Washed up and burned out newsman Dan Roe leaves his spot on the beach to try and save his 12 year-old foster son Timmy from a murder charge in a behavioral school that has dark secrets. He sells his Pulitzer Prize winning name to a small town weekly newspaper to get to the truth of the murder and captures the assistance of the hard-edged staff of the paper that includes Dooley, an attractive and ambitious reporter. The circuitous route to the truth leads the two to a distraught preacher, through junk yards, a late night rendezvous, bar busts and into the muddled field of child protective care. Timmy's case ends in dramatic revelations about who owns the behavioral school and the prescription drugs prescribed to the young boys there.
