DI Kelly Porter knows his death was no accident. The body of a man is found at the bottom of a quarry. His appearance, and physical evidence, rule out the chance he travelled there he was put there.
DI Kelly Porter is tasked to investigate and soon digs up a bitter history between the two brothers who own the Cumbrian farmland that the quarry sits on. Arthur and Samuel inherited half each and have been locked in a feud that’s dragged on for decades. Their reluctance to cooperate makes getting answers even harder.
Privately, Kelly has other concerns about the family. Her elderly friend recently moved to a care home on the old farm that is managed by Arthur’s inscrutable wife. Kelly senses there is more than meets the eye with this case, but will searching for the truth put others at risk?
The thrilling next instalment in the DI Kelly Porter series. A must-read from million copy bestseller Rachel Lynch, for fans of Patricia Gibney, Angela Marsons and J.R. Ellis.
Rachel Lynch grew up in Cumbria and the lakes and fells are never far away from her. London pulled her away to teach History and marry an Army Officer, whom she followed around the globe for thirteen years.
A change of career after children led to personal training and sports therapy, but writing was always the overwhelming force driving the future. The human capacity for compassion as well as its descent into the brutal and murky world of crime are fundamental to her work.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this amazing book
this series just gets better and better but its also a poignant one for kelly in more ways than one
when a body is found at the bottom of a quarry kelly porter and her team are called out... what they dont realise is the can of worms that is about to opened by the finding of this body and what comes with it....
what at first looked like a suicide turns out to be murder and its down to kelly and her team to find out what happened and as the lies grow kellys concern for her friend mary who has just moved into care home which just happens to be run by one of the people that is being questioned about the murder
what a read this one was....you never know what you are going to get when you open a book by this author and she doesnt pull any punches for her poor characters....
looking forward to the next book in this series...
This is a brilliant crime thriller. Kelly is called when a man’s body is found at the bottom of a quarry. At first it seems like a suicude, but after further investigation, it’s clear he was murdered. The land that the quarry is on has been split between two brothers and when Kelly starts to asks questions about the murder, she gets the feeling the families are hiding something. With Mary moving into a care home, Kelly is pleased she’s happy but the woman who runs it is married to one of the brothers from the land nearby and she knows she needs to keep an eye on her. There’s a few different strands to this story and I loved the way it all came together. This is a great read and one that I’d highly recommend. Thanks to Canelo and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
A good story full of twists and red herrings. This author writes a gory crime story which I do enjoy. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
DI Kelly and her team are still trying to get over the death of one of their own, Rob where they are called onto another investigation. There has been a body being found in a bottom of a quarry, at first thoughts that the Person has taken their own life as they discover a suicide note in them. but Kelly senses that something isn’t right. With the help of her team and a new addition Fin, they investigate, and they find out that the body is no other that Victor who is a local undertaker. What happened to him and why? Kelly has her own problems when she comes home to find Johnnie’s ex -wife drinking wine at her home. Their relationship has had troubles before. What has Johnnie got himself involved in this time? Shared remains is another fabulous edition to the DI Kelly Porter series. It is book 12 in the series. This is another gripping page turner in the backdrop of Cumbria. Dealing with death, fraud, and assisted suicide. Like the other books in this series, I couldn’t put this down. I read in one day. I can’t wait for more. 5 stars
Honestly, I think we see more shed into Porter’s private life as she tried to navigate her professional work and the issues she faces at home, it’s a classic book. I have nothing bad to say, bog standard where this time a man’s body is discovered at the bottom of a quarry. As Porter begins to investigate, a whole can of worms are opened up, and begins to get complicated. Staged as a suicide with a suicide note, and brothers who are estranged - porter has to navigate carefully to seek the truth.
An excellent read building on the events from the last book, it’s a classic read - truly a comfy comfort read for me as I get back to the groove of things.
Gripping does not come close! A genuine didn't want to put it down read and another fantastic addition to this brilliant series. Again the author tackles an important and topical crime, (no spoilers here), and as always she knocks it out of the park. The main plot opens with a body being pushed into a quarry. The subplot opens with tension at home and sadness at work, following the death of Kelly’s colleague Rob. Both plots give hours of enjoyable reading. Out of one will come justice and the other, we hope, happiness, but with Kelly nothing is easy and I can't wait to accompany her again to see what life throws at her next. While this works perfectly well as a standalone I urge you to read the series in order, and I envy you the binge read.
Shared Remains by Rachel Lynch is book 12 in the DI Kelly Porter series. Thank you to Canelo Publishers, Netgalley and Rachel Lynch for the advance copy. The team is still suffering from the trauma of their last big case when a body is discovered in a quarry on Morningside land. Did he fall or was he pushed? Morningside is split between 2 brothers and there is a nursing home on one of the properties which has an involvement in the story. Ds Fin Maguire joins the team and he may have a hard time settling in. I really like Rachel’s writing and have followed the books from the beginning. I love her descriptions and love the way the emotions of the characters come through. There is grief, betrayal of trust, sibling rivalry so certainly a mixed bag. The secrets people have and the lengths they go to for money also play a part. I am certainly looking forward to the next book.
Woah, the book was mind blowing, engaging and unputdownable. Before getting to the plot, let me tell you I loved the characters and setting. The characters are mysterious and they are multifaceted. There are so many layers in the story. I loved the detailed investigation, characters backstories and the detailed procedure of examining the dead body. It all felt so real like a visual film.
A man is found dead at the bottom of a quarry. Everyone is oblivion to his identity while the note is trying to convince that he committed suicide but the mystery is deep. The mystery is connected with two brothers, their farm and the business,DI Kelly Porter is trying to find the missing link between his death and the mystery surrounding it. Kelly believes that his death was no accident or suicide but it was a well planned murder. To get to the bottom of his mystery, she continue the investigation and try to find clues leading to the murder. The mystery gets deeper and secrets begin to bobble up on surface. There were also some characters with secret identity. The plot is just so mind boggling, the author has created infinite layers. The setting has both mysterious and atmospheric vibe. The book blew me away. I wasn’t expecting those revelations at the end. The book will keep you guessing till the end. This is a multilayered story with multifaceted characters.

Her elderly friend recently moved to a care home on the old farm that is managed by Arthur’s inscrutable wife. The twelfth outing for Kelly & her team & another edge of the seat thriller. Whilst it could be read on its own I’d recommend either reading in order or at least reading the previous book as it gives an insight into how the team are feeling & coping in this book. The setting is very well described, the story is fast paced & the characters have depth. I always love how the author blends the professional & personal lives of the main characters – it makes them more relatable to me. There are twists & turns before things are resolved My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Another strong instalment in this series. I feel like I know Kelly as a character very well now so it is always nice catching up with her. I don't feel like we know the new detective yet other than that he is good looking and Irish, but I'm sure that will come in future books. I did like the addition of Mary, and her storyline was very emotional to read.
The case was interesting, but I felt that it took a bit of a backseat to Kelly's personal issues and the team dynamics this time around, and there was never much question about who was responsible, it was more of a 'why' and 'how' than a 'who'.
Overall, I would recommend this book and all the others in the series. I wouldn't say this is appropriate to be read as a standalone due to the focus on Kelly and the team.
Shared Remains book 12 in the DI Kelly Porter series by Rachel Lynch is another excellent 5 star read ( as were all the previous 11 in the series. I wholeheartedly recommend this series for anyone who loves crime/police procedural books definitely my favourite genre. Whilst Kelly Porter is the main character there are others too like Kate, Johnny, Ted and now the newly introduced Fin. I like how the author intertwines their domestic lives into the stories. This book features a discredited funeral director (currently topical) a nursing home and a feuding family which all go together to make an excellent read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early copy.
have read every novel in the DI Kelly Porter series and have loved every single one. When a man is found dead at the bottom of quarry, Kelly is brought on the case to determine the case of death. Was it suicide or something more sinister? As she looks into the history of the land the man was found on, she soon learns that two brothers own each half. Arthur and Samuel have been feuding for years following. the death of their father. As Kelly digs deeper, she begins to unearth many dark secrets that have been buried through the years. There are so many twists and turns in this story. I really love the way this author writes. I am looking forward to book 13!
Book 12 in the DI Kelly Porter series. A great addition to the series ! A gripping storyline with lots of twists and turns / looking forward to the next one !
Thank you to NetGalley and Canelo for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review
This is book 12 of the DI Kelly Porter series and it continues as strong as ever and feels like it still has plenty more to give. It doesn’t take long for the new guy Fin to be accepted fully into the team and I rather liked him too. Kelly’s home life features significantly and I feel it would be helpful to have read the previous books to fully understand the relationships. A complex case for the team to solve and plenty to keep you turning pages. Highly recommended
This is another one of my all time favourite authors. It seems ages since I caught up with Kelly and her team, and this case didn’t disappoint.
There are some really grim going’s on in Cumbria and when a local man is found dead at the bottom of a quarry, Kelly has to investigate whether it was murder or suicide. Unfortunately the deceased is estranged from his family who, as a result of a bitter feud haven’t got on for years. On his brothers half of the farmland stands a care home, where an old friend of Kelly’s has moved into. All seems great to start with, then suspicions grow as to whether all is how it seems.
There is also Kelly’s home life that has taken a turn for the worst.
This is another cracking tale, which I was sorry to finish, but I’m looking forward to the next one as soon as possible. i even recommended Rachel's Kelly Porter to ITV as a replacement for Vera! They asked for a female northern policewoman and i thought Kelly would be ideal.
My thanks to netgalley, Rachel and the publishers for the ARC.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
“Shared Remains” by Rachel Lynch is a compelling addition to the Detective Kelly Porter series, marking its twelfth installment. Lynch’s mastery in weaving a complex tapestry of crime and human emotion is on full display in this gripping narrative.
Set against the rugged backdrop of Cumbria, the story plunges readers into a chilling investigation following the discovery of a man’s body at the bottom of a quarry. The evidence suggests foul play, and DI Kelly Porter is thrust into the heart of a bitter feud between two brothers, Arthur and Samuel, whose animosity has festered over decades of shared inheritance.
Lynch excels in portraying the intricate dynamics of family conflict and the lengths to which individuals will go to protect their legacy. The plot thickens as Kelly’s personal life intertwines with the case, bringing an added layer of tension and urgency to her quest for the truth.
The narrative is a testament to Lynch’s ability to balance the procedural aspects of crime-solving with deep character development. Readers will find themselves immersed in the psychological depth of the characters, each rendered with a realism that speaks to Lynch’s keen understanding of human nature.
“Shared Remains” is a study of the human condition, a mirror reflecting our darkest impulses and the redemptive power of seeking justice. Fans of the genre will appreciate the novel’s relentless pace, clever twists, and the haunting beauty of its setting.
Rachel Lynch’s “Shared Remains” cements her status as a stalwart of detective fiction. It’s a must-read for aficionados of the genre and a worthy continuation of DI Kelly Porter’s journey.
“Shared Remains” is the twelfth novel in the DI Kelly Porter series by author Rachel Lynch.
I have followed this series from the very start and one of the main reasons I enjoy it is the strong characters that have developed over the course of the series. Added to that the books are well written, skilfully plotted and entertaining reads.
A man’s body is discovered at the bottom of a quarry and DI Kelly Porter is immediately suspicious that it is not an accident. As Kelly begins her investigation, she unearths a bitter, decades-long feud between the quarry’s owners, brothers Arthur and Samuel who are reluctant to cooperate with the enquiries.
First impressions were that the man had taken his own life due to the presence of a suicide note but Kelly’s suspicions that something is not right prove correct and investigations determine the the body is that of the local undertaker, Victor.
There are the usual family back stories which I enjoy that add the extra layer to the novel.
This was an excellent addition to the series and was a thoroughly enjoyable read with a gripping plot and well-drawn characters. I would recommend this series but would definitely encourage readers to start from the first book to get the full enjoyment.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Canelo for supplying a copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review.
Ok, I already adore this series, so I went in knowing I was going to enjoy this. I wasn’t disappointed. This is the 12th book in the series and I have enjoyed each and every one! As always, the plot was twisty and turny and it was difficult to work out how it was going to end. I did manage to piece together some of it but some of it did still surprise me. I read this in the space of 48 hours though, it was captivating and I was desperate to work out how it was going to unfold. I love how we found out more about DI Kelly Porter and her personal life as well as her professional life. This really is one of my favourite crime thriller series.
Blurb DI Kelly Porter knows his death was no accident. The body of a man is found at the bottom of a quarry. His appearance, and physical evidence, rule out the chance he travelled there unaided: he was put there.
DI Kelly Porter is tasked to investigate and soon digs up a bitter history between the two brothers who own the Cumbrian farmland that the quarry sits on. Thanks to Rachel and NetGalley for allowing me to read Shared Remains before the publication date. The book started as a slow burn, creating a sombre atmosphere as the backdrop to the story, before moving into top gear and becoming a page turner with a roller coaster of emotions.
The devious plot is set against the beautiful autumn colours of the Cumbrian landscape.
For DI Kelly Porter, there seems to be no escape from her professional and personal problems. With her team still recovering from the death of a colleague, the arrival of a new DS will be sensitive, a situation which Kelly is doing her best to avoid by staying out of the office.
On a personal level, Kelly’s relationship with Johnny is in trouble and her home is no longer a shelter from the pressure of work. After a long arduous day, Kelly is shocked to return home, only to find Johnny entertaining his ex – wife. And that is only the first of many surprises.
Without giving away any spoilers, the very topical and contentious subject in the book gave me pause for thought. There are plenty of twists, turns and red herrings before all is revealed.
Thank you to Canelo and NetGalley for the eARC of this, the twelvth book in the DI Kelly Porter series
Kelly and her team are called out to a quarry where the body of a local undertaker has been found. Initially it appears he committed suicide but something doesn't sit right for Kelly. Her instincts are proved correct, he had been pushed from the top. The investigation into his business leads Kelly to a private old age home owned by the sister-in-law of the quarry owner. Worryingly an elderly friend of Kelly's has just become a resident. Soon another body is found. Greed, old feuds, infidelity all play a role in the deaths. In addition to solving the murder, Kelly also has to make some decisions in her home life.
This is an excellent book but I wouldn't consider it a stand alone read. Portions of the book deal with the team recovering from the death of a colleague in a previous book, a new team member joining, and Kelly's home life crisis. The whole series is very well done and I would recommend reading some of the previous books in order to get a feel for the characters. 4 out of 5 stars.
When the body of a respected undertaker is found at the bottom of a quarry & has a suicide note on him it seems a straight forward case, but Kelly Perter isn't so sure & her doubts are soon to be confirmed- he didn't get where he was found without intervention. He was found on the land that once belonged to one man, but who split it between his two sons- a very unfair division that led to very bad blood between them.
Kelly & her team are still struggling to come to terms with the loss of Rob, who recently died on a previous case, but new boy Fin seems to be fitting in well. Investigating further it seemed one of the brothers owns a retirement home run by his wife (what a totally dislikeable character!) Kelly's friend Mary has recently moved in there & when Kelly's investigations find out more, she worries about her friends safety. Kelly also has problems at home- what has her partner Johnny been up to?
I have loved this series of books from the start & each one keeps me gripped to the page. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book- can't wait for the next one!
I was absolutely thrilled to be approved to read this latest addition to the wonderful Kelly Porter series and for me it was the best so far but I have to say every book in the series has been just perfect. Set in the beautiful Lake District in Cumbria which is very near to where I live this is superb police procedural with a plot line that kept me glued to my Kindle as I tried to figure out just who was the guilty person and also for what reason. I loved being back with Kelly and her team and really enjoyed catching up with the backstories I think that’s what makes all the books in the series so good the ongoing lives of the team are just as interesting as the plot and this book in particular excelled itself on that score. Wonderful writing, fabulously clever storytelling and superb characters what more could you ask for……. Well the next book quickly please Rachel Lynch and many, many thanks to you for a 5 star read. My thanks also to NetGalley and Canelo for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This latest installment to the DI Kelly Porter series sees Kelly and the team called to investigate the strange death of a local funeral director who was found at the bottom of a quarry after being missing for days beforehand. When the initial presumption of suicide is found to not be as clear cut as it seemed, things take an ever darker turn. The body was found on the land of one of two brothers with a rift that has been going on since the death of their parents. But what is the connection? As Kelly delves deeper, she finds there could be ramifications to not only the brothers, but to people closest to her.
I always really enjoy a DI Kelly Porter, I've been a huge fan of Rachel's since the first book, and I look forward to seeing the developments not only in the cases but in Kelly's personal life. Rachel tells the stories so well, and the plots are always so interesting with a mix of drama, twists and turns! This book is no different! loved it! it's such a great series, and set in a beautiful location, The Lake District. This particular story involving two brothers at war with each other was very well written, and full of some surprises along the way! The mystery of the way the body was found had me hooked from the beginning, but I had no idea where the story was going to go, or who if anyone was responsible! loved it!
Thank you so much for the ARC in exchange for my review.
When a local undertaker is found dead at the bottom of quarry in an apparent suicide, DI Kelly Porter is tasked with trying to figure out how he ended up there. As the investigation gathers a pace, two estranged brothers, one with a farm and the other with a nursing home appear to be in the centre of the mystery.
The plot is convoluted and extremely well thought out dealing with issues that are relevant and very much a discussion point.
The background to Kelly and her personal relationships added another dimension as she struggled to cope with her partner being less than honest and the grief of loosing a colleague. The setting in the Lake District added to the atmosphere.
This is the first Kelly Porter book I have read, and it does work as a standalone. However, I feel that reading the previous instalments would just help in understanding the personal side of the main characters.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher Canelo for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is the twelfth book in the Kelly Porter series and I love them all!
The body of a local undertaker is found at the bottom of a slate quarry, deep in the heart of the Lake District. At first sight it looks like a suicide, but following the post mortem, it appears that Kelly has yet another murder to investigate. Arthur and Samuel Morningside are two brothers who have refrained from speaking to each other over a number of years following the death of their father Percival. Arthur is married to Beryl who runs and owns a nursing home on the land left to Arthur in his fathers will and Samuel and his wife Gloria own the family farm and the slate quarry. This book is full of mystery and surprise and as Kelly's team welcome the new member Fin (following the tragic death of the much loved and respected Rob) things move on at a steady and efficient pace. Kelly's personal life with partner Johnny continues to decline, but is their a love rival on the horizon? I can't wait to find out in the next book!
