Time is pushing all matter across the universe like a tireless speed train, and the only thing that can tell the endless passing story is a tiny particle of light.
Tavon Green and his three friends have made a lot of trips together over the years, but this summer will be the road trip that changes their lives forever. One of them received an ominous letter from an estranged relative with a deed to a plot of desert land and promises of treasures beyond their imagination. After finding the location, they haphazardly discover that on the other side of a mysterious door underground, they will become lost across time and space.
Follow the four friends on their wild time traveling adventure across galaxies, voids, planets, and asteroids as they encounter strange and terrifying variances of life and use the best of their wits to try and figure out how to get home.
Think of The Sandlot meets Lost In Space. I don’t to get to read sci-fi that often. So, I was excited to read 4444! by David Blankenship. The story follows a group of close knit friends that stumbles upon an unexpected gift, or curse, from one of the groups relatives. The group of friends don’t hesitate to push the limits of their knowledge while outside forces tests the limits of their friendship. David’s writing is succinct and really gets into the weeds on the science aspects of the story. The adventure is full of twist and turns and the author does an excellent job of getting you to care about the characters. I definitely recommend to any fans of sci-fi and anyone looking for a quick and entertaining read.
This story had my attention from the beginning. It starts off with four friends who go on a trip after one of their grandpa’s deeds them a piece of land and a letter that boasts of treasures beyond his imagination. The letter gives directions to go to an out-of-place mound with an up-turned tree on the property. A key was also included with the letter.
The friends find the buried hidden door, and after entering it, their adventure begins! They quickly discover they had found a time travel machine in the form of a house, all buried underground. After figuring out how to work it, they’re sent to faraway places and encounter both awe-inspiring and terrifying experiences along the way.
Things start off good as they step onto the first planet to see giant creatures in the distance. As the story progresses, they go to different places with various beings. Some are friendly and end up helping them, others hunt them down.
I enjoyed a lot about this story, but one of my favorite things was the joking banter between the four friends. They would call each other names that made me chuckle, and I could sense the camaraderie between them.
The pacing was nice in the story, and I was excited to keep reading. There were references to movies like The Wizard of Oz and Flight of the Navigator, which I enjoyed. Along with that was a shout out to the song “Intergalactic” by the Beastie Boys, which is one of my favorites.
The author also used great descriptions. One I appreciated was, “He knelt and lifted the limp right hand with fingers dangling like steamed asparagus.”
This book is a five-star read for me and I highly recommend it!
This was a wacky and entertaining sci-fi adventure filled with heart. Definitely felt some Hitchhiker's Guide vibes. Thank you to David for providing me with an ARC. If you enjoy space & time travel, definitely check out this book. It publishes May 17, 2024!
