Increasingly morbidly obsessed with this period: a sort of evil golden age, full of wild and dubious Arts and Crafts and Baroque monsters. This is a good, fair-minded guide, but also (wholly unintentionally) pinpoints the precise wrong turning in early 20th century British architecture - the Palladian Revival Revival circa 1910, which spurned the quite lively and interesting Free Style and Baroque trends in favour of the always very bad idea of "Good Taste".

Picked up in a used bookstore in a cool neighbourhood in San Diego. Flicked through looking at the photographs and there was enough of interest to induce me to part with five dollars and then read on the flight home. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was the star of this era.
