Cuba: Chronological History: Cuba’s Intertwined Destiny with Spain and The United States

Rate this book
This book provides researchers, historians, Cuban Americans, and the public a timeline of every important event and data point that illustrates what has happened in more than five centuries. It is a key tool to demonstrate the relationship between prior and future events, presenting facts and data succinctly in a 19-chapter chronology that spans six centuries from before Columbus to 2022. As the title suggests, Cuba’s history has been buffeted by developments in Spain and the U.S., but also by the USSR in the 20th and 21st centuries and so, it is also front and center in the presentation of the events leading to today.
It spans political, social, economic, and cultural history, so that a clear picture emerges of how Cuba went from colony to nation, and the role it has played in the international arena. Each chapter begins with a summary to guide the reader.
The authors also explain the influence that Cuba exerts abroad in music, literature, painting, medicine, and sports while on the other hand, Cuba has exported guerilla warfare and totalitarianism, as millions of Cubans have fled their country.
Verdeja and Rodríguez drill down into Cuban History as few others taking advantage of modern research resources as well as the old-fashioned way of getting their hands on books and articles about the subject, conducting primary and secondary research, and leaving no stone unturned in their goal of leaving a full record of what has shaped the present and future of the island.
