Fangs on Ice #1

Puck & Plume: A Fangs on Ice Novella

Rate this book
NATE

I could've done without falling asleep in the middle of a Bavarian forest and being startled awake by a massive dude with a mohawk and a beak. Seriously, why did he wait for me to wake up and free him from the stupid trap my teammates told me to set up? They said I'd catch a mythical creature that would take me to its treasure.

He introduces himself as Vee and says, now that I’ve caught him, he’s my mate. What the heck? I don't want a mate with a beak, no matter how awesome his butt is or how much I want to use his cushy pecs as pillows. When he brings me into the heart of the woods, I'm afraid he'll hurt me, but thank goodness for Vee, who takes care of me. Now I just need to make it through the night without getting frisky with the chicken dude who rescued me.

VITUS

I can't believe I got stuck in that dumb trap, especially when it's just a flimsy net on a dying branch. The guy snoozing against the oak across the way put it up. I didn't even need to see the Greek letters on his old shirt. He was the embodiment of an American frat boy. Tourists... They always underestimate the power of Bavarian beer.

I'm tempted to let him sleep. There's another part of me that's trying really hard to ignore how hot he is. I don't even like being around people and trying my best to avoid them. Taking Frat Boy home with me sucks, but I don't really have a choice. He's too drunk to get very far without freezing, and I can’t go against the oath I took as a Forest Ranger.

PUCK AND PLUME is book 1 in FANGS ON ICE. It has a guaranteed HEA, and can be read as a standalone.

If you like your chicken spicy then this could be the book for you. That is if you are amused my half-chicken/half-man love stories. It’s set in the Bavarian forest where love has no boundaries. It’s as raunchy as it gets.

Disclaimer: I was only searching for books on trolls and by chance found this.

"He who traps an Elvertritsch is lucky, for he catches himself a mate for life"

Hockey frat bro and a big sexy chicken. What a fun combo!
This was fluff n spice with a dash of angst. I loved their chemistry. The way they were both SO attracted to each other.. Nate telling Vee multiple times how beautiful his feathers were 🥺 ooey gooey feel good. I had fun.
Off to the next one.

Seeing my c*m leak from his gaping hole was a sacred experience.

Sexy chicken man x himbo hockey bro? YES PLEASE! Puck and Plume combines German folklore with modern sports romance! This gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me!

Nate and Vitus were really fun to read about! Even though Vee is a little annoyed with Nate about the trap, he knows they’re supposed to be mates. Nate is obviously confused, but feels the pull (specifically to his ass and pecks 😂). While this novella was short, we got some great backstory on both MC’s. Nate is struggling to fit in with the team as he’s American. While Vee is a bit of a loner and has a tragic history with hockey. There’s also a sprinkle of angst, but this was mostly sweet and spicy! I liked the humor and banter between the MC’s and I hope to see more of them in later books! This is the first book I’ve read by Rhea and I loved it! I’m already looking forward to the next installment!

While I enjoyed the unique monster MC in this book, I felt like I couldn’t connect as much as I wanted to to the MCs. Vee was a cinnaroll with a somewhat stern demeanor and Nate was a slightly chaotic golden retriever. They were cute together and all. I just wanted a bit more backstory and plot.

Honestly I don’t think the author gave this a read through.

The grammar is sloppy, and the word choices are really poorly planned. I don’t even need to get started on the plot and characters because that wasn’t the worst part.

I think this could have been better if there was just more editing and reflection on sentences and sentence structure. The diction is there one moment and immediately gone the next.

I don’t want to read something like this ever again.

This had me at "Stern German Chicken Daddy".

He who traps an Elvertritsch is lucky, for he catches himself a mate for life" (p. 18)

If I could go back in time would I buy this again? I'd probably wait until available within Kindle Unlimited and then read it (Other Rhea Fox books are on KU, so I guess this would eventually come there too?).

Tags from author: insta lust, dub con [I guess making out while one is sober and one is drunk? Consent is dubious solely due to having imbibed not because someone is taken advantage of], fatal hockey accident [there is even a warning again in the chapter - it is not described very graphically but definitely appreciate the heads up]

Highlights
- Cover matches content perfectly (art by @burningstar_art on Instagram)
- trying to explain how to pronounce German words
- Sources & Information section (Loved this, it gives info on setting, (including a map with copyright information <3), the city, the cryptid, the hockey team)
- the humour
- pec and asspreciation
- the occasional "oh yeah the author is clearly German" moment

What could have made this better?
- Fewer POV switches! There were so many I got whiplash. 23 Chapters in ~130 pages makes for a POV switch every five and a half pages. Due to this, it was hard to follow along and it would have greatly benefitted from not stopping to give me both MCs internal thoughts and rather have fewer POV switches and more dialogue instead.
- I reiterate: more dialogue, less internal thought stuff
- slightly different pacing: they have less than a day together, are then separated for six weeks and then the mate pull is too strong and they fuck and decide to be together forever...Why?
- showing the mate bond - we learn that Mr. Chicken feels everything his frat hockey bro was feeling and there is a moment of them sharing negative emotions: why no positive ones? Emotional sex feedback loops are awesome
- if the stern German chicken daddy had actually been stern and a Daddy :') and not just a German chicken

Quotes

“Ridges?” On their hard Ds? “Yes, you know, money, gold.” “Oh, riches, yeah.” “Yeah, very ridge. They’re hard to catch, but when you get one, they give you their ridges.” p. 6

Does the Grim Reaper look like that to everyone? A hot giant chicken guy with an ass I wanted to bury my face in? p. 23

...drooling over this guy’s chest, and not in a ‘Hey bro, give me your workout plan’ way. I wanted to rest my head on his pecs. I bet they made for an extremely comfy pillow. p. 24

NSFW infos:
- White American Hockey Frat Bro (has previously not had anal, bottoms)
- Bavarian Elvertritsch Chicken-Shifter-Cryptid (plumage, Mohawk, penis like an ostrich) (tops)
- overflowing cum, pushing it back in with fingers

Puck and Plume by Rhea Fox is the first in the Fangs on Ice Series (eeee!). It is a M/M Novella with a HEA, insta -lust, hockey references (with definitions at the start) and a pretty tear-jerking moment (read the triggers) .

Nate is the American hockey “dude” that is playing on a German hockey team: Veitsreuth Pumas. Nate hasn’t really been able to connect with his teammates or the locals; with rudimentary knowledge of their language, he struggles. Which as someone who can’t speak another language no matter the time and effort I put in. That hurt. As the story goes on and Nate is sent on a “quest” into the woods he finds a creature that will change his fate.

Vee is a big green chicken and ranger (that I am in love with) . During one of his nightly patrols of the forest he finds a man that is close to perishing in the cold temperatures. When he helps to nurse him back to health his protective instincts go into overdrive. Vee’s background story is something that needs to be read. I will not be spoiling it, but I did need some tissues. As a Canadian I loved that “eh?” had made its way into the book ( I know I really do say that).

The spicy fried chicken moments in the book for finger lickin good. The couple do live up to the insta-lust trope and I was here for it. Vee’s package was something to behold as it reminds me of monster/alien style which is interesting.

Overall, this book is an amazing Novella that I was able to sit down and fully enjoy.

Extra Note: The landscape of the Cabin has been living rent-free in my head. I have pictured the forest and it just screams beauty, darkness, and foreshadowing.

Two very generous stars. What did I just read? It was free and it was short, so there’s that. It was also strange and didn’t really make a lot of sense. I finished it, so it obviously kept my attention. I just never felt invested in either Nate or Vee. This is not the author for me, but others seem to love her work so I’m happy for that.

Ahhhh this was so sweet! I came away from this book feeling all fuzzy inside. I felt connect to the characters from the start. I could’ve read another 100 pages of these two. They had great chemistry. The setting was adorable. I am such a sucker for cabin/nature vibes. Some seriously hot spice throughout too. Lots of cooing and whimpering which I’m here for 😉 The book touched on one particular upsetting topic and I felt it was done well and choked me up. Overall, a short, wholesome and heartfelt read 💕

Puck & Plume is the first book in Rhea Fox's Fangs on Ice series. It's a MM romance novella featuring a well-meaning frat boy out of his depths in the Bavarian forest and a Elvertritsch that prefers the company of the quiet forest over that of people. It's told from a first person dual point of view and has a guaranteed happily ever after. You can expect accidental fated mates, insta-lust, and a story inspired by German lore with all the cozy vibes.

Please review the following content and trigger warnings and always take care of yourself while reading. Note that this list of warnings may be incomplete: insta-lust; dubious consent; description of a fatal hockey accident and ensuing trauma of a witness.
“He who traps an Elvertritsch is lucky, for he catches himself a mate for life,” I quoted a piece of lore I personally had never taken seriously.

I'm so glad I finally sat down to read something by Rhea Fox! I've been following her for so long on Bookstagram, and when I saw this release, I knew it was right up my alley. I had a lot of fun reading this one! I really appreciated the glossary and pronunciation guide at the beginning.

This was a relatively easy, sweet, and steamy read. I never thought I'd be reading a romance that featured hockey, a beautiful Bavarian forest, and a chicken man but here we are and I literally can't wait to read the rest of the series. This book is just cozy and adorable. I feel like you can't help but love Nate and Vee. I really want to go to Vee's cottage in the woods because it just sounds like the best spot to read. It was very clear that Rhea put a lot of care into writing this book in regards to the lore around the story, and it was so unique to read. Also, as a Canadian I was laughing out loud when Nate wondered why the "thing" sounded like a Canadian lumberjack. Priceless!

If you're openminded to something a little different, and looking for a cozy, quicker read (this is technically a novella), give this one a shot! They're so damn cute, and if you're a fan of monster romances and hockey this is a great intersection of the two.
“It’s you. You are the treasure, Nate. Hopefully, I can be the same for you. Our mate bond is the treasure of my people. It connects us in a way that’s deeper than anything I’ve ever known or felt.”

✨✨✨ Puck and Plume by Rhea Fox (@rheafoxauthor) is book 1 in her Fangs on Ice series. It has a guaranteed HEA, and can be read as a standalone.

Dedication:
For K. who inspired this cock tale. I hope you like it!

Tropes:
🏒 Hockey
🏒 MM
🏒 Insta lust
🏒 Dub con
🏒 Giant German Chicken Man
🏒 American ex frat boy hockey player
🏒 Accidental mates
🏒 German lore inspired
🏒 Takes place in the Bavarian Forest

Rhea Fox tells us the story of Nate and Vitus, which is a mix of Bavarian mythology and modern-day romance. When Nate drunkenly decides to follow the suggestion of one of his german team mates to built a trap to catch an Elvertritsch in the Bavarian Forest, he never imagined it would lead to an accidental mate bond. Vitus can’t believe he is trapped in such a flimsy device and has to wait until this passed-out frat boy wakes up.

Finally, after Nate releases Vee from the trap, Vee takes Nate to his warm home to prevent him from freezing to death. They both feel a strange sensation deep inside and try to resist it, but it’s a losing battle, and they eventually give in to it.

The story is full of banter and humor as well as steamy romance and folklore. If you are a fan of PNR, you found your next read.

Quotes:
If it’s wrong, why does it feel so damn good?

Can a taste be beautiful? If it can, that’s what it is. Beautiful.

A cooing whimper resounded in the tight quarters of his shower, sliding down my spine and going straight into my hard-on. It twitched against my thigh.

“Scorching hot,” he whispered, gripping my ass cheek tight. “Consumed by fire, a beacon in the dark of my days, igniting me right alongside you so we can burn together.”

We practically pounced on each other the moment we stepped into my furnished apartment. Vee went nuts, tearing my clothes and desperately cooing to avoid destroying my stuff with his claws. “Just rip them. I don’t give a damn. I need us naked,” I groaned.

As soon as i saw the cover of this i knew i had to read it.
A giant German chicken man that gets caught in a net set by the drunk hockey playing human.
Both Nate and Vee was so lovable! Vee had some leftover trauma from an accident that happened years ago and Nate in a different country and drunk got told about a lore about the chicken man in the woods.
The whole book was so fun to read and so easy too!

This was such a sweet novella.
Nate and Vee meet in such a crazy unexpected way and then are just completely head over heels for each other. This story was quick but held so much subtext and emotion.
I absolutely loved the German folklore aspect, I found it very interesting. I can’t wait for more stories in this series.

In less than 200 pages you get a wonderful novella that's not only funny as hell, has fated mates written all over it and features an original creature/monster with a unique anatomy, you also get a very sweet, very spicy love story between two gorgeous men: one with a heart that was broken but wants to love again and one with a heart big enough for them both.

I've loved all of Rhea's books and P&P is no exception - I'm really excited for this new book universe she's creating.

“The sight of his ass in those sturdy pants, two firm globes moving under the cute little tail, was more than a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down.”

Well this was a fun, smutty read.

It’s pretty quick and pretty much all smut but was so good. I really enjoyed this one a lot.

I never thought I’d find a chicken man hot, but apparently this book had to prove me wrong 😂 Vee was sweet and the way Nate describes him is so vivid it’s amazing. I loved how he handled Nate and the forest, just a sweetie really. Who was so needy for Nate.

Nate was fun, an American in Germany who really couldn’t speak the language, led astray by a local, but that local had no idea he was really doing Nate a favour.

I loved the devotion between these two. Can’t wait to see what else happens in this series.

- an MM monster (chicken) novella! instalove, fated mates, hockey romance!
- really fun premise!! you catch a chicken man, you get a fated mate
- stop they are both so stinking cute
- interesting pet names…
- my heart breaks when Nate thought he’d done something wrong 🥺
- THEY FEEL EACH OTHERS PAIN
- omg the sex scenes are ridiculously hot 🥵
- this is a lot of them not being able to keep their hands of each other and i am so okay with it
- omg why was it so funny when everyone thought Nate was missing?! everyone was so panicked hahah
- no no Vee WHAT are you doing how could you do this?!
- so there was a TW of a violent death on page (as a flashback) before you start reading which i think is v considerate! but it also came straight before the scene which REALLY took me out of the book
- my poor baby Nate he is so gutted 😭
- look my only gripe with this is that Vee didn’t fall to his knees and BEG forgiveness!! Nate saw him again after SIX WEEKS and just took him back!! like no Vee needed to grovel first then get sex
- i would of liked a chapter from Vee’s POV before they reunite to go through all his thoughts as well felt very abrupt
- like also Vee said he could feel all the anguish Nate could feel as they’re fated and still waited 6 weeks?! Vee i’m angry at you
- when it could of been a v easy convo (which they did eventually have) about neck guards!! silly chicken man
- i still love him tho okay
- so funny when all his old teammates were like ‘oh you two know each other?’
- so glad we got another sec scene!!
- the epilogue was the cutest thing ever omg
- i LOVED THIS SO MUCH, sweet and sexy with such lovely characters 🥹 would of of been 5 stars if Vee had grovelled

This book was decent in the sense that most smutty fantasy books are good, the sex scenes are good but the plot line/story cohesiveness isn't stellar. But honestly, if you're reading smutty fantasy novellas hoping to get a piece of great literature, you're barking up the wrong tree. I definitely don't feel like this was a waste of my time and it was a pretty good way to spend an afternoon. It's a great MM story between a creature and a frat hockey player meeting each other by happenstance and honestly, stupidity, and how they absolute ravage each other and find their mate in each other.

I'm still not really sure how a human and an eagle-like creature would actually kiss in reality, but the author makes it really sound like it would work, so I guess I can be convinced. And despite my best efforts, I cannot picture the dick the author describes the eagle creature having. The best I could do was a kind of balloon animal segmented thing. Which honestly doesn't sound like something I would want anywhere near me.

Worth a read for sure if you want something brainless, quick & easy to read and aren't too concerned about an excellent plot. And I'm always here for the smut!

I saw this book for the first time when the author's IG post about the book being free for a few days. The tags made me laugh. Were the tags accurate? Totally. Chicken Daddy is a real thing. Was this book cheesy? For sure. It was 169 pages and a super quick read. It wasn't bad. It will not be my favorite read of the year. It was a silly little read that met all my expectations. This was kind of all over the place. I knew it was going to be a novela, so I didn't exactly expect any real deep dive into each character, but you really got none at all.

Some parts were hard to follow along with as there were definitely a few sentences here and there that didn't make sense. I had to go back a few times thinking I missed something. Nope. Just details thrown in there for no reason.

One MAJOR peeve of mine was the hockey references. Ex: High Sticking is NOT "hitting someone over the head with the stick"
Also, if you get a misconduct and get 10 minutes, you're basically out of the game. Not sitting in the box for that long. A 10 min penalty would most likely be something that'll get you kicked out. Just sayin'

The author wrote in the description a TW of Dub-Con. That's not what was happening. There's no dub-con or anything remotely dubious in this. Zero angst. I'm thinking she's saying that cause the MC's didn't know why they felt so attracted to each other or why they felt the need to strongly to be with the other? But yeah...id say no TW on that particular aspect.

POV: Dual 1st - Very short chapters
Angst: None
Spice: 3/5
3rd Act Breakup: Kind of, yes. But nothing bad.
Slow Burn: No
HEA: Yes

Wandering around drunk in a forest at the end of October might be a bad idea. But Nate does just that and catches himself a mythical creature. While that was absolutely part of his drunken plan, he gets way more than he bargained for, when the creature introduces himself as Vee and tells Nate, that now he captured him, they are mates.
Vee never believed in the lore, but when he suddenly feels things, that can't be explained as simple as attraction to the frat boy who captured him, he might have to reconsider.

This is an adorable novella! The concept of accidental mates is fun and the instant connection between Nate and Vee had me melting. This isn't a slow burn but Nate and Vee just click and while they try to stay away from each other due to a.traumatic experience in Vee's past, they soon realise that this is not an option. Both man & monster are adorable and 🔥🔥.

If you like your monsters cocky (😉) and bulky (pecs!!!!) your men gorgeous and adorable, then be sure to put "Puck & Plume" on your TBR and thank me later, because this is such a fun, quick, hot and charming novella.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

I really love Rhea and her books. This one didn't quite hit the mark for me. I still really enjoyed it, and it was a super quick read (duh, it's a novella) I think part of my issue may be related to it being a novella? There was a lot of lore/fairy tale / German history that was needed to explain a lot of the plot, but with the shorter length, I think we still missed some key info/moments. It felt like there were bits of scenes and interactions that were missing but were needed for better context or understanding of the relationship between the two MMC.

That being said, it still managed to make me laugh and almost cry, and definitely swoon.

Vee and Decks are so sweet together. Definitely worth a read if you love MM, monster reads, German lore, giant chicken men, hockey players, insta-love, mates, and shower scenes.

I did really love that there was not only a TW at the beginning of the book for a particular scene, but also right before the chapter it happened during. I thought it was super helpful.
