When you’re crushing on a guy, the last thing you want is to get caught singing their name while naked in the locker-room showers. Thankfully, Ryan pretended not to notice. I can play the denial game with the best of them, but I can’t ignore the growing feelings I have for him. We’ve been rivals on the field for two years, but lately, my eyes keep finding him off the field as well, drawn to his piercing blue stare and brilliant smile. As fate would have it, we’re paired together for a sequence of Star-Crossed Lovers skits, and while I’m excited at the prospect of spending more time with him, with rumors of team cuts at the end of the season, it makes me wonder if there is any point in starting anything at all. Maybe we’re just destined to stay on opposing sides.

Being on the other side of the world from your entire family is hard, especially when you see everyone else going home to theirs every night. So, when I moved in with Duckie and Ian, I was excited to at least have people to come home to. But they aren’t the only ones I see every day. Across the alley lives an old man and his cat who greet me with a demonic howl and a gruff reminder that my favorite game isn’t “real” baseball. Good thing I’m not easily offended, and while I might be still on the fence about the cat, imagine my surprise when I discover the old man is Alan Beaker’s grandfather. Suddenly, my days aren’t just filled with on field practice and rehearsals with the guy I’ve been crushing on hard, they’re also filled with time spent with him off the field too. It isn’t long until I notice just how devoted to family Alan is, and the more time I spend with his, the more they make me feel like I belong. Now if only I can get Alan to take a chance on us, then I can make this feeling last forever.
Becca Jackson writes MM romance that delivers heart, heat, and happily ever afters for some totally adorkable and fabulous guys.
Becca’s books have all your favorites, small-town romances, bi-awakenings, sports, friends to lovers, and enemies to lovers too, but no matter the trope that takes your fancy, you’ll always find a happily ever after.
This felt much shorter than the previous books and it felt like not as much really happened?
I do really like Ryan and Alan together, their relationship was sweet and I loved how they were both so sure the other wasn't interested in them - but it went from thinking that to hooking up so quickly! They didn't even really have a conversation about it 😂 it was literally an impulsive kiss and off we go. It was nice how easily they both accepted their new relationship, but I expected a little more tension, especially from how many times it was reiterated that each thought the other wasn't into them at all.
The chemistry between them was good though, and I loved how this focused more on the behind the scenes aspect to Banana Ball than just their training and the games, because they were covered fairly heavily in books one and two. There was a lot of family focus too with both characters having their families mentioned frequently, and I loved how they were trying to be sneaky about people knowing they were together but failed miserably. Precious the cat had me laughing too, and I found that so realistic because some cats are absolute angels to literally everyone except you!
What bugged me though is that it felt unfinished. There's all this talk about Ryan going home to the UK to visit his family but we don't get to see it on page - honestly I would rather the epilogue focused on Ryan and Alan and their future plans, rather than the wedding of a side character which was cute, but it wasn't about this couple and I wanted to see more of them. There's also a lot of talk about the team going to stay at Alan's ranch with his brothers and his grandad, and Alan mentions that he wants to be more confident at swimming so he can swim at the ranch, but again we don't get to see it! Does Alan ever get over his fear of water? Do they swim together? Do they go to the UK together so Alan can meet Ryan's family? Do they go to the ranch? Too many unanswered questions for me.
There was also a lot of talk about needing to disclose their relationship because of how a previous teammate/colleague relationship had ended badly, but no one really seemed to know what was required - surely it's something all employees would know, especially as multiple characters mentioned how much of a disaster it had been and that they thought there was paperwork involved - but again, nothing came of it. The brief meeting with the team owner kind of gave the impression that no one but him knows what's going on and he was perfectly happy to let all of his employees stress about their futures...
I really liked the concept of rival players falling for each other but there were just too many things that were started and never finished for me. I'm not a fan of loose ends and I prefer that plot points that get raised multiple times actually have a resolution in the book. It may well be resolved in the next book, but if so then it took up a lot of page time in a fairly short book where I would have preferred it focusing on things that were actually happening!

I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review
- Banana Ball (Baseball) - Mutual Pining - Close Proximity - British/American - Teammates Like Family - Adorable Families - Cooking Together - Low Angst
Think Savannah Bananas! Look them up if you don't know about them already.
This was so cute and I liked the Banana Ball aspects included in the story. If this goes to audio, I hope they do all the singing from the players because that would *chef's kiss*. I really liked the flamboyant and silly antics of the all the players and it brings the guys together in many ways. Many of the players have created their own found family overtime, which includes the opposing team. You get cameos of the prior couples and get to see how they're doing now.
These two have been crushing on each other for a while but neither one thinks the other could ever be interested. Cute! This all changes when Ryan happens to hear Alan singing about him in the shower. Ryan moves into the place across from Alan's grandpa and the performance coordinator pairs these two together as star-crossed lovers. Doesn't take long for them to realize they both are interested in each other but Alan tries to fight it as to not cause trouble with the teams. Doesn't work of course, the pull is too strong and they're made for each other. He realizes that Ryan is sweet, patient with him, and a family man like he is. The angst is low and more their perception than anything else.
I wish the epilogue was actually about the couple and not just them attending someone else's wedding. Things are left unanswered instead of shown at the end of the book. Does the group go to the ranch? Does Alan go with Ryan to the UK for granny's birthday bash?

This story was really sweet, I loved the interaction between the characters and how they just become more. Ryan has been far away from his family and his longing for them, now that he moved with Duckie, he has the surprise to meet his new neighbour Alan’s grandfather who is a funny pain.
The funniest part is that Ryan and Alan are both crushing on each other but they’re both afraid to do the first step, good thinks their choreographer thinks they will make a good cross lover duo.
Truly a beautiful and sweet love story between two banana balls players from opposite teams, there is some jokes, dancing, banter, a scary cat, some cooking/swimming lessons and a lot of love.
I received an ARC Copy of this book from the author, this review is from my own thoughts 😍
Aww I bloody love this series ❤️ Loved Alan and Ryan and I'm so glad they got their book. Fits in perfectly with the others in the series, even get more Duckie so I'm happy!!
No spoilers here but such a nice feel-good read. You can't not fall in love with these 2 and the oblivion between them at the start was just adorable.
Highly recommended.
P. S. I know far too much about Banana Ball for a Brit 😂
I received an ARC of this book direct from the author and this is my honest review
This is an opposites attract romance, featuring Alan and Ryan, and is book three in the Love In Play series.
Alan and Ryan have been rivals on the field for years, but being paired for Star-Crossed Lovers skits makes it harder to ignore the crush that’s been building between them. As they spend more time together, on and off the field, they have to decide if it’s worth the risk to turn their rivalry into something more.
This was such a sweet sports romance. Alan and Ryan’s rivalry made the slow-burn chemistry even better, and the Star-Crossed Lovers skits were the perfect excuse to push them closer. I also loved the found family vibe, Ryan getting wrapped up in Alan’s world (and his grandfather) gave the story so much heart. Cute, funny, and full of butterflies.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 3 in series MM sports romance Opposites attract Rival to more Banana baseball players Forced proximity Secret crush Loves his grandparent Singing in the shower Spicy times Secret relationship Found family HEA
And for a 3rd time once again!! I’m just really loving the all together real cute, very low angst, fluffy sweetness with some good spice vibes! I’d keep reading for as many more couples as this author wants to bring up - banana ball is real baseball with loads of queers and I’m hereeee for it!! Gimme more
This is such a cute, sweet and fluffy story! I loved Ryan and Alan and they were just too cute together! Loved the different team dynamics and the grandpa was great.
Alan & Ryan are just so dang sweet together. When Ryan moves in with Duckie & and Ian, his across the alley neighbor happens to be Alan's surley grandpa, who is the best person ever. The two bond over close family ties, and they will do everything for them. They may be on opposite teams, but that doesn't matter to either. They encourage the other to be a better player. I love the team dynamics where they all support each other no matter what choices they make while messing with each other along the way. What a great series about a sport that takes the boring parts of baseball away and adds fun in!.
First off, I have to say that I am totally loving the banana ball series! I adore how flamboyant and fun the antics of the teams are and Totally Opposed is no different... This book brings these guys together in so many ways - and lets Alan's crush catch up with Ryan's notice of the sweet, family man that Alan is. I love how just a bit of angst creeps up as they play for opposing teams, but even that is mild. There's a fair amount of steam, just enough for the story without ruining the romance.
This book and this series have been such a fun read and I hope there are more stories to come!
I had caught up with all of my ARCs, requested a toooon more, and proceeded to avoid them. Oops. Here's Becca Jackson's "Totally Opposed." Its the third novel in her Love in Play series.

The mutual pining in this one was sooooo strong. I wanted to hit one (or both--why not both) of these adorable idiots with a baseball bat. LUCKILY, they figured their shit out rather quickly.
There was more angst when it came to outing themselves to their teammates (more so the Romeo and Juliet factor--and timing) and missing family (and Alan's grandfather (and Precious)). Which, I'm not mad about. I needed some relatively angst-free romance.
And I need the next book now. I'm ALL for fans getting their HEA in pure fanfic fashion.
Ryan, single again and getting over a crush on a guy who had no interest in him, realizes he has a new guy he is most certainly interested in. Sure, he is on the ‘enemy’ team, and there could be complications, but he seems to be everything he is looking for. He doesn’t want the embarrassment he had with the last guy, so he just hopes that Alan will notice him one day while he is out on the field playing Banana ball, be it his dance moves or fastball that get his attention.
Alan is looking for someone after getting over his ex, but he is also looking for his grandpa to be proud of him. Every time the man who raised him points out that what he does isn’t ‘real baseball,’ it breaks his heart a little more. While working through his family worries, he finds himself enthralled with a guy on the opposing team and gets caught by him singing his name in the shower, naked, unable to explain. It was not how he had wanted Ryan’s attention, but here they are. When they were thrust together to do opening dance numbers that were steamy, they both realized they were waiting for the other.
OPINION: This is a low-angst slice-of-life story about two guys falling hard. Most of the story revolves around the struggles that Alan faces, where Ryan is there to help him through. It’s easy to love Ryan since he is kind and steps up for everything—is it a British thing? As you navigate through their love story, it falls in place easily, and their friends and family embrace the relationship even though they are on opposing teams. Both men are good guys who are doing their best to keep their jobs, fall in love, get through personal issues, and take care of family. There are several sub-plots within the love story and a few wonderful secondary characters that add some humor. There's not a lot of spice, but a few good scenes add flavor to the narrative. This is a lovely book with some great people, not only the main MCs but also the family and friends.

Without a doubt, this author writes charming characters, this is the second book I've read by her and I'm completely happy. Ryan and Alan were pure dynamite together, from being "rivals" on the field but lovers in their privacy, their relationship was one of the most beautiful I've read. How they accepted each other and how they are, all the guys on the team (more Alan's Team) didn't give much importance to the fact that they dated, and here I will say that I really liked Alan's grandfather, his slightly grumpy personality made me smile and even more so when he had the interactions with Ryan. A story that I loved from beginning to end, super easy to read and with completely charming characters.
📌 I received an e-arc, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.
This was a really fun read. This was my first book be @beccajacksonauthor and I’ll absolutely be reading the rest of this series and then searching out other titles.
Totally Opposed is book 3 in the series, but I didn’t feel lost reading out of order. I’m sure things will make more sense when I go back and read books 1 and 2 but this was fine as a stand alone.
I didn’t know what Banana Ball was until very recently when I saw the ‘Savannah’s’ on instagram. So at least I had some idea what was going on. I love the performance aspect being added to sport, I’d definitely pay to see that.
Ryan and Alan are adorable together. Two ball players from opposing teams who from the get go have a spark with each other, but neither wants to make the first step. Ryan is a little shy after a previous unrequited love so just hopes that Alan will notice him. I loved these two, you can’t not love these two. The relationship dynamic was super sweet and supportive as they help each other with past issues, and deal with present life struggles.
The pace of the book was great, I was page turning quickly and got easily involved in the story. There were some great side characters fleshing out the plot and even a fabulously grumpy cat.
I would absolutely recommend this book as a quick, cute read with a great plot and a lots of feels. I want to find a banana ball game in Aus now.
Read if you love Low angst Fun shenanigans Ball games with dance numbers Sweet, swoony romance
I really enjoy this series and it's making me intrigued about Banana Ball. Maybe one of these days I will overcome my deep aversion to all sportsballs and actually watch a game, lol. I was very excited for the next installment in this series and it was really cute and a lot of fun. Alan and Ryan were very cute and I loved how their R&J reenactment led to a real-life romance (and fortunately did not end in both of their deaths like the OG did!) I loved Don and his demoncat Precious and I got a chuckle out of Alan's deep aversion to that poor cat. I will say, though, that the story could have been strengthened by tying up a few of the loose ends. I would have loved to see Alan overcome his fear of water and enjoy a late-night skinny-dip with Ryan in his family's ranch pool. I would have loved to see Alan and his grandfather have a discussion about Banana Ball and really see Don embrace the joy of the sport and shower Alan with support. I would have loved to see Alan join Ryan on a trip back to the UK and meet Ryan's feisty granny. It felt like there was a fair amount of build-up to a lot of these facets (especially the first two), but they never really reached a satisfying conclusion. Still, I had a lot of fun reading this book and am looking forward to Tim's story next

I was provided with an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.
This was too cute! I had never heard of Banana Ball before but oh my GOSH, it’s real!!! I had to look it up just now and found a video of a team’s musical number, I want to go to a game!!!
Everything in the game, from the musical numbers to the actual game play, was described perfectly, the whole book for that matter, and I could actually ‘see’ the whole thing in my mind as if it was in real life and I was there. It was adorable, watching the progression of Ryan and Alan’s relationship, two “star crossed lovers” from rival teams (the Funky Monkeys and Animal Control) glancing at each other when they thought the other wasn’t looking to gaining confidence as they got to know each other during their musical numbers and I especially loved that the author didn’t drag out them getting together when it was plain to see how good they were together.
This was such a cute book, the only thing I would’ve liked to see was Gramps going with the team to the ranch and for Ryan to get to go to visit his grandmother. I have a pretty good imagination though so I just mentally finished it off and I was happy. Bottom line, if you’re looking for a way to spend an enjoyable afternoon, grab this book. It has lots of steam, zero angst and no third act breakup. All pluses for me!
This is the first book by Becca Jackson I have read and I couldn’t put it down. It was such a cute short story.
Ryan and Alan were super cute. I loved how Ryan helped Alan with his fears, especially when it came to swimming. That whole situation was too much because it’s a real thing in life. When Ryan got bolder with the water, I wanted to hug him.
I about died laughing at them at the grocery store when Ryan realized Alan’s grandfather was the strange man across the way. That whole scene was too cute. And when we find out that his grandfather has been watching Ryan the whole time 😭😭 that was probably one of my top moments of the book.
I absolutely loved how Ryan cooked for Alan’s grandfather and that damn cat haha. She chooses who she wants to like. All in all, this book was super adorable.
I now need to read the first two books because I absolutely loved Duckie so much!
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
This was a fun, low angst, cute and quick read which I enjoyed. Alan and Ryan are Banana Ball players from opposing teams, who get closer to each other by doing promos and opening skits. Ryan also lives next door to Alan's grandpa and ends up helping with him and even cooking for him.
They were cute together and there was no big drama, which I appreciated. Ryan helped Alan start to get over his fear of swimming after a bad experience in his childhood. They are both single after breaking up with not so great boyfriends, and I really enjoyed how drama free they were and how naturally they fit together. Ryan felt like a caretaker with the cooking and I really enjoyed that.
I really loved all the singing and dancing they did, it was so fun. And I really loved the 2 Banana Ball teams that appeared in the book and loved the friens group. There were a couple of really funny moments and the book gave me feel good vibes. I haven't read the other books in the series yet, but that wasn't a problem while reading this book.
Definitely recommend this book between heavier reads, or if you want something fun and cute with Banana Ball and dancing.
I love this series and all the zany characters who always make appearances no matter what!
Ryan Tanner fast pitched for the Funky Monkeys has had bad luck with trying to find his perfect person and thought that his crush on fellow banana ball player Alan Beaker from the opposing team Animal Control would be unrequited but fate had other plans…
I loved how they became friends first with the help of Dennis the choreographer who made them star crossed lovers with his theme!
Ryan was such a sweetheart the way he befriended Alan’s grandfather Don and his demon cat Precious. The patience he exuded towards Alan with his fear of water and Precious the spawn of satan or so he thinks… was inspiring and heartwarming!
Their banter and friendship was the foundation to a beautiful relationship but what about the rumours flying around regarding both their team’s future…
Their chemistry was off the charts with a dynamic that suits them both down to the ground- they were made for each other…
Their story was fun, sweet and steamy with supporting teammates and family!
I look forward to Tim next…
I voluntarily received an ARC from GRR for an honest review.
I want to first start by thanking GRR for the ARC!
This was my first time reading this author; and while I loved the unique sport romance being based around Banana Ball rather than regular baseball, this story felt a little flat to me.
Alan and Ryan are on rival teams, but since banana ball is different than regular baseball, they also work together to put on a show and make the game fun for the crowd. When Ryan and Alan are partnered for a song, their feelings for one another get harder to hide. Funny enough, both men have been pinning over each other, determined the other man doesn’t notice them. Working with each other makes it harder to resist their pull, and Ryan won’t stop until Alan is his.
Overall, this was a cute, fluffy read. There wasn’t much tension, and once the two got together, that was pretty much it. All characters are fun and quirky too. I would’ve liked the epilogue to be a little more like with Ryan visiting his family or something. But if you’re looking for an easy and light read, then you’ll probably like it!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Everytime I see a video clip of banana ball game, it always makes me think of this series and the characters in these books. This series focuses on a fictional set of teams in the banana ball league but it's definitely made me look at those videos differently and realize that there is probably much more work involved for those players than what the viewer/attendee sees.
Book 3 of the series deals with Ryan and Alan who are on opposing new teams in the league. The rumors floating about the elimination of one team hang overhead of these players as Ryan and Alan are teamed up in a star crossed lovers skit. The attraction these two feel for one another develops as Ryan becomes a familiar figure to Alan's grandfather and grumpy cat and their lives become more and more meshed together with friends, teammates and family.
This is a fun low angst read and I always enjoy coming back to the series. Since tickets to a real-live banana ball game are almost impossible to score, I'm more than willing to survive on reading about it in this series!
Ryan moved to US from UK for university and ended up playing Banana Ball which he loves. He just misses his family back home. And crushes on Alan.
Alan lives with his sister, and his grandfather lives nearby as well. He loves his work, and has a crush on Ryan.
But the two of them play on opposing teams.
Ryan and Alan are signed to a continuing pre-game storyline which means working together even more.
I liked how the two fit together. Both are close to their family, and even with thousands of miles between them, Ryan thinks about his a lot. The two teams, while playing against each other, are also sort of friends. With tour and practices for pre-game performance, Ryan and Alan are becoming even closer.
Loved Alan’s grandpa and his cat!
I love this whole Banana Ball series. I have never seen a game, and honestly know nothing much about baseball either, but this series seems fun. And even if it’s pro sports, it’s not that serious.
I received an ARC, and enjoyed it so much I had to go buy the first 2 books (because, yeah, I read book #3 first). Anyhow, you can totally read the 3rd book without having read the others.
Banana Ball - first I've heard of it. It's actually a thing! I learned something (always nice).
Loved all the characters and the family feel to the whole group. Gramps and his Precious were definitely a highlight. Ryan & Alan seemed like a good fit for each other. No drama (at least between THEM) with an HEA.
This book did seem like it ended too soon, though. i was wondering how the vacation at the ranch was going to go for all of them - the book ended before that happens. Hopefully this is something that happens in the next book? And we didn't see Ryan & Alan go back to the UK to visit Ryan's relatives - again, the book ended before that happened. This would have been 5 stars if it had been longer.
Mr. Quacksalot, mile-high club, spawn of Satan, Shepherd's Pie
The Banana Ball storyline continues in this third book, "Totally Opposed", of the "Love in Play" series. This installment features Ryan Tanner of the Funky Monkeys and Alan Beaker of Animal Control. They're accompanied by their banana ball teammates, including Duckie (& Ian) and Harry (& Arlo), MCs of the previous books. They're also joined by Alan's sister, Kelly, Gramps Don, and Precious, the "cat from hell". You'll love ALL the characters.
It's lighthearted, low angst, and S-P-I-C-Y! And because the book is about banana ball, hilarity and wackiness is a given; it's abundant! Also, expect delicious meals prepared by "Granny-trained" Ryan. Surprisingly, a swimming pool is a major prop of the story.
The imagery is spectacularly descriptive and well-written. Becca Jackson has scored another grand slam. I heartily recommend this engaging, enjoyable, and satisfying book.
TOTALLY OPPOSED is the third book in the Love In Play Book series. It can be read as a standalone without issue but reads so much better if you read in the order the author intended.
Ryan and Alan both play Banana Ball and are on opposing teams. Unknowingly they have both had an interest in each other but being on opposite teams could be a problem even if no one was aware of their attraction. Until the choreographer has an idea to make them star crossed lovers doing a bunch of songs and dances together. When one kiss turns into so much more there's no turning back from the relationship they thought they were hiding (spoiler...everyone knew).
Ryan and Alan were a fun couple. They had a ton of chemistry and were so sweet with each other. Add in Alan's grandfather it was a sweet read. I love this series and can't wait for more.
I was given a free copy of this book to read and review for Gay Romance Reviews.
I'm getting into this series and now I need to know more about Banana Ball. I'm in Australia so trying to find a game to watch somewhere. This instalment in the series and was a lot of fun.
Alan and Ryan were very likeable. Loved Don and Precious Nothing like a story with a demon cat for laughs and I certainly had those when Alan was terrified of the cat it hated him but loved Ryan immediately.
Some areas could have been finalised like the swimming in the pond at the ranch but from reading the blurb for Tim's story, I think this may be covered there.
There was a bonus chapter available from Book Funnel, but I find it really annoying that I keep having to sign up for newsletters that I already get. Book Funnel should be able to recognise this and just let us read the bonus chapters.
Ryan and Alan have crushes on the other... and neither know about it. Ryan, tries to flirt without flirting too hard, but thinks Alan is completely oblivious about his intentions.. or just not interested. Alan get distracted when Ryan is in his area, but he wants to take his job serious and does not want to lose focus.
Then life happens, and they are thrown together at work, and Ryan moves in the building across from Alan's grandfather. Their life continues to cross paths and they cannot help but grow close. But to take the leap into something more may complicate their professional and private life.
Ryan and Alan were great, but grandpa, Alan's sister and the rest of the Banana Ball gang and their significant others also helped make this story fantastic. I can't wait for the next in the series!
I received an ARC from GRR and am leaving an honest review.
Brought together by the dance routines they are doing as banana ball players who get to play star-crossed lovers at the games. It helps they already had a crush on each other. They may play for opposing teams but that doesn’t stop them from playing together too.
This is a really nice story with two fun and kind guys. I enjoyed the narrative around Alan’s curmudgeonly grandfather who is also Ryan’s neighbour. Them jointly caring for and about the man really helped cement their relationship and made for some but also sweet moments.
We also get to see plenty of the rest of the teams to make us smile.
A heartwarming, low-angst, rivals-to-lovers sports romance! Ryan and Alan make a cute, wholesome couple. They have some really nice romantic moments together on their way to their HEA, building up chemistry as well as a deeper emotional connection. Ryan exudes a very wholesome boy-next-door vibe. He is easy to love and root for. He’s just what Alan needs. Alan is a bit down on his luck, living with his sister and coming out of a bad relationship. He also doesn’t feel completely supported by his family, but things do get better, with a little help from Ryan, which was lovely to read. There are a lot of great secondary characters who help create a fun, warm atmosphere. The other players and their significant others, as well as Kelly and Gramps, bring a sense of playfulness and camaraderie to the story.
Totally Opposed is a low angst, easy read. Alan and Ryan have been crushing on each other but Ryan got burned the last time he put himself out there for a guy and Alan isn’t really sure if his feelings are reciprocated. An impulsive kiss later and it’s quite obvious where things stand :)
I enjoyed seeing Ryan getting to know Alan’s grandpa and Alan opening up about some of his fears. They provide quite a few sweet moments and a chance for the two of them to grow closer.
But since there really isn’t a lot of drama or issues between them, I feel like Totally Opposed might not be for everyone. It’s perfect for those looking for a fluffy, feel good read with moments of spice and humor, tho. With this one, you come for the people and leave with all those HEA feels.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**
