When Gideon returns home in search of closure to his past, he finds the once vibrant town is now impoverished and oppressed by a group who has taken advantage of their misfortune. But while he may be willing to do small things to help during his brief stay, he’s not the celebrated war hero everyone believes he is.
Will an encounter with a stranger be enough to force Gideon to face the shadows of his past? Or will he abandon those he’s come to care about the most and wash his hands of a town about to be destroyed by its sins.
**Author’s Although this novel is inspired by the story of Gideon from the Bible, it is written as a contemporary Christian romantic suspense and is not intended to be an exact retelling.
Another winner! Gideon has been estranged from his family but felt God has led him back home to check on his alcoholic father who's had a stroke. When he arrives, he notices his hometown is not what it used to be when he left. The church is closed, there are 4 totem poles in the town marketplace, and it seemed as though the town was going through some desperate times. Mayor Fairfax seems to have taken over the town by evil and underhanded means. Although Gideon didn't come back home to fix anything, he stays longer than he'd planned; and God uses him to gather the town together and fight the Mayor's evil and controlling ways. But he can't do it alone. I loved "Gideon" even more than "Samson" and am looking forward to the next book in this series. Ms. Coleing writes with great character development and creativity, and I really enjoyed how modern-day Gideon followed the main points of Gideon from the Bible, like how the group who were to fight the Mayor were limited by how they drank their water, and modern-day Gideon's "fleece" was so original!! There's very creative storytelling, sticking to the original facts with a modern flair! I also liked Eric--the angel?--and his effect on Gideon and others! Can the stronghold over this town be broken? Can the townspeople who are desperately looking to believe in something turn back to God? Will Nikki and Gideon confess their feelings for each other? Can Gideon and his father mend family ties? I thoroughly enjoyed Gideon and found it difficult to put the book down. It was a uniquely written story. I received a complimentary ARC of this book and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.
Thank you to the author and publisher for this ARC publication for an honest review.
Shawna Coleing has done a wonderful start on this series (this is book 2) with a contemporary take on bible stories. This tale is Gideon's who is an injured soldier following God's voice leading him home to face a past that has broken him. This is a story of good VS evil, redemption, and forgiveness. There are some dark topics but nothing graphic. While this is marketed as "Christian Romantic Suspense" the romance doesn't happen until the end of the book. There is some relationship building/friendship with thoughts of something more, but the true romance is an afterthought. Still a good book but be aware if you are expecting a lot of romance.
Gideon is a regular guy God uses to save a town from the bully mayor. I felt like I was there getting to know Gideon and Nikki as they grew to understand their own strengths and the power of God to use them in His miracles. This story reminds me of current times and the need to find our way in a complicated world...with HOPE in our future with our Loving God!
What a great modern day Gideon story!!! It was amazing how you wove the events in the Bible into this modern day story. It was a story that I didn’t want to put down and stayed up late to keep reading. You kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next. I really enjoy your books! I will be waiting for the next one! Thank you for writing such good books.
This is one of the best stories inspired by judges book 2. This author put it all out there and I gained a better understanding of God’s word. And I love that she added some romance I could feel these two falling for each other. And with GOD in the center it worked out as it should have.
I enjoyed reading the story of Gideon in a new way. Shawna has a way of putting a story together that draws you in and the characters a real and down to earth. Can't wait for her next book to come out!
Awonďerful story so amazing how the people encouraged each other instead of instigating and releasing their fear while standing strong in spite of many doubts and difficulties.
