray my own kind to the men who took me.
I don’t care if it means being thrown back into that dark cell. Starved, broken, taunted with visions of the hell that awaits. They won’t steal my spirit. I won’t let them tame me.
But even I can’t fight an organization built on trafficking lives like mine. I need help. A way out.
I find it in the storm-cloud eyes of the man chained beside me – the one they call Riot. A man whose hands are stained with a decade of blood, his heart hardened by violence not of his making.
But when he claims me as a prize for pleasing his master, dread coils tight. Have I misjudged him? Betrayed my secrets to someone who won’t save me? Maybe he really is the beast they say he is.
And then again, maybe not.
He says he’ll get me out of this nightmare. That there’s a way to get back to the world I remember.
Suspicion wars with hope, but what choice do I have?
The true trial, however, lies in the shadows Riot cannot outrun. Because freedom comes at a cost. And I don’t think that he’s prepared to pay it.
Not even for me.
“Alpha Chained” is the fifth story in The Shadow Wolves, a series of interlinked but standalone paranormal romance stories featuring bold, sassy heroines and the alpha wolf shifters who are strong enough to be their fated mates. HEAs are guaranteed. Note that this story is written for mature audiences.
After two decades as a journalist, B.E. Brouillard made the leap to fiction. It was time to create the dark stories that had lurked in her mind for all those years. Tortured souls, flawed lovers, dysfunctional behavior...her characters are not for the faint-hearted. Having said that, many readers will find common ground with the less-than-perfect heroes of these stories. In spite of a mild case of cynicism, Brouillard remains a staunch romantic - Happily-Ever-Afters are guaranteed.
A child of the global village, Ms. Brouillard loves Paris, Africa, sushi, and champagne. When she's not wordsmithing dark debauchery, she spends time with her beautiful men, their German Shepherds, and her pack of killer ponies. Or drinking martinis with friends.
Alpha Chained is the Shadow Wolves book that grabs you by the throat from page one and refuses to let go. It’s darker, grittier, and more emotionally charged than the earlier installments—not because it abandons the series’ signature sass and strength, but because it digs into what happens when a heroine’s fire is tested in the worst possible way. This isn’t a story about a woman finding her mate in the wild; it’s about a woman surviving hell and daring to hope again.
The heroine is pure steel wrapped in scars. She’s been taken, tortured, starved, and threatened with a lifetime of torment, and yet she refuses to break. There’s something magnetic about her defiance—this stubborn, quiet fury that says, “You can hurt me, but you will not own me.” Even when she’s shoved back into that dark cell, even when the world narrows to pain and fear, she holds on to her identity with claws dug in deep. It’s impossible not to root for her.
And then there’s Riot.
He’s the kind of character who walks into a story carrying a decade of blood on his hands and a heart that’s been twisted into something unrecognizable. He’s dangerous, unpredictable, and shaped by violence he never chose. When she first sees him chained beside her, he’s a threat. When he claims her as a “reward” to keep his captors satisfied, he becomes a nightmare. And when he whispers that he can get her out—that he has a plan, that he won’t let her die here—he becomes something far more complicated.
The entire book lives in that razor-thin space between fear and trust. She doesn’t know if he’s her salvation or her doom. He doesn’t know if he deserves to save anyone, least of all her. Their connection is forged in the ugliest circumstances imaginable, which makes every flicker of tenderness feel like a rebellion. Every moment of hope feels dangerous. Every shared breath feels like a promise neither of them is sure they can keep.
What makes this story hit so hard is the shadow hanging over Riot. Freedom isn’t just a door they need to break through—it’s a cost he’ll have to pay, and the price might be more than he can bear. Watching her cling to the belief that he’s more than the monster they made him, while he battles the fear that she’s wrong, gives the romance this raw, aching vulnerability that lingers long after the chapter ends.
By the time the escape comes, you’re not just cheering for them to survive—you’re begging for them to find a way to live. Together. Whole. Unbroken. And when the HEA finally lands, it feels like a victory carved out of darkness with teeth and sheer willpower.
This one is intense, emotional, and beautifully feral—the kind of story that reminds you why the Shadow Wolves series hits so hard: bold heroines, broken alphas, and love that refuses to die even in the darkest places.
What an ending! Riot and Ruara are both being held captive by the same people who took the Wildview Pack. They endure so much during this book. Riot is strong, silent, grumpy. Raura is also strong, but her strength is more silent, while her mouth is not 🤣. She is a talkative one who radiates sunshine. They can't help but be drawn to each other and watching them go through everything that they do in this story, made my heart happy...in the end. This wraps up this series and I can't wait to see what this author brings us next.
This story had a bit of gore to it but it fit with showing the depths that Riot had got to. And hey! They’re wolves so one might expect a bit of blood and guts. Watching Riot’s development and recovering his humanity was part of what made this story so good. There were some hair-raising moments though! Overall this series was well written and worth reading.
Another captivating addition to series, will their nemesis Parker be brought to pay for his crimes Raura has been trying to cope with the incarceration under the reign of Parker a cruel and devious human that think that shifters are simply a means for him to use, to fight in his illegal ring or to sell on for a profit into live of servitude and beatings from new owners. Riot returns to the Enclave after he helps Raura to return to her family and then has to return to the Enclave, he loves her but he also cares for his sister and knows that Parker will hurt Willow and her family if he fails to return. Raura raises an army of her own to rescue her mate and to hopefully bring an end to Parker and as she has hoped there is no shortage of volunteers that will accompany her, after the devastation that he caused the previous time, he had called and kidnapped her. Riot knows that he has got to get his sister out and she is not fully aware of all that he has done to keep her and her family safe over the last decade, he also discovers that bot all of his pack had been murdered some were sold to new owners by Parker and he is determined to locate them. Raura in her search through the Enclave struck gold when she discovered the ledgers that holds all of the details relating to every shifter that has passed through Parker’s hands and what happened to them and who now has ownership of them and what they paid. These records will help them to locate the missing pack members both male and female from their pack and any others they can rescue. This is a riveting read and the interaction between Raura and Riot is heartfelt and you will find yourself glued to the page and unable to put the book down until the final page and you discover what is to come.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the wonderful writing.
In the wrong place at the wrong time… understatement of the century for Raura : one moment she’s showing a guest their well organized society ( or what they want the humans to see), the next she’s trapped in an underground prison for shifters. Riot has been “a guest “ of said prison for a long time, a money machine for the psycho who owns him. Escape for him it’s unthinkable , he’s never had a reason to and the potential consequences have always been holding him back but when he meets Raura ( combined with an impossible request by his owner that would completely destroy what’s left of his humanity) he’s ready to put a stop to all of that and take his destiny and a possible future with Raura into his hands. I’m sad the author is saying goodbye to this series, there are after all a few more wolves to write about, but I’m equally exited about the new series due next month. I’m sure it will be as gripping and original as all the previous ones.
I can’t believe this is the end of the series but I’m hoping there might be a novella to update on all that went before plus these wonderful couples featured. What a great ending though with Riot and Raura. The previous storylines all came together as Raura was taken at the end of the last book and is held with Riot who has been held for such a long time it might not be possible for him to be helped. The building of trust and the fragile relationship between them was so good but has Riot retained enough of his original wolf to save them both? Once again this was a great read and the whole series was a joy.
I loved this book and it was a great addition to this wonderful series! Raura and Riot were such fantastic characters and really made this a wonderful read! My heart went out to Riot! These two were just so sweet together and I loved how they protected each other! A wonderful ending to this series but I do hope we get to see more from this wonderful series at some point! A fantastic story that I highly recommend! This is my honest opinion of this complimentary copy of this book
Absolutely amazing end to the series, this one was full of danger and hurt. I loved it!! The feelings between the hero and heroine were perfect and I thought they were perfect together. I’m so sad this is the end, but look forward to whatever this author dreams up next. I received an ARC and this is my honest review.
This was so much better than book four. I don’t mind the dangling option for more books in the series. It’s absolutely not a cliffhanger and this book on its own made the series worth reading.
Fast read, lots of adventure, bad guys abound and romance is in the air. There is almost a happy ending for everyone, but just not yet. Waiting to turn the next page!
