This is a selection of 160 works of poetry that I write whilst working on my novels. I don’t know why they come into my head, they just do. I have decided to put them all into one place, and this is it – the aptly named RHYMES…for I don’t pretend to be a poet, and I shouldn't really be a writer, but for some strange reason I am – so, rather than just cast these rhymes aside, I thought for my own amusement I would put them in this folder…….and then somebody asked me to share
I have been a story teller all my life but I had a dark secret. A secret that stopped me showing anyone my work. I could neither read or write properly. I was classed as an idiot at school in the days before the word dyslexia was known. I would write story after story sometimes filling a large foolscap jotter (150 pages +)and when finished I would destroy it so no body would see it and laugh at me like they did at school. The very fact that I could not read never limited my stories because My head was full of them and still is to this day. The reason I began to have my work published was down to my wife Beverly Bernett. She used to be a radiology transcriptionist and could type really well. She saw on the computer one of my stories and asked me what it was. Rather embarrassed I said it was a story, she then read it put all the comma's full stops and everything else a story needs to make it readable without changing the words. She then sent it to lulu.com and published it. She then gave me a mantra 'There is no wrong just write'. and here I am writing my fourth novella with one poetry book published as well and two poetry books being edited by her as we speak (11/01/14) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5Yu7...
I’ve always been a fan of poetry, my good old mum has been writing poems about our family and the world around us for as long as I can remember, so I do enjoy reading the works of other like-minded people, who write normal poems. By ‘normal’ I mean the kind of poem that is what it is, that makes sense and doesn’t have to be over analysed to understand it. John Paul Bernett writes my kind of poem.
There were so many poems in this book that I could relate to, that made me smile and brought back memories for me…’A Raleigh Chopper’ who didn’t want one of those in the 70’s? Each poem follows a different theme, but each one is written from the heart. I loved the one called ‘A Better Way’, it is a frank and honest description of the way our county is governed (whatever party happens to be in power at the time!)
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bernett at a recent Steampunk event in Leeds, and was fascinated by his story and how he became a writer, he is a very interesting man and I enjoyed seeing deeper inside his soul through his words.
Rhymes is a concise collection of poetry covering themes such as love, death, respect, environment/mother nature, depression, and family. I felt there was a new uplifting perspective on every topic written about, from an author who has lived through a variety of struggles, and still smiles.
Wonderful book...humbly written but deeply invocative...reminds you of why you love, laugh and live...I can highly recommend this to anybody...it touches your soul <3
