Another sweet and swoony Layla Hagen story featuring the delicious Maxwell brothers. Even though his one is more of an enemies to lovers vibe, we still have that trademark low-angst, dreamy story telling approach from Layla. Our eldest Maxwell brother seems stoic and focused, the reliable big brother…until his new neighbor gets under his skin. But turns out she too is focused- pursuing her own dream. We have a bit of the opposites attract trope, the family ensemble dynamic Layla is known for, and all those feel good, easy to fall chemistry that makes Layla’s stories so light and low drama. Another great Maxwell world addition!

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟5* Fierce Love Stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Show me Forever is the third book is the Maxwell Brother series and is Declan’s Story. He is the oldest of the brothers and is rather serious as well as grumpy. His persona matches his profession as a lawyer very well.

When Declan inherits the existing tenant Liz on his property, he did not expect his life to be turned upside down. Liz’s dream has been to open her own Bakery but the town where she grew up is far too small and already has one, so she decided to move to Chicago and make her dream come true!

For her to achieve this dream she is holding down 2½ jobs so she can make it happen. When she returns home every evening after her Bar tending job, she distresses by playing her music loud and dancing to it. This really irritates Declan and on more than one occasion he has had to go over and tell her to turn it down. However, seeing her dance and be so cheerful causes feelings he is not prepared for.

Their chemistry was strong and undeniable. They were so good together and had so much in common when it came to their love and protectiveness towards their families.

This was a sweet and loveable story with characters you will fall in love with. Layla Hagen is so talented in bringing together families who are fun, fierce and protective and above all filled with an abundance of love for one another.

2.5 stars. ugh I feel like such a hater but this was kind of boring. I loved to idea of falling for the grumpy neighbor, but it was too insta-love for me and there really wasn't a strong plot. However this is technically the 3rd book in a series so you might enjoy it more having read the first two. I jumped straight into this one because it is considered a standalone but I typically find when its a series revolving around a friend group/family I tend to enjoy them more when I read them in order. This wasn't the book for me but I can definitely see why someone else may enjoy it!

Very underwhelming. There was absolutely no chemistry between the two leads, and I would hardly classify them as enemies at first. Within a week of meeting and “arguing” about her loud music, they are openly ogling each other and very quickly progress to being all in with each other. I just felt nothing.

I thought Declan was a decent but boring lead. There wasn’t much backstory, and it was odd that he had never really introduced anyone to his family and then he was introducing her within two weeks. He’s 38 years old - there wasn’t a single person he met worth introducing?

She was slightly annoying and I thought she came across as a little flighty and unrealistic. Again, 33 years old and working several jobs to save money for her dream bakery…but she has no culinary education or training. This all seemed like a pipe dream. And then on her second day in business she leaves for a family emergency (her niece had a fever…not extreme enough for me to leave my dream bakery on day 2 for a 3 hour bus ride to visit). By that night the baby is fine…so it was just a plot device to show how attentive Declan was by going to surprise her. How stupid.

Last point of extreme annoyance - a MILLION side characters are discussed and introduced. Unless you’ve been reading the full series, this is just overwhelming and too much. It was just over the top and irritating.

Liz's new landlord is a grumpy grump. A hot grump, but definitely a grump. Yes, she plays her music after hours, way after hours, but the volume isn't loud at all. She even tested it to make sure. He must have the hearing of a superhero or something. All she knows is she has to make it through these next few months to save enough money to open her own bakery. She can put up with the grumpiest (hottest) landlord, ever, if in the end she gets to achieve her dreams. She'll just have to do her best to avoid anymore run-ins with him. But when he starts showing her a different side to him, will she be able to resist him?

For an enemies-ish to lovers, grumpy/sunshine romance, Show Me Forever is surprisingly light-hearted. Declan actually isn't a jerk, just serious and yes, grumpy. He's a big sweetheart used to taking care of people, namely his siblings and his clients, so it makes complete sense he'd be drawn to his sunshiney new tenant who definitely needs a bit of help. The way they fell in love was sweet and low on the drama - another great addition to the Maxwell Brothers series.

4.5⭐️

I absolutely loved Declan and Liz's story. The tension and chemistry between Declan and Liz are undeniable though they tried to keep their distance. But then they get to know each other and they can't help but fall for each other. And for someone who's not into marriage, I can feel the change in him. That he wants Liz to be more and he wants to give her everything, take care of her and love on her. I absolutely loved just how sweet he is with her. He's so freaking swoony with the way he wants to make her happy. I just think their relationship is beautiful and it felt natural though their first met on the wrong foot.

And of course, I loved the Maxwell family. I loved just how close-knit they are and that they always support each other and immediately take in whoever their family have a relationship with into their fold. I can't wait for the next Maxwell's story.

Show Me Forever by Layla Hagen has some amazing characters with beautiful feels and sizzling hot passion. The enemies/neighbours to lovers romance was an entertaining ride. Declan has that edgy and swoony alpha hero vibe. And I just loved the good vibes and positive energy from Liz.

Declan Maxwell is the eldest Maxwell and he has always been the level headed and serious one. They are this big loving family that is also one of the most well known one in Chicago. When he buys a house for himself, his neighbour aka renter of the guest house annoys him a lot with late night music. But he completely misunderstood Liz. She is working hard whole day and half the night to save for her dream bakery. As they come to know each other, they realise that they have undeniable chemistry.

It was a sweet take on grumpy hero- Sunshine heroine. They come from two different worlds. Declan is from the affluent and influential side while Liz has to work hard for every penny. But Declan is far from snobby. He is so protective and caring and he goes to extreme lengths to take care of Liz. She is fierce and witty and sassy. She pushes Declan out of his comfort zone and makes him live more spontaneously. I loved Declan's alpha side so much. They are a big family and the siblings have a strong connection. I loved the bromance so much. It has a light heartwarming feel all over and I enjoyed it. The chemistry was definitely super hot. The story was just a bit one dimensional and I wanted a bit more drama and complexity. Once Declan and Liz spent some time together, it became pretty simple.

Wow! Declan, Declan, Declan, what can say about this man. He was a beautiful, dominant, pulls no punches, grump of a man. He is driven to distraction by Liz. Liz is a brilliant female character that is bold, beautiful and needs no one to take care of her. She has a plan especially after her brush with death, before she meets Declan her new landlord.

This was a beautiful story with very little drama which made its a joy to read. Sometimes you just need a story that flows in the romance department with no hurt, pain or anguish. And although there is a little trouble for the Maxwells. It really doesn't effect Declan and Liz. There is much fun in this book, I smiled huge and a few tears but those are not due to what you think.

I totally recommend this book and series. I really love the easy flow of this authors words.

„This Dream is Forever“ von Layla Hagen ist der dritte Band ihrer romantischen Reihe The Maxwells.

5 Star Review of Show Me Forever (The Maxwell Brothers #3) by Layla Hagen
This is the third book in the latest series from Layla Hagen and was a great addition to the series. This is Declan Maxwell’s story and the woman who brought him to his knees, Elizabeth (Liz) Watson.
From the first chapter I was hooked on the story that Ms. Hagen wove. The chemistry between Declan and Liz was intense and the sparks certainly flew between them. This book was everything that I was hoping it would be.
I really enjoyed the development of their relationship and the love that they found together. The Maxwell family had me laughing out loud on a number of occasions, I just love the relationship and that they always have each others’ back and are all up in one anothers business.
When Liz is injured she is surprised when Declan volunteers to take care of her. After all most of their interactions have been fiery. I liked how sassy, feisty and determined Liz is to make a success of her bakery. Declan is swoon worthy and just like his brothers I fell for him quickly.
I fell hard and fast for Declan and Liz, they were well suited to one another. However it is the love and camaraderie among the Maxwell’s that really takes this book and series to another level.
Another great story from Layla Hagen and one that ticked all the boxes for me.

I’m loving this series and for me each book in this series has outdone the one before and I have to say Declan Maxwell’s story is my favourite so far. Show Me Forever is all about a confirmed bachelor being brought to his knees by a very special lady.
Liz is currently living in Declan’s guest house while she saves up to open her own bakery, Sweet Treats but when she is injured at work she needs help and she is surprised that Declan steps in to take care of her while she recovers. What follows is an entertaining yet emotional journey as the strong, sassy Liz shows the playboy that love sometimes happens when we least expect it.
I was captivated from the first few pages and there was no putting down until I had read the final line, I needed more from Declan and Liz, I needed to know they got their HEA. I loved this couple but what took this story to another level was Declan involving his brothers as he sets out to help Liz achieve her dream. Another great read from the very talented Layla Hagen and the perfect addition to The Maxwell Brothers Series.

Liz has been working her behind off to open her own bakery, so renting a place for cheap helped her out a great deal as she saved up to achieve her dream. However, her sweet landlord sold the house to Declan Maxwell, who isn't exactly nice to her. It seems like he's always grumpy, and lawd knows he's not so nice when she plays her music too loud, so he'll show up & she goes toe to toe with him which was quite entertaining for me to be honest. Things take a turn when she needs help & he totally steps up which changes things, and all of a sudden, these two are actually getting to know each other rather than continue to battle it out. Layla Hagen is so talented at creating stories filled with heart. Show Me Forever is a delightful read that left a smile on my face, and I believe it will do the same for you so you know what to do! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

3.5 - This was a cute opposites attract / enemies to lovers. Declan is the grumpy lawyer/landlord with a renter who cannot respect his right to sleep through the night without her loud music. Liz is an aspiring baker with so many jobs that she has to decompress at night by dancing.

Once these two start seeing the human (not annoying) side to each other the sparks fly. And man, do they fly!

For me, the romance between Declan and Liz felt kind of too good to be true. There was very little conflict for the couple, even when there should be, and problems were resolved so easily.

Declan has a huge family and Liz has three jobs, so there are A LOT of characters to keep track of. Perhaps if I had read the first book in the Maxwell Brothers series I would have been better prepared.

This is an easy read with little angst, so if you need a book with little conflict between the MCs, this is a great choice.

I read an advance copy of this book and these are my honest opinions.

Getting on her new landlords good side, Liz never imagined the pull Declan would have on her and vice versa.
Declan, a divorce attorney never gave love and marriage a second thought, that is until his tenant decides to dance to her loud music in the middle of the night,
Another fantastic read from Layla Hagen that will leave you swooning and yearning for the next story to fall into your lap.

I really wanted to like this, but I think it just wasn't for me. I thought there would be more tension and angst but it was def. insta love. The blurb kind of gives off the vibe that there would be more enemies to lovers/ grumpy neighbor, but after the first couple of chapters, any tension that would have started is gone.

If you love contemporary romances, you will love this one.

Once again Layla Hagen grabs the reader's attention with wonderfully written characters and a storyline that at times made me laugh out loud and other times made me sigh with happiness. Tight-laced divorce attorney Declan finds his match in house guest from hell Liz who dances to her own music and follows her own agenda. Watching the mighty fall in love was a joy to read. Cannot wait for more Maxwell Brothers!!

Declan & Liz’s Sweet & Steamy Story Is About Family & Following Your Dreams! The Maxwell Family Saga Continues In The Background As Declan Finds Himself Wanting Things He Never Desired Before. He Falls Hard & Fast For Liz, Whose Work Ethic & Determination Impress Him.

This is the third book in a series about the Maxwell family of Chicago.

ABOUT THE MAXWELL FAMILY:

The legendary Maxwell family is known for the famous bookstores they once owned. Ten years ago, those stores were sold off as the next generation went off to pursue their own dreams. Though each of the Maxwell kids received a trust fund from the proceeds of the sale, their sense of hard work kept them from becoming lazy.

Emmett and Lena Maxwell are enjoying their retirement now, but they worked hard as they raised their six boys. Beatrice, Emmett’s mother, had lost her husband years earlier, and she stepped in to help with the task of raising the children. Still, family dinner was always an important event for the entire family. Emmett’s younger brother Harvey had worked for the family business as well. Though retired in London now, he had turned to work to nurse his broken heart after his wife died, frequently traveling abroad. In his absence, his two daughters were left with Emmett and Lena as they grew up, adding to their large household. The family is very tight-knit. There is plenty of ribbing, but there is also an abundance of love and support.

Declan is the oldest Maxwell brother. He has a take-charge personality and a practical approach to life. He is a successful attorney.

Luke is second in birth order and three years younger. He is Declan’s opposite, always trying to cause trouble. He enjoys being a ringleader in his efforts to sow chaos. Luke is closest in age to their cousins, Kimberly and Reese. He owns his own architecture company.

Tate is the third oldest. Like Declan, his mother considered him a “trusted general.” He developed a love of wine as he grew up – something that he and his father had bonded over. Today he is CEO of Maxwell Wineries, headquartered in Chicago. He is skilled as a businessman, but his people skills, in general, aren’t as sharp. He is the single dad of nine-year-old Paisley, a badge he wears with honors, but it comes with scars.

Tyler comes next, and he lives for hockey. He plays goalie for the Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blades. He has summers off but is busy much of the rest of the year. He enjoys getting rowdy and believes in trying everything once.

Sam is sometimes quieter than his brothers, but he has a rowdy side as well. He works abroad for Doctors Without Borders.

Travis is fearless and independent. He is celebrating the success of his startup, seeing all his hard work finally pay off. His personal life takes a backseat to work; he hasn’t had time for anything more than one-night-stands for the past three years. He sometimes gets into trouble, but he is also there to offer a helping hand when needed.

Three of the brothers keep offices in the same downtown Chicago building, making it easy to grab a drink together after work. Sam and Tyler travel for work but visit whenever they can.

Kimberly, their cousin, lives overseas in Paris.

Reese, Kimberly’s sister, lives in Chicago and is nursing a broken heart. She always enjoyed spending time in the family bookstores growing up and is happy to begin working in their only remaining bookstore – the flagship store that started it all. Their Gran had kept the solitary store for sentimental reasons.

FROM PROMISE ME FOREVER, BOOK 1:

Tate Maxwell, thirty-four, is the CEO of Maxwell Wineries. The company is his passion, but his daughter Paisley will always be his number one priority. He got married just over ten years ago right after college. He was young and naïve, believed he and Nora were in love, but he eventually discovered that had all been an illusion. Nora had given birth to Paisley almost ten years ago, but modeling had been her true love. Tate was left to raise Paisley alone, and though there might be no love lost, the failure of his marriage weighs on him. He wants the world for his daughter, and he punishes himself for the fact that she barely has a mother, save for one or two visits each year. As the summertime nannies come and go over the years, he realizes he needs something more stable for Paisley for the daytime house while he is at work – a female figure that can serve as a constant in her life. He turns to an agency to help find the perfect nanny – one that can continue on beyond the end of summer break.

Lexi Langley, thirty-one, has a golden rule: never date parents. She teaches fourth grade and loves her job – working with kids is a pleasure. She enjoys spending time by the lake on her summers off, but this year is different. Her parents back in Boston live on a modest income, her mother a school teacher and her father a carpenter. With her mother’s medical bills piling up, Lexi is determined to do all she can to help out. Towards that end, she hopes to find a summer job this year. When she gets sent to interview for a nanny position, she ends up pleasantly surprised in more ways than one. The job looks promising and the little girl she would be working with is adorable. Moreover, her potential employer is captivating – and if not mistaken, he seems to have eyes for her, too. She really needs the job, but she knows instinctively that her golden rule is in real danger in Mr. Maxwell’s presence.

Wow! Tate and Lexi sizzle in this single dad and nanny romance. Their sweet and sexy story is infused with a keen sense of family and loyalty. The Maxwell family of Chicago is introduced here; watch for more to come. Readers get immersed in the Chicago setting – downtown, the lakefront, Lincoln Park, etc. The story is wonderfully written. The plot is fairly simple as it pertains to Tate and Lexi. The story is character-driven, and there are a number of characters, each with their own stories spinning in the background. Collectively, there is a lot happening. The story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Tate and Lexi. I rate this book five stars.

FROM HOLD ME FOREVER, BOOK 2:

This book opens in early October, about one month after Travis sold his startup. Tate engaged to Lexi, and Tate’s daughter Paisley is now ten.

Tyler Maxwell, thirty-one, lives for hockey and family. He is the fourth of six boys, and his family is very tight. Tyler doesn’t have time for relationships because his career is just too demanding. At his age, he is lucky to still be playing, but the fact that he is the best goalie in the league helps. He is signed with the Chicago Blades, but for now, he is benched. Tyler doesn’t regret standing up for his cousin Reese last month, but her ex-fiancé not only injured him, but Malcolm also staged it all on video to get the maximum damage. The video had gone viral, and the Blades’ management isn’t happy about it – the video was bad for their image and turned off sponsors. Tyler would be off the ice anyways due to his shoulder injury, and he takes it all in stride. He is excited about the volunteer work that management has set up for him in the meantime to improve his image. Coaching underprivileged pre-teens is right up his ally – he is comfortable with kids thanks to all the time he has spent with his niece Paisley. Teaching kids to play hockey, and absorbing all their energy, should prove to be fun.

Kendra Douglas, twenty-nine, is the volunteer and program coordinator for The Illinois Volunteer Society, headquartered out of Bucktown. She matches volunteers with programs, working with various groups across the city. She loves her job, but it does demand a lot of her time. Her younger sister Emma followed in her footsteps, and the two now share an office together. They are best friends, but they are nothing alike. Emma got the creative gene from their mother, and Kendra inherited her practical nature from their father. Kendra is serious and disciplined. Their childhood was not easy following their father’s death. Their mother worked tirelessly to support them, but the strain was hard on them all. They were very lucky they escaped the clutches of social services and foster homes. Kendra is the proud owner of her first home, the realization of one of her biggest dreams. It needs a little work, but she doesn’t shirk from responsibility and is no stranger to pinching pennies. She doesn’t have time for a social life now – even for someone as sinfully hot and surprisingly considerate as her newest volunteer. Fortunately, Tyler Maxwell’s arrogance and his puck bunny fan club make it easier for her to resist his charms.

When Tyler and Kendra first meet, they have immediate chemistry. Neither is looking for a relationship, but they eventually break down the barriers that hold them back. Their story is about family and responsibility. The couple has a few challenges, but they eventually find a happy ending.

Tyler and Kendra’s steamy hockey romance sizzles. It is another great story about the tight-knit Maxwell family. The Maxwells are vibrant and alive with history and controversy – watch for more to come. The story is nicely written, although it sometimes dwells a little too much on the minutia. The plot is fairly simple. The characters feel real. They are three-dimension and easy to connect with. The story is told in first person. The POV alternates between Tyler and Kendra. I rate this book four stars.

IN THIS BOOK:

This book opens in April in Chicago. Tate’s daughter Paisley is still ten. Both Tate and Tyler are now engaged.

Declan Maxwell, thirty-eight, works hard to maintain his reputation as the best divorce attorney in Chicago and beyond, so he values his downtime. The long hours devoted to the job during the week are rewarded with his strict no-work policy on the weekends. The oldest of six boys, he has a take-charge attitude and a pragmatic outlook. The serious-minded attorney credits his family for keeping him grounded. His parents’ marriage has happily withstood the test of time, but their example, in Declan’s experience, is more an exception than a rule. Declan doesn’t see himself ever settling down. He hasn’t ever felt compelled to introduce a woman to his family. He dates casually, but relationships are not for him.

Declan is happy as a bachelor and very happy to have just moved into his new Gold Coast home. After a few months of renovation, it looks like new. The only problem remaining is the seven months left on his tenant’s lease. The former owner had rented out the guest house, and Declan is obliged to honor the lease. Unfortunately, the beautiful spitfire living in his backyard has a penchant for playing music in the middle of the night. Declan counts on a good night’s rest each night to fuel him through his grueling days, and the late-night interruptions are wreaking havoc on his schedule. To make things worse, he has not had a date in some time, so the fiery blonde isn’t just fueling his anger, she is stirring up feelings he would rather not admit to himself.

Elizabeth “Liz” Watson, thirty-three, had an awakening one year ago. It happened after a tragic accident nearly took her life. She has since recovered, but the scar on her abdomen will be a life-long reminder of that close call. She lost her boyfriend Dexter as well as her self-confidence in the aftermath, but she is nevertheless moving forward. She knows life is short. She is done talking about her dream of owning a bakery – she is going to make it happen. She has meticulously planned and carefully added to her savings.

Liz is very close to her family – to her parents and her sister, Rose. She comes from Sunnyvale, a tiny town about four hours away from Chicago. Following her dream meant leaving her hometown behind and moving to the city, so she set out on her own. She found a rental in a great location and has worked two and a half jobs for months while waiting for the perfect location for her bakery to come along. She might not have much time outside of work and sleep, but every penny she saves will help ensure her future success when she eventually opens. Plus the catering and bartending jobs have given her excellent experience in a variety of ways. Things were looking good until Helen sold her home to the handsome Maxwell bachelor. His late-night complaints about her music are seriously impacting her ability to wind down after her shift, and she needs those precious few hours of sleep each night.

Declan and Liz start out as enemies. Neither can get a good night’s sleep living in such close proximity to one another, and the tension between the pair builds. But underneath their heated exchanges is a different kind of tension, and it builds until they finally have no choice but to admit their interest in one another. With Liz living just steps away, things get a little on the serious side quickly, and when family shows up, Liz gets pulled into the Maxwell clan.

There are a few issues that the family must deal with in Declan’s story, both relating to cousin Reese. She returns from visiting Kimberly in Paris and her father in London, but she comes home with shocking news that she struggles to share. Separately, Reese’s ex-fiancé Malcolm just won't’ go away quietly despite all the chaos he has already wrought upon the family. This time his sights are set on taking down Declan, and although Declan is confident in his defense, he knows it will stir up a lot of hurt for Reese when she finds out. Declan and Liz face a few problems together, but it only brings them closer in the end. They eventually find their happy ending.

Book four, Kiss Me Forever, is Luke Maxwell and Miss Holmes’s story. The tail end of this book leads into theirs. Their one-night stand as strangers turns into a workplace fiasco when it is discovered that Luke is her new boss.

Declan and Liz’s sweet and steamy story is about family and following your dreams. The Maxwell family saga continues in the background as Declan finds himself wanting things he never desired before. He falls fast and hard for Liz, whose work ethic and determination impress him. They share a love of family, and Declan’s steadfast support has Liz swooning. The story is nicely written. The plot is somewhat simple. The characters are nicely developed. The story is told in first person. The POV alternates between Declan and Liz. I rate this book four stars.

I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

sweet story

Love Layla Hagen books. This one is totally unexpected- enemies doesn’t really describe it. Can’t wait for the second book!!

I did not remember that I've read a book from this author before. The good news is, I could tell this book was written by the same author as a previous book I read based solely on her "author voice." About a quarter into this book, I thought for sure it was written by the same author who wrote another book I read over a year ago and, when I checked, I was correct. It's a positive when an author has such a distinct style or voice that you can recognize their work.

The bad news is that this author's style is just not for me. I don't know if all the author's books are like this, but from reading some of the reviews of this book, it seems perhaps they are all similar as I saw reviews that praised the things I dislike as a standard for this author's work.

In this book, which is NOT an enemies to lovers book, the characters get together right away and stay together the entire book. There's no conflict and no strong plot. There's a lot of fluff, but there's not anything in this story to keep it from being boring. There's no reason they shouldn't be together, no fighting of feelings, no external conflict, etc. I feel like books like this need strong, interesting characters to be engaging because, otherwise, why is this story a book?

If you like low angst romances that are purely fluff then this author very well could be a hit with you.

This series has all the makings of an enjoyable romance: couples meeting, falling in love, and navigating their stories with minimal angst. On paper, it’s a sweet, contemporary collection that checks all the boxes for fans of feel-good romance. But there seems to be something missing for me.

The stories are undeniably nice - maybe too nice. They’re sweet and wholesome, but the lack of tension or complexity left me feeling disconnected. Everything seemed a little too perfect, a little too predictable, and I found myself waiting for something - anything - to shake things up.

The characters, while likable, didn’t have much depth. Their conflicts were surface-level, and I struggled to find moments that made them feel like real, messy, complicated people. Without those layers, I couldn’t invest in their journeys or care about their happily-ever-afters. I think also the issue is the lack of interaction with other locations and people.

The pacing didn’t help either. It felt like the stories just kept going without much drive or urgency. There wasn’t enough to keep me hooked or excited to see what would happen next. By the end, I realized I wasn’t emotionally moved - I was kind of just… bored.

Maybe it’s just me; maybe I prefer my romances with more bite, more tension, or a greater sense of stakes. But this series, while pleasant, feels a little too polished and predictable to leave a lasting impression. If you’re looking for something light and easy, it might work for you. Also every time this stoic, serious lawyer kept saying “babe” it just irked me for some reason.

I’ll keep going as I’ve spent audible credits on the rest already but hoping the next couples go a little deeper.

Most of the book was super boring to me. I liked the premise of a hot landlord buying the main house and his tenant living in the guest house and them disliking each other but parts of this book made no sense to me. For instance the female owns a bakery and the male is a lawyer and for some reason he’s always awake and leaving before her. Don’t bakers go in at like 3am to bake a bunch of things fresh for the day? He wakes up and kisses her first thing in the morning and the author says “how good she tastes” and all I can think about is stink, gross morning mouth 🤢. The male has never been in a serious relationship and for some reason all his brothers know he’s possessive when he seemingly has no history of that. The female works 2 jobs where she’s on her feet all day slaving away and when she gets home she needs to dance to relax? Anyone who has worked in the service industry on their feet literally all day long probably doesn’t need to dance to relax after. The male is mad at her for her loud music because he can’t sleep at night and wants to go to bed and she’s keeping him up but later in the book he’s “not a morning person” but for some reason the girl who works morning until 2am being a bartender is just fine waking up early in the morning? So anyway, I found the book annoying and things didn’t make sense and I didn’t like how quickly they went from disliking each other to falling madly in love. I would have liked more of a build up. More tension. They were basically lovey dovey the entire book and there was no conflict at all. Very boring.

Show Me Forever the 3rd book in Hagen’s Maxwell Brothers series is billed as an enemies to lovers trope. But to be honest the enemies part of the story concludes so quickly it hardly matters. Declan Maxwell the eldest of the Maxwell siblings and one of Chicago’s top lawyers has purchased a large old Victorian in Chicago’s exclusive Gold Coast neighborhood. But part of the purchase agreement was he allow Liz a young woman who had become close with the property’s previous owner an elderly woman named Helen to remain as a tenant until her current lease expires. Declan finds his late-night sleep interrupted by the music Liz plays to dance and wind down to when she gets home from working her night shift tending bar. Whether Liz is actually blasting the music as Declan complains or he just has bat like hearing as his siblings claim remains a matter of debate. What isn’t open for debate is the fact that Declan who is a love cynic after handling too many divorces finds his tenant annoying attractive. Liz, likewise finds her grumpy landlord with a stick up his ass equally as attractive. Living on the same property the two quickly learn there is more to the other than their original perceptions. The more they learn about each other the more their attraction grows. Liz learns Declan is an intelligent, confident man with a large caring and protective streak. Declan learns that Liz is a goal oriented hard working woman who despite working long days and nights does her best to find ways to enjoy life. His thoughts turn rather quickly from finding ways to remove her from his property to moving her into his bed and life in a big way.
I loved the Liz character. I loved how she was unashamed to say exactly what was on her mind. I felt myself becoming exhausted just thinking about the number of hours she worked in an average day. I’m not a fan of grumpy broody heroes but like Liz I couldn’t help but like Declan for his loyalty to his family and now Liz. He was a bit of a control freak with a bossy side but it was because he always wanted to protect the people he loved from anything bad happening to them. As a man I always enjoy a male character who realizes he’s found the woman he’s been waiting for and pulls out all the stops to prove to her he’s the one for her.
I’ve written several less than stellar reviews lately that frankly contrasted with the opinions of the other Goodreads reviewers. But I have no qualms with giving this book 5 stars One of my prerequisites for a truly good series is that all the main characters reappear in each book. Hagen in her family series has never failed in that regard. In this book as in the first two in the series all the Maxwells are present and accounted for in secondary roles. Cousin Reese’s conflict with Malcom her ex is even a secondary story line in this one. I liked that this book had a nice balance of happy warm family feels and of two people falling in love. It had some angst because what couple in a relationship doesn’t have some? But it never gets overbearing nor drags on forever. There’s sexy times but sex is never the main focus of the story. Two good people with loving families getting to know each other and falling in love is. It’s a well paced book that will put a smile on your face.

When Declan Maxwell bought his new house he definitely did not expected to inherit the sassy loud music loving tenant that came along with the rental property attached to his new home. For strict order loving divorce lawyer Declan the last thing he needs is loud late night dance parties in his back yard or for Liz the total knock out that hosts these solo parties.

..

Liz has always dreamed of opening her own bakery but to do so she needs a big chunk of cash, which is exactly why she works three jobs and saves every cent that she can, and after a long day at work her one solace is unwinding with some music. To bad her new grouchy landlord can’t seem to stand her or her late night dance parties, but when Liz gets injured at work she is shocked to find that Declan offers to help care for her as she heals… maybe her new grouchy pants landlord is actually a closet softie that she is falling for…

..

Oh be still my romance loving heart, this book was everything and more! I have been loving the Maxwell series to bit and let me just tell you that Declan is easily my favourite of the lot!

..

I just loved the connection and chemistry between Declan and Liz, these two played of each other perfectly. I just adored getting to see these two falling for each other as they spent more time together. Liz was such a cool leading lady, not only was she really nice but I loved her determination to open her own bakery. As for our hero, well it was impossible not to love Declan. I loved his protective and caring nature and that he was so connected to his family.

..

One of the best parts of this series is the fact that family is such a big part of the overall story and this theme is very much present in this book. I just loved getting to see Declan interact with his family and getting to see Liz fit right in with all the crazy Maxwells.

..

Show Me Forever is a definite must read, this drama free swoon worthy romcom will have you hooked right from the first chapter.

Liz has made some big decisions in the last 6 months and one of them was to move to Chicago and open up a bakery. She was so lucky to find a beautiful guest house that was for rent that allowed her the ability to work extra hard to make the dream a reality. Now if only she could find a place that would work for the bakery. Well, that and her new landlord would allow her to workout in peace.

Declan was a well-known lawyer. He was ruthless and good at what he did. What he needed the most right now? Sleep. When he bought the beautiful house, he now calls home, he promised to allow the tenant to stay until her lease was up in another 6 months. As these two buttheads they both find themselves at odds and as they call a truce of sorts, they realize that there is so much more to the other person. Being the oldest Maxwell, Declan has always been the protector of his family of five brothers and two cousins. The one thing about this family is they always work together through things and don’t keep secrets. So, when the family has a couple of things come up we get to see them problem solve.

I fell in love with this family, but more importantly I love how they do try to work things through. There is no one person better than the other, just everyone equal. Liz, this woman is pure sunshine. She carries a light that everyone can feel before they see. The warmth is there and her love for baking is just perfect. Liz works 2 ½ jobs to hopefully make her dreams come to reality. Truly the best was watching as Liz learned what it meant to be a part of the Maxwell group as a friend to start and then being with Declan. There is something magical being able to witness a grumpy guy fall for the sunshine. Now to go back and read the first two brothers, because I am in love with this family.
