Snowdrops and Winterberry

Rate this book
Amid the upheaval of his newfound title, young Adam Boyce, now the Duke of Kielder, finds solace in the care of Robbie, his loyal nursemaid. Troubled by his past and bound by societal expectations, Adam finds his journey taking a hopeful turn when he’s welcomed into the embrace of Lord and Lady Jonquil at their esteemed estate, Brier Hill.

Within the serene surroundings of Brier Hill, Adam and Robbie encounter Howard Simpkin, a charismatic gardener whose presence adds a touch of enchantment to their days. Together with the Jonquils, Robbie and Howard embark on a mission to rekindle Adam’s youthful spirit. Through games, toys, and even a whimsical April Christmas celebration, they endeavor to lift the weight of responsibility from the young duke’s shoulders.

Yet as Adam flourishes, Robbie finds herself torn between duty and desire. With Adam growing up all too quickly, Robbie must decide between her budding affection for Howard and her unwavering commitment to Adam’s well-being.

In this tale of love, sacrifice, and redemption set against the backdrop of Sarah M. Eden’s well-beloved Gents series, Adam and his caregivers discover that healing and happiness await those who dare to seek them.

Georgian Christmas traditions, found family, and a sweet romance make Snowdrops and Winterberry a must read for Sarah M. Eden fans! I adored this novella. It was originally part of The Holly and the Ivy collection & is the endearing story of Adam aka the Duke of Kielder as a little eight-year-old boy. Now as it’s own novella with a fabulous new epilogue, this romantic, sweet story made me want to reread the Gents, Jonquil, & Lancaster series all over again!

After experiencing a disappointing Christmas alone at his boarding school, Adam is invited to spend time with Lady Julia & Lord Lucas Jonquil. This thoughtful pair along with his lovable nurse Robbie decide to make up for the Christmas holidays by having their own celebrations. Along with this achingly beautiful story of a loving couple trying to help a lonely, sad little boy, is the romance between Adam’s devoted nurse Robbie and Howard, the gardener whom Lucas hires to design his famous flower garden.

This story is the perfect backstory for the famous formidable Duke, & explains so much about his personality and his special relationship with the Jonquils. There are so many tender moments that nearly brought me to tears as this loving family and Adam’s devoted nurse show him the kindness & unconditional love he so desperately needs. Lady Jonquil especially tugged on my heartstrings with the way she was so sensitive to Adam’s needs. I also loved Lucas’s playful side as he teaches Adam how to play games and have fun.

Robbie & Howard have a delightful romance that starts out as enemies. As they work together in the garden & try to find ways to bring some Christmas cheer to Adam, they grow from friends to so much more. I loved their sweet romance & how Robbie was ever mindful of how it would affect Adam.

The epilogue is chef’s kiss! I loved seeing the little Jonquil boys especially Philip and their humorous interactions and antics.

This lovely, romantic, heartwarming story is a must that Sarah Eden fans will absolutely adore. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

My favorite book I've read this year!🤗❤️The Duke is one of my all time favorite characters, so being able to hear his backstory was such a treat!! Though heart wrenching... this book was also absolutely precious and I hated to see it come to an end. I would have loved to watch the rest of his growing up and also a follow up to sweet Nurse Robbie. I can't help but read Seeking Persephone for the 100th time now so I can get him back to his happily ever after. 🤗 These books are treasures! P.S.
The epilogue and glimpse into the young Jonquil family was my absolute favorite ❤️

Oh. My. Gosh. This bonus epilogue? I’m over here sobbing and laughing out loud, like a hot mess of a woman 🤧😂. Tween Adam? 😭😭 And don’t get me started on little Philip, Layton, baby Corbin, and Jason! 🥹 It’s almost too much for my heart to handle. Honestly, this epilogue could have been its own standalone story. It’s left me wanting to reread the entire series and do a deep dive into each relationship.

I adore this novella so much 😍. Adam’s bond with the Jonquils is so incredibly sweet 🥰—thank you again, Sarah, for letting me be a part of this launch team. I can’t wait to add this to my physical collection! 📚💖

This quote.. “The little lordling had taken to calling him “Adam Grace,” though Adam hadn’t determined yet whether the boy was genuinely confused by his parents
calling their visitor Adam while the staff all called him “Your Grace” or if the boy was using the misnomer in order to be funny.” …had me chuckling, as it instantly reminded me of Philip calling The Duke “Brother Adam" in *Charming Artemis*—a perfect moment that marks the start of Philip getting under Adam's skin. 😂

This tender little story made my heart swell with joy. I teared up a few times and grew to love little Duke Adam so much. I find myself very much wanting to read Seeking Persephone again now.
It was a lot of fun seeing bits of foreshadowing in the Jonquil boys’ personalities and what they would be like as adults someday. And as much as that was true for the Jonquils, it was especially true of Adam. There is so much about that dear child that I see in him as an adult, and where it stemmed from. That was quite enjoyable.
Also, Sarah writes children’s speech really well. It’s not always easy to accomplish that and too often older children seem either childish or too mature for the age, but she nails the tone every time.
The blossoming romance between Robbie and Howard was sweet and cute. I loved how Howard gave Robbie hope, and she learned to love things Howard cared about. It was a beautiful relationship, and I loved watching it grow between them.
The bonus epilogue may well be my favorite part of the story. It was so beautiful! And rounded out the story quite nicely.

There’s nothing I love more than to dive into the backstory of a beloved character. Why is the Duke of Kielder the way he is?

Adam has had a hard life and desperately needs to be loved, especially as he navigates a title at such a young age. This sweet story shows how the love, care, and acceptance of a found family lifts his burdens and the bonus story within the story, that of his nursemaid and the gardener, adds such a beautiful fullness to this tale.

Sarah M Eden knows just how to pluck one’s heartstrings while lifting characters off the pages with their vibrant personalities. This little gem hits the spot and firmly enmeshes Adam into the reader’s heart. The bonus epilogue is everything!

It was cute seeing little Adam and learning more about how Julia and Lucas became his surrogate parents. I do kind of wonder how he went from being so loved and involved in their family, to marrying a stranger and being so cold towards her at first? Maybe because of Lucas’s untimely death? And I can’t remember, but it didn’t seem like the Jonquil brothers really knew the Duke of Kielder in the books, so I’m curious at what point he stopped hanging out with them.

The epilogue was very sweet.

“Family is who you choose, Adam Boyce. Julia and I, we have chosen you. That makes you family to us.”

* Oh Lucas and Julia.. my heart 🫶
* Nurse Robbie is just so good!
* Aww Howard, you cutie
* Poor Robbie! What a seemingly impossible choice to make.
* I love the sweet and simple romance blooming between these two
* Not Adam being interested in Greek myths I am screaming!
* These are real tears leaking from my eyes
* And that bonus epilogue?? My heart could hardly take it

Oh this story just has my heart. Of course I loved the sweet romance between Robbie and Howard, but I absolutely loved all the glimpses into Adam. Into who he is and who he becomes as a Duke and a person.

Lucas and Julia Jonquil are some of my most favorite characters ever. And getting to see more of them and their goodness was so special.

You can’t go wrong with anything by Sarah and this Christmas yet not Christmas story is just so lovely!

“There is something peaceful and joyous in simply seeing the person you love.”

“I’d work with the devil himself if it brought my Adam joy.”

Thanks to the author and publisher for this ebook. A positive review wasn’t required and all opinions are my own.

I listened to this re-released novella (with a special bonus epilogue) and enjoyed it thoroughly again! The narration and gentle story telling make me feel as if I am back in time and experiencing life - both the good and difficult times with these characters.

This novella is particularly sweet in that you get to see Adam, the Duke of Kielder, as a boy who recently lost his father. Lucas and Julia, from the Gents series, take Adam under their wing and it is always a beautiful thing to see how Lucas and Julia take care of the people they love.

"He, who never hugged anyone, returned the offering. And for the first time in ages, he breathed."

ARC Review for Snowdrops and Winterberry by Sarah M Eden

Oh my heart is full to bursting! This sweet little novella is so full of heartbreak and healing, laughter and swooning, and also tender, sweet moments that will have you in a puddle of mush.
I first read this sweet novella last year in the spring. Don't ask me why I read it in the spring; except why not Christmas all year round?
Anyways, I fell in love with this story then, and this time around, fell in deeper love with it. The tender romance between a gardener and Adam's nursemaid is beautifully written and doesn't feel rushed like some novellas do.
Your heart can't help but ache for little Adam, Duke of Kielder, as the story progresses. But you can also see healing as he worms his way into the hearts of Lord and Lady Jonquil.
The moment when they are discussing toys, the fun surprises they do for each other, and the valuable lessons they teach dear Adam about family and love are just the sweetest.
This short novella, thought short, is also rich and vibrant in detail and lush imagery.
And the bonus epilogue is not to be missed. You get small glimpses into the early childhood of Philip Jonquil (my favorite Jonquil brother), Layton, and the twins, Corbin and Jason. And oh those brief glimpses were so adorable! That bonus epilogue is the icing on the cake!

Thank you to author and publisher for my ebook copy. All thoughts are my own.

“Family is who you choose,” Lucas said to him. “And we will choose you forever.”

Just a minute, let me grab my tissue…🥹🥹
I read this sweet story when it first came out in the anthology and I absolutely jumped at the opportunity to read it again. The bonus epilogue with Adam’s POV as a young teen is GOLD. Just pure bliss. I adore any opportunity I get to return to my Jonquil/ Lancaster family. They are some of my most cherished stories and ones I will reread the rest of my life.

The love story between nurse Robbie and Mr. Simpkin is a sweet and tender romance, and I loved the simple gestures. Plum pudding, forehead kisses, putting each others needs first… 🥹💙 just amazing.

Thank you, thank you for the chance to revisit this story and get the bonus epilogue. All opinions are my own and freely given.

Okay friends. If this isn't the most heart-warming little novella, I don't know what is.

Revisiting this story was just what I needed. I thoroughly enjoyed this story when it was originally published in The Holly and The Ivy anthology. Reading it again reminded me just how much I loved it! Plus that bonus epilogue ❤️

Robbie and Howard were so perfect for each other. Although their first impressions of each other were less than stellar, they realized fairly quickly how well they actually suited one another. I loved the time they spent in the garden, as well as Julia's meddling 😂 add in the magic of a Christmas celebration and some Twelfth Night shenanigans and you e got yourself one of the sweetest romances ever. Robbie and Howard were seriously the cutest.

If you haven't read this little novella yet it definitely deserves a spot on your TBR lists.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for the early copy; all thoughts are my own.

I really enjoyed seeing beloved characters come back in this story. To see a glimpse of Adam as a boy and Lucas and Julia before kids was a treat. I actually liked it more than the actual romance of the book. The bonus epilogue was also excellent! I would say you’ll have the most enjoyment if you are familiar with Adam and the Jonquil family series.

It was nice to hear more from the characters. Lucas Jonquil is a mythical figure. It was sad to hear how quickly Adam grew up. It took longer for me to read this novella. It just felt kind of repetitive and the love story was not the focus of the story so it didn’t have the detail to make it gripping. It was a nice story of people doing good and having compassion.

Adam‘s father has recently died. His mother sent him to school early. His nurse made is the only constant in his life, but in leaving for school, he loses her. Robbie, the nurse made, is very worried about Adam. He is growing up very fast and appears alone and unable to laugh. He also is very concerned about appearing “ridiculous”. Lord and lady Jonquil have invited him to their home. Robbie comes along, and Adam is hesitant at first. However, the Jonquill’s are very good at getting him to open up with Robbie’s assistance. Lord Jonquill is installing a garden on his property. The Head Landscaper is very protective of his project and mentions to Robbie that the child should be kept away. Adam is so unlikely to have needed that caution that Robbie is offended on his behalf she lets Howard Simpkin know. The two slowly open up to each other and like each other. When the Jonquil’s learn that Robbie was alone for Christmas, they decide to hold a Christmas in the spring for him. Howard and Robbie spend more time together and gathering the supplies for the Christmas party. Adam is surprised by the Christmas party. He is hesitant and doesn’t want to appear ridiculous. All the adults provided a present. Including Howard, who gave him a carved horse. He was very happy with the Christmas party. Soon he decides to hold a 12th night party to surprise Lady Jonquil. Once again, Howard and Robbie spend time together preparing for the party. Over the course of the book Adam latches on morals he’s being taught. Such as gentlemen care about the happiness of the ladies. Adam over hears a conversation between Robbie and Howard. He goes to Lady Jonquil who helps him understand that Robbie will soon be let go by Adam’s mother in favor of the governance. If she becomes the nurse made for Lady Jonquil’s baby due in several months, she will be able to see Adam when Adam comes for visits. However, she will miss Howard who has to travel around the country to his projects. Adam decides that he loves Robbie and doesn’t want to hurt her like one of the morals he’s learned. He cries with Lady Jonquil. He becomes the king for the 12th night party and is reflective. The Jonquils tell him he is part of their family because they choose each other. Robbie and Howard come for a visit the next winter to see Adam. Lady Jonquil has had her baby. It’s cement that he is part of their family, but Adam is needing constant reassurance. So in the epilogue he still insists they’re not family. By that time the Jonquil’s have four children. Adam is uncomfortable around other kids, but he renewed his relationship with the Jonquil’s.

“Family is who you choose…we have chosen you. That makes you family to us.”

If that line doesn’t make you want to grab a tissue, I don’t know what will! This novella is heartwarming, tear-jerking, and filled with so much sweetness that I’m pretty sure my heart is now a puddle of mush. 💖

Sarah Eden does it again with Snowdrops and Winterberry, where we follow little Adam Boyce, the young Duke of Kielder, as he’s invited to the Jonquil estate. At Brier Hill, Adam finds something he never expected: Christmas in April, joy, and a family he didn’t know he needed. And Robbie, his loyal nursemaid, finds herself torn between duty to Adam and her growing feelings for Howard, the charming gardener who knows how to woo a lady (and plant a mean winterberry).

There’s something magical about this story—it’s a novella, but it’s packed with so much emotion, from the lighthearted games and lessons about toys (seriously, the Jonquils teaching Adam about family is the sweetest thing ever) to the deeper moments of healing and love. Robbie and Howard’s romance doesn’t feel rushed (thank goodness!), and their dynamic brings a refreshing sweetness to the story. You can’t help but root for them.

Oh, and did I mention the bonus epilogue? 😭 I’m still not over the glimpses of Philip, Layton, Corbin, and Jason as little ones—it’s like the cutest sneak peek into the future of the Jonquil family! Philip already showing his mischievous side? I’m DONE.

This novella is the perfect start to the holiday season (or anytime, really—who says you can’t read Christmas stories in the fall?). It’s full of love, healing, and heart-melting moments that will leave you smiling through the tears.

What You’ll Love:
😤 Grumpy kid Duke (Adam’s serious child energy is peak)
🫠 Gardener swoon (Howard = 💘)
🎄 Christmas in April? Yes, please!
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Found family feels
😭 Bonus epilogue that’ll make you cry (in the best way)
🏡 The Jonquils’ chaotic but loving household
💖 Beautiful, tender moments of healing

This is a must-read for every Jonquil fan, and an unforgettable addition to Sarah Eden’s beautiful world. Get ready to laugh, cry, and fall in love all over again.

Most of this story was read through audio in the dual author book The Holly and The Ivy. When I knew I could have a book dedicated to just Adam with a Bonus Epilogue I was more than happy to get this beautiful book.

The Gents. Sigh. I sure love both the Jonquil and Lancaster family. And the love and patience Lord and Lady Jonquil gave to little Adam was the most heartwarming and wonderful thing ever. I hope we all would act when we know of a hard circumstance. Adam has been thrust into a world of titles and at a very young age he feels misplaced, but could never let that show. Oh the burdens he carries. Young Adam hasn’t been privvy to the carefree joys of youth.

I adored Nurse Robbie and how she too came to a hard choice and didn’t want to give up one love for another. I loved how things progressed for her and how she found complete joy and faith for what would happen in Adam’s future and her own.

You will find:
🌲Found Family and the joy of Love, Laughter, and Security.
🌲Sweet hikes and quality time
🌲Learning you can be loved for you and not your title
🌲Christmas Surprises and celebrating when together, not matter the month.
🌲Simplicity of Children’s Games
🌲The little carved Running Horse!

I didn’t know I needed this sweet time in young Adam’s life. Adam, The Duke of Kielder is fierce and untouchable and this sweet moment in his youth stays with him through everything. Thank you Sarah for writing such heartfelt eloquent stories.

I originally read this as part of The Holly and the Ivy Christmas collection and I'm thrilled that it's available as its own novella with an amazing epilogue! I love getting the backstory on characters and getting to see Adam, Duke of Kielder as a little boy is a treat. He was made a duke at such an early age and the responsibility of the title helped to shape him.

When young Adam Boyce, the newly titled Duke of Kielder, arrives at Brier Hill with his devoted nursemaid Robbie, he’s met with warmth and compassion from Lord and Lady Jonquil—and from Howard Simpkin, a kind-hearted gardener whose gentle charm brings unexpected light to their lives. As Adam slowly discovers joy through toys, laughter, and even an April Christmas, Robbie is faced with a bittersweet dilemma: remain solely dedicated to Adam’s care, or open her heart to the quiet romance blossoming with Howard.

I loved watching Adam as a little boy, with his nursemaid Robbie, spending time with Lord and Lady Jonquil. This story is so sweet and tugged at my heartstrings. I could read an entire book about Adam with Lucas and Julia Jonquil. Snowdrops and Winterberry is a beautiful novella. It’s a story of second chances and found family.

It's cute, but I have a little bone to pick. I like the Jonquils as much as anybody, but sometimes it's too much. Robbie has been a devoted and loving nurse/mother for Adams entire life. She agonized over ever leaving him and was willing to put everything she wanted aside so he wouldn't feel abandoned. But Julia is the one he calls mother? After a handful of fun days at her house where he mostly hung out with Robbie? And then the epilogue. So, he hasn't been spending much time with the Jonquils after all. I don't see why we're seeing their reunion and not a reunion with Robbie? Push the narrative way in the future and have her meet his family, or come retire to his estate. We don't actually need more fawning over Julia in my opinion and it makes me wonder who the author views Julia as. Does she represent someone in her life? Or how she sees herself? Because as much as I like Julia she's dangerously close to being a 'boy mom' and it's a little dull. I would have much preferred to see Robbie come to see Adam all grown and be so pleased he found happiness. Or maybe she has children and he visits. Idk.
Other than that it was sweet and I like how Adam and Robbie were written.

I loved this story of the very young Adam Boyce who is now the Duke of Kielder. With the death of his beloved father and the negligence of his mother, Adam is adrift. My heart went out him because he is facing losing his Nanny Robbie, who loves him like a son. I loved everything about this novella and it warmed my heart to see that Adam would always be a son and a brother in the Jonquil family. [Mama] Julia and Lucas Jonquil were amazing and were so sensitive and kind to him. There were times that I had tears in my eyes because of the loving way they helped Adam.

Things to love about this story:
Found family
Compassion
Lord and Lady Jonquil
Support for Adam
Characters from other books

I highly recommend this novella! It is one of the most charming and endearing stories I have read. It was previously published as part of the Holly and Ivy collection, but now includes a new epilogue.Young and mature readers will love this story and want to read more in the Gents series as well the Lancaster series since these characters reappear in those books.

I’m on a book heartover. It’s like a book hangover, but my heart was handed to the character so I’ve been waiting for it to be returned.

I’m going to just go ahead and say it. The Duke of Kielder is my favorite regency leading man. Yep. There are others who I absolutely adore and push him around up there, but he is the one. He is the beast to all my beauty retellings. And shows up in one of my favorite series over and over.

And this is a glimpse at his early years. I pretty much had tears in my eyes the whole time. Adam gets invited to spend time with the Jonquils after a devastating loss. He takes Nurse Robbie with him. And she’s like warm banana bread.

This little novella is really what Christmas and/or unconditional love is all about. It’s about flat out loving someone because their very existence deserves it. It’s about patience and kindness. And hope. And all the characters get a piece of it. What’s better than that?

Plenty of little future Adam moments made me smile. See if a bit of Christmas for Adam brings love without guile.

Loved this novella set in the Gents world. I had read it previously in the anthology it was published in and loved it even more this time.

The story of Adam, the young Duke of Kielder and his special visit to the home of Lord and Lady Jonquil is so beautiful. I love how they help him be a child and experience some of the magic of Christmas. I love his blossoming relationship with both Lord and Lady Jonquil. They love him for who he is and don't try to change him. But they do help him see more of the good and happiness in the world. I love his relationship with Nurse Robbie and how much she has helped him see his own value in his young life. Seeing him grow up and start to not need her or act differently is so tender. Loved her budding relationship with Howard and how that story climaxes as well. The Christmas celebrations are lovely and I enjoyed seeing the ways they celebrate together and surprise each other.

"Family is who you choose. And we have chosen you." Such a beautiful quote!!!

Love this story and this series!
