Fleur Nine years. That’s how long I spent in a relationship wasted on my ex.
When my world crumbles apart in front of me, I make a desperate escape. Only now, I’m stuck in a tiny Mississippi town with a dilapidated farmhouse I don’t know how to fix.
Enter Adam, the town’s contractor. Finding solace in his expertise and kindness, he might just be the one to help me rebuild more than just my home. But beneath the town’s quaint facade lies a darkness: an untouchable drug lord whose operation has poisoned the very place I now call home.
Then there’s him—a man who commands attention with his rugged allure and infuriating motorcycle. Our encounters are surprising, hinting at something beyond his dangerous exterior and intriguing me in ways I can't ignore.
Riddled in debt and drugs, the sanctuary I sought for safety may very well be the ruin of me. One thing’s for certain: running away was only the beginning.
Debt of My Soul is a small town, organized crime novel with a signature slow burn, closed-door/fade-to-black romance. Please read TW/CW.
K.P. Haven is an avid romance reader who writes the gritty, fade-to-black romances she wants to read. She lives in a small, southern town with her husband and three children and enjoys slow mornings, reading, and mint chocolate chip ice cream.
This was the first book I’ve read by K.P. Haven and I love it. The tension between the MMC & FFC was so thick, I felt physical relief when it finally broke. The story was perfect. There were no plot holes that I could point out to you. I was on the edge of my seat for a majority of the book. I can’t wait to see if the end might have been a clue as to what’s being written next.
Also, if this ever becomes a movie and Charlie Hunnam doesn’t play Liam… 🥵
addictive, gritty, great tension without explicit spice

4.25/5⭐️ 🚪*fade to black (spice) 2/3🦋 (swoon)
•My Thoughts• What a wild ride! This was a true slow burn with so much story and constant action. I devoured it! I loved our main characters and their stories. Both are dealing with so much and I loved their connection and ability to just *be* together. This book was chaotic in the best of ways - messy past relationship, a very minor love triangle, lots of drama and plenty of heart pounding moments. I couldn’t look away! This was motorcycle club vibes (they’re NOT a motorcycle club, OK? IYKYK), with a little bit of mafia and some small town charm and the combination absolutely worked. The romance was gritty and I loved that it was fade to black so that the story took first place. I did want a few more moments showing the softer, easier side to their relationship but this book’s focus was definitely on the craziness that drew them together. It’s definitely got some dark themes with a small town controlled by a crime lord and a look into the world of drugs and violence so please check content warnings.
The perfect slump busting recommendation! So excited to add more of this author to my TBR.
Content Warnings: drug use, violence, attempted sexual assault, cheating (not between MCs)
The number of times I swooned in this dark and gritty mafia romance is just ridiculous 🫠 But, I mean, if you throw in a ‘take her capt!ve to protect her’ plus add in a caretaking trope with sweet tender moments… I’m a goner. This is the perfect read for dark romance girlies who also love a little taste of that small town feel. Honestly, I’m probably going to turn around and reread this immediately.

After a failed 9 year relationship, Fleur moves to Ruin, Mississippi for a fresh start, unaware of the underlying pulse of organized crime that runs through the small town.
And him? Well I can’t talk much about him without giving you spoiler after spoiler, but know that you’ll LOVE him.
What do you need to know? Well this is an incredibly written, dark, gritty, organized crime romance. It’s full of deep healing and redemption for our main couple, but the road to get there is one that will have you gasping and on the edge of your seat.

A note on the attempted sexual assault- this is slightly graphic but extremely plot important. Nothing fully undressed below the belt occurs. Hard to read, but very well written.
This is not a light and fluffy story. In the same way that Sons of Anarchy, Ozarks, and Breaking Bad are hard to watch sometimes, but you love them for their gritty darkness. Their story is one of deep and fought for love, through the kinds of trials most of us can’t imagine as real life. The writing is fantastic and K.P. Haven continues to be an autobuy author for me.
The way this man loves Fleur. That’s its own topic. The way she loves him back? Expressively? Intentionally? GAH. more of this!!
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Thank you K.P. Haven for the ARC copy! I enjoyed every second of it. I was not required to leave a positive review.
I really enjoyed this story and loved watching the relationship unfold between Fleur and Liam. If you are a Sons of Anarchy fan, you will like this book. I look forward to reading the books on Lily and River!
“Debt of My Soul" was an incredibly gripping and intense read! I loved how the story gradually pulled me in, leaving me with so many questions, and then suddenly—boom!—the action kicked in. Fleur is such a relatable character; she’s confused and vulnerable but also brave and strong.
Liam is fantastic as well, with his words, care for Fleur and his brother, and his restraint in such stressful situations - perfect! Their first kiss? 🔥 It was a pivotal moment that perfectly captured their growing connection. Overall, this book is a wonderful blend of emotion and suspense that kept me hooked from start to finish! So excited to read about Lily and River next!
This was a fantastic, emotional, angsty slow burn. The characters felt so real to me, and I connected with them and needed to know what was going to happen.
While this is a fade-to-black romance, Haven does a wonderful job at creating tension, emotion and strong chemistry between characters.
I thought the story was really interesting and there were a few surprises along the way too. It is a longer read, but I think the book gets away with it because of the strong plot.
I cannot wait to read the next book and I highly recommend this one!
Please note that there are warnings to check for this one.
Obsessed. This was like a darker Steel King by Devney Perry meets mafia meets crime thriller. I couldn’t put it down. The small town vibes were hitting perfectly. Fleur and Liam were dynamic characters (even though at times I wanted to sleep some sense in Fleur lol). I’m gonna be honest, Darrin and River has very few moments in this book but they stole the show every time they were present. The tension, the history, the MYSTERY. I am frothing at the mouth for their story. The climax had me on the edge of my seat because I was so invested in this story and these characters. Also, Adam can go kick rocks. I really hope he gets what’s coming to him. The ending was perfect and the epilogue was amazing!! So so good
Where do I begin. I adored this book from start to finish. This was my first K.P. Havens book and will definitely will not be my last. Debt of My Soul captured me and kept me on the edge of my seat. If I had no responsibilities, I would have binged this book in one sitting. I did not want to put it down. If is content in which you want to avoid, I highly recommend checking out the authors content warning. Debt of My Soul is not a light fluffy read. It gets very gritty and deals with many dark situations (CW below). The dark content is not glorified or made to look positive. Anytime you include organized crime into entertainment, things can take a dark twist and that is real world.
I adore Fleur and Liam and really hope there will be more added to their story. I was not ready for it to end. I don't want to reveal too much of the plot. I truly think readers need to experience the unfolding of their love for themselves. K.P Haven has created characters with so much depth, which is reveled slowly through the book at perfect pace with the plot.
Thank you so much to K.P. Haven for the ARC. I truly appreciate the opportunity to read your work. An ARC of Debt of My Soul was given in exchanged for and honest review. I was halfway through the book when I decided I had to preorder a physical copy to reread later.
Some of my Favorite Non-Spoiler Quotes: -The Black Vest, broody behavior, and the reaction from the locals in the shop all tell me the same thing. What it doesn't tell me - I rub where his body collided with mine - is why my skin tingles even after he's long gone. -Claws embedded so deep I fear yanking them out. Or perhaps ripping them out for Adam would leave gaping holes he wasn't qualified to heal. Would anyone be? -Our encounters are surprising, hinting at something beyond his dangerous exterior and intriguing me in ways I can't ignore. - She is pure light, and the thought of any of us looking at her might taint her soul scares me. -How can this man do what he does, be who he is, and still show this side of himself? -The ghost of Liam's hand lingers on the small of my back much longer than it's actually there. -How can this feel so right when it was born out of something so wrong? -Unless you tell me otherwise, I'm here always.
Trigger Warning: Moderate language, kidnapping, death/violence/torture, drug abuse, organized crime, self-harm, attempted SA, cheating (not by MCs), Fade to black (no explicit sexual content), drug use/addiction (not by MCs). Just remember this book centers around an organized crime operations and many of the items listed are part of the lifestyle. They are needed to understand the setting and circumstances.
Because there are some darker themes in Debt of My Soul, I wanted to include the TW/CW first, just as the author has done.
CW/TW: Moderate language, k!dnapping, attempted SA, de@th/v!olence, drug abuse, organized crime, self h@rm and cheating (not by MCs).
Overall I REALLY loved Debt of My Soul! Fleur and Liam are so perfectly paired together and I was so happy to watch their love unfurl. When the author says it’s a slow burn, she MEANS slow burn! The tension between these two had me on the edge of my seat.
And while the content is darker, it’s never shown as something good. In all of her books, the organized crime is always seen as something that’s evil and sometimes, in order for characters to survive, they’ve been embroiled in it. It’s a deep look into the dangers of this world and yet despite all of that, love still prevails.
It reminded me a lot of the world we live in today. That even though all of these bad things exist, we can still find love and cling to it.
As far as the characters go, Fleur and I had a lot in common as far as anxiety and pain goes. I read this during a time when my anxiety was at an all time high. And seeing Fleur manage to get through the hard times actually brought me comfort and showed me that I can do it too.
Liam is the perfect blend of strength and broodiness and I just LOVED him. All of the author’s MMCs are all so powerful and dangerous, but when it comes to their loves, they have a tenderness towards them. Just smitten!
Five stars for me! Read if you love:
Sons of Anarchy Slow burn 🔥 Dual POV Broody MMC Forced marriage Fade to black
Liam is no Luka but when this scene come on…”Bringing his mouth to my ear, he whispers, “Did you kiss my brother?” I scowl, tilting my head away from where his warm breath practically licks the side of my face. His brother is the furthest thing on my mind. Why does he care? As if he can read the question in my eyes, he continues, “Because I’m going to snuff out any memory of him.” I was flat out on my back! GIIIRRRRLLL! The way I swooned.
KP Haven is my favorite author now. She gets the tension, the feels, everything I need in a closed door romance she does it & more!
I will be honest, this was not my favorite book written by her. It was confusing in some spots and I found it kind of hard to follow, hence the 4 star. Sometimes it felt like the words didn’t belong. Probably just me though. Regardless I still binge read this book. I liked how Liam, despite his outward roughness brought Fleur out of her comfort zone & healed her in ways that couldn’t have been healed without going through what they did. When Liam showed his sweet side he was beyond, but it didn’t show a lot of that since he was playing a part 99.9% of the time. I wish there were more moments of Liam & Fleur after all the drama went down.
Ps: I really wanted to punch Adam in the face 99.9% of the time, even before knowing what a crappy brother/son/friend/etc he was.
I can’t wait for Darrin & River’s story, plus I think Lily & Raven had something going on (or maybe she’s with him!)
🏘Small Town Suspense 🫂Forced Proximity 💍Forced Marriage 💔Dislike to Love 🏍MC Vibes
✨️Review A very well written small town suspense, Sons of Anarchy vibes closed-door romance! The closed-door is handled with wonderful allusion though, and with subtly spicy sweet beginnings. Story is very much at the forefront here, and honestly that is always what's most important. I want to connect and care about these characters and I most definitely did here!
It starts off as a more typical small town heroine on the run and finding a handsome local handyman, but , boy do things quickly evolve inti a direction you wouldnt expect. And those things include a mercurial, blonde-bunned, tatooed tall drink of water named Liam.
I absolutely loved Liam and how he's more than meets the eye. We get a bit of mystery to solve with him. Truly a heart of gold, a protector, gentle but very capable. He puts so much at stake for those he cares about, even at the expense of losing parts of his soul. That is what really made this story stand out to me.
We get some bursts of action, some delicious push-pull between the tender hearted Fleur and the "more than meets the eye" Liam. And there's some especially intriguing side characters...namely Darrin. I am super excited to read about him and Rivers story next....the man with the dual colored eyes and secrets of his own.
This book was AWESOME! So much was unexpected. This book has SO many layers. Where you start is not going to be where you end up. It kept me guessing all the way THROUGH the last chapter. It was deep and emotional. Debt of my Soul is dark and gritty.... If you're looking for a small-town hallmark romance, this is NOT for you. Think Ozark vs Hallmark. It contains adult themes, but it fades to black. There is mild language, but it doesn't distract from the story.
After reading K.P. Haven's earlier Mafia books, I expected this to be dark and morally gray, but WOW! This book was so much more! I cannot wait for her to come out with her next book. I think K.P. Haven might be my new favorite author!
Some of my FAVORITE quotes:
"I wanted to gouge his eyes out for even looking at her. She is pure light, and the thought any of us looking at her might taint her soul scares me."
"Relief shines in her eyes, and I’m worried about all the things I’d do to see peace on her face again."
"There are zero people here I trust, but maybe I distrust _____ a little less."
"when you’re a mother your heart hurts when your children suffer"
"It takes me twice as long to fold the towels from the dryer because each warm, fuzzy towel calls for a hug."
"I’ve given everything for ______, and he hates me for it."
Fleur runs to a small town in Mississippi to start over after her boyfriend of 9 years betrays her. Ruin, Mississippi is not what Fleur expects, and she quickly becomes entangled in organized crime. Fleur is in over her head and now fighting for her life.
Debt of My Soul is a dark small-town romance that's pretty intense for most of the book. The group, which is like a motorcycle club (but not a motorcycle club), lacks the moral code of conduct that other authors usually give their main group of supporting characters. This makes the book grittier and more real. The romance between Fleur and Liam is sort of enemies to lovers with forced proximity, and as they start to have feelings for each other, they must keep their feelings secret. Most of the characters are morally grey and well-developed. Fleur and Liam's story is wrapped up, but I see another book in the future with different characters. Debt of My Soul caused me some anxiety (even though rationally I knew Fleur would be fine), and it was a page-turner. I read it fairly quickly, and it's a 5 star book!
This is such a good book; I could not put it down!
This is not your fluffy small-town romance. This is an emotional story about Fleur, who escapes to a small southern town after a traumatic end to a nine-year relationship in hopes of rebuilding her life and who she is. She soon realizes that this quiet town has secrets involving the drug trade and gambling. Fleur’s attempt to regain control of her life is futile as she finds herself right in the middle of it all.
This was my first book by Haven and I loved it!! This had all the tropes I love in a fantasy in this well-written contemporary romance novel. I’m not a fluffy, hallmark-style romance reader, I love some good emotional trauma and this one delivered. The situations she was put in and the emotions she felt were believable, making me suffer right along with Fleur (though I think I was most upset about the house).
Though this is not what I would call a "spicy" romance, don't think there isn’t great tension and well-written fade-to-black scenes!
I read this book as an ARC and I am so glad I did! It exceeded all my expectations. It’s a romance but with a whole lot of suspense and angst. It follows Fleur, who recently moved into town and bought is fixer upper after breaking up with her long time boyfriend. She initially meets a local contractor Adam who seems nice enough. But who wants to settle for just nice? Especially when she meets Liam, who instantly grabs her attention. She doesn’t know how to feel about him. He’s a mystery riding with a “motorcycle club” although there is more to this “club” than meets the eye. Without giving anything away, Fleur finds herself tangled with a whole lot of circumstances that lead her down through a road filled with danger and mystery. I read this book so quickly. I could not put it down and ended up finagling around 3am! It’s suspenseful and will have your stomach in knots but the pull between the mc’s will have you rooting for them! I won’t say more - grab this book and find out how amazing K.P. Haven’s writing is! Thank you so much for the ARC opportunity!
As a Mississippian, this was such a neat setting to imagine. Of course, Ruin is a fictitious town but it was easy to imagine it being similar to Natchez, Mississippi. The main character Fleur was likable enough but there was definitely “damsel in distress” energy throughout. Near the end, I did notice the character development however when she started becoming more outspoken and defensive of what she wanted.
My only complaint is that the first 40% of the book moves slowly. At the 60% mark, things speed up quite a bit. The ending is not groundbreaking or surprising but the outcome was satisfactory. Some characters could have used a bit more development or backstory (River, Adam, Darrin) but for the length of this book, it was enough.
Spice level, this is a mere seasoning of black pepper but it was all part of the slow burn. Imagination is fun sometimes! 😂 Haven keeps things PG-13 which isn’t a surprise after reading “Heritage of Fire” and “Heritage of Blood.” There’s even a little Easter egg in this book about Luka Morozov, which made me smile.
This is not a romance book, it has romance elements and yes you get your happy ending but the book is way more complex than first meets the eye. I don’t think I’ve ever disliked a character as much as I disliked Adam! He was so infuriating and entitled with no redeemable qualities in my opinion. As for Liam and Fleur, what a complex beginning to their story. Some of the scenes were hard to read as they showcased some difficult elements. Overall a good read, full of drama with a twist, and a romantic ending! This is my fourth read for this author and I’m pleasantly surprised by her storytelling! Cant wait for Lily and Rivers stories (more so River as I’m intrigued about her history with Darrin).
Side note: it’s not explicitly said but Darrin is described as having dark skin and for his role in the story one could say the author played on a stereotype. Especially for story set in a small town and where all the other characters are implied to be white. This just left me with some questions and wondering as to the thoughts behind that aspect of the story/ writing.
Fleur moves to a small town called Ruin after her nine-year relationship crumbles. She first meets Adam, a contractor who pushes his way into helping her remodel her house. Adam is not shy about letting Fleur know he is interested in more than friendship. However, Fleur is not yet ready to jump into a relationship.
Then there is Liam. He runs around with the local drug lord, yet Fleur's employers seem to like him while they bristle at her mention of Adam.
When Fleur first met Adam, I thought, "Please don't let him be the love interest." The guy came across as a tool, and then lived up to the reputation.
Liam, on the other hand, while appearing to be the bad guy, was actually the white knight in disguise.
I loved Liam for Fleur.
I do recommend reading the trigger warnings. While Liam is only portrayed as the bad guy, some of the men are real tossers. They are grimy and leave you with an ick feeling, and you really feel for Fleur. There is SA in the book, and while it is not a fully fledged assault, it is enough that in real life, you could still press charges.
This book was so much more than I thought it would be! The storytelling behind it brings you in and really connects you with the characters. Fleur and Liam’s story has so much depth to it, and I couldn’t get enough of it. The tension was so thick in the beginning, but the curiosity on both sides made the relationship bloom beautifully. Both had so much pain in their lives before they were introduced, and you could feel the healing between them.
Also, there’s just something about the dichotomy between a tough motorcycle man and the sweet side he only shows to the one he cares about, talk about swooooooooon. 🖤
The tropes 🌼 small town 🌼 organized crime 🌼 forced marriage 🌼 SLOW BURN 🌼 MC vibes 🌼 “who did this to you?!” 🌼 forced proximity 🌼 dual POV 🌼 fade-to-black
The tension that K.P. Haven is able to build in her novels is palpable and real. I was not expecting the semi-love triangle that truly brought the drama! Fleur was pretty frustrating in the beginning—just going along with whatever even when it felt wrong. I wanted to shake some sense into her. Alas, if she wasn’t like that we wouldn’t have a story!
This novel is fade-to-black but it gets really steamy before the fade. It also covers some rough topics. Readers should use their personal discretion before diving in!
You’ll want to read this one if you’re into: -Slow Burns 🔥 -Forced Marriage -Small Town -Organized Crime -Forced Proximity -Dual POV
TW/CW are available on Haven’s website or in the beginning of the novel! You can find this & Haven’s other novels on Kindle Unlimited! 🩷
I was not disappointed. Debt of My Soul was a well-paced slow burn romance with fade-to-black scenes. This was an emotional ride that made me reflect on it for days. I was speechless and heartbroken about what Fleur experienced. Quickly, I felt connected to her and very invested in the outcome of the story.
This is my second novel by K.P. Haven and again, I enjoyed the fantastic storytelling. The dual POV was significant in contributing to the weight of the secrets and plot twists and highlighting the tension between characters. The action scenes left me tense and breathless. The suspense kept me reading instead of sleeping. The plot twists blew my mind. I had certain suspicions but didn't predict how this story actually progressed.
I can't say more and risk spoilers. There are trigger/content warnings on the author's website and in the book to prepare you for certain issues. This is a gritty story with dark themes because organised crime is involved, but those aspects are not romanticized.
I read Debt of My Soul prior to starting K.P. Haven's next release, Give Her Time, which I was also so excited to devour. Both novels were 5 star reads.
Darrin and River’s book exists? When? how ? I need it now! That bonus epilogue was EVERYTHING! My girl Fleur was so judgmental and awful, for someone “hurt” by life, she was a horrible person towards Liam. Honestly, she deserved all the bad things that happened to her and more. Liam deserved better!!! That poor man, I swear! I love the "mystery" present in the story. I love that their relationship wasn't simply imposed and that it wasn’t Insta-love. The slow burn was perfect; when the time came for them to be together, it was beautiful and exactly what the story needed. The truth is, I expected bad things for Adam. I'll never understand how Fleur and Liam kept going home as if nothing had happened. Those parents were awful!
YES! YES! YES! What a fantastic book! This is a perfect blend of touch her and d!e, MC, organized crime, forced marriage and slow burn. I liked Fleur's character and how strong she is through all the unexpected challenges she faces when she escapes her hometown to start a new life in Ruin, Mississippi. Her resilience, growth and mental health rep throughout the story gave her a unique level of depth. I absolutely loved Liam's character so much throughout this entire book. I appreciated his gradual introduction into the plot line which added a little hint of mystery and intrigue to his character. The plot twists in this book left me at the edge of my seat on numerous occasions and I was completely engrossed in the story towards the middle and end. This book is a MUST read!
Debt of My Soul is a dark romance that is filled with suspense, angst, passion, and twists that keep you on the edge of your seat.
The characters are absolutely compelling - Fleur is someone who you were immediately drawn to because of her independence, sharp wit, and strong headedness. Liam is the embodiment of bad boy who has an unwavering resolve and a secret of his own. The slow burn and tension between them makes their chemistry shine.
If you love, small town, forced marriage, slow burn, morally grey hero, and forced proximity, this book will not disappoint!
The one line that had me hooked, line and sinker… “Is there a name that goes with that mouth?”🫠
Debt of My Soul is an intense, dramatic read from K.P. Haven filled with chemistry and heart. I've read her other books and have come to enjoy this gritty/clean genre with characters that are a little rough around the edges and where lives aren't perfect. I like the character growth and development and experiencing the pains and journey right alongside the characters. Fleur and Liam and so great together and I enjoyed reading as their story unfolded. There are heavy topics and the bad guys are pretty bad, so read accordingly but I enjoyed this story and am a fan of K.P. Haven's work and am here for all of it!
Some segments felt like they went on longer than necessary. While I wished more time was spent on developing their relationship, it does make sense that it wasn’t realistic for them to be able to spend tons of time together (for common sense reasons and for spoiler reasons).
I did like how both MCs felt the inexplicable immediate interest in the other, and I did not have a problem at all with how the slow burn progressed.
I think overall it just felt too heavy, meaning it didn’t have enough lighter moments to balance out the gritty parts. Her mafia duet & spinoff felt more balanced in that way so I could rate them higher.
This is my second book by this author, after reading Heritage of Blood and overall, I think this is my favorite book of the year!! This book had everything you could possibly want- a detailed and interesting story, slow burn, strong main characters, and suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat!
After finding her boyfriend having an affair with a younger woman, Fleur finds the first town that seems quiet and settles there as she tries to navigate fixing up her rental. There she meets Adam, "a too good to be true contractor" and Liam, the brother of Adam who is seemingly involved with an organized crime group . Interestingly enough, not all is what it seems in this town. When the reason behind why Liam is involved comes to light, it makes total sense. He is a protector! I loved seeing the relationship between Liam and Fleur develop. At first it is for convenience and safety but overtime they draw strength from each other and lean on one another. There is so much trust and healing between them! I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book, especially the beginning of the book when Fleur was kidnapped. This book just flowed so well and I could not stop reading it! I cannot say enough good things about it and would recommend it to anyone that loves a good romantic suspense! I don't want to say too much and give anything away so pick up this book December 17th!
