Excellent source to use for reviewing the basic concepts of high school chemistry or the first part of a college level chemistry course. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to those confused about the basic atomic structure, periodic table, atomic weights, formula weights (molar mass), nomenclature!, balancing equations, moles, gases, solids, solutions, equilibrium, acids and bases--logorithms and PH.
There were some great charts packed inside these pages! I thought they were nicely structured and grouped in a logical manner. A few charts: Table of Common Oxidation Numbers, Table of Solubility, Periodic Table broken down in easily understood sections, Sizes of Positive and Negative Ions, to name a few.
There were questions to answer after each explanation and end of chapter self-tests, too. My only gripe about this book was that the answers should not have been so close to the questions. Darn it! :-(
For anyone looking to fill in the "wholes" in chemistry in a concise, well formulated method this would be an asset to have. The way the material was grouped was the best I've seen to date.
Enjoy a chemistry book? Yes, I did. The authors present the subject in a concise, easy-to-understand manner. I took five semesters of chemistry in college a little more than a few years back. The principles are the same. I do books like these and good math books to free up clutter in my mind so I can better read other books. This one did it.
[2.5/5] A very minimalist approach to learning a subject on ones own. The questions asked based on short descriptions are followed by the answer to said questions. One of the worst things layout practices I have ever come across in study guide books. You will most likely need a textbook of some kind to read then come back to this for an overview of the material.
This is a great basic chemistry review. Brief, easy-to-understand descriptions followed immediately by questions and answers. There is a self test at the end of each chapter for review. Perfect for a quick overview to refresh for a state test or for other purposes. Loved it.
i didn't read this word for word...but i found it to be a great resource. it explains things in a way (a better way) than other books have. i recommend it to anyone who is having trouble grasping the basic concepts of chemistry :)
This is a great book for establishing the ground work for chemistry concepts. Recommended for high school or college entry science. Easy to read with lots of questions throughout.
