Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Another case of Sherlock Holmes about a wedding and a marriage that has certain difficulties. Nothing of excellence.

In this Sherlock Holmes tale, Lord St. Simon's American wife disappeared during the wedding breakfast, right after they were married. It was a marriage of convenience: as usual for the time, the American wife gets a noble title and the English aristocrat gets a much-needed infusion of cash from her dowry. But St. Simon can't figure out why his wife Hatty suddenly vanished. Was she upset by running into his former mistress? Did Hatty's tomboy upbringing have anything to do with her disappearance?

description

It's not really one of the more memorable Holmes tales - no exciting murders or fun blood and guts - and I guessed the mystery. But it's somewhat interesting for its dealing with the once-popular social practice of American heiresses marrying British nobility. I appreciated the description of Lord St. Simon as having the “steady, well-opened eye of a man whose pleasant lot it had ever been to command and to be obeyed.” And I got a kick out of this statement by Sherlock Holmes (which I assume reflects Arthur Conan Doyle's opinion back in the 1880's):
“It is always a joy to meet an American, Mr. Moulton, for I am one of those who believe that the folly of a monarch and the blundering of a minister in far-gone years will not prevent our children from being some day citizens of the same world-wide country under a flag which shall be a quartering of the Union Jack with the Stars and Stripes.”
An interesting suggestion that I’ve never heard before!

This engaging and entertaining story reflects the curious paradox about Holme's personality - he has become a connoisseur of female psychology having investigated multiple disappearances of brides. However, he has never contemplated of having one himself:)

The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor turns out to be one of the easiest cases for Sherlock Holmes to deal with; with the detective having dealt with similar problems in the past. Indeed, Holmes had solved the case even before the client, Lord St Simon, has departed from Baker Street.

The basic problem is that Hatty Doran, the new wife of Lord St Simon, has disappeared, and foul play is suspected. Some suspicion is placed on Lord St Simon, as he had a financial motive, but also suspected is an old flame of Lord St Simon, Flora Miller.

Holmes offers a full explanation to Inspector Lestrade, but just as in the case of The Boscombe Valley Mystery, the detective doesn’t take Holmes seriously, so Holmes feels empowered to deal with the case in the best way he sees fit.

The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor is an example of where a case for Sherlock Holmes doesn’t necessarily mean that there is a crime, and this is perhaps why the story is less memorable than many others within the Conan Doyle canon of works.

The story was adapted by Granada Television, with Jeremy Brett starring as Sherlock Holmes. The episode, titled The Eligible Bachelor, made a number of plot changes, something which was strange for the television, which normally kept close to the original storylines.

Again and again, nothing special.
An arrogant lord, an undecided (and here I am too nice...) woman, a very convenient scrap of paper. That's all, at least for your humble servant...

5 stars & 5/10 hearts. This is a light short story with a good mystery and reeking with humour. Holmes really shows his sarcasm here. All the characters are so interesting; the plot was delightfully and surprisingly fresh; and of course Lestrade was awesome. 😝 I absolutely love watching Holmes deal with him. And he was just as epic bringing Lord St. Simon down a peg, yet sympathizing with him… another glimpse of the real Sherlock. ;)

A Favourite Quote: “The case has been an interesting one … because it serves to show very clearly how simple the explanation may be of an affair which at first sight seems to be almost inexplicable. Nothing could be more natural than the sequence of events as narrated by this lady, and nothing stranger than the result when viewed, for instance, by Mr. Lestrade of Scotland Yard.”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “Those are all the notices which appeared before the disappearance of the bride.”
“Before the what?” asked Holmes with a start.
“The vanishing of the lady.”
“When did she vanish, then?”
“At the wedding breakfast.”
“Indeed. This is more interesting than it promised to be; quite dramatic, in fact.”
“Yes; it struck me as being a little out of the common.”
“They often vanish before the ceremony, and occasionally during the honeymoon; but I cannot call to mind anything quite so prompt as this. Pray let me have the details.”
“I warn you that they are very incomplete.”
“Perhaps we may make them less so.”

3 Stars. A dissatisfactory episode all around - for Holmes and Watson, for the other characters, and for this reader too. It started with a scandal in London four years earlier - a lord marrying a commoner, an American to boot, with the woman, Hatty Doran, disappearing between the wedding and the reception! Tongues wagged. Dr. Watson decided to fill in the blanks. The 33-pager first came out in 'The Strand' in 1892; I read it in 'Sherlock Holmes The Complete Novels and Stories,' a two-volume work from 2020. It starts with Lord St. Simon writing Holmes and asking for an appointment. He refers to the wedding and notes that Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard is already involved in some fashion. Intriguing. Watson pulls out the news clippings. Those were the days of newspapers galore and he had to check a dozen! Two incidents occurred at the wedding. The bride stumbled during the ceremony and seemed to be surprised by one of the guests in the seats, and an outsider, a woman named Flora Millar, made an unsettling scene just before the reception. Then the bride vanished. I found double standards oozing from every pore of the story. (Jun2021/Ja2025)

"The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor" is the tenth story in the The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes story collection, the third publication in the Sherlock Holmes series (after the first two novels, so the first story collection).

Holmes is hired by a man whose brand new wife disappeared mysteriously mere hours after their wedding ceremony.

Not one of my favourites from this collection, but still a good and interesting story.

This one was pretty good, though predictable. I figured out the solution/ending quicker than Sherlock, and this is one I hadn't read previously.

Holmes is asked to discover why a young American bride, who'd just married a titled, but fairly poor member of the nobility...

(This was a fairly common occurrence in late 1800's England. Witness the marriage, in Downton Abbey, of Lord Grantham, Robert Crawley to Cora Levinson, daughter of an American millionaire in 1890. Yes, it's fiction, but based on what was happening at the time. Titled, but poor Brit marries common but wealthy American heiress.)

...takes off right after the wedding. Yes, a runaway bride is the central conundrum in this particular tale. Why'd she do it? Where is she? What's the answer?

Well, Holmes figures it out with only a few key facts at hand, surely showing his genius intellect early and quickly in this tale.

But I found it kind of ordinary. Three stars.

Well...this was very bland and unexciting. I didn't care for the mystery or the characters. I tend to hate know-it-all plot convenience characters, so you can say I didn't like Sherlock too.

Another case solved with panache by the great detective Sherlock Holmes.
I love the way he picks up on obscure clues and works out the solution with an air of superiority. But always trying to reconcile and be just.

Lestrade: "They have been identified as her clothes, and it seemed to me that if the clothes were there the body would not be far off."

Holmes: "By the same brilliant reasoning, every man's body is to be found in the neighbourhood of his
wardrobe."

Loved the spat between these two, it sure was entertaining :)
