De jonge en ambitieuze econoom Chris wordt vanuit zijn geboortestad Den haag als intermediair uitgezonden naar Qingdao, China. Jelai’s persoonlijkheid werkt op Chris in met de kracht van een eeuwenoude Chinese bezweringsformule. De jonge en onervaren Chris dreigt zich lelijk te branden voor hij weet – echt weet – wat vuur is.

Very good book that emphasises on the differences in culture between China and The Netherlands, how hard it is to communicate with each other, even when you speak the same language. The difference between the way feelings are shown and interpreted, how deep it goes and how powerless you feel when you don't understand the other, or he/she doesn't understand you.
For people from "the western world" it is a good introduction to chinese culture because it is seen from the point of view of a Dutch man, but it also shows the other side. You learn the subtle ways of the chinese and especially how they trade/do business.

The story is deep and keeps you reading. This is definitely one of my favourite books.

Ik vond het een lastig boek om doorheen te komen en het verhaal was ook lastig te volgen. De verschillen in cultuur tussen Nederland en China waren nog wel interessant, maar wat mij betreft is het geen aanrader.

I have special memories regarding this book. The author, Lulu Wang, was in the book shop to sign copies of this book, and I have one of them. She looked for about a minute at all people that approached the table she sat at for an autograph and the things she saw / found she wrote in a Chinese saying (or poem?) (translated into Dutch).

After that the book couldn't possibly be bad, could it? And to me it wasn't. It is about a Dutch boy, who falls in love with a Chinese girl. A mysterious girl that intrigues him, breaks his heart, but loves him still.
A very nice book, a good story. I did not understand Jelai, felt very sorry for Chris at times and tried to figure out how the two of them would ever be able to live together. If ever.

Read it twice already, and I'm sure I'll read it again AND find something new in it.
