Really awesome setting and a very imaginative storyline! Some very creepy bits, although not enough to make me sleep with the light on. All the same, a quick easy and enjoyable read.

Congratulations to Devin Cabrera on his first book! From one horror author to another, I wish you the best of luck! I enjoyed this story. There were a fair amount of similarities to Thirteen Ghosts (2001), but I never felt that any specific idea was poached. The author may have taken some notes from that film, but he made his own unique story with them. And the ghosts were the absolute centerpiece. They were all creepy, scary, and utilized plenty. Now the locations here gave some great visuals, but none of them strayed too far from standard spooky set pieces. The pacing was on par and the finale was good, too. My main critique here was that the story focused so much of its time on the ghosts and locations that I felt our four main characters, especially Jonah, took a backseat and were not developed enough. That made it a little tough to be properly invested in them, which took away from some of the more dire situations they faced. If that was balanced out a bit more, I think it would have a marked impact on making the story feel more well rounded. Otherwise, this was an enjoyable experience and fans of hauntings and other paranormal premises will like this quite a but. I will definitely keep an eye on this author, who shows a good deal of promise, too.

Deliciously Spooky!

This was a fun read from start to finish. The story was so outrageous I just couldn't take it seriously. A mixture of Thirteen Ghosts and my favourite cartoon, Scooby Doo! Lots of gore for the hard core horror fans to salivate over while our intrepid heroes hurtle around the island at 100 mph. It really was an over the top story. Still, I really enjoyed it.

I wanted to like this book but as the story went on it kept getting more ridiculous like an episode of Scooby Doo. I really enjoyed the stories of some of the ghosts but that was about it. The author repeated words a lot and it was pretty annoying. One page was filled with “door” over and over again. “He heard noise from the other side of the door. He wondered who was at the door. He pushed himself against the door. He hoped the door wouldn’t open” I get it the character is by the door. He did the same thing with other words as well. The story seemed all over the place and some things didn’t make sense. Like why tell me the story about the family in the mansion if that’s not who was trapped in it? Did the group even eat the entire time they were there? AND WHO TAKES EXTRA SHEETS ON A TRIP? *sigh* this story wasn’t for me.

Malevolent Ghosts!

Small backstory:

Five friends (Jonah, Audrey, Chuck, Annie and Kevin) decide that they want to take a paranormal ghost tour to an island that is known to be a haunted attraction that has ghosts. The only downside is the only way to reach the island is by boat and the boat will leave then have to come back to pick them up.

The friends just want to experience the island and see if it lives up to what it is known for but something happens while they are there and the ghosts that were caged becomes free taking over the island and going after the friends. It becomes an act of survival for all of them!

Thoughts:

This was my first time reading this author and I thought the story was a grabber as once the ghosts get loose on the island it becomes a wild free for all. A lot of reviewers have compared this book to Thirteen Ghosts and Jurassic Park which is about right, however, I am comparing it more to the book "Ghostland" by author, Duncan Ralston that was published in 2019.

This is my opinion only but to me the "ghosts being behind barriers and getting loose" is not an original concept by this author. The background setting with characters is different, and the ghosts are different, but that is about all that is different. Other than that observation the book is loaded with ghost action and lots of blood. Giving this book four "Ghosts on the Loose" stars!

-too many plot holes
-gives me thirteen ghosts vibes, which i was stoked on, but this is not great.
-how are you able to see the molded rotten fruit in a bowl from people that lived in a house hundreds of years old??
-why can't these ghosts go through walls? why do they eat human flesh?
-why was there zero sense of "let's get the fuck out of here" from any of the characters as soon as fresh blood and actual bodies were seen?
-d - do
-n - not
-f - fucking read this

I have a couple thoughts on this book. I did genuinely like the idea and concept of it, I liked the idea of having an island full of dangerous ghost just hunting people down but I overall found this book kinda disorienting and confusing to read.

There’s some things that aren’t really explained fully and are just kinda said and left hanging. Like with Jonah’s parenting being dead is just brought up and doesn’t really go anywhere. Same with Annie being afraid of cemeteries and having a miscarriage, it’s just kinda said and doesn’t really go anywhere.

A lot of things also happen out of pure convenience for the characters. Like if they get stuck in a room with one of the ghosts, instead of tricking it or distracting it there happens to be a door that leads them to safety (at least for a little while).

It’s just kinda hard to care about characters that aren’t really deep. You’re really only told a few plain things about each character, so when they die it really has no effect on the story cause you barely knew them in the first place.

So overall it was good and I did enjoy it for the most part but by the end I was confused as to why they made certain decisions and how certain things worked.

I almost didn't finish this one but I had already made it over half way. The author kept on repeating himself on almost everything. Very very on the nose, kinda insulting to the reader to be honest. There's also a ton of head hopping in scenes with multiple characters. Tons of unnecessary details. Clichéd writing, purple prose, seems like he likes the sound of his own prose a lot. Desperately needs to be edited.

And then there was the totally random reference to a stillborn birth that had no relevance to the story at all.

WELCOME TO NIGHTMARE ISLAND, by Devin Cabrera, is a novel that reminds me a lot of the movie 13 Ghosts, but with a group of friends visiting a haunted island, instead.

The main problem I had with this novel was the characterization. Here we have a group who like to travel to haunted places, and yet, when they get to this "haunted island", most of them are afraid and act like they never wanted to see the place--or ANY ghostly attraction--to begin with. This really contradicted the impression I had from the beginning. Also, despite learning trivial facts about the characters sporadically, I didn't find any of them the least bit memorable, or "fully fleshed out". The things they'd "think" (as it was all rather "tell" and not much "show") were very repetitive, and often felt like it came from out of the blue. Without spoiling the exact case, one character mentions a HUGE moment in their life--that these "best friends" should all have been aware of--3/4 through the novel, in a passing THOUGHT. It had never been mentioned before, and would definitely had made an impact on me knowing this beforehand.

On the good side, the ghosts were interesting, as was the location. An isolated island that once house an insane asylum... you really can't go wrong putting ghosts in a place like that.

As always, all opinions are valid, and others have enjoyed this book more than I. If it sounds like it's up your alley, give it a try!

DNF at 60%

This book has a lot of errors which is off putting and by the time I reached the 60% mark I couldn’t bring myself to push through it. (Read through Kindle Unlimited)

At first when I saw this described as Jurassic Park meets 13 Ghosts it initially made me think of Ghostland but it doesn’t mimic that story.

Grammatical errors aside I didn’t really like the story or characters, the “island tour” element wasn’t long enough as it didn’t really seem like there were many ghosts to even call it an attraction.

At a push it gave Scooby Doo slightly meets 13 Ghosts vibe.

I know I can’t fully judge it due to not reading the full book but personally this book wasn’t for me.

Thanks, Devin, for sharing an arc with me! This book will be released on Friday, March 24. Happy early release day! This book was definitely full of some evil ghosts! These ghosts are being held on an island to keep them from harming the rest of the world. A group of young people are invited to the island under false pretenses, the ghosts all get loose, and the chases ensue. At one point it gave me some Scooby-Doo vibes during the chase scenes, but overall it was a fun read. If you like a fun, ghosty story - grab a copy when it releases and support Devin!

This book is like if a more conservative leaning frat boy had a good story idea (cause the main story isn't awful and some ideas had potential) and decided to write a novel with only having had English 101 in college and then reread it and thought "how can I make this more ridiculous?" and then does it and then doesn't edit it and then self publishes it

First off, great idea to have an entire island dedicated to housing criminal paranormal jerks such as the ghosts in this one. I do have to say my favorite was Jones Jepson, he was so deranged and malice in every way. The beginning just about jumps straight into the action of the island and keeps going. The tense feeling never let up once it started. If sadistic ghosts are your jam check this out! A great representation of ghost jailbreak. They are coming for you, how do you survive something that has literally no weakness and would love nothing more than to make you suffer?

This is going to be a short review. In a word, >GULP<. I haven’t felt so scared since Stolen Tongues! Full of creepy, really scary, scenes, ‘Welcome to Nightmare Island’ was a blast! It’s described as Thirteen Ghosts meets Jurassic Park – but they never said it’d take the very best of those movies and go on a rampage with it! I was sooo happy to read this! Thank you Devin Cabrera for the ARC!

There were a lot of repeating words and names to the point of distraction. I tried, but I couldn't care about the characters. I think Jones Jepsen was interesting and I wish he played a larger roll. It had potential and I will try another book by this author.

DNF 40% of the way in. The concept was fantastic, keeping a bunch of ghosts on an island? Yes. The follow through..not so much. The writing could definitely use some work, alot of repetitiveness.

**A solid 3.8 stars rounded up**
It's been described as Thirteen Ghosts meets Jurassic Park and it deserves that comparison completely. We follow Jonah, a horror author, and his friends as they travel by invitation across Lake Sadness to Nightmare Island. There they are to tour the place and see real ghosts on display. These aren't just any ghosts though, they're blood thirsty, murderous ghouls with a taste for human suffering. Isolated island, angry ghosts, what could possibly go wrong?!

This was fun, fast paced and had plenty of action. There's been huge hype around this book and to be honest the hype ruined it a little for me. But Cabrera does a solid job with his debut and offers up some horrifying imagery and spine chilling scenes. The end is left wide open for a sequel and I really hope there's one in the works because he can take this story in so many directions. Exciting stuff!

I discovered this book in the wonderful FB group Books of Horror. If you are a fan of horror and are on FB check them out! The group is currently running the Indie Brawl 2023. Fun! This author's debut is the 3rd book I have read that's included in this brawl (the other 2 being Stolen Tongues and Ghostland) and I think this one was the most fun. It's a clever, clever idea. In the beginning I felt like I was sitting around the campfire listening to a creepy ghost story. Then the action ramps up and there is no escape. Some of the scariest ghosts I have encountered in literature or screen. Unique entities, a ghastly island history, creepy places and encounters in the dark, a twist or two I didn't see coming and an eerie ending. Oh, and spiders! Scary fun indeed. 3.5 rounded up for originality.

Terrible in every sense except the one you want

I’m really not sure who’s giving all these positive reviews so I have chosen to leave my own as if any of the previous readers had been honest I would have saved a few precious hours of my lifetime. The premise is rushed and implausible, the characters when faced with the life altering fact that ghosts are real barely bat an eyelid. The dialogue is honestly awful, the decisions made laughable, I understand that situations are needed to move the story forward but really “lets poke the corpse and see what happens” during what’s supposed to be an escape was deplorable. There is no history no explanation and really no point to the whole story, no lessons learned, no character development, I could barely picture how they looked they were so sparsely described. They never eat anything either it’s so bizarre. Just avoid.

DNF 30% This is not for me. They don't find it odd that blood stains from a family slain "hundreds of years ago" are still present? And the bodies of former asylum workers are still there for the ghosts to cavort with? Huh?? And if this is hoping to be a tourist attraction, shouldn't there be a proper hotel? Suspension of disbelief is one thing but this is ridiculous.

I will start by saying I liked the concept of this book. It's different and has potential. I had many issues with how the story is presented though. The writing is repetitive and needs a LOT more polishing. Most of the storytelling is "in doing so, just then, finally, suddenly, in doing so, just then, and then, etc." Painful to get through. The characters are so flat they may as well be interchangeable names. They all feel and notice the same things in each situation and are usually referenced in group form. I also had a huge problem suspending disbelief. Ok, I know this is a supernatural story, but at least give me something to go on. One person is somehow able to capture and contain ghosts, but it is never explained exactly how this is possible within this world. It just needs to be accepted that "technology" and "an ancient spell" known by only one person controls everything. The details that are given tend to be inconsistent, vague, and anachronistic, so the story doesn't make sense at times.  Example: the characters tour a house that is "several hundred years old," but it contains a framed photograph of the original family it was built for (this is later on referred to as a painting, but the first instance it's a glass framed photograph). The main character also notices rotten fruit still left in a bowl from this family. Another example: the main character encounters one of the ghosts with powers (it's also never explained why some have these powers) and he was JUST told what this particular ghost can do. When it happens to him, he is super confused and has no idea what is going on. That is just lazy writing. At about the halfway point I started rooting for the ghosts to take all these people out. Speaking of the ghosts, I am also told repeatedly that these characters are seeing REAL ghosts. How the heck do they know that? Nothing about them even seems ghost-like. The ghosts are in solid human form, they apparently need to eat human flesh, and most have killed tons of people for years after death. Come on now.

How many times is Jonah going to turn around and the person he was talking to is mysteriously gone?

The group is dumber than a doorknob with absolutely ZERO survival instincts. Audrey, for example… how stupid do you have to be to just stand there while your friend searched for a weapon to kill you with? She just stands there for minutes until he finally finds the perfect one he wants and starts to come after her, then she backs into a wall. Like you could’ve ran 5+ minutes ago and been out of there.

Then dumb and dumber run into a building because they see a female in the window and “The only female on the island is Audrey! She’s telling us to come inside!” Like forget the whole ass female ghost you just saw who beckons you near… or the mama and child ghost… then they all just keep splitting up repeatedly. Why does everyone keep going separate ways or stopping to turn back and do this or that as if hounds aren’t chasing you and multiple ghosts attempting to kill you? They literally just are doing everything in their power to be killed. Back on to another of their stupidity examples: “Ghost child that you should never go near or touch unless you wish to be shredded apart by mama!” Sure, let me go and hold you. Like do y’all just all have memory loss?! Nobody seems to remember anything at all that they were warned against. If there was a warning to NOT do something, you better believe that this group of dummies are going to do it.

And I’m tired of reading, “they didn’t have to wait long.” “He wouldn’t have long to wait.” “They’d soon find out.” Or some variation of them. It is extremely repetitive and this book could have benefited from an editor, a few more drafts, revisions, arc readers, something. Overall, it wasn’t TERRIBLE and I’d give this author another chance, but this book didn’t do it for me. 2/5

Well this was a wild ride! Thirteen Ghosts meets Jurassic Park with a little sprinkle of Scooby Doo in the middle!

Jonah & his friend love going on haunted/Horror adventures so when an invite to a private island arrives, they jump at the chance. Its a ghost tour with some of the worst ghosts in the world. Said ghosts are trapped and viewed like animals in a zoo but of course that doesn't last. Highly recommend! Thank you Devin for the Arc Copy

Spoilers****

I think this book had potential. The idea was really great. It needed heavy, heavy editing. Had the right editor gotten hold of this book, I think it could have been dynamite. There were a lot of grammar issues, repetition, etc. that could have easily been fixed.

I also think delving deeper into the backstory of the ghosts could have added to the horror. It felt like the author started that but then got lazy and stopped trying. Not a super scary read for me.

Orb thing was real weird. I would have liked it better had the ghosts been held by a spell or something only. The orb into a briefcase and that whole thing was just way bizarre. Again, right editor, some better details, this could have been great.

I know this book gets a lot of attention on BoH group but I’m disappointed.

Story was good but couldn’t get past the writing. Grammar was fine (except for Miles - the author used Mile’s to show possession- isn’t it Miles’ or Miles’s???). Author could’ve used a better editor. I didn’t care about the characters, there seemed to be weird ghost physics- Apparently ghost dogs/ghosts can’t get past closed doors so if you’re ever chased, close the door and you’ll be fine.

I'm going to be honest, I didn't finish this book. I got just over halfway through. I just could not keep going though. Between a jarring scene change with no flow, reuse of the same word in sentences, just completely unbelievable things people don't do (bring extra sheets on vacation that just so happen to fit the bed?) It was unbearable to read.
