Dad Magic was an amazing book! It had action, adventure, romance, friendship, family, some mystery, and even a little heartbreak. The story and world-building were engaging, interesting, and well-developed. The magic system, utilizing both traditional magic and technology, was a lot of fun and made the story even better. I found myself wishing that I could order some magical fried chicken while I was riding a dragon.

Benjamin Twigg did an impressive job creating the characters in this world. They all had important roles, none of them felt unnecessary or unnatural, and the way they were written really made me connect to, and care for, them. I loved all the queer rep! Pax was definitely my favorite and I would love to see more of him. Much, much more of him. 🥵 😂

Overall, an excellent book and I can’t wait for more!

This book was a lot longer than I expected, and it took me a while to fully get into the story, but I ended up enjoying it once it got going.

I enjoyed Brent and Pax’s unique friendship, as well as the cast of supporting characters, and I liked all of the LGBTQ+ representation.

It was nice to see the older characters forming their own relationships and the focus not just being on Victoria. I particularly enjoyed Brent and Arden’s romance.

The interconnectedness between the characters was a nice added touch.

There was a lot of high fantasy/sci-fi world-building, which took me a bit to get into, and I found the magic system confusing for a while.

I don’t think it needed to be quite as long as it was, and a couple of parts did feel somewhat repetitive, but there were still plenty of twists and turns to keep me interested.

I would have liked to learn a bit more about Brent’s family and his relationship with Elwin. Hopefully, this will be explored more in book two.

Overall I did enjoy the book and am looking forward to finding out what happens next with Brent, Pax, Victoria and the rest of the gang.

Dad Magic is an entertaining fantasy novel and I really enjoyed being in the world. I'd say my favourite part was the characters, they were described so vividly and brought to life so well that I was happy spending time with them regardless of what was going on... and that's great considering we did have some chill moments among the action and chaos!

Things I particularly enjoyed:-
- Father and Daughter Relationship
- Lots of queer rep!
- Easy enough to understand the magic system (it was described well but didn't bog you down, always makes for an easy read!)
- Some romantic elements
- A mixture of character ages! I quite like an older MC!
- It was fun! Who doesn't love a bit of banter? But when it came to handling heavier themes, the author did a great job too! I love a mixture of fun and heavy because it feels realistic...even in a fantasy world.

I reckon a lot of my fantasy friends would enjoy this one! ❤️ If you're not usually a fantasy reader and want something to start with, I'd say this would be a good one too!

I just finished this book and was genuinely blown away. The world building is exceptional, rich, imaginative, and explained in a way that’s incredibly easy to follow, even if you’re not someone who usually reads a lot of magic‑focused stories. I was completely pulled in from the start.
What really stood out to me, though, was the heart of the story. Brent’s journey as a father, trying to protect and understand his teenage daughter while uncovering the truth about her past, adds so much emotional depth to the adventure. The dynamic between Brent and his half orc best friend, Pax, brings warmth and humour to the story, even as the stakes rise with the mysterious Mage’s Union and the dangerous Code Weavers. By the time the larger threat to Spellford comes into focus, you’re already deeply invested in these characters and their relationships. It’s a captivating mix of urban fantasy, family bonds, and high stakes mystery, and it left me wanting to spend even more time in this world.

Loved this debut!

The characters are so much fun. I adore Pax so much. Brent and Victoria's relationship (father daughter) is super believable and very well written!

The plotline and story is really good. It's complex and in a completely unique world/setting/magic system, so you really need to pay attention so you don't miss anything. But in a good way!!

It's non stop action and adventure, and a really enjoyable read.

The only downside for me was that some of the dialogue felt forced and unnatural, but it didn't detract from the plot or my overall enjoyment of the book.

Can't wait for book 2!

Brent Abernathy works with his best friend, the Half-Orc, Pac Grimtusk in magical insurance. After saving the city from a rampaging behemoth, the pair are given jobs working at the Mage's Union.

Brent has to navigate his new position and deal with an underground group called the Code Weavers while also trying to raise his teenage daughter and maybe figure out a new relationship along the way.

That's as much summary as I want to give. There is so much fun here to navigate and I don't want to touch on too many points as it feels really fun to experience the book as it unfolds.

Let me preface to say that the author is a good friend of mine. I will endeavor to remain impartial.

Dad Magic is a lot of fun. The worldbuilding is top notch (filled with so many silly little puns (DAD JOKES)) and this makes the world feel lived-in for the characters. The characters themselves??? You immediately fall in love with them. Victoria is awesome and feels like a real teenager. Pax is a hot nice Orc boy. Brent is coping the best he can. You just feel for them right from the jump.

My one main criticism is that some of the dialogue felt really stilted/too formal maybe? But I read an uncorrected proof copy and I'm fully confident that this has been addressed.
I also felt that the prologue felt really weird and different from the first real chapter but, after discussions with the author, its kind of meant to be this way and its a fun juxtaposition, actually.

The book is really cozy queer family driven, while being a high-stakes mystery-filled urban fantasy. Two things that I thrive on. The "app-magic" system is pretty cool. Like you have a magical data plan for your phone and use it to cast spells. Very unique if not a bit confusing at first? Still pretty cool!

I fully expect the sequel to this book to focus on my close relationship with Pax and how he is my dream man. Additionally I'm looking forward to possibly more exploration of Elwin and Brent's relationship and how that shaped Brent into the man he is today. I'm also looking forward to more meaningful development of the budding romance between Brent and Arden. I was maybe a tiny bit put off by the forwardness of Arden pursuing Brent while also being his boss? Both boys seem fine with it and it is a promising start to a real and meaningful relationship. I just hope its explored in more detail in a sequel.

TL;DR: If you love urban fantasy, queer families, unique magic systems, and/or snarky banter this book is for you!

Thank you to Benjamin Twigg for providing me with an ARC copy of this book. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is a very fun fantasy book taking place in a very creative universe that is sort of like steampunk meets Harry Potter (but, unlike the creator of that series, Benjamin Twigg is not a transphobic monster). The series seems to be queer normative which is pretty cool. I honestly can't remember spotting a named straight character, although people are being born so some variety of sexual reproduction is being done. Perhaps by the bisexuals.

This series follows Brent Abernathy and his best friend Paxton, who work together at a magical insurance firm. One day on their lunch break they interfere with a magical animal attack, which results in them being brought to the attention of the Mages' Union, the magical governance authority in their city. They're brought into the Mage’s Union to help investigate the disappearance of a famous wizard and as the mystery progresses, Brent learns that the mystery has more to do with him than he thought. On top of having to deal with his new job, Brent also deals with his 17-year-old daughter, Victoria, who has her own mysterious past to deal with. In addition to learning how to branch out as an adult without hurting her dad's feelings.

I did have a couple of "complaints" but they're minor. Two of the main viewpoint characters, Brent and Pax, feel that they are old and decrepit at the ripe old age of 37. As someone that is turning 41 this year, I found that somewhat hurtful. Brent in particular often thinks about how he has a dad bod and Pax worries about how he now probably needs glasses. Brent is always getting hit on and thinks "why?", not realizing that some men like a dad bod. When I finally found out how all these allegedly decrepit characters are and found out I was four years older than them, yeah that was hurtful.

The other complaint, if you will, that I had is that the story wraps up pretty quickly. It's relatively evenly, if slow-paced, up until about the 60% mark and then goes all full steam ahead to the conclusion after that. Although the pieces were put together for the resolution in the previous pages, I thought a few more chapters might have been helpful so that the conclusion didn't feel so rushed.

Overall this is a very good book and I definitely enjoyed it. I am looking forward to the other ones in this series.

I knew from the moment I read the synopsis that this book would be right up my alley.

I wasn't wrong.

There is something so joyous about the way Benjamin writes, the way his enthusiasm and wonder come through in his words. You can tell he adores his world, and by extension, the reader does too. I love when tech and magic intermingle, and it's done to perfection in this story. The world building is next level, it's well thought out and tangible, yet familiar enough that as a reader you can fall into Spellfords world and not spend half a book trying to picture where they are or how the magic system works.

But the true magic is in the characters, Brent as the soft-around-the-middle dad who is navigating life and parenthood in the best way he can, all while pining for a life long gone and something more for the future. Pax, his half-orc best friend, with banter for days, a connection on more than one level with Brent and an insatiable appetite for fried chicken (too relatable). Then Victoria, Brent's 17 year old daughter, whose origins are shrouded in mystery and who just wants to be a normal kid...when she's anything but.

The overarching storyline about Brent and Victoria's past is mysterious and compelling, each piece unravelling then knitting together until you have quite a few 'aha' moments. The attraction between Brent and his boss, Arden, is brilliant and peppered with fun; there were also so many parts where I laughed out loud, enjoying the ridiculousness tempered with more solemn topics. But all the banter and the looseness in Benjamin's writing works spectacularly for this world.

If you want to read about:

✨️ found family
✨️ magic & tech infused world
✨️ second chance at love
✨️ dad bod (it's a trope now!)
✨️ father/daughter bond
✨️ queer & disability rep
✨️ banter (soooo much banter)

then you can't pass this book up! You shouldn't anyway.

Please note, this is an honest review as I read it in arc form.

What a fun, magical ride this book was. Instead of my usual style of review where I just word vomit, I thought I’d share a breakdown of the aspects of the book with my thoughts!

Setting: this book is a high urban fantasy set in the city of Spellford, where magic and technology have blended together seamlessly. Twigg is an export world-builder and everything from the ‘witches wagon’ Uber replicas to the time-magic fried chicken felt believable. I especially loved the description of the dragons as well as the smaller details like the TV’s being different. I’m a huge fan of the magic system as well as the representation of popular fantasy species (Pax the half-orc will always have my heart)!

Characters: this book is incredibly diverse and Twigg has worked hard to give authentic representation. This book is first and foremost for the LGBT+ peeps and as a gay man I bloody loved every word. The main character is gay, his best friend is gay, and I love that they’re representative of an age group who isn’t often focused on in fiction. Victoria, Brent’s daughter, is also bisexual. Most side characters are LGBT+ and my favourite part is that being LGBT in Twigg’s universe is just an accepted part of life. There is no romantic prejudice or anything - nothing but queer joy.

Plot: the plot was complex with many twists and turns. The book had a very strong start with the behemoth attack, a compelling middle that further developed the plot and characters, and a satisfying end that tied up the main plotlines. There were a few minor side-plot holes, but I can’t wait for them to be further explored in the sequel! 🤩

Writing style: the POVs written throughout the novel were distinct from each other. It was witty at times and descriptive (I especially loved when the setting was described in the club and the abandoned location of Eriomsa). Twigg’s writing style is unique and full of character.

What a ride I have been on reading this debut novel. The opening chapters introduce us to fantastical characters in a magical world, who feel so real and relatable. It's the first time in a long time that I have read a fantasy book and felt like I can relate to the characters in the book. Here are some of the elements I loved in this story:

As we start getting to know Victoria, Brent and Paxxy in the introductory chapters, we are hit with humour one moment and heavy hitting emotional moments the next. Where one doesn't overshadow the other and both elements are beautifully placed. I appreciated the puns and quick wit interspersed throughout. They were never out of place and gave the fantastical characters humanity.

The world of magic and its rules sets are built around us while learning our powerful characters face the same problems, experiences and insecurities as we do. They are perfectly imperfect, with strengths and vulnerabilities. We are faced with heavy and confronting themes that are treated with dignity and respect. Since we have spent time getting to know our main characters so well, the actions they take throughout the story are valid and understandable. They make sense.

I loved the modern take on magic. The descriptions of its applications were believable and consistent. The magic and how it became more pertinent to the major plot was foreshadowed and believable. Further, actions taken by our characters in response to this were consistent to rule sets given at the start. Which is so important to me as it's been a long time since I've read a fantasy book that has taken careful consideration to how magic operates in it's world.

Lastly, as the plot unfolds, we are also introduced to the different types of love and how it plays in the larger narrative. We see love in the sense of romantic and family. These elements are not tacked on, they are integral to the story and our characters. Without the love between our central characters, they would not be able to face and overcome the trials and tribulations of the story. It was perfectly balanced as all things should be.

I’ve grown close with Benjamin via social media, so this review will be extremely unbiased, trust me.

This is such an exciting debut. The storytelling and world-building Ben accomplishes in this novel is incredibly thorough, realistic, and accessible. The way he blends magic and modern tech feels so natural, and he does it all in such a concise, effortless manner—a feat that’s nothing short of magical in itself.
Set in the city of Spellford, where spells meet smartphones, the story centers on Brent Abernathy—a single dad, mage, and all-around relatable hero. He’s raising his teenage daughter, Victoria, while juggling magical chaos, friendship, and uncovering a conspiracy involving the Mage’s Union and the underground rebels, the Code Weavers. Oh, and his best friend is a half-orc named Paxton Grimtusk (easily one of my favorite sidekicks ever).
What really hooked me was the family dynamic. Watching Brent navigate fatherhood while grappling with his past and protecting Victoria from a looming threat tugged at my heartstrings. It’s also refreshing to see queer representation so thoughtfully done, especially in a story about love, sacrifice, and family bonds.
Twigg’s writing is immersive, the pacing is spot on, and the characters are as flawed and lovable as you’d hope. I laughed, teared up, and rooted for Brent the whole way. If you’re a fan of urban fantasy with heart and ingenuity, "Dad Magic" will cast its spell on you.

This was one of my most highly anticipated releases of the year and it did not disappoint.

The world building is great - I loved the Urbantasy theme; mixing modern day life with magic. I loved all the fast food chains, delivery services, Runephones, app magic. It was so specific and detailed without being overly complex, it made it so easy to become enveloped in this world.

The characters all felt *so* relatable - Pax is my favourite and, without giving anything away, I felt really connected to him in some of the later chapters.

I also loved the full scope of themes we had in this book - a bit of YA when we follow Victoria and her teenage experiences of school, theme parks, first crushes, fantasy and adventure (of course), romance, grief, heartbreak, friendship, found family, plus many more. I truly think this book has something for everyone.

The story was compelling and had me gripped. Who could we trust? Who has an agenda? What’s X and Y characters origin story?

This was such a great read. It was fun, it was funny - particularly with the ease of banter between some of the characters - but it also didn’t lack depth; it dealt with its more serious themes emotively and respectfully, which for me, as a reader, made me feel deeply connected. And I think that is down to the empathic writing of Benjamin Twigg.

This was a great debut and I look forward to reading what comes next from this author.

We love a fun, wholesome book with a hot name. We all need some Dad Magic in our lives.

I adored this book, the author blends the magic world with modern tech in such a seamless way, it’s a very cool take on magic worlds.

The book follows Brent as he rediscovers what is like to be a mage and when a series of events make him step out of his comfort zone and try to uncover a conspiracy involving the Mage´s union with the help of his daughter Victoria and his half orc bestie Paxton.

This was such a fun ride, I love the family dynamic between all the characters, Paxton is such a breath of fresh air and his friendship with Brent was a so endearing to read.

We get a romance subplot but I’m happy it was not the main focus of the story, although it was nice to see slightly older characters fall in love. The story and the family dynamic are front and center in this story and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Get yourself some Dad Magic.

Benjamín Twigg has built a truly magical world in his book Dad Magic. It’s a twist on this fantastical trope that is different and fun with a variety of diverse characters.

There are minor romantic elements in the story, and a spicy scene to make readers sweat. But this book is more about the friendship between Brent and Pax, and the relationship with Brent's daughter Victoria. This culminates in mystery, adventure, and a lot of "AHA" moments! While having that epic romance or toe curling spice in our lives is great, knowing we are supported and loved always is a perfect foundation for any HEA.

Benjamin fills the book with mental health representation, queer representation, as well as having older characters play an important part in the adventure!

If you are ready for a story filled with diversity, friendship, love of all kinds, and found family, get this book!

First off - Thank you to Benjamin Twigg for providing me with an ARC of this book. I’m writing this review of my own free will. Actually daring 4.5/5 but Goodreads won’t let me add that point five haha

This book was beautiful!! Let’s just start there. It ticked every box right off the bat:

- Cozy Urban Fantasy ✅
- Found Family ✅
- LGBTQ+ Rep ✅
- Disability Rep ✅
- Slightly older MCs (huge ✅ as someone older than a teenager)
- Interesting and unique magic system ✅

This book was full of humour, snarky banter, an amazingly unique magic system and just incredibly interesting and realistic characterisations.

Benjamin’s love for what has been written shines through and that adds to all the things that made this book a joy to read!

I am super excited for the sequel to further explore the character dynamics and flesh things out. I’m waiting with bated breath so I guess I’d better just go re-read this book (and invest in a physical copy to display proudly on the shelf)!

Brent had a pretty average life selling magical insurance at Sorcerysure with his best mate Pax and raising his teenage daughter Victoria but that quickly changes in the first chapter when a behemoth starts destroying the city.
With the Mage's Union nowhere in sight, Brent with his Adventurer Dad-bod and Pax with a mouth full of Chrono's chicken sprint toward the beast to handle it themselves before anyone in Spellford gets hurt..
Dad Magic is so full of love that even when the events taking place are chaotic, the love between characters is still front and centre

Ben's writing is so easy to get hooked in, he doesn't molest a theasaurus with his wording, he uses descriptions that are easy to visualize and feel. One minute you're laughing about magic lube and the next you're wishing Brent would adopt you.

Dad Magic was such a fun ride! Think Dungeons & Dragons meets Marvel, with a big heart and loads of humour.

I absolutely loved the banter between Brent and Pax. Their friendship is hilarious, chaotic, and full of heart. Pax totally stole every scene for me (and his fried chicken obsession is iconic - Half Orc after my own heart!). Victoria is an absolute boss. Total badass energy from start to finish.

Ben’s imagination shines through every page. I adored all the clever, magical twists on normal, everyday things. The queer rep is natural, joyful, and baked right into the world. And can we please get more Brent and Arden time? I’m desperate!

The ending was EPIC and left me desperate for book two. If you love magic, misfits, and found family, you’ll love this one.

DAD MAGIC is an incredible mix of sci-fi and fantasy, action and mystery, with a dash of romance here and there to add some more drama to the characters' lives. And what lives they live! Magic spawned from technology, fried chicken made with time magic, and gargantuan beasts to match Pax's gargantuan appetite - there's something for everybody in this book!

As a woman I thought Victoria's story would appeal to me most in this book, but I actually found myself looking forward to her father's chapters more. Brent has so much going on in his life - he's grieving, he's learning to love again, he's battling monsters internally and externally, he's trying to work out his new job and all the secrets being uncovered through it, and after all that he's trying to be a good dad to his daughter, who has her own struggles to deal with. It's hard to balance things when a character has this much going on, but Twigg has done an amazing job of it!

There is so much to unpack in this novel that I couldn't possibly do it without spoiling anything, so all I'll say is I'm really looking forward to the next installment! Get on top of this debut while it's fresh!

It’s so rare these days to be pulled in by a completely unique world. The contemporary fantasy vibes with a completely different magic system based on phone apps (on top of some innate magical abilities for some) make this an enjoyable and unique read that’ll stay in the mind for a long time.

The world and storyline that is created by Benjamin in this book is absolutely stunning and amazing. You feel like you are living in this magical world.

The three main characters that the story centers itself around are lovable, exciting, and enjoyable to see how they grow through this story. They center themselves around love and helping one another out no matter what stands in their way.

I am excited to see what Benjamin has for the future of this saga!

You will not regret picking up this book! Just make sure you have the next 8 hours spare because you won’t want to put it back down again.

Is such an easy read in the sense that I just don’t want to put it down, it’s not work to stay engaged, no one will be saying “just push through the first one because the rest of the series is good”
You won’t have to fight to stay on track because the author has filled the story with such immense detail and twists to keep you right in the middle of all the action.

So many clever word plays throughout this book, I cannot get enough. Red-Mage Rooster? Pep-Up Max? ICONIC. Ben thinks of EVERYTHING.

Dad Magic by Benjamin Twigg is just a pure delight. A single dad & his orc best friend sort of accidentally save a bunch of people. On camera.
Now things are happening, & his new boss is hot, & his kid is growing up, & did I mention that his new boss is hot?
Cosy, queer, funny, with spice and heart

Scan and redeem. Imagine connecting to the phone and stimulating magic as you wish.

Marquis Beaumont came to Suncrest for one purpose—to capture the Queen of Suncrest, Queen Emilia, and get his revenge for what she did to his wife, determined to harness her unmatched magical powers for his own.

Brent Abernathy, the “Dad-Bod” Hero of Spellford, lives with his adopted daughter Victoria—half-elf; last of Erimosia—and kind-hearted half-Orc best friend, Pax. In a world now using app-based magic, Brent’s old-school skills earn him and Pax roles in the Mage’s Union after defeating the Behemoth. Their first mission: investigate Marquis Beaumont’s disappearance, with clues pointing to Brent and Victoria. Without him knowing, Victoria is an Aphonic Mage who can cast magic without tools and dreams of working with dragons, her powers revealed during a school dare that draws Professor Nia’s attention.

Dad Magic is giving me serious “Who’s your daddy?” vibes—in the most magical, chaotic, and unexpectedly heartwarming way possible. It’s fun, light, direct to the point, adventurous, and has some unexpected WTF moments, lol! It’s giving me Sabrina the Teenage Witch sitcom feels, one of my favorite TV series growing up. It’s like watching Batman and Robin—Brent with Pax as his sidekick. This reader-friendly book is one of a kind! It explores friendship, family, and letting go. With no bloody fights or brutal scenes, the tension still builds with the villains: Weaver—Void King-Cyrus, Marquis 1, and Marquis 2. The magic-tech blend is a blast, with strong parent-child themes, millennial parenting, and Gen Z identity. Honestly, if that’s not reason enough to pick up this book, I don’t know what is—go read it now if you haven’t already!

A big thanks to Benjamin Twigg for sending me a digital ARC of this book!

I just realized that I've been reading a lot of debut novels of late, and Dad Magic by Benjamin Twigg is another one. I love my fantasy/science fiction/romance with adventure, so I was intrigued by the blurb, but I was worried about the mix of genres. I was open, and you are not going to be sorry for picking this book up. I will say, please make sure you have at least 8 hours free because you're not putting this book down once you pick it up.

The world-building is out of this world. I was so amazed. It was fantastical and magical and had new world tech. All of this was just so brilliantly used. All of this together was just so much fun.

Adventurers Pax and Brent, I loved them. I wish they could have stayed adventurers rather than turning into insurance salesmen to live mundane lives. Well, as mundane, a life a half-orc with a friends chicken obsession and a mage with a slowly receding hairline, who also happens to be a single dad of a 17 year-old girl.

I love these characters they has such fun arcs. The heat and chemistry Brent has with his boss is so fun. Our characters have such a beautiful and rich backstory, and we juxtapose personalities at times. This dynamic, as strange as it can seem at times, does actually work and makes it a fun read.

This is just a fun read that while the magic is new and original, you will find it mesmerising and easy to follow. You could almost create a book of lore and a guidebook for this book based on what you read in Dad Magic. Read this book. You will not regret it. It's fun. It's new, and it's a great debut novel for an author who has great potential.

For the lovers of all things fanatsy/sci fi/ romance and adventure, this book will blow you away.
I was immediately drawn into Spellford's whimsical modern world. The world-building in this book is spectacular. The combination of fantasy magic and new-world tech is brilliant but also so fun.

Brent and Pax are two adventurers, now insurance salesmen who have seemingly normal lives. If you think being half-orc with a friend's chicken obsession and a mage with a slowly receding hairline, who is a single dad to a 17-year-old, is... normal. When a monster behemoth comes into town and starts destroying Spellford, the retired adventure springs into action, saving the day, which embarrasses Victoria, Brent's daughter, and lands Pax (half-orc) and Brent in a new job. Where Brent finds his new boss incredibly attractive.

I could rave about how much I instantly fell in love with the main characters, with such a rich backstory and juxtaposing personalities at times. The dynamic was authentic and just worked! Between Pax and Brent, you can feel the years of friendship by how easily Ben narrates the dialogue between them.

One of my favourite quotes:
"Did he show you his big thick wand?" Pax giggled and Brent chuckled along with him.
"Get your mind out of the-" and he stopped himself "wait what do Orcs have for gutters?"
"Troughs? How would I know? I was raised with a human parent."

I could go on for ages about how FUN this book is without a slow moment throughout, just amazing ebbs and flows. The magic is original and mesmerising, the lore you could almost have a guide for it alone, but it isn't confusing to the reader. You will love the journey all the characters go on.

For a debut novel, it's FANTASTIC!
