What if your dream job became your worst nightmare?
Bella seems to have it all – a beautiful home, a brilliant career, a loving husband and teenage daughter, and supportive family and friends. The only thing missing is her body confidence.
So, when her PA goes on maternity leave, she decides against hiring a temporary assistant and employs a personal trainer instead. Why squander hard-earned cash on a temp when she could put the money to better use? Surely, she deserved some happiness after years of being a mum, wife, and housekeeper.
But little did she know Frank would want more than tightening her glutes and toning her biceps. Angry and frustrated for making the wrong choice, Bella sacks Frank and hires a temp, Daisy.
Daisy has settled in nicely. She thinks she’s landed a great job. But if Bella thinks she can happily move on, as if Frank never existed, she may have to think again…

The Temp is a heart-pounding psychological thriller that will leave you wanting more. It's the perfect read for fans of authors like Lisa Jewell, Freida McFadden, S.E. Lynes and B.A. Paris
Kelly Florentia was born and bred in north London, where she continues to live with her husband Joe. HER SECRET (2018) is her third novel and the sequel to NO WAY BACK (2017).
Kelly has always enjoyed writing and was a bit of a poet when she was younger. Before penning her debut The Magic Touch (2016), she wrote short stories for women’s magazines. To Tell a Tale or Two… is a collection of her short tales. In January 2017, her keen interest in health and fitness led to the release of Smooth Operator – a collection of twenty of her favourite smoothie recipes.
As well as writing, Kelly enjoys reading, running, drinking coffee, scoffing cakes, watching TV dramas, and spending way too much time on social media.
Bella’s personal assistant goes on maternity leave, so Bella decides to get a personal trainer instead and work on her body. Unfortunately she chose the wrong man and she has to sack him, but he starts harassing her. She then decides to take on a Temp, Daisy who seems perfect, helping out both in Bella’s business and personal life.
Family secrets are revealed, the personal trainer gets involved with her family and Bella sees her life falling apart. Will she get rid of the personal trainer before he does too much harm?
Loved this book, kept you guessing, especially the final twist at the end, didn’t see that coming, although one part of it I had suspected early on but had dismissed it!
This is my first Kelly Florentia book and, what an introduction to the author! Who knew you could fit so much into 341 pages?
The Temp is a mind boggling psychological thriller, full of dark family secrets, lies, deceit, adultery, murder..... it's everything you could wish for, and more.
The narrative speeds along like a rollercoaster and doesn't give you time to take a breath before the next twist hits you.
I inhaled every page and can't wait to read more of Kelly's work.
Let me start by saying if you want a book with a plot that will grab you from the opening pages and drag you at full speed willingly to the end while never letting you have a moment resting on your laurels then look no further ! The book is set in London and surrounds one family called Villin’s . The book begins with Bella in the middle of a difficult situation with a man she came into contact with fairly recently , the trouble with this is she is married and he is just in the mood to cause all kinds of trouble for her … and that he does . Bella has a tight knit group of women around her and these ladies have each other’s backs , but her past is catching up with her quickly and she is going to need all the help she can get from these ladies as the situation is going downhill quickly , and this makes putting this book down near impossible as the fast pace never ceases from the beginning . I would say if you want a plot that has few slow parts , plenty of detail to keep you interested and a satisfying ending with a deplorable bad guy then check this book out !
Her dream job or her worse nightmare. Psychological thriller. This is one amazing book. Bella harris is keeping secrets from her husband Tom. Her gym trainer Frank wont leave her alone and blackmailing her, he needs to be rid of before he becomes her worse nightmare. Bella works as a property photographer and a new temp turns up on her doorstep Daisy Murphy who is Mrs Anderson's niece, he rand Tom are just about to go out on a friday evening, with a quick interview and a start date monday she even offers daisy a room she has only been in London a couple of weeks she couldn't see her homeless, has she done the right thing? This book oh what can I say is full of almighty twists that you cannot put down. Chapters that you don't see coming, above all its totally mind blowing.
When a book comes for me with absolutely magician-level sleight of hand twists and turns - that is always going to be a 5-star, top-tier read for me. Like, we could have been trucking along at meh levels, and a look over here while I do some massive reveals over here is always gonna do it for me! And that is what this author did, except no meh was involved at all. In a complete compliment to her, I forgot I was reading a new author and thought I was reading one of my familiar go-to faves at one point mid-to-late book because I was enjoying the book so much.
Pretty much from page one, we hit the ground running, and I'm like, OMG, where is this going, and how are we getting there? But then the twisty turns keep coming, and there were some very late reveals that just kept coming!!
Wow!! At first, I thought this was her first book and was extra amazed at the talent, but this appears to be her sixth (including a smoothie cookbook), which doesn't discount her talent at all, just means she has had a little more time to hone it. And it means we can find some more writing by this talented lady!
She knocked this one out of the park. I really enjoyed getting to know the main character, Bella, and her family, as they became entangled with Frank, her vindictive, vengeful, secret personal trainer, and her new temp personal assistant, Daisy. This book has a lot to say, and more than one character learns some hard lessons!
I will absolutely be looking up the author's past catalogue and eagerly awaiting more from her beautiful mind!
I have read this author’s work before & this one is a bit different. A standalone psychological thriller which is written in short chapters so the pace is spot on.
The book opens with a bang. Bella has recently walked away from her personal trainer, Frank, due to an incident at one of their sessions. Trouble is, he doesn’t want to let go & appears to be threatening her. But with what? In addition, Bella’s assistant is on maternity leave when she is fortuitously introduced to Daisy, who is instantly hired as a temporary replacement. Bella has a strong network of women around her & she needs them; Frank wheedles his way into her inner sanctum & causes all sorts of problems. Daisy becomes invaluable.
The characters are great & who doesn’t love a feisty teenage daughter? As I’ve already said, the pace is just right & as for the reveal… An enjoyable read & it certainly kept me on my toes.
My goodness this book got my heart pounding, a complex thriller with lots of elements expertly woven together to make a fast paced full of suspense thrilling read. It certainly put me off hiring a personal trainer or assistant 😂😳😱 I loved the build up and the twists involved with this storyline I had no idea what was going to happen next, I certainly didn’t have a clue of that ending! The short chapters made for a great one more chapter read in fact I couldn’t stop doing that and finished it in one sitting! A great read from a new author for me and one I definitely read again.
This book was a superb, suspenseful read. I had only read a couple of chapters and I was highly addicted to it. This is the first book I have read from this author, and now I’m on the hunt for more. The story plot is brilliant, and the suspense just got ramped up more the further I read on. I had so many ideas of what was going to happen or who did what, I was surprised every time and no way near my ideas. There were a few characters that I just wanted to slap them but I think that’s good writing. I will say this you will not get bored as the author has been generous with the story & the gob smacking twists.
This book is fast-paced, gripping, and emotional. The short chapters really kept me hooked. I kept saying, "Right, just one more chapter." 😅 The character development was spot on. I kept swinging between loving and hating some of them. Daisy had me confused the whole time. I also loved the relationship between Bella, Zelda, and Linda. And the drama that Georgia added... perfect!
A brilliant psychological thriller, with an ending that completely surprised and shocked me!
I've read all of Kelly Florentia's fiction (four previous novels and a book of short stories), and was keen to read her fifth novel, The Temp.
The tension is there right from the start, with Bella (married to Tom) attempting to end what we think of as a 'professional' relationship with Frank - a personal trainer. He's not going quietly, and we already sense he is going to be a problem! Is this going to turn into a classic stalker scenario? Well, yes - and no. This book is way more complex and your expectations and assumptions are continually subverted, via misdirection and sudden changes that derail what you thought was the state of play.
As always, with Kelly Florentia, we are offered extremely well-drawn characters, that reveal themselves through dialogue, but also body language, dress choice, and shifting attitudes. We get to know them as the pressure mounts, and how this pressure affects Bella and Tom's marriage, Bella's relationship with her sister, Zelda - and indeed Bella's whole sense of who she is.
I am at pains here not to give away any huge plot points, as this might spoil someone's reading experience.
This novel is about family secrets, about trust - and its bending and breaking. About past relationships haunting present ones. It is also about forgiveness, and the search for identity and confidence. It explores the external threat to love and familial relationships, and how best to deal with any such threat. Do you hope it goes away, pay it off, or do you do something formerly unthinkable?
There are passages of dark humour, as a seemingly absurd situation grows much more serious, then potentially deadly.
There is a very skilfully attained sense of setting (North London) and of a friendship and family grouping, with history - good and bad, and a dissection of how the complex bonds of blood and/or romantic love can be overwhelming, maddening, or simply what keeps us going and provides us with our identity, and purpose in life.
Social media, mobile phones, ie modern technology, is instrumental to the plot, and character development, and is simply how people communicate and miscommunicate - a fact of modern life.
The growing sense of an imminent crime - and then whether indeed a certain crime has been committed keeps the reader pushing onward, through hook after hook at the end of each punchy chapter.
Excellent pacing ensures interest in the story and Bella's predicament never flags.
It is in the final several chapters, with a growing sense of the unreliability of Bella's narration, followed by a change of perspective, from which the magnitude of the final reveal is laid bare.
You will never guess at it. You simply have to read The Temp to find out!
What a clever read! I spent quite a bit of the novel wondering why it was called The Temp when that particular person seems to be in the background of the dramas exploding in the family. At the end though, it all made sense in a way that made me sit back and think, “Bravo!”
The story centres around Bella, a property photographer whose life choices may not have been the wisest. One of those choices is a personal trainer, Frank, who seems more than a little manipulative, and who isn’t prepared to go quietly when Bella ends their training due to his unwanted advances.
Although he’s the one I loved to hate, I really didn’t like Bella’s husband either; his behaviour seemed to suggest a layer of contempt towards her, kept hidden from others under a professional facade.
And that’s what I enjoyed about this book - the pacy plot and twists that I definitely did not see coming had me gripped, but it was the way the characters were written that sold me too. I love it when a writer evokes a visceral reaction in me as I read!
As the story progresses, the plot gets a little confusing towards the end but don’t worry, it all becomes clear. Also, I’d stayed up until 2am because I just had to know what happened at the end, so the confusion may have been down to my exhaustion!
In short, I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a read that keeps you guessing - and good luck figuring it all out!
Bella regrets ever getting involved with Frank, a personal trainer, but getting him out of her life is not as easy as she might have hoped, especially when he manages to infiltrate her inner circle. Then when Bella hires a temp to help out while her assistant is on maternity leave, another level of mystery and intrigue is added.
This latest novel from Kelly Florentia had me gripped from the very first page. Set in North London and with a wide cast of characters, it’s a taut and tense thriller that kept me guessing all the way through.
I loved the dynamic between Bella, her sister Zelda and her friend Linda and their antics had me gasping and laughing aloud too at times. It was difficult to know who to trust, as there were so many twists, turns and red herrings, and just when I thought I had it all worked out, then another bombshell would be dropped! It made for a very enjoyable, gripping and page-turning read.
The Temp is about Bella, a woman who has a seemingly perfect life but does carry insecurities around her body. When her PA takes maternity leave, Bella decides to hire a PT called Frank instead of a temp to invest in herself but doesn’t tell her husband. Things with Frank become messy, with him becoming intrusive in her life which leads to Bella firing him and then hiring a temp called Daisy. We haven’t seen the last of Frank though, as he shows up as Bella’s sister’s new boyfriend! Daisy becomes more helpful and appears perfect, until tension escalates…
A really good domestic thriller which captures the readers attention from the first page. I felt the characters, including the side characters, were well described and it adds a lot of depth to the story. There are several surprises and twists which did catch me slightly off guard, with the final twist was really unexpected! It is a book that will have you reading more to find out what will happen next!
I really enjoyed this read it was full of twists and turns right up until the end which I loved but wasn’t expecting! Our main character Bella was a really likeable character but it all seemed to be going on in her life!
She was not expecting to find that her clients niece Daisy, who was interested in Bella’s temp job to be at her house for an interview so soon, not that she’d be moving in with them! But Daisy was such a helping hand to Bella she soon became part of the family.
The problem with Bella’s family is that it was full of secrets and lies so it was all going on! There was some really great scenes throughout the book and as I said before, a lot of surprises along the way too. I’d had some thoughts was I was reading about what I thought would happen however, I was way off the mark.
Really well written, I loved the pacing of it and it kept me gripped throughout.
Following the Villin family, this book definitely keeps you on your toes! I did like the build up and the twists involved with this storyline, ones I didn't see coming.
I like how Daisy was employed as the temp and slotted herself into her new life with Bella and Tom. I liked Georgia, their teen daughter, she's a typical teenager but has a heart of gold.
Frank seemed the right choice when Bella wanted a personal trainer but something didn't sit right with her as time went on.
Daisy always seemed to be in the right place at the right time but maybe she was always lurking, always listening.
This is my first book by this author and I'll look into more in future, it kept me engaged, kept me guessing to certain situations and their outcomes.
Bella had hired a personal trainer for herself when her assistant went on maternity leave, thinking that instead of investing in help, she would focus on herself. But the instructor started having feelings for her and then became obsessive. The story is fine. It could have been so luch better executed. I mean, first, what is the husband’s issue with you getting a trainer. You can’t be that much of a control freak, and if he is, girl, what are you doing? But the unfolding of this lie is what makes the book kinda ok. Please read if you want very basic timepass.
This is my first read by this author and I have to say that it won't be my last!
This is my favourite genre and I love to find new authors to follow and more new reads to enjoy.
This was really easy to get into and although I wasn't too keen on the characters to start with, the storyline had me intrigued enough to carry them.
I actually think there's a trend for unlikable characters at the moment and although this means we don't connect with anyone in particular, we also don't know who to trust.
This set off at a great pace and I loved the short chapters which also allows seemed to leave us on mini cliffhangers, making me desperate to carry on reading and finding out just what happened next!
This did mean that I devoured this book over the course of just 2 days and read late into the evening.
The writing style built up a great atmosphere and the more we read, the more on edge I became - which makes for the perfect thriller.
I did question at times whether the title matched the story - but without giving any spoilers, things do develop and the threads weave together to conclude in a surprising way at the end!
Ive never read any Kelly Florentia books before this one and im so glad that they're now on my forever growing TBR. This was a fabulous thriller that kept me guessing right to the end!
I loved Bellas story and how the numerous situations in the book are dealt with throughout. When one twist is revealed, the next twist appears! The relationship between Bella and her assistant Daisy progresses well and they both keep you on your toes! All of a sudden, I was speechless! I definitely didn't see the ending!!
if you're a fan of Freida, this one is perfect. Short Chapters, Twists and Turns!
The Temp is the first time I had heard of this author, and I was hooked by her writing style.
This was such a fast paced story, packed with twists and turns. I was so swept up in the story, I couldn't put it down.
Every time I thought I knew the ending, something else happened to keep me guessing. The character development was so well done, I had a love/hate relationship with all of them.
A wonderful psycholocal thriller that just keeps giving.
The Temp by Kelly Florentia. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the cover. I got into this book straight away. I couldn't put it down. I read this in two sittings. It was gripping and twisty. I did like the writing style and the story. I did like the short chapters. It made it an easy and quick read. I wasn't sure how I felt about Bella. I did like her but I didn't hate her. I really didn't expect that ending. My jaw was on the floor. Definitely Recommend.
I was hooked from the first page. The book is full of twists and turns and at times my heart was pounding thanks to the fast paced nature of the story. It was very hard to put down and I definitely uttered ‘just one more chapter’ several times because I just had to know what was happening. I didn’t see the end coming a real page turner and a joy to read from start to finish.
I liked this book but I found it a little disjointed. It was entertaining but not realistic, which is ok because it's a book. But the character development wasn't there for me. That said, glad I read it.
This book was a decent plot but I could not get very interested in what happened. It might have been the writing style, or maybe I did not really care what happened to any of the main characters. I did manage to finish it though.
I did enjoy this book but couldn’t quite follow some parts (due to distractions on my behalf) so I am going to read again in the future but overall I did enjoy the book 📕
Not a thriller or physiological for that matter . Felt more like a soap opera with a tad mystery lol I did read it all tho and say wow wonder where this is going
