Collin
I was warned not to leave my werewolf pack—that doing so would turn my wolf into a murderous rogue, but I didn’t listen.
So now I live in the shadows, fighting to control my beast who’s developed an insatiable thirst for human blood. I don’t always succeed, which means the Supernatural Forces are out to euthanize me.
But then I see Brianna…
She calls to something deep inside me. Something I thought I'd lost.
Even though my beast craves her death, my heart aches for her to save my soul, so I take her for my own.

Brianna
For weeks, something’s been … off. I can’t explain it, but it’s as if I’m being watched.
Suddenly, I’m snatched off the street and thrown in a trunk by a terrifying man who shifts into a wolf.
Even though I fight Collin at every turn, something pulls me to his broken soul. We’re drawn to each other, and my touch may be enough to heal his beast’s psychotic mind, but the Supernatural Forces doesn’t believe in second chances, and the SF always catches the rogue werewolves.
When they do, if I can’t stop them ... they’ll kill him.

I think my expectations got the better of me. I'm still new to the anti-hero hype so I was excited when this book was announced. I wanted Collin redeemed. My problem with it all was that he had to become a completely different person to have that happen. I wanted the snarky, dark, and witty Collin we met in Angel In Embers to get redeemed. I didn't want him to have to transform into someone else entirely to have a chance at that redemption. Am I making any sense? I swear this was easier to explain in my head.

I also didn't really like Brianna all that much. As much as she tried to fight for Collin she barely made a dent. She and Collin didn't really have much in common aside from the mates thing. I think I saw Collin with a sassier woman who would/could put him in his place, literally *wink, wink*.

The Collin we meet in this novel was half out of his mind due to his past decisions. The first half of this novel was so interesting because of his erratic and unpredictable actions. After that though, he calms so far down that he doesn't resemble either version of himself.

The last 3 hours or so of this book were h*ll. All that powerlessness that I felt with Collin's situation and how no one could do anything to help him in any meaningful way was so frustrating. I disliked that what eventually "saved" him were two miracles. Let me tell you one thing about me: Miracles and the stories I read don't go together. That was yet another disappointing turn this story took.

Overall, I still continue to love the universe the author built around these characters and the Supernatural Community series as a whole. I'm still excited about the spin-off series with different characters in this same world coming later in the year. I'm hoping this was a one-off and that I'll enjoy future books in this universe!

The Audio Book:

The female narrator sounded like she was 12 years old and it only made my dislike of Brianna worse as the novel progressed. The male narrator was VERY into his role. As a voice actor, he gets a 10/10 from me. Though his female voices left a lot to be desired. There were no weird noises in the background of this recording.

"My heart aches. It fucking aches. Who would have thought that I would meet my mate this way? That I'd kidnap her, hurt her, nearly kill her? It's so fucked up on so many levels that I don't know how I'll ever make this right."

5 stars!!

Holy freaking hotness, this book surprised me in the absolute best way possible! I was craving a steamy and angsty shifter romance and found this standalone by Krista Street, so I decided to dive right in. This book had everything that I was looking for in a shifter romance; Collin was a possessive and domineering alpha (my favorite type of angsty hero) while Brianna was such a strong and feisty heroine, and I just loved them together.

The story itself was fast-paced and kept me hooked and teary-eyed the entire way through. The last half was my favorite part as Krista kept me on the edge of my seat with all of the twists she throws at Collin and Brianna as they struggle to form a future together. I loved the chemistry and dynamic between Collin and Bri, and the sexy scenes between them were so STEAMY! I will definitely be reading more from Krista, starting with Daria and Logan's series ♡

I’ll admit, I was a little hesitant at first. I thought it would be a story about a girl falling in love with her captor, basic case of Stockholm Syndrome. WRONG! It was so much more than that! The character development, witty banter between the characters, oh, and don’t forget the steamy scenes, was everything I could ask for. It kept me on the edge of my seat, dying to know how it ended. You won’t be disappointed!

four stars

Beast of Shadows is one of the best shifter romances i’ve read this year, if not the past few years. that being said although the highs were quite high but when it was low, it was also quite low. what i did appreciate about it: a werewolf who was adorable (i never thought i’d use this word to describe a hero in a shifter book honestly) and attractive, a heroine who was not a complete idiot (you never know with shifter books also honestly), and an enticing set up that keeps the plot interesting.

where it started to drag for me was towards the end; i didn’t like the way things wrapped up — i felt like Collin and Brianna barely had any time together in the last twenty percent of the book, and i ended up skimming some of these parts. this book does feel its length, but most of it was wonderful enough that even though on enjoyment alone i would have given this three-point-five stars, i’m so thoroughly impressed with how well it compares to others of its genre i couldn’t not give it four.

Maybe 3.5 rounded up? Idk I liked some things and didn’t like some things. Didn’t like this one as much as I did the Supernatural Institute series with Avery and Wyatt

This was a stunning paranormal standalone romance (and those are very hard to find)! I’m a longtime fan of Krista Street, but this was definitely her best book by a wide margin. Even though none of her previous books were truly lacking, any slight issues I had with her other stories were completely resolved in this one. I really connected with the characters in this novel, and I felt the connection they had with one another as well. Collin was the perfect brooding hero—with enough jagged edges to make his redemption heartwarming and emotionally satisfying, but not so broken that I questioned his viability as the hero or became annoyed by his woe-is-me attitude. I was initially suspicious of how much I’d enjoy a book where the hero wanted to eat the heroine—literally—but that issue was easily resolved for me (and you’ll see why when you read this book yourself).

The story was perfectly paced with an emphasis on emotional connection, rather than a rush based on lust. The dual POV really helped with this. I love that Street decided to give the hero’s perspective, when she usually just focuses on the heroine. And I did enjoy the heroine in this novel, though she was much fiercer than Street’s previous leading ladies. Speaking of past leading ladies, it was great to get a glimpse of Daria and her happiness in her relationship with Logan.

If I had any complaint, it would be that I don’t know how pleased I am with the final result of Collin’s encounter with the SF (trying not to spoil anything here). It seemed to work for Collin and Brianna, but I don’t think I would see it as a total win in my way of thinking.

This book was a heartbreaking, romantic, and suspenseful story of redemption. While it was slightly darker than I’m used to from Street, this wasn’t a negative for me; in fact, it served to improve the emotional complexity and depth of the story. I truly admired these characters and their journey, and I absolutely recommend this novel to other readers who enjoy paranormal romance.

*I received an ARC of this novel. This is my complete and honest review.*

I really, really enjoyed this one! First, I loved that this story illustrated a TRUE anti-hero! This guy wasn't like those anti-heroes in other books who Collin had me wondering how the hell he could be redeemed. How the hell would any woman, including our heroine, love someone like him? Krista made it happen though, as the story kept going I was rooting for his redemption and I was rooting for their forever after!

Next, all the themes explored were so strong and well-thought out that the complexities/gray areas of life just leaped off the pages for me. The only reason why I didn't love this story was that I didn't like having to read through some events in order to see their corresponding conflicts resolved. In other words, I was impatient and couldn't care less about some of the finer details (especially since some conflicts happened because of poor decision making, major pet peeve for me). For this reason, I skimmed through teeny bits at the beginning, middle, and end.

However, even though I didn't completely love this story, I enjoyed it so much that I know I'll be thinking about it in the coming days.

A difficult storyline

The beginning of this book was hard to read. This is the story of a werewolf that has gone rogue. There is no question that he is a brutal killer. He then stalks and kidnaps a woman. Turns out, the reason he was attracted to her is that she’s his mate. So you are reading a book about a woman attracted to a psychotic killer. It’s an interesting concept. And the author does not gloss over the difficulty that the heroine wrestles with because of this. I actually thought that this part of the book lasted too long. On the other hand- after awhile I was very invested in their relationship and his recovery. The last third of the book was the best though. I actually couldn’t put the book down. My only complaint there is that it turns out the hero was a total douche before he turned rogue. I could have done without that. There was enough to overcome without that.

This definitely was not my favorite book but I give the author credit for somehow getting me invested in redeeming the hero. The world is interesting. In fact, I would have preferred more of the story to take place in the supernatural world. Overall I would say good writing, but difficult storyline. It’s not for everyone.

Did not finish.

I tried, but gave up, picked it back up to try again and gave up at 40-something percent. Skipped to the end and yep, I didn’t miss anything of interest.

Ridiculous premise- former werewolf womanizing jerk from a previous book leaves his pack and ends up going rogue. Yes, his wolf has become a killer of humans for his dinner.

Unfortunately, the jerk belonging to said wolf is living in the sewers to hide and roams slowly from place to place and his wolf killing whomever it wants. Until Collin spots and scents a waitress at a local cafe and is intrigued by her. So much that he stalks her for weeks before kidnapping her and hauling her to a busted old cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Not exactly the way to make a good first impression, especially while arguing with your wolf like a madman and howling as you drive off with her in the trunk of your stolen car.

And the story goes quickly downhill from there.

Basically it’s the worst ever dialogue, Collin insisting he and his captive are fated mates and what appears to be a run from the law in stolen vehicles and banging each other like there is no tomorrow?

And there is supposed to be a romance somewhere in this convoluted Stockholm Syndrome scenario?

Nope, just a lot of stomach churning and an honest wonder at what passes for love and romance these days.

Yeah… I don’t think I’ll be reading any more of this author.

3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Beast of Shadows” was another nice, quick read by Krista Street. Being a standalone, the pace was a bit faster than I’m used to be, but taking into consideration that I typically read series, I would say I’m a bit biased. With that in mind, some may want to take my review with a grain of salt 🧂

I enjoyed the plot and really appreciated learning about Collin through the perspective of his “abductee” 😉 I will say that at first I was a little worried I wouldn’t connect with the characters due to Collin’s murderous thoughts, but I quickly realized that there was a lot more under that facade. His obsession for Brianna was odd to start, but then after the fated mate bond came to light it all started to make sense 🫣

Even though Collin was still punished in the end, I thought the way that street approached this story was perfect. It would have been a bit difficult knowing that Collin was able to get away with everything despite killing in cold blood 🩸 So, I really appreciated the way in which he was released and the approach to ensure that our lovely FMC and MMC got their HEA ☀️ I will say, it KILLED me to know what Collin did to push Bri away, and the fact that she believed it…? Well I struggled a bit, but in the end, Street had her readers’ backs 🫶🏼

🔥🔥🔥🔥 The sexual content is hot!

World build:
Not complicated. Simple and to the point. Follows the line a your basic PNR with a couple of twists to make it original which I enjoyed.

Storyline:
Very dominate and sexy. I mean the heat between Bri and Collin will make you sweat. The chemistry is mesmerizing and the storyline was good but the chemistry is what had me hooked.

FMC:
Bri I liked because she was not the basic petite little mate. She was athletic, hard working and street smart. She is one that will not back down from a fight even if the odds are against her. She will hold her ground and I really enjoyed that.

MC:
Collin, his backstory was a little sad but if you take the PNR aspect out you probably know someone like him. Rich, entitled, selfish, and has the attitude that he is untouchable not even becoming a rogue. But that bites him in the ass and he lives a life he never saw coming. Very interesting character.

Secondary characters:
This is a stand alone so there was no big build in this area, but it worked since this is not a continuing series.

If you are looking for a very sexy read, pick it up peeps!

Happy reading,
DD 💕

This story is a spin-off from one of the authors other series that follows Collin. I haven’t read the other series yet, but I didn’t feel like I was missing much from not having read that series prior to picking up this book. This story is told from two POVs, both Collin and Brianna. It was great being able to read from both of their views and see how they are mentally handling things. I struggled a bit with Collin and his actions in this book. Brianna on the other hand was a strong, and spitfire chick. I loved her spirit and I enjoyed her inner monologue. There is definitely a lot of steamy romance that happens in this book. I found the fairy world very intriguing and I would love to read more about that particular world.

I would recommend this book to mature readers 18+ due to some things that happens in the book, and of course if you enjoy werewolves, and steamy paranormal romance reads with complex characters then this book is for you!

This is a tough read

I love a good redemption story. When an author can shine a new light on a misguided or misunderstood character and craft him/her a HEA it’s magical.

Unfortunately, Collin’s story does not fall into that category for me. To be honest, the first half is quite disturbing. I skipped over most of Collin’s chapters bc they were gross and unnecessary. It goes from detailed psycho thoughts to him being completely “healed” in the span of 2 chapters. There are way too many inner thoughts and we are told how strong their relationship is but you never see it develop. I also really wanted to see Collin take responsibility for his past actions especially with Daria but he doesn’t.

Honestly, I think 3 stars is probably too generous. I really like Logan and Daria’s series. Read those and skip this one. I wish I would’ve listened to the comments and skipped this one as well.

okay

*Spoilers* This book was okay. Not Krista Street’s best work. Even the writing seemed different until about half way through. But my opinion could stem from my personal trauma history biases. The stalking and kidnapping in the beginning, made it unbelievable for me that feelings would arise, even in fated mates. However, the book took a turn for the better and ended well. I considered stopping reading and I’m glad I didn’t. I love how Krista Street interconnects her worlds and characters. Street is an incredible author with an enviable imagination. The characters are dynamic, full, and round. Everything comes together nicely by the end. This is the last of Street’s works I have read, and honestly I’m sad I’ll have to wait for new book releases. It’s been an incredible journey and I recommend her works to everyone! If you enjoy romantasy, enemies to lovers, and similar, I highly recommend you read her multiple series.

Better than what I thought it was going to be considering I didn’t really love the series that this spin off of. I liked the journey that they went in together. As crazy as falling in love with your kidnapper is I think they played it in a more realistic way. I’m glad that Brianna always had a choice about the relationship. It seemed kind of obvious that she was a werewolf but sure make it a plot twist. I think the ending started to drag a little bit with Brianna getting more interested in her origins and the trial dragging out. I think the final punishment from the judge was fair as he did murder over 20 people even if he wasn’t in his right mind. Highlight would be the Declan debacle where he is drunk and follows Brianna out, tries to attack her but Collin comes in. I like how being a rogue made Collin more humble but still didn’t love him as a character.

Firstly, I never give a five star review, so these four stars are as good as can be! This book is fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed devouring this book, reading every time I had a spare moment! Sexy, bad boy wolf and a spitfire heroin--what more can you ask for!? Oh, right, um, there's lots of HOT sexy scenes, too. Fear, laughter, gut-wrenching sorrow? Check! Check! Check!

On the technical side- this author is a master of the craft. The story is well-written and well-developed, with a complex storyline that just works! It's fantasy, yes, but so damned believable! This complex rollercoaster ride ends fully resolved and with a lovely HEA! I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to a friend, and to you, dear reader of this review.

Why? Partially because I hate the jackass trope of hero emotionally brutalizing his partner "for her own good". It was addressed in the text in a blip of dialogue but... it was too brief to assuage me.
Also, it's pique not peek. I can actually deal okay with "peak" as an error because the way people misunderstand the word makes sense. Peek does not enjoy the same (erroneous) rationale. Also, elude for allude is a glaring error for me that makes me want to do the "take the glasses off and massage the temples" thing. But there was a brand new one, I don't think I've ever before seen someone use "penchant" when they meant "pensive".

A tale of woe & redemption.

So this follows Collin after his rather ignominious defeat for Alpha. He's gone rogue, as all packless wolves do & has been on a merry murder spree for two years. Then he sees Brianna & he & his wolf become obsessed.

I was not too fond of Collin in the previous stories; arrogant, entitled & a pain in the arse, so I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this book or not. I needn't have worried, the quality of the writing & the world building is so good that it swept away all my preconceptions. I'm looking forward to the next series of books by Krista Street which I've got cued up & ready to go!

4.5 Stars: A rogue wolf turned back to “normal” by his fated mate, why not. Street has done a great job in creating the world of the Supernatural Community and I enjoy returning back there to read another story by her. She pulled the characters together well and you could feel their “love” grow. Brianna could have struggled with it a little more especially since she thought she was human. I will say I did not expect her to be half-werewolf. That was a good twist. Overall I think the lessons Collin learned will serve him well as they continue their life together.

Collin was a arrogant, spoiled young wolf who thought he was in total control of his wolf. He was warned not to leave his pack for long or he risked going rogue. His wolf would go feral and go insane. He was sure he could control his wolf. He was wrong. Eighteen months after leaving his pack and family, his wolf was now almost totally out of control and he referred to it as beast.
Brianna was a college student working her way through undergrad and paying her own way. She worked as a waitress. Collin saw Brianna and began to stalk to tall friendly girl.

Wow, this book was definitely not what I expected. It was better. A thrilling ride through a PNR world unlike anything I’d read before where actions have consequences but love still wins every time. Brianna and Collin are brilliantly written characters, Collin especially. Even when he’s doing wrong, you can’t help but feel for him.
Get ready, because this isn’t a book that’ll let you go.
Krista Street has done a brilliant job and now I just want more.

Collin's story is told in only a way that Krista could. This book has it all, thrills, obsession, love, lust, pain, sorrow, action, romance, drama. You name it it's here. A look at another side of the supernatural while also reminding us yet again that true love can happen. The twist was a wonderful way to move the story along. Logan, Daria, and some of the others from her other books make an appearance too. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

The Beast Review

I almost stopped in the beginning much to rough as far as the craziness of the man who just seemed to be a stalker. I’d already started the book and I liked it at least try to finish something I started and I began to enjoy it more as time went on and had a little bit more more sex in it than I actually enjoy, but it was it was it turned out to be a very good story and I did enjoy it

Collin was the catalyst for Logan claiming Daria, in the series previously. This is his book of life as a rogue werewolf. It's also his story of redemption at the hands of his fated mate Brianna. It's not like the previous books and most of the story takes place over them connecting as they flee from the SF.

I have loved…

And devoured all of the NA PNR books by this (new to me) author this last week. Did I sacrifice sleep for it? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Now, that is out of the way - read the books. All of them. It’s worth it. I think I may delve into her YA series as well because the writing is just that good.

You can truly control your emotions

Collin grew up being spoiled and getting his way, but when tough times came and he made a stupid mistake, he left his pack. As the insane wolfe was coming out and killing collin could not stop thinking about one waitress. When it was evident that a miracle happened, the true fight to stay alive starts. This book was great to the end.

All of Street's books suffer from typos but this one was by far the worst. Street and her editing team seem to have a difficult time with homonyms. Peek/pique/peak, break/brake, roll/role, rail/rale... The list goes on. The person who takes the error reports at Kindle probably thinks I'm insane but this book literally had a similar typo every other chapter. How does that even happen?

A good read

Have you ever read a series and was interested in a side characters path? This book definitely delivered and brought closer to such an interesting character. This book was steamy, eye-catching and gave an amazing outlook on the character that it was based on. Definitely a 10/10.
