Fairly readable, more than you would expect. Set in Wales and it expresses some sympathies for Welsh independence. Something I wouldn't expect from someone who is trying to imitate Walter Scott as much as possible.

Not sure how much of a translation it is from Willibald Alexis' German book. Would be amusing if DeQuincey made a fake translation of the original that was a fake "translation" of a book of Walter Scott.

I learned about this book from a biography of Thomas de Quincey, and became curious as to whether he'd managed to transform trash into something readable. If this is the doctored version, I shudder to think what the original must have been like.
