I Destroyed the Elf Prince's Harem

Rate this book
Who hasn't wanted to disappear into their favorite book? Live in the world of their favorite characters?

Well, when this author fell off a bridge thanks to flipping a magic coin, I woke up in the one place I didn't want to be—my own unfinished novel.

Now I'm trying to untangle this twisted plot, put the hero back on track to finding his brother's killer, and getting his happily ever after.

All while not dying at the hands of orcs, ogres, humans, elves, and just about anyone else I run into.

Maybe if I clean up this mess, I'll be able to go home.

Except that going home sounds less appealing the longer I'm around Prince Nylian.

Crap! Am I falling for the hero too?

I Destroy the Elf Prince's Harem is a stand-alone novel within the Fortune Favors the Fae collection and follows the adventures of one poor author as he stumbles his way through his own novel and just maybe falls in love with the hero. Along the way he will encounter elves, humans, ogres, a wizard-in-training who's really bad at magic, jealousy, possessiveness, political intrigue, secrets, and a prince who has eyes for just one man. Unfortunately, that one man is as blind as a bat when it comes to love.

« I’d fallen off a bridge and landed in my own unfinished novel? How the hell did something like that even happen? »

I absolutely loved this. I love isekai plots, fantastical quests, a fun crew of misfits on a journey together.
This read was laugh-out-loud level funny, and had me giggling even just from the chapter titles.

“You are my harem of one. My one and only. I need no one else, and that is how it will remain.”

The romance was very sweet and passionate, and I loved that Nylian was the one that fell first, with Adam being an oblivious goof. The elf prince was obviously pining and trying to get the silly human’s attention, and Adam was trying to set him up with a harem. These two fit so perfectly together.

The story was adventurous and funny, full of action and intrigue and love and friendship.
I forgot how much I love Jocelynn Drake’s writing, and I really should look into more of her work.

I’m also curious about the other stories in this series, because this was a blast and hopefully the rest will be as fun as this one was.

Somewhere along the line in all these weeks of travel, danger, and chaos, I’d stopped thinking about Nylian as a character I’d created in a world I’d designed to pay my bills. Nylian had become real. His pain and joy were real. The danger and betrayal were real. And so was the love growing in my heart for him.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

CW and tropes (spoilers):
- Isekai
- Human x elf prince
- Possessive MCs
- Queer awakening
- Forced proximity
- Sort of enemies to lovers
- Strict top/bottom
- Frotting

Read in another fun buddy read with the always lovely Lilly ❤️

What would you do if you found yourself transported into the world you created for your book?

Well, fall in love with your main character, of course 😉

Adam lives in the real world, our world. He's a big introvert, but also a writer. He's churning out snippets of his story for his readers, intending to make a full length fantasy novel where his main character, Nylian the elf prince, has a harem of women he 'falls for' along his journey, and of course has all the sexytimes with them.

But when Adam is out to meet up with his friends, he finds a mysterious coin and proceeds to be shoved off the side of a bridge by a car and presumably dies, except he actually wakes up in a whole new world - his world, the world he created, and Nylian the elf prince is the first face he sees when he wakes, and what a face it is.

As Adam tries to steer Nylian in the right directions, to follow the plot he'd had so far in his semi-written book, Adam gets very much entangled in the book's plot himself, and becomes very close to the elf prince.

Who, it becomes obvious very quickly, is having feelings for an oblivious Adam, who seems determined to keep the story on track and have Nylian get with all the women who are supposed to be in his harem.

But Nylian isn't just the character he created anymore. Neither is any of the other characters in this world. He's his own person, and has much more depth than Adam realized, or probably even got to in his writing of him in the book.

So the elf prince throws everything entirely off course, not being interested in any of the women he's supposed to be, and only having eyes for Adam.

What an adventure this book is. It was so fun and interesting - I love this somewhat new concept (at least to me) of characters getting transported into books - their own or not - and living in that book now and falling for the main hero in the place of the other MC, or multiple MC's, in this case.

There is no harem, and there becomes only one for Nylian - the man who created him.

Also, there are twists and turns as Adam follows the plot of his book, and then goes beyond it, finding out the answers that he himself hadn't come up with in the real world yet.

This book world becomes a real world, and as Adam and Nylian fall deeper in love, Adam worries more and more that the stupid coin he found on the bridge - and is still sticking around in this new world too - will take him back to his world...and away from Nylian, which he absolutely does not want.

Of course they get their HEA, but not after some trials and tribulations. And Adam's own obliviousness. But he eventually gets his wake up call, and once he does he's as devoted to Nylian as Nylian is to him.

The chemistry was on point, and I couldn't get enough. I do wish there had been some more sex scenes - the ones we got were so good! - but I understand the plot didn't allow for too many detailed sex scenes, so I'm able to get past the less sexytimes than I would have liked.

I highly recommend this. I dunno why I took a break from this author, but this book has certainly renewed my love and interest for her works.

I can't wait to read her next book! 😍

Absolutely loved this book. Adam made me crack up - he was totally oblivious to Nylian’s flirting.

I’ve read several books in this multi author collaboration and would highly recommend it.

I Destroyed the Elf Prince’s Harem is part of the standalone Fortune Favors the Fae series.

This book was so fun and creative! It made me laugh within pages and after reading the first few chapters that Jocelynn Drake teased us with, I was hooked.

Adam is an author who is an introvert and currently writing a book that he is now struggling with. He is going to meet his friends for lunch when he sees and picks up a mysterious coin that leads to him being transported into the book he is writing! Adam’s POV is the only one we see, except for the Coin’s epilogue, that is featured in all the Fortune Favors the Fae books.

Nylian is the main character of Adam’s book, he has been accused of his twin’s murder and is trying to prove his innocence/ find who really did it.

It was hilarious watching Adam try to get Nylian’s harem together while Nylian was just like ‘I only want you, you are mine’.

Nylian’s possessiveness and Adam’s cluelessness was certainly an interesting dynamic that kept me reading, along with many other things I could go on about…

I didn’t want to miss any of the journey but also NEEDED to know what would happen. Adam and Nylain’s story touched me on so many levels, I swooned, I smiled, I sighed and I giggled as I cheered this couple on.

I Destroyed the Elf Prince’s Harem is a steamy, fiery rom-com that pays homage to bookish folks everywhere and had me hooked, laughing and swooning from beginning to end!

This book contains sensitive content such as death, mention of attempted murder (poisoning) and violence.

funny, imaginative and quite magical story

Rating: 4.5🌈

I Destroyed the Elf Prince’s Harem is Jocelynn Drake’s funny, imaginative and quite magical story in the multi-Author Fortune Favors the Fae series. I enjoyed it on so many levels. The characters, the storyline, and all the various elements Drake threw together to make this an entertaining rousing adventure.

I can only imagine the enjoyment Drake had writing this story, one that has a certain online novelist, Adam Lockhart , with severe writers block, stumbling into his own unfinished story where none of his characters behave as they should, the plot is nothing like he intended, as everything’s going totally amuck from how he assumes the universe will be. Sort of like it might feel like in an author’s mind when working on an uncooperative project. Love this so much.

Adam’s been churning out a fantasy online series, Betrayal of the Elf Prince, with daily installments expected from his fans/paying readers. A trip to see friends is waylaid by finding a gold coin, yes, that one, and boom, Adam ends up in the town of Misty Pass, a place he’d created from his own unfinished novel. Ok, more to it than that but I’ll leave it to the book.

Of course he meets Nylian, a prince in disguise and distress. But it’s our Adam, the modern day human, we get more and more invested in. Adams who thinks he knows what will happen but watches with total bemusement and a great deal of befuddlement as the chaos continues on with his “plot” as he’s thrown into the lives of the people and world around him. Including Nylian a person he’s getting so close to.

It’s funny, exhilarating, real in the exploration of a new feelings and sexuality as well as the excitement in seeing all the different aspects of the world he’s found himself in. One he created but it’s so new too. The other characters are especially interesting and great in their own ways. The mercenary Adeline and her younger brother, Jasper, the wizard in training. Master Binx who I really needed more of, so adorable.

There’s adventure, magical goings on, dastardly characters and romance. And punny names!

If I had a quibble, it’s that the coin had a negligible role here. It’s assumed it’s good luck but as a major element it’s somewhat lacking.

But the characters, their journey and the potential for even more interesting tales is so strong, I highly recommend this book and Drake as an author for your auto list.

I am weak for mc wakes up in another world themes, from anime and manga days so it was wonderful to see in book form. This story grabbed me instantly and I adored the adventure from start to finish.

Such an interesting concept, although I'd have liked more explanation of the coin and reasons as came across random. But I haven't read others in series so maybe the coin shows more in those that make sense as to why it does this.

Anyway Adam & Nylian captured my heart I adored their chemistry, the slow building relationship. Both at oblivious in different ways, Adam trying to lead Nylian to meet those due to be part of his harem and Nylian flirting with Adam deciding he doesn't want want anyone else.

Yet they both have no idea the others intent until later, they're so much fun together and plenty of humour too. Of course actions scenes too, with their travels leading them into various conflicts and capture yet as a team they're able to move forward.

I loved the side cast too of Jasper & Adeline, they brought so much to the tale. Their support on the journey, the magic leads to hilarious results and I adored the chipmunk. His decision, so fitting and I mean who can blame him. Getting carried around and looked after, life of luxury right there.

The protective, possessive and jealousy is perfection here. Once these two finally get together, they have all the passion and cheesy sweetness between them. "You're mine." Is a common statement and its just all of the feels, these two just have so much charm as they fall in love. The declarations they give about each other, so many beautiful quotes and scenes.

The whole switch of body thing was interesting too, I was surprised by it and not sure to start but it made sense to fit him into the universe. I loved Adams comments about his own writing throughout, the puns were fantastic and his forgetting aspects of his own story.

Dress up, fishing, piano, horse riding, pet and holding each other simply a few great moments that come to mind.

Overall I had such a fun time with this book, the world building is stunning and something to enjoy for everyone. The romance is wonderful, giving all the feels and has found family vibes too.

Nylian & Adam get their happily ever after 💛

An interesting idea but it takes a while to get going

While all comes well in the end, this plot took an age to actually get going and the first third or so was incredibly slow paced.

It's also a serious slow burn, with nothing happening between the two main characters until we're past the halfway point.

Now, that's not to say that it's not an enjoyable read, Jocelynn Drake knows how to build a world and she does a great job with that here.

But, I think I'd have preferred a bit more romance alongside the investigation and fantasy parts, rather than the humour and repetition of Adam and Nylian landing in another sticky situation.

This is also another book where Coin is disappointingly missing from the narrative until the end, other than the vague idea that brings Adam into his book world.

I was so looking forward to this book because .... really, look at it:
The cover is awesome
The title is funny
And the plot sounds great

So, I am unsure if it was just me - as I had a massive book-hangover - or really the book
Personally, I think it was a me-problem

Nevertheless, no matter the reason, I had a really hard time getting into the book and connecting with the characters
Nearly the first half dragged a bit for me

BUT, the second half made totally up for that, and I loved it so much that I had difficulties putting it down.

Nylians determination to not only get justice for his brother but also to keep Adam safe is really sexy
I think he was my favourite here

In all, a great story after a bit of a adjustment difficulties

Delightful adventure-romance ... Adam Lockhart is definitely an idiot (like the coin said 😁) when it comes to understanding that Nylian wants him (Adam has been trying to stick to his book plot and build Nylian his harem, stupid boy!). But it also makes it so much fun when Nylian finally stakes his claim over Adam.

Interesting secondary characters too.

I have given up hope that I will ever finish this book... I am suspecting it's an 'it's me not you' situation, because I started reading this when I was in a slump, but still: I got pretty far and was enjoying it until I just didn't.

So about the story: we have a struggling writer who sort of dies and ends up in his own story. A typical transmigrition/reincarnation plot that we see a lot in webtoons and manga but not so much in stories like this. I like the idea. What follows are the usual shenanigans to clear the male leads name (who has been accused of killing his own brother), accompanied by the hillarious commentary of our main character, who is one funny and relatable guy. As for the title, our MC is having a bi-awakening and the elf prince is head over heels for him and thus his future harem is destroyed before it could even start.

So, why did I not finish this? One reason could be that I have this toxic trait that I often lose interest the second the MC and the ML get together. I am sure that played a part in all of this. Secondly, I think I just got bored with all the fun and games and just wanted to get to the ending which wasn't anywhere in sight. Finally, as I said before, I started this during a reading slump in which no story could keep my attention. Halfway through I decided to take a break from this book and during that break I read two books by Robin Hobbs, which was unfair of me, because once I picked it up again it kind of paled in comparison. A lot of books would, if I'm honest.

So there is that. I dnf'ed... BUT don't let my rating keep you from reading this if you're interested.

I Destroyed the Elf Prince’s Harem is a standalone book in the multi-author series Fortune Favors the Fae. It is a delightful adventure-romance, portal rom-com that perfectly balances humour, fantasy and romance.

The story follows Adam Lockhart, a clueless author who, with a help of a magical Coin, ends up inside his own fantasy world. Being stuck there, Adam tries to follow his original plot by building a harem for the elf prince Nylian. However, Adam, being the clueless baby bisexual that he is, is utterly clueless that Nylian has no interest in a harem and instead wants only Adam. It is this dynamic between Adam’s utter obliviousness and Nylian’s growing possessiveness what makes this story so much fun.
Their relationship is a slow burn, but watching Adam slowly realize that Nylian isn’t just a character to recognising him as someone he truly cares for is both sweet and rewarding.

Jocelynn Drake is very clever in playing with this idea that, I’m sure, many readers share — becoming part of our favourite book and having the MC fall for us. But what makes this story special is that Adam isn’t just a reader but the author of that world, which only adds to the layers of the plot.

While the first 20-25% of the book felt a bit slow for me, once the story picks up I had no trouble with fully immersing myself in the story. I loved how the supporting characters added their own unique charm, making it feel a bit like a D&D adventure with a bunch of quirky misfits on a quest. And the overall humour, especially in how clueless Adam is about Nylian’s feelings and flirtations, really elevated the story.

However, there are a few loose ends, but the one I was stuck with is the question of the future. Elves are said to live much longer than humans, so what happens when Adam ages while Nylian remains young? The book doesn’t give us a clear answer, or any answer at all, but this doesn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of the story.

I Destroyed the Elf Prince’s Harem is a fun, sweet and creative read. So, if you love fantasy and romance with a good dose of humour, this book is definitely worth checking out. Jocelynn Drake has done a great job with isekai/portal trope, making it a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I've been waiting with bated breath for this book in the series and I was not disappointed. A clueless author without a plot who falls into his own unfinished book? Yes please! I thought the premise for the story was very clever - a bit like a reverse Inkheart. Adam is an introverted author whose latest book has run away with him and he has no clue how it ends. The world he falls into is beautiful, full of wondrous places and fantastic creatures. He is rescued by the hero of his book and thinks he knows where the story should go - how wrong he is. Nylian is a great character, an exiled Prince trying to find his way home. Their adventures are sweet, laugh out loud funny, sometimes dramatic and daring. The side characters are well rounded and add so much to the story. I could read about this realm and their adventures forever

OMG. So so good. Adam is an author who writes fantasy novels. He is currently working on a book that has a prince that was exiled who meets his harem when trying to solve the mystery of his twin brother’s death. When his best friend gets him to come out for lunch to take a breather, he finds the coin. When he looks up, he finds a truck barrelling towards him throwing him over the bridge. When he wakes up, he meets Nylian. Told in Adam’s point of view, it tells the story of him realizing that he is his own book, adventures, action and great chemistry between the MCs and figuring out who poisoned his brother. I laughed a few times as Adam was not aware that Nylian was flirt with him. Loved this book and I recommend reading the complete series.

Loved It

Absolutely fabulous. So the main romantic character in a book is usually based on one of two things. They are either based on an ideal person the writer could fall for or someone the writer would like to be. Therefore if the writer fell into the book they‘d be extremely likely to fall for their MC. Of course there are complications. Firstly Adam believes he‘s heterosexual so his mind refuses to accept he is attracted to a male. It might need a lot of persuasion to think otherwise. Secondly the plot has taken on a mind of its own thanks to a certain fae coin. Lots of shenanigans and fun results from this. I loved it.

I decided to start this book blind, partly because I know I like Jocelynn's writing and partly because I know the tropes the books in this series have to follow. I have so far found myself in the nice position where I can say I was pleasantly surprised yet also completely expected to be.
I have to say, it was very clever of Jocelynn how the plot was set up. After all, out of all of us readers who hasn't wished to be part of our favorite book and have the beloved main character fall for us? The "x reader" fanfic genre exists for a reason. And playing with that, and Adam being the author instead of just a mere reader, was wonderfully clever. I really enjoyed it

Fantastic Story!

Absolutely loved this story! High fantasy at its best. Adam is a burned out writer trying to finish a serial book and finds a coin that transports him into his own book. Prince Xeran is an elf on the run, trying to find who killed his twin brother. Their meeting is explosive.
There as so much going on in this wonderful story! Jocelynn Drake has created a world so enthralling that I read it in one day. A great story that I will definitely read again. Highly Recommended

adam lockhart, a modern-day writer struggling with severe writer’s block. he’s been churning out chapters after chapters of his fantasy series, "betrayal of the elf prince," hoping to satisfy his eager readers. but his mundane life takes a turn when he discovers a mysterious coin and suddenly finds himself transported to the very world he created. he does not know who he is and his characters aren’t behaving as intended. and the very protagonist he created is there standing right above him the moment he opens his eyes.

nylian, the exiled elf prince, is everything adam imagined and more. he’s charming, complex, and no longer just a character in a story. when adam meets nylian, the prince is in disguise. and adam makes sure that he sticks with him.

as they navigate the unpredictable plot, it becomes clear that nylian has eyes only for adam, turning the harem dynamic upside down. atleast to the readers and not adam.

"the only one i want in my bed is you. if you can arrange for that to happen each and every night, i will be perfectly happy. you are mine, lockhart. don’t forget that."

there's humor, adventure, and cute romance as adam grapples with the realization that he’s not just a spectator in his own story; he’s an integral part of it. not only has he ruined as he liked to call it, the chances of nylian acquiring a harem, he has become the very reason nylian won’t have a harem.

"you are my harem of one. my one and only. i need no one else and that is how it will remain."

"you are not some shameful secret to be hidden. you will not be another consort. i plan to marry only once and it will be to you. there will be no harem of consorts. just you."

"are you disappointed that i don’t have a harem? that all my attention is devoted to you alone?"

"no” i replied petulantly. “i dare you to create a harem now. there’s no fucking sharing."

the witty banter and undeniable chemistry between adam and nylian kept me hooked. every moment of their growing relationship felt genuine and exciting, as adam learns to embrace his feelings in this fantastical realm and just let himself free to be with nylian. nylian is so sweet and only has eyes for adam.

the plot is wonderful, orian and nylian’s bond, the whole journey this book takes us through makes us feel that we are travelling with adam and nylian through all the different kingdoms.

the supporting characters, the fierce mercenary adeline and her younger brother jasper, added depth to the narrative, each bringing their own quirks and charm. i loved how the world-building unfolded, making the fantastical setting feel vibrant and alive.

i loved orian. i wish we could have seen more of him. the way he was pretending to be nylian but adam recognized him immediately and how proud nylian was.

"i know with only a peek that it’s nylian. it’s in his eyes and the way he looks at me with his whole heart. i can hear it in his voice and the way his tongue wraps those two words: precious one. and i know it in his smell. he is heaven to me and there’s no mistaking it. it’s too easy for me to tell you two apart."

their possessiveness is delightful to read and i loved it. they are so loving and protective of each other.

"i don’t want my old life back. you weren’t in my old life. i refuse to have a life that doesn’t include you."

"prince xeran elrich is mine and i dare you to steal him from me!”

"but i’m warning you if anything happens to you while i’m in the castle i swear to whatever gods may be that i will destroy anyone who touches you. fire and brimstone. death and destruction. even if it means using the rest of my life to learn the darkest magic in existence. i will burn down this world if i lose you."

"i don’t know how long this is going to last. i expect to be killed long before i can present my proof to my father. however, if these are my last days, i want them filled with you. i want you with me when i find the truth because when you’re near me i don’t feel as if the task in front of me is impossible."

"when i say that prince victor is with me i mean he is with me. he is mine"

after reading so many red flags and morally grey characters, reading green flag characters who just stop immediately whenever their partner are scared of being hurt while doing it, is refreshing. i miss the green flags.

"no, i won’t allow it. we won’t continue if it hurts you. how could i possibly enjoy it if i knew you were in any kind of pain?"

some other favorite quotes :

"regardless of magic coins and fate, i couldn’t leave here. i had to find a way to stay. i belonged with nylian and nothing was going to change that."

"it doesn’t matter if we’re together in this world or your world. i’m happy so long as i have you."

this book is a delightful escape into a world of magic and romance that i wholeheartedly recommend. jocelynn drake has created a captivating tale that left me wanting more!

I really liked the story and characters.

The whole journey of them was as chaotic as the writer, Adam, who came up with it in the first place. Still, it was charming and entertaining nontheless.

At first I didn't get Adam being attracted to the elf prince at all as it didn't translate in him being hesitant or reluctant to point him toward a potential harem mate. He never acted jealous, the only one being jealous was Nylian. Even later on he never showed any signs of being jealous of a potential "harem wife"being in the vacinity of Nylian. The first true glimpsed were felt when they were in the river for their fishing challenge. Only for him to go forth and personally seek out two potential new bedmates for Nylian. Weird... Otherwise he hardly even recognized him as someone other than the MC of his book. The only reference to him even thinking of him as attractive before that river moment was when he referred to his hair:
Nylian was sitting up next to me, also bound, as he leaned on a large boulder. His golden hair was still perfect, and there was a tiny smudge of dirt across one pale cheek.
Meanwhile, I was pretty sure my hair was a twisted rat's nest and the rest of me was a ball of dirt and sweat. Nylian's general perfection was either an elf thing or a Nylian thing. I was still figuring out which it was. Either way, I kind of hated him.
Maybe it was that "hero halo" that I'd heard about in some books, where the hero was untouchable and when things went wrong for him, it resulted in things going even more right for him later.

Nylian himself was the first person to actually bring up the fact that he inteded for Adam to be his one and only. And only then, Adam stated one time that he wouldn't tolerate anyone else (near the very end of the book). Even if Adam were blind to Nylian's advances he could/should have still ponder/ed his own feelings toward him more, IMO.

In the end the conclusion happened rather quickly and the traitor revealed himself rather stupidly. If it were me I would have bid my time as nobody knew who I was and everybody who was initially involved in my plot was dead.

Some other reviewer also brought up a question I had at the end. Nylian once mentioned his age and that it was considered rather young. What is the lifespan of a generic human in this universe? Or will they just live happily ever after until Adams death and Nylian's about middle-aged? There are magicians in this world, does one have to be born with magical talent or can everybody become one? Jesper seemed like a random kid while his sister didn't seem to have any magical talent or amition to learn. Can this magical blood running through Adams veins prolong his life? Who knows? Maybe there is an epilogue somewhere explaing those things? Does someone know?

I loved the concept of an author getting sucked into a world of their own invention and living in the life of one of their characters, and what a wild and entertaining ride this book turned out to be for Adam and Nylian! It was fascinating to experience the magic of elves and orcs and wizards through Adam's eyes, and while he may have been the creator of the universe, its people had minds and hearts of their own. I was so entertained to see how Adam's carefully crafted plotlines fell apart in a matter of hours, and as he scrambled to keep up with the new twists and turns of the story I was eager to see how everything would play out. Nylian was still at the center of everything, but instead of a dashing prince with a harem of female love interests, he was much more focused on avenging his twin brother and flirting with Adam at every chance he got. The two of them trekked all over the kingdoms in their quest for answers, sometimes on their own and sometimes joined by a pair of wizard and mercenary siblings. Adam was super oblivious to Nylian's flirting to the point that I wanted to scream at him to open his eyes, but much to my delight Nylian took matters into his own hands before I could get too frustrated. The two of them had insanely hot chemistry once they stopped dancing around each other, and I fell head-over-heels in love with their relationship pretty much right away. Nylian was every bit the sexy, dazzling prince Adam had written him to be, but with 100% of his energy directed at Adam's pleasure. Nylian's drive to get answers about his brother's murderer pushed the main storyline forward, and I have to say that some of the reveals in this book were pretty shocking for me. I love how much Jocelynn Drake kept me on my toes, even if it led my favorite characters into some pretty dicey situations along the way. By the time Adam and Nylian reached the end of their story, they'd been through all the ups, downs, lefts, and rights of a proper quest and had more than earned a breather from the chaos. I was thrilled by how happily their journey ended, and while a part of me will always be curious about the life Adam left behind, it's safe to say that he's found his home and his true love.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

I guess I just don't like Jocelynn Drake -- I tried to read some other popular books by this author but found her writing style to be extremely boring. Other reviewers are calling this an imaginative work, but tbh I've read almost a dozen similar danmei or Japanese light novels with a similar plot but better quality of romance and simply more enjoyable to read. In short, this book was inspired by some BL isekai and "transported into BG romance novel world" danmei but the execution was lacking. In my honest opinion, if you like this type of trope, where the male MC enters a world that's based on a novel or game and ruins the original straight romance, you would enjoy the authentic stuff more. I'd recommend reading (these are all indexed on Novelupdates):
-After Becoming a Spare Tire, I Was Targeted by the Villain and the Male Lead at the Same Time (my preferred favorite)
-Faking Straight
-As the Minor Gay Rival in Het Novels
-Quick Transmigration: Seducing Straight Men (more of a porn with plot book)
-Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil (probably the best written and most famous out of this list)
-The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love (a danmei classic in this type of trope)
-Transmigrated into the World of “Demon Lord Wu Zun”
-Who Said This Was an Otome Game! (the original fan TL is better than what is listed currently on NU, you can read the archive here).
Or if you can read Chinese (or know how to use machine translation to read the original version) you can search the "heroine/female lead" tag on the Chinese danmei reviews site called boluobiji.

I’m a sucker for the isekai trope, and this one delivers on that promise with flair: Adam wakes up in his own fantasy draft (he's the author who created such world), just as he meets Nylian, the exiled elf prince framed for treason. Add political intrigue and a race against time, and you’ve got more than enough to keep me hooked.

But while the bones of the story are solid, the pacing stumbles. Key stretches of the journey are skipped over, leaving emotional and logistical gaps that make some turns feel abrupt. Adam’s modern knowledge barely matters; his real role is comic relief: charming at first, but increasingly repetitive, leaning more on crude quips than wit. At times, the humor undercuts the stakes instead of lightening them.

The romance suffers from the same rush. Nylian’s arc, from guarded exile to vulnerable partner, is nuanced and believable. Adam’s, less so: his shift from straight to deeply devoted bisexual happens overnight, with little psychological buildup. Their love feels earnest, but it’s declared before we’ve truly seen the quiet intimacy that would make it feel earned, as a slow-burn devotee, i did miss the emotional progression. The biggest missed opportunity? Tone balance. The story tackles exile, betrayal, and trauma, but wraps it all in relentless comedy that sometimes trivializes its own gravity.

And yet… I kept reading. Because despite its flaws, there’s warmth between the MCs. Their loyalty, banter, and growing trust land with surprising emotional weight. Also, the core plot: road trip, redemption, reclaiming honor; is engaging and well-structured, and keeps you engaged if you're a sucker of such tropes.

I have been reading and enjoying Jocelynn Drake’s Kings of Chaos series, happily devouring them as I dive deeper into the world. When I saw a standalone from the author, I was curious. While I Destroyed the Elf Prince’s Harem is the thirteenth book in the Fortune Favors the Fae series, you do not need to have read any of the other books in the series. Each is a standalone, and I went into this having only read The Wolf’s [Un]Lucky Fae.

I will be entirely honest and say that I Destroyed the Elf Prince’s Harem is a story that had me conflicted. I feel this is one of those cases where my humour did not match with the story and due to that it did not hit as hard as it could have. While there were clearly many moments that were intended to be humorous, they did not hit that note for me, which meant I found them to be a bit repetitive. While I was able to overlook this for much of the book because I was interested in the bigger picture, I do feel the romance was lacking somewhat in this story. I felt like it was a bit forced, which took away some of the enjoyment I was getting. Overall, the fantasy elements had me intrigued, yet the romance meant it missed the mark to make me love it. Combined with my humour not matching, and this was not as strong as it could have been for me.

All in all, I feel this is one of those cases where I was not quite the right reader for the story. While I enjoyed elements, I did not love the whole the way many seem to love it.
