In the Temple Shadows is Book One in a series of novels channeled through the tarot cards by noted intuitive Kelly O’Hearn—the first of its kind! In this sexy past life romance, sometimes happily ever after takes more than one lifetime. Meet Sarah Fuller. It’s her 40th birthday and things are starting to get weird. Is it deja vu? A midlife crisis? Nervous breakdown? Who is this dark, handsome stranger she feels like she’s met before? Not on Fifth Avenue or through her luxury fragrance company but, like, many lifetimes ago? Her husband, her best friend, her everyone seems to think they know what’s best for her these days. Sarah’s always been a skeptic, but when she meets this intriguing psychic who tells her she might have been a Pharaoh’s lover and powerful mystic in ancient Egypt, thousands of years ago, it feels so right that she’s determined to find out more.
“I was given early access to the manuscript of Arcanum, and I was immediately immersed in this unique and sassy book! It's like Carrie Bradshaw meets Cleopatra. The tension and drama between the characters was enthralling, both in their current lives and their past lives. I can’t wait for the second book in the series!” K. Lewis
If you like stories having to do with reincarnation, magic, and history - and if you love that romance is thrown in - this is the book for you. I happen to love stories like this, especially the fact that the main character, Sarah, is a 40 year old woman who doesn't have it all put together. Sarah is a perfumer who has her own company in New York. She is married with twins and seems to be in the right place. However she isn't happy and can't figure out why she has been feeling off - with her marriage especially. When she celebrates her birthday and meets Harry, she feels like she has connected to someone special. A quick Tarot reading shows her she does indeed have some major things to discover about herself and she must make the decision to either run with it or let it go. This is the first part of the book - and the only reason I have given it 4 stars. There are two stories being told, one with Sarah and one with another woman from another time, Sarrah. I was at first confused but I caught on quickly.
Sarrah, who lives in Egypt during the time of the Pharaohs, is being introduced to court because she has magical abilities. The Pharaoh wants someone to help guide his son, Meti, and Sarrah is the perfect person. She not only can see what is to come but she can also manipulate events to work in Meti's favor. Once Meti and Sarrah connect, nothing can stop them. Until Sarrah begins to sense a connection with someone else.
The book goes back and forth between the stories and it does get a little convoluted. Once you catch onto the writing style, though, it begins to flow. I loved all of the Egyptian history and O'Hearn really knows how to create beautiful imagery. The tension is there throughout and I became immersed in all of it. I have to say that I could have had a book with just Sarrah's story but having both made it interesting. She connected both plots nicely at the end and I could easily read a sequel. I can't wait to see what O'Hearn writes next.
Sunday Fun Day! I am thrilled to declare that I've discovered a five-star gem. Words cannot express how much I relished this book. Already, I've earmarked three friends whom I must recommend it to. Yes, I'm that enthusiast—if something captivates me, you'll undoubtedly hear about it.
The tale opens with Sarah navigating a midlife crisis, further complicated by the arrival of a dark, mysterious stranger who triggers a sense of déjà vu. Her encounters with a psychic, who unveils her past as a Pharaoh’s lover and a mystic in ancient Egypt, infuse the narrative with layers of intrigue and fascination. Sarah's evolution from skeptic to believer is enthralling, albeit slightly hurried, driven by her profound longing to unravel her past.
O'Hearn's premise is spellbinding, deftly weaving together past and present lives to offer readers an immersive experience. The meticulously researched historical and mystical elements vividly depict ancient Egypt, enriching the storyline with depth and authenticity.
Nevertheless, the book does have its drawbacks. The pacing can be erratic, leading to moments where the plot loses momentum. Secondary character development, particularly of Sarah’s husband and best friend, feels somewhat shallow, often serving as mere plot devices rather than fully realized individuals. Admittedly, I found Sarah’s best friend more endearing than her husband, and the slower segments did little to detract from my overall enjoyment.
Sarah’s journey is undeniably compelling, yet her rapid acceptance of the psychic’s revelations may seem implausible at times. A deeper exploration of her internal conflict and skepticism would have added layers to her character arc. Furthermore, while the romantic elements add excitement, they occasionally overshadow the more profound themes of self-discovery and spiritual awakening.
In conclusion, "Arcanum: In The Temple Shadows" marks a promising debut for Kelly O’Hearn’s series. It offers a refreshing twist on the romance genre, blending past lives and tarot into a narrative that will appeal to enthusiasts of history, mysticism, and love alike. Personally, as someone not typically drawn to historical romance, I found myself thoroughly engaged throughout, making it a journey well worth embarking on.
I think this was an interesting read and I loved the concept but the pacing was off. I wish the author had named her character in ancient Egypt something else besides Sarrah. I ended up losing interest and I don’t think I’d continue the series but again I liked the concept and this might be for someone else!
Arcanum In The Temple Shadows by Kelly O’Hearn, is the first book in a new series in book one is about Sarah she’s 40 years old owns her own perfume company in Manhattan in despite a gorgeous husband and two perfect children she is unsatisfied. All her life she has been drawn to the Egyptian wing at the national museum and her husband throws her a surprise 40th birthday party there, she meets a man named Harry and all the lines blur. Next we meet Sarah in ancient Egypt she has many mystical abilities she is a part of the royal court unlike most royal families Sarah‘s also has intrigue and dangerous situations I love the way the author gave ancient Egypt Sarah similar ties to modern day Zara. I found the story very complex and on paper I should’ve absolutely loved the book I don’t know if it was the African setting but I just couldn’t get into this book despite the great detail the awesome romance it just wasn’t a book I found myself enjoying. The story was plausible as far as time travel and time slip novels go. I just don’t think every book is going to be for every reader and this one wasn’t for me and although I didn’t love it The way others have I may truly enjoy the second book I wasn’t over the moon about the first but would still recommend it as it’s well written has a good romance and a plausible story to tell. I want to thank the publisher for my free arc copy via NetGalley. Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Arcanum: In the Temple Shadows is one of those books that grows on you—soft at first, then suddenly drenched in longing, mysticism, past-life chaos, and a quiet kind of magic that keeps tugging at your sleeve long after you’ve finished. Kelly O’Hearn takes a premise that could easily veer into melodrama—tarot, reincarnation, forbidden ancient love—and instead spins it into something surprisingly soulful, sensual, and deeply human.
The story follows Sarah Fuller, a successful Manhattan perfumer whose life looks “perfect” on paper—husband, twins, a thriving business, the whole glossy package. But as she hits forty, the sheen starts to slip. She feels off, restless, inexplicably drawn toward something she can’t name. And then—of course—it gets weird. Déjà vu, strange dreams, a magnetic stranger named Harry who feels less like a new acquaintance and more like someone she’s known for centuries. Literally.
From there, the story unfurls into two intertwined timelines: Sarah’s present-day unraveling, and Sarrah’s ancient Egyptian life as a mystic, healer, and companion to a future Pharaoh. This dual storyline is the novel’s beating heart—lush, atmospheric, and brimming with tension. The Egyptian chapters especially shine; O’Hearn writes ancient court life with such sensory richness that you can practically feel sand under your feet and incense curling through the air. Sarrah’s role as both guide and forbidden lover to Prince Meti is compelling, but it’s her connection to the general Hasim (the Egyptian echo of Harry) that really sparks.
What surprised me most is how fun this book can be. It’s dramatic and spiritual, yes, but also sassy and modern. Think Cleopatra meets midlife crisis meets cosmic romance. Somehow, O’Hearn makes that cocktail work.
That said, the book isn’t without bumps. The pacing occasionally wobbles, especially early on, when the story is still finding its balance between timelines. Sarah’s shift from skeptic to believer happens quickly—almost too quickly for someone whose entire identity is rooted in the sensory, scientific precision of perfumery. And a few side characters (especially her husband and best friend) feel more like set pieces than people. Are they annoying? Sometimes. Did I want more depth from them? Definitely.
But honestly? These are small things in an otherwise captivating debut. The emotional throughline—two souls colliding again and again across centuries—is handled with surprising tenderness. The tarot framing is clever without being gimmicky. And the reincarnation thread, while familiar, feels refreshed through O’Hearn’s grounding in intuition, mysticism, and women stepping into power.
By the end, the book leaves you with that delicious feeling of unfinished business—because of course this is only book one. The epilogue hints at another lifetime, another collision, another chapter in this eternal tug-of-war between destiny and desire.
If you like your romance with a twist of magic, a dash of history, and a whole lot of cosmic “we meet again,” Arcanum is absolutely worth diving into. It’s seductive, atmospheric, and unexpectedly moving. I’m already waiting to see where Sarah, Sarrah, and their many lives go next.
In Arcanum: In the Temple Shadows, Kelly O'Hearn inaugurates her tarot-channelled series with a literary architecture that braids contemporary disquiet with a reimagined ancient Egypt, situating both within a broader inquiry into desire, spiritual rupture, and the seductions of an alternate self. Rather than reproducing the contrasts between present-day Sarah Fuller and her earlier incarnation, the novel reframes their entanglement as a recursive meditation on identity—one in which emotional estrangement, marital fatigue, and the uncanny recognition of an enigmatic stranger are not merely plot devices but signals of a cosmology structured around repetition and revelation. O’Hearn’s dual narrative cultivates a sensorially dense atmosphere: the modern world of luxury fragrances and therapeutic interventions is juxtaposed with a mythologised temple environment where ritual and political precarity converge. The effect is less about historical fidelity than about the construction of a symbolic terrain in which the protagonist confronts the instability of the life she believed she inhabited.
What distinguishes the novel, however, is its deployment of wish-fulfilment romance as a deliberate aesthetic strategy rather than an incidental embellishment. Both Sarah and her ancient counterpart, Sarrah, navigate forms of overdetermined power—economic, spiritual, erotic—and the text foregrounds this abundance not as implausibility but as a constitutive feature of the genre’s escapist architecture. Sarrah’s arc, more fully elaborated than Sarah’s, offers a relatively complete emotional and narrative trajectory, rendering the ancient plotline the more dynamically realised of the two and positioning the present-day storyline as a hinge for the developing series. While the book is unconcerned with archaeological precision—fictional pharaohs, anachronistic terminology, and hybridised naming conventions populate its world—these liberties function within the novel’s broader commitment to atmospheric fantasy. O’Hearn sustains a tone of mystical immediacy, amplified through tactile imagery and charged interpersonal encounters, producing a reading experience that privileges emotional intensity over empirical rigour.
Halfway through the narrative’s unfolding, the novel’s internal logic becomes clearer: it is less an excavation of the past than a dramatisation of how the past intrudes upon the present with the force of unprocessed longing. As the foundation of a series that continues in Arcanum: Whispers in the Forest, ARCANUM: IN THE TEMPLE SHADOWS operates as both an initiation and a suspension, offering enough narrative resolution in Sarrah’s timeline to satisfy while leaving Sarah’s conflicts deliberately unresolved. For readers drawn to romance fiction, metaphysical entanglements, and richly embellished reimaginings of antiquity, O’Hearn’s debut is a must-read.
In the Temple Shadows is the first book in the Arcanum series. Authored by Kelly O'Hearn, its sequel is Whispers In The Forest. The magical realism, 284-page book has two parts where part one has sixteen chapters whereas part two has twelve chapters.
Earlier on, the book introduces its major characters: empress Sarah/Sarrah, emperor Harry/Hasim, hierophant Max/Meti, high priestess Leyla/Lilu, and the devil Ken/Khufu. “She has been here before—but when?” Thus starts the contemporary romance book.
Sarah Fuller, a 40-year-old New York City resident in a 15-year-long marriage, questions reality after inexplicable dreams and split-second illusions, especially “flashes of all the women she might have been, all the versions of herself that she could have been…had been those women…she’d experienced their entire lifetimes, passions, lovers, tragedies.”
Thus, when she meets energy reader Leyla who reads her cards for the first time “since being in my grandmother’s dressing room when I was a girl…young…mom didn’t really approve of that kind…I’d like for you to talk me through the reading…Arcanum is the name of my fragrance company…chose Arcanum to honor my grandmother,” it transforms the midlife crisis-hit woman’s life.
Tarot card reader Leyla remarks she’s “in the eye of the storm…he—is deeply connected to your past, even though he’s not in your present…tied to your future…a powerful presence in your life…you may not know him yet.”
So, when the book switches to ancient Egypt—seer, mind reader and intuitive Sarrah’s lifetime alongside her creepy, sly and urban planner Uncle Khufu and her mother who “wanted everything to be as pristine…when reunited with her husband in the afterlife…young Meti, son of the Pharaoh…become Meti’s counselor and advisor…Meti…would become the Pharaoh…share Meti’s bed…” —the reader instantly gets the drift of the present-day New York City and ancient Egyptian narratives.
No spoilers! You should read this book to find out what, and how it, happens.
A grippingly creative narrative, In the Temple Shadows’ duality of ancient-and-current events examines déjà vu and reincarnation through the lens of magical realism.
Book Review Title: Arcanum: In the Temple Shadows Author: Kelly O’Hearn
Rating:5/5
Review:
👉Some books take you on a journey. Arcanum: In the Temple Shadows by Kelly O’Hearn takes you across lifetimes.
👉This dazzling debut is unlike anything I’ve read before—a deeply sensual, spiritually charged, and emotionally layered story that blends tarot, mysticism, and reincarnation with a sweeping romance that echoes through time. As the first in a series channeled through tarot, this novel introduces a bold new voice in metaphysical fiction, and I am HERE for it!
👉We meet Sarah Fuller, a successful fragrance entrepreneur living the dream in New York City—or so it seems. As her 40th birthday arrives, Sarah’s world begins to unravel in mysterious, surreal ways. Visions. Déjà vu. A strange pull toward a man she’s never met—but somehow has always known. Suddenly, she’s questioning her life, her choices, and even her soul’s origin. Is it all in her head… or is it something far deeper?
👉Enter the mystic: a psychic who reveals to Sarah that she once lived as Sarrah, a powerful mystic in Ancient Egypt and lover to a Pharaoh. That revelation triggers a journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening, as Sarah begins to remember a past life filled with passion, intrigue, sacred power, and deep soul ties that still echo in her present.
👉The dual timeline is absolutely mesmerizing. O’Hearn moves effortlessly between Sarah’s sleek modern life and Sarrah’s majestic past, creating a story that feels both grounded and mythic. The emotional resonance between the two lives is breathtaking, and the love story that binds them? Pure magic. It’s intense, fated, and so incredibly romantic. Think destiny, reincarnation, and a connection that defies space and time.
👉What makes this novel stand out is its depth. O’Hearn doesn’t just tell a story—she channels energy. You can feel the spiritual current pulsing through every chapter, inviting readers to question their own soul paths and past lives. And yet, it never feels heavy or overwhelming—just beautifully woven, heartfelt, and truly captivating.
ARCANUM: IN THE TEMPLE SHADOWS by Kelly O’Hearn is an atmospheric, richly imagined fantasy that pulls readers in from the very first page. O’Hearn excels at crafting a world steeped in ancient secrets, forbidden power, and the weight of destiny. The temple setting, both sacred and unsettling, acts as a character in its own right, and the author’s attention to sensory detail creates an immersive reading experience. Shadows, whispers, and symbolic artifacts weave through the narrative, developing a tone that is both eerie and compelling. The pacing is confident, blending action with introspective moments that deepen the central mystery and the protagonist’s emotional journey.
What truly elevates this book is O’Hearn’s character work. The protagonist is layered and believable, torn between personal desire and the heavy burden imposed by forces both seen and unseen. Supporting characters carry distinct motives and histories, adding tension and complexity as alliances are tested and revelations unfold. The interplay between faith, power, and self-discovery anchors the story, giving it a resonant depth that lingers long after the final chapter. O’Hearn’s dialogue is natural and purposeful, and her worldbuilding, rooted in mythology, ritual, and subtle magic, is simultaneously fresh and timeless.
Arcanum: In the Temple Shadows is an impressive blend of dark fantasy, adventure, and emotional nuance. Fans of immersive worlds, slow-burning tension, and character-driven storytelling will find much to savor here. O’Hearn delivers not just an engaging plot, but a thoughtful meditation on trust, destiny, and the cost of uncovering truths long kept in the dark. This is a standout addition to the fantasy genre and a promising entry in what feels like the start of an expansive and captivating series.
A gripping dark fantasy filled with ancient secrets, vivid worldbuilding, and a compelling journey of destiny and discovery. Perfect for fans of mysterious temples and character-driven magic.
"She didn't believe in fate; she created fate. She could heal, and she could slay."
The first two things that caught my attention immediately with this book were Egypt and Tarot. Being passionate about reincarnation stories, fated stars, and destiny (since I was a child I fell in love with Sailor Moon, as an adult Outlander, and my aunt's passion for tarot and the art around these decks), I couldn't pass this one.
The author had the perfect idea of using tarot to write (guide) our main character through her issues, doubts, and story. The moment we open the book we see five tarot cards but not just that, each card has two names, one for the present where Sarah is a modern NYorker talented, beautiful, and successful mother and married woman who still keeps her grandmother's teachings close to her heart turning her fragrance company into an international business that respects Earth and people's emotions.
She is turning 40 (very relatable), and she is feeling lost more than ever. Doing what society expects from her has worked so far, but it doesn't bring her fulfillment anymore. When we read the second name (card: The Empress), we notice Sarrah, an Egyptian girl in ancient times meeting the pharaoh's son and being instructed to seduce him by her (not so kind) uncle. It is full of intrigue and games of power and greed, too.
The tarot, reincarnation, and using senses and sensuality give an amazing mystical vibe to the entire book (present and ancient times).
Without any words and with only 5 cards and several names (whose characters we unveil slowly), we are captivated by this story and cast already. I couldn't stop. I wanted to know who they were in the past, who and what their relationship with Sarah was in the present.
Flashbacks to ancient Egypt, where a girl learns how to be a master in seduction in a world where men see themselves as gods? Yes, please. She protects femininity with elegance, intuition, intelligence, wisdom, and female power.
I love the character Leyla as well. After following some of the author's weekly readings on Instagram, how she lets the cards fly and pick themselves on their own, I recognize the author a lot in the way this character helps Sarah and teaches us about the deck and its meaning.
The first volume starts and ends the plotline of Egypt, giving us her entire life and events. It's slower to advance in the present, but I would say it's the perfect rhythm. It has a lot of romance (spice scenes with detail, not closed doors at all, as my fellow bookstagrammers say). The second book will take us to France 1500s, and we already get a hint with the epilogue.
Present and past lives intertwine, add more details, and complete each plotline, enriching our experience. Book one won't resolve the major plot (this is a series) but solidifies the path moving forward. Sarah already has a major character growth arc in book 1, so I am curious and excited to visit France 1500s next and see how the cast will play next.
This is apparently the first in a series. It is the story of Sarah Fuller, wife and mother of two, who runs a very successful business based out of Manhattan. She has been married to her husband Carl for a long time and seems to have the perfect life.
But Sara is finding herself more and more dissatisfied with her marriage as her fortieth birthday approaches. Her husband surprises her with a birthday party in one of her favorite places – the Egyptian wing of the Metropolitan Museum. Sara has been drawn to this part of the Met – and specifically the Temple of Dendur – since childhood.
On this night, Sarah takes a breather from her party and visits the Temple alone – only to meet a man named Harry Aiken. Although he is a stranger, Sarah and Harry both experience a magnetic attraction unlike anything either has experienced before, throwing Sarah into a tailspin.
Now the story changes to ancient Egypt, where a young girl named Sarra, who has mystical and medicinal gifts/powers, as well as the ability to read minds, is introduced to Pharaoh's court as a potential companion for Prince Meti, heir to the throne. She becomes his lover, his teacher, and his protector – in short, his everything. Unfortunately, she meets Hasim, the General in charge of Pharaoh's army, and they both experience the same attraction as Sarah and Harry in the present time.
The story alternates between these two star-crossed couples, leading to the obvious conclusion that they have known each other throughout time.
The epilogue seems to actually be the beginning of another of their meetings in France in the 16th century. This may be a series based upon a number of reincarnations. If so, I'm sure the following books will prove interesting.
In Arcanum: In the Temple Shadows, Kelly O’Hearn delivers a genre-defying debut that blends mysticism, romance, and past-life intrigue into a captivating narrative. As the first book in a groundbreaking series channeled through tarot, O’Hearn introduces readers to a story that feels as ancient as it is modern—rich with esoteric insight and emotional depth.
The novel follows Sarah Fuller, a successful fragrance entrepreneur who finds her seemingly perfect life unraveling on the cusp of her 40th birthday. What begins as an identity crisis quickly morphs into a journey of spiritual awakening as Sarah begins experiencing vivid connections to another time and place—Ancient Egypt, where she lived a past life as Sarrah, a powerful mystic entwined in courtly love and royal intrigue. O’Hearn masterfully draws parallels between Sarah’s modern struggles and Sarrah’s ancient fate, building a layered narrative that explores destiny, intuition, and soul connections that transcend time. The dual timeline is handled with remarkable finesse, offering a lush and sensuous depiction of ancient Egypt while maintaining the emotional grounding of Sarah’s contemporary life. The romantic thread that ties both lives together is as alluring as it is mysterious, raising questions about the nature of love, karma, and the echoes of our past selves.
O’Hearn’s writing is evocative, her pacing compelling, and the spiritual undertones are seamlessly woven into the storyline without ever feeling heavy-handed. Arcanum is not just a story—it’s an invitation to reflect on the deeper truths we carry within us. An ambitious and enthralling start to a unique series, this novel will resonate with fans of metaphysical fiction, historical romance, and anyone intrigued by the possibility of lives lived beyond the veil of memory
Arcanum : In The Temple Shadows is a fascinating story about past lives, reincarnation, fate, and magic. I knew I had to read this book when I read that the author had channeled this story about her past life through Tarot Cards. Channeling, divination, and the occult are fascinating subjects and I believe anyone who reads this book will feel a sense of destiny about it.
The story follows Sarah Fuller, a perfumer who has become bored with her life, until she has a Tarot reading that helps her to make sense of the visions from the past she is having. This book is a dual timeline story, one set in present day New York City and the other in Ancient Egypt, following the soul and heart of Sarah as an Egyptian mystic, muse, and lover to a powerful Pharaoh. It is clear that Egyptian Sarrah wants nothing more than to awaken her gifts and be a powerful woman as does present day Sarah who must learn how to take back her power, listen to her intuition, and follow her heart. I loved the juxtaposition between the past life and present life of Sarah and the connecting threads that were woven to both lives. The beguiling ways the past, present, and future aligns for Sarah kept me on the edge of my seat in wonder and anticipation as to when and how she would reconnect with her soul mate, destiny, and power. The story was mystical and aroused a magical sensory experience with great attention to detail that only a channeled story could describe.
I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to read the rest of the Arcanum series.
Thank you to the author/publisher for providing me with a free arc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
ARCANUM: IN THE TEMPLE SHADOWS is an engaging blend of romance, mysticism, and past-life intrigue that pulls the reader in from the start. O’Hearn’s decision to channel the story through tarot imagery gives the narrative a fresh angle, and it works surprisingly well. The transitions between modern-day New York and ancient Egypt feel smooth and purposeful. It’s a premise that feels both familiar and entirely new.
Sarah Fuller’s story is especially compelling as she navigates déjà vu, spiritual confusion, and emotions she can’t quite explain. She's written as a woman on the brink of rediscovery, and her journey feels relatable even as it dips into the metaphysical. The supporting cast, both present and past incarnations, adds richness and tension to the story. Their dynamics help ground the more mystical elements of the book.
What stands out most about ARCANUM: IN THE TEMPLE SHADOWS is its atmosphere. Rich sensory descriptions make the world feel vivid and immersive. The book's ending clearly sets the stage for the series to grow. Overall, it’s a thoughtful and imaginative introduction to a world where history, destiny, and desire overlap.
Thank you to Kelly O’Hearn and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
Arcanum was…weird. I thought the premise sounded super interesting - the history, the past lives, the soulmate aspect all drew me in. But the whole book just felt like a weird amalgamation of a bunch of different ideas that didn’t fit well together. The time spent in the past were far more interesting than the present, as present Sarah felt annoying and wildly two dimensional.
I would have much rather read a book solely focused on one incarnation of these characters, and then having the very end be the next lives they lived (and on and on for however many books this is going to be). Instead it was just a chaotic kind of mess with characters who spoke to each other in the way I’ve never heard people communicate in my life, and an abrupt cliffhanger that, rather than make me desperate to get my hands on the next book, reaffirmed my decision to not read any more of these books.
*Spoilers below*
POV: single third person
You can expect: past lives, soulmates, reincarnation, tarot, mysticism.
Kelly O’Hearn’s ARCANUM: IN THE TEMPLE SHADOWS combines dark fantasy, history, and romance. It is written for readers who enjoy character-driven stories with rich detail. The novel uses a clear and honest style to connect two timelines through destiny and reincarnation.
The story follows two women: Sarah Fuller, a modern Manhattan CEO facing a midlife crisis, and Sarrah, her counterpart in Ancient Egypt, who is a mystic caught in temple politics and forbidden power. O’Hearn’s strength lies in worldbuilding, especially her vivid description of Ancient Egypt, which feels alive and atmospheric.
At the heart of the book are the strong ties between characters across centuries, especially the destined love between Harry and Hasim. Themes of self-discovery, fate, and the cost of truth run throughout the story. The characters are written with depth, making them feel familiar and real.
Inspired by the Tarot, this debut novel blends mystery, romance, and historical fantasy. It is fast-paced and engaging, though the modern storyline ends unresolved, leaving room for the next book in the series.
This was an interesting book with two great stories, however, I didn't like the way it was written. It starts with Sarah in current times and the author gives us a great story that draws you in immediately. Then, the book changes to Ancient Egypt and we get to know Zara and her perilous life. We also meet Harry/Hasan in both stories. Each time period was so well written and I loved each one. The problem is - that too much time was spent in each time period so it felt like I was reading two different books. If the author had given us a few chapters of one period then a few chapters of the other one, switching back & forth more often, I would have given this book 5 stars. But because there were too many chapters at a time, I got irritated by the "interruption” of the time period I was reading because I was deeply embedded. I would like to read the next one, but I'm hoping I don't get more of the same or I will quit reading it and that would be a shame.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing an eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Gripping plot! O'Hearn writes a compelling story that defies time and reality. Her main character, Sarah, is truly a multi-dimensional character and she works the same magic on the other characters so much so, you'll come to feel like you know them up close and personal. This is a book that transports readers through time and space and even tackles subjects like reincarnation . She hits it out of the park wth well-researched historical facts as well. In ancient Egypt a young girl with mystic powers gets caught up in a forbidden romance while in modern day a successful business woman is trying to come to terms with the feelings a strange man is stirring up in her. O'Hearn deftly flip flops through both worlds all while giving way to stunning narrative that will captivate readers. There is just so much this story accomplishes that the author make it look easy. One thing is certain: read this book for a surefire thrill ride. I've already begun the second book and so far it's just as enthralling. Thank you Kelly O'Hearn for weaving together such a magical world.
really had a hard time with this book. I almost quit reading it and then picked it back up twice. Netgalley was nice enough to let me read it so I felt I should finish it. Now I see in the description on goodreads it is described as a sexy past life romance. On Netgalley it said she meets someone she may have known before and there is an intriguing psychic and Sarah may have lived in ancient Egypt. I’m fascinated by ancient Egypt and love books with psychics and tarot readers so I was excited to grab this book. Unfortunately for me I really dislike romance stories and there was way too much “sexy romance” for me. I really didn’t Cara for Sarah she came across as a very spoiled woman. If I had known this book was more romance I wouldn’t have chose it. I did finish it but I did not care for it.
ANCIENT EGYPT✔ MAGICAL/MYSTICAL ELEMENTS ✔ STAR CROSSED LOVERS✔ SOULMATES✔ REINCARNATION✔ DESTINY✔ TAROT✔ SEXY ROMANCE✔
Arcanum: In The Temple Shadows has a uniquely intersting and engaging dual timeline/parallel story telling structure that captures the essence of both ancient and modern worlds, along with present-day Sarah and her past life as Zara in Ancient Egypt.
However, at times the transitions between past and present felt a bit jarring. Yeah, the detailed depiction of each timeline adds depth and intrigue but the long stretches in each period kinda disrupts the reader's flow.
Despite that, the book's mystical elements and strong connection between the two lifetimes make it worthwhile reading for those interested in themes of destiny, reincarnation, and the occult.
This story takes place in two time periods. In ancient Egypt, a young girl with mystic powers was brought to be a guide for Pharaoh's son. She ends up being drawn into a forbidden romance.
In Manhattan, a successful business woman celebrates her 40th birthday and begins questioning her life. She meets a man that she feels like she has known before and can't get him out of her mind.
The author does an amazing job of flipping back and forth between the two time periods and slowly revealing the connection between the two stories.
This book provides detailed descriptions of Egyptian life, making it a must for any who love this time period. It also has elements of the occult, which add another layer to the romances. It is fast-paced, making it hard to put down.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this work in exchange for my honest review.
As a first book in a series, O"Hearn does a great job of setting up the world, establishing characters, and setting up for what comes next. I enjoyed the weaving of past and present, the mystical elements, and the clearly well-researched history. I like the idea of the plot and look forward to reading what happens next.
I did think the pacing seemed off at times, and this hindered some of the enjoyment while reading. A few times the story was dragging, and I had to put the book down and come back to it later. I also felt that some of the character development, particularly the supporting characters, was superficial.
Arcanum: In the Temple of Shadows is a great blend of romance and history, spanning between the present and past for the main protagonist, Sarah Fuller. The other manages to blend the two different versions of this character seamlessly between the time periods, expanding on the idea of reincarnation and people having preplanned destinies and even personalities and interests. The jump to Egypt brought enrichment to the story and the author brought the time period to life through vivid descriptions, with a particular focus on scents. You can almost smell and feel everything you're reading and the author sucks you into the story from the very first chapter, leaving you wanting to know more about Sarah and those connected to her present and past.
Thank you to Netgalley and to the publishers for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book. I am not sure how I feel about this book. There was so much of it that I loved and that drew me in. I loved the star crossed lovers theme and how the story went back and forth between Sarah, a women who is a loveless marriage who crosses path with her soul mate and Sarrah, a slave in Egypt who positions herself as the confidant of the pharaoh but really is in love with her soul mate. The parts of the story I wasn’t crazy about were at times it was a bit repetitive and the ending. I understand this is book 1 of a series but the ending felt random and disappointing.
Arcanum: In The Temple Shadows offers an intriguing premise with its blend of magic and adventure. I appreciated the imaginative worldbuilding and the unique magical system that drew me in. The characters have potential, but I found some of their development lacking, which made it hard to connect with them on a deeper level. Additionally, the pacing occasionally dragged, especially during the exposition-heavy sections, which disrupted the flow of the story. Despite its flaws, the book has an engaging concept that kept me curious, and I can see it appealing to fans of fantasy looking for something new.
This is a fascinating read exploring the idea of an ancient Egyptian mystic reincarnated as a modern-day American fragrance CEO. The stories of the two characters are told in parallel as you discover the connections along the way. It was a quick read giving my interest, but I felt the ending to be a bit abrupt for the American. The story ended after the two modern characters recognized they were connected in some cosmic way, and I felt like it was missing some story. I found myself wondering, "So what?"
In short, it was a fun, fascinating read, but I wish there was more of a payoff at the end.
You know you’ve read a fantastic story when you finish it in one sitting. That was definitely the case here. There was something irresistibly addictive about this book—I couldn’t stop reading. It was immersive, intense, and just the right amount of mysterious. I loved the dual timelines and how they were seamlessly woven together.
I just loved Sarah’s character, fierce, strong, and so easy to root for. I don’t usually enjoy cliffhangers, but this one worked perfectly and left me genuinely excited for book two.

See how she gets on I received an advance copy from hidden gems and I want to review
A decently exciting time travel romance, Arcanum revolves around 2 women, modern day Sarah and ancient day Sarrah. They destinies are tied and the book goes back and forth between the two timelines to build the connection.
The concept of this book was really neat - star-crossed lovers reincarnated and drawn to one another in each lifetime. While I enjoyed the parts of the novel that took place in ancient Egypt, the parts of the book that took place present day were hard to get through as I didn’t like our main character, Sarah, at all.
