Kitty Worthington Mysteries #9

Murder at a Funeral: A 1920s Historical Cozy Mystery

Rate this book
England. 1924 . With her wedding day to CDI Robert Crawford Sinclair mere weeks away, Kitty Worthington is thrilled beyond words. But first there’s a sad duty that must be performed—the reinterment of Robert’s birth mother at Castle Rutledge who is to be buried alongside her husband, the former marquis.

But on the day of the funeral, things don’t go according to plan. The vicar’s gone missing; the organist is drunk as a judge. And then there’s the body in the sanctuary. Not the one you’d expect.

The village constable soon asks Robert to help, something that Kitty advises against, afraid of the emotional toll the enquiry would exact on her fiancé. But then Robert’s brother becomes the main suspect, leaving them with no choice but to investigate.

Goodness knows they’re not lacking for suspects. The village crone caused endless strife in Chipping Bliss. As they proceed apace, shocking revelations and troubled pasts come to light. And just as they discover a vital clue, a threatening note arrives. If they don’t cease their investigation, a loved one will die.

Filled with intrigue, glamour, and more than a soupçon of humor, Murder at a Funeral (Book 9 in The Kitty Worthington Mysteries) is reminiscent of the golden age of mysteries. It's sure to delight lovers of Agatha Christie and Downton Abbey alike.

Murder and a cold case

I love these books, but the editing and obvious mistakes spoiled this a little for me. Whisky is distilled, not brewed and with every mention, and there were a lot, I got more and more annoyed. That aside, this was a good story, mostly about Robert and his legitimacy, with a murder thrown in for good measure. There were a few red herrings, but I figured it out. What I want to know is, what happened to the cousin!?

A funeral, a murder and a wedding

Some much happens in this book it’s hard to know where to begin. A surprise guest I won’t say who to avoid spoilers but I will say it was such a pleasure to finally meet them! Then we have sad duty the reinterment of Robert’s birth mother and her rightful recognition finally. It’s supposed to be a quick trip as there’s still so much to do and only a short time before the wedding but a murder puts paid to that plan. Robert’s past and present are colliding and it’s so hard for him and for Kitty to see his pain. Yet they cannot leave until the truth is found. With help from friends in London and those who pop up in the countryside they set out on an investigation. So much of what’s happening now is entwined in the past and they must dig deep and fast to get their facts because the wedding is set and there’s no missing it.
What a wonderful story. I loved seeing more of Robert and his family. We are usually caught up with the Worthington clan it was nice to see the other side of things. There are tragic events here as well as joyous moments. Each story is like watching a well crafted mystery show. You know the good guy will find the culprit but going along for the ride is so exciting. I am so happy that Kitty and Robert finally got to say their I dos. I’m especially glad that that’s not an ending but a new beginning. I wonder what they’ll stumble across on their honeymoon? I can’t wait!

Yay! A new Kitty book! After devouring this series over December and January, I have been anxiously awaiting the next one. The beginning of this book was exciting as an unexpected character shows up! After that Robert and Kitty leave town for the reinternment of his mother. Of course, things don't go as planned as another murder takes place. A lot of this story focuses on proving that Robert is the legitimate heir. With their wedding day approaching fast, Kitty and Robert must solve the murder and prove his claim before time runs out. I enjoyed Murder at a Funeral and the bonus short story you can download at the end. I love this series and adore these characters so I already can't wait for the next book!

Wonderful historical mystery

What an absolutely wonderful historical mystery. I absolutely love the written language. It puts one back a hundred years ago and lends a great deal of authenticity to the series.
Kitty, Robert and the gang are embroiled in another mystery - this one extremely close and personal. Can our heroes get everything done and make it to the church on time? Read on and find out.
A charming read

great cozy mystery

Book 9 of the kitty worthington mysteries - set in London in the 1920’s. Entertaining with lots of characters - can be read as a stand-alone- but why wouldn’t you want to hear how Kitty and Robert got their start?

A funeral and a wedding.

Kitty and Robert’s wedding is just a few days away, but first they have been called away for the re-interment of Robert’s mother in the small village where his family’s manor is. They have not traveled there since Robert’s appointment as heir. What was to be a short trip becomes longer after they discover a body when they arrive at the church. Freya Poole is the village gossip and anyone in the village could be a suspect. Lacking anyone in the village to adequately investigate, Robert is drafted. Soon most of their usual investigative team has arrived in the village to help. And they must hurry—Kitty and Robert’s wedding date has almost arrived. Another enjoyable read in the series, with just the right touch of romance and mystery offset by the banter between characters.

As always, lots of fun having Kitty and her crew solve a murder and, by the way, clear up Robert's title. The author has also introduced some new characters because so many of the originals have been successfully paired up. If you like your mysteries to have almost no gore, smart women, romance, tea and pastries (I do envy Kitty's metabolism.) this is the series for you.

If you haven't read any others of these, go back and start at the beginning, Murder on the Golden Arrow, and enjoy working your way up to this one.

I love the setting and story to these books but my goodness the editing is atrocious. “”I need something to settle my stomach. I’m afraid I’m not a good train traveler and need something to settle my stomach.” Plus characters are forever being referred to by the wrong name. It completely takes the reader out of the world of the book. I liked the cold case aspect and that there were a few less friends to constantly wade through, but the poor editing makes this a 3 star book in my opinion.

2 1/2 Stars

*Spoilers*

It was fine. It was light, something to listen to while I went about my day (did chores, ran errands). The basic story, mystery was also fine. I had some quibbles (see spoiler). Additionally, Some things got a little tedious. The reader knows these folks are rich. Do we really need to be constantly reminded? The expense car (the Rolls) and watch (Rolex, of course) and etc. It’s mentioned repeatedly; every opportunity. Ugh. I read other books regarding wealthy and it isn’t brought up as much. Plus, the folks (especially Kitty) seemed to be constantly eating. Of course, calories don't exist in most books like this. But I was okay with that. Must be nice. lol

This cozy mystery is a very fast-paced quick read. Kitty and Robert are preparing for their upcoming wedding when Robert is summoned to the family estate where his half-brother, Lord Rutledge, plans to have Robert's mother reinterred next to their father. Naturally Kitty accompanies Robert. Their plans to return quickly to London are interrupted by a murder, in which Lord Rutledge appears to be a prime suspect. Despite this the local constable requests Robert's help. At the same time a question arises about whether Robert's parents were actually married or not. But with the help of their friends both mysteries are resolved in time for the wedding.

England, October 1924. With just days before Kitty and Robert's wedding, they travel to Castle Rutledge for the reinterment of Robert’s birth mother in the family cemetery. As the funeral is about to start, a dead body is discovered, and the village constable asks Robert to investigate. Along with the murder inquiry, Robert and Kitty must find more definitive proof of his parentage so that questions of him inheriting the title promised him by Lord Rutledge can be quieted once and for all. After all the strife and confusion of the investigation, Kitty and Robert are finally married and and can finally start their wedded bliss together.

I enjoy this series, and this is a perfectly fine next in series, but there were a few irritating things in this one. For instance, an ancient method of execution was used, and the description here bears no resemblance to those detailed throughout several millenia of contemporary and historic accounts. Also, I know that the description of time before and after the hour differ radicaly between the UK and the US but surely someone British could have been asked to emend them so it reads right rather than an amalgam somewhere half way between the two nations?

More English traditions please

In England police sergeants have seniority over constables. In England bridesmaids follow the bride. As in royal wedding processions the bride and father lead. I enjoyed the story the different talents of the investigating committee make a good story.

Pleasant read, not too heavy but kept me on my toes throughout. I didn't have faintest idea who the murderer was till the end.
