The Debutante Dares #4

Don't You Dare, My Dear

Rate this book
In this sizzling Regency romance by Charlie Lane, a cheerful viscount would rather have the grumpy chaperone than the daring debutante. If only the latter didn't prove to be quite so resistible.

After the woman he loves rejects his marriage proposal, Edmund Crenshaw, Viscount Escher, has sworn off women. If he can’t marry Mrs. Katherine Brighton, he’ll marry no one. When he discovers a daring debutante in his coach, intent on seduction, he’ll do anything to protect his bachelorhood. He must remain uncompromised or doom himself and the lady to a loveless marriage. Because his heart always has, and always will, belong to only one woman—his Kat.

Katherine must escape her younger sister’s insidious grasp. This Season, she has a heart of steel and a plan for independence. As the secret author of a popular out-of-print book, she will convince the publisher to reprint it and fill her coffers with funds enough to live on her own. The publisher agrees—if she writes a new book as well. But with every moment of her day spent helping her sister, she desperately needs a muse.

And Lord Escher, the man whose marriage proposal she reluctantly rejected two years ago, sparks her imagination like no one else. To write her book, she must stay near Edmund. In exchange, he requires her help ridding himself of a persistent miss. They’ll solve both problems in no time. If they can keep their hands off each other.

Can she protect her heart and her freedom, or will the cheerful viscount tempt her to say yes this second time around?

The fourth book in the series but it’s easily read on its own. A well written fun, humorous, entertaining read with lovely characters. I loved both Edmund & Kat they were like chalk & cheese but perfect for each other & the chemistry between the pair sizzled. I thoroughly disliked Chrissy who was basically a spoilt brat & I just wanted to slap her. I loved Edmund & Kat’s journey to a HEA & the catch up with characters from previous stories. A captivating read which made me laugh

Thanks to Booksprout and NetGalley for copies of this book; this is my freely given opinion.

This is the 4th book in the Debutante Dares series, featuring Katherine, a more background character in the previous books; a widow who was at times played the chaperone or companion, especially to Jane, from book 2.

Katherine is a widow, and the story opens a couple of years before the time period of the bulk of the novel. During that time, she has met Edmund, Viscount Escher, the brother of Jane, and son of a widowed earl. They share of love of literature and have become good friends, and Edmund has decided that he wants to marry Katherine. The day he decides to propose, nothing goes right for him... and ultimately it ends in disaster because just before he pops the question, prior mishaps notwithstanding, he finds out that his father has just proposed to Katherine's younger sister. Ultimately this would make them family... but Edmund still decides to propose anyways. However, Katherine had spent a large portion of her life bending to the will of her younger sister, to make life easier for Chrissy, and as such, the younger sister has ended up becoming quite spoiled and a little tyrant, using Katherine for everything. As such, Katherine declines Edmund's proposal, with great regret, because she absolutely cannot stand the idea of continuing to live in a house with Chrissy there to dominate and domineer Katherine's time and energy. Edmund's heart is broken...

Fast forward a couple of years. Edmund is still a bachelor, deciding that if he cannot have Katherine, he will stay unwed. Katherine, despite her excuses to Edmund, is still living with Chrissy and essentially doing all the duties of a Countess, without the benefits, or any benefit, including privacy, respect, gratitude, or appreciation. They live in the same household, and Edmund is confused because she did not leave to live independently as she said she wanted; and when he thought he was getting over her, she muddied the waters further by giving into temptation and sleeping with him.

Katherine hates how she is treated, and hates the reminder of what she gave up. She has a plan to gain independence though, and that involves a secret she has, that she was a successful author of several children's books in the past, under her husband's publishing business, and she wants to approach the ex-partner to republish them. But he will only reissue them if Katherine writes new stories. Katherine initially is a bit stymied as she hasn't been inspired to write for awhile and has many things on her plate, doing what Chrissy and the Earl demand of her, as a poor relation living with them (aka unpaid serf). Edmund has decided to try to see what Katherine really feels about him and see where a relationship can go. He ends up becoming her muse for new stories, and they end up falling into a passionate affair.

Chrissy and the Earl are terrible, interfering life-sucking selfish, navel gazers who resent anyone taking Katherine's time, because that means that Chrissy has to take some responsibility, which upsets her, which in turn upsets the Earl because then he has to deal with it. As such, they interfere in the Katherine and Edmunds lives and plans for the future. I have to admit I rather despised both those characters for what selfish a--holes they were being. But then again, some of the fault lies with Katherine and Edmund too, for letting them get away with it and enabling the behaviour to begin with. I just with Katherine grabbed her own happiness to begin with, rather than let her sister dictate her life... but then again, if that were the case, we would not have this story, would we?

This was a fun addition to the series. I enjoy Charlie Lane's writing because she has such amusing prose, and a joyful way of spinning an amusing story.

3.5 stars out of 5.

Don’t You Dare, My Dear by Charlie Lane is the fourth book in the Debutante Dares series. After Mrs. Katherine Brighton turns down his marriage proposal, Edmund Crenshaw, Viscount Escher, refuses to marry anyone else. He will only marry Katherine. When he discovers a debutante in his coach, Edmund is determined to prevent a scandal that would force him into marriage with the girl. Katherine longs to escape the grasp of her needy younger sister. Katherine is secretly the author of a popular out-of-print book. She convinces a publisher to reprint it if she writes another as well. Edmund, the man she reluctantly refused to marry, becomes her muse. In exchange for his help with her book, she helps him rid himself of the debutante. Sparks fly between Katherine and Edmund, and Katherine might just say yes this time around.

This book is a fun read. I liked the dynamic between Edmund and Katherine. I will definitely check out the rest of the series!

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

Mrs Katherine Brighton has spent most of her life, before and after marriage, caring for her younger sister, Christiana. She's ready to take charge of her own life, and when Edmund, Lord Escher, proposes, she's wants to say yes more than anything. However, Chrissy gets engaged on that very day to Edmund's father, and she can't be a countess without her sister helping, can she? After two years, Katherine needs to escape, and sharing a night with Edmund proved that she won't ever be able to forget him, but she needs to be away from Chrissy. Edmund will do whatever it takes to prove they should be together, but can Katherine be convinced?

I liked Katherine and Edmund when we met them in previous books, and it was clear there was a history there between them. Falling in love, only to be torn apart by relatives marrying was heartbreaking, and Edmund was sick of being so close, but also so far. I liked the fact that Katherine had her own life before Edmund, and she had a plan to save herself - through her writing, though it wasn't going to be easy. The added plot line of Lady Edith being after Edmund was funny, and I hope her story is next, because she deserves happiness - just not with Edmund.

Edmund, Lord Escher's heart's desire is to marry Katherine, Mrs. Brighton, a widow. Edmund's proposal goes to the wayside when his father proposes to Katherine's sister before he can propose to Katherine. Katherine does everything for her younger sister, Chrissy, and won't consider Edmund's proposal now that her sister is marrying the earl. WHINE! WHINE! WHINE! For two years, Edmund has put his life on hold waiting for Katherine. He wants their relationship to change, but he isn't sure he can convince Katherine to let go and live her own life. I do not, do not like Chrissy at all. She is one of the most selfish characters I've recently read in a book. The way she manipulates Katherine is heartbreaking. Let's not mention Lady Edith. Edmund is very funny and unlike any other hero. He tends to take things in stride and goes with the flow with a charming smile, but.... he can be one fierce viscount when protecting Katherine. My favorite part of the book has to be the epilogue with an outstanding performance by Edmund.❤️

Viscount Escher (Edmond) arrives at a cottage to propose to Katherine Brighton. She is a widow with no children and they have been courting. Just before he gets to the question her sister arrives home announcing the news that she is engaged to be married to no less that Edmond’s father. Katherine has spent her life caring for her spoiled and hapless sister and declines Edmond knowing they’d all be in the same household together. Fast forward two years and Katherine is still taking care of all the duties her sister should be. Edmond still would like to marry Katherine and he is being pursued by a young debutant neighbor. Katherine is finally taking matters in hand trying to get out from her under her sister's thumb.

The premise starts well but then the story bogs down. I didn’t love the whole matchmaking for the debutante storyline. And the main reason Edmond couldn’t set up his own household was his sister so I’m not clear why once she was married it didn’t occur to him to do something then. I think part of the issue is that we we never see Edmond and Katherine fall in love or court. It has already occurred. They do get a couple outings as a second chance but its more about them getting intimate. I liked Katherine and wanted her out from her sister’s manipulations but I didn’t care if she got with Edmond, someone else or even on her own. I read as a stand alone. It is part of a series and if their courtship is part of another book it might explain their connection more.

Thank you to NetGalley, Wolf Publishing and the author for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a wonderfully romantic story. It is also charming and funny. Edmund and Katherine have a relationship that seem destined to never have a happy ending but he is a man on a mission. Edward after being thwarted in his efforts to propose waits years because he will have no other. His acts of chivalry are insanely funny and determined. He proves his loyalty over and over to win the love of his one and only. Katherine is loyal and lovely and the perfect foil to the impetuous Viscount.

I picked this book because I was under the assumption that it was the first in the series. I realised later that it was the fourth. That did not impact the narrative but did take away a little from understanding the bonds between the women central to the plot or the concept of 'daring'.
The covers are a little too strange for my taste. I would not have picked it up if not for the ratings and my mood at the time when I first came across it. I am glad I do so, however. There was a time when I read a lot of this genre, but it has been a while since I read and liked a book in this regency-romance-type genre, and I had fun with this one.
The fourth book revolves around a widow with a very annoying younger sister. I found the overall balance between the characters interesting since the supporting cast had shades of grey, which had them behaving unexpectedly at certain times. A group of women have come together over time and poor personal decisions to form a sort of club where we can see a trend of who the next book about would be.
The plot of the book is standard, but the writing and the characters made it a satisfying read. There are two annoying women who are asking more than others want to give them, but they end up quite distinct, which is not always a common thing to encounter.
It was a quick read, with intimate scenes not going into too much graphic detail and the little there was, I could easily skip without losing out on the story itself.
I think fans of this genre will like this series.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

Well here’s another sweet and charming book from Charlie Lane that will have you wanting to read the book again. The romance was completely obvious between Katherine and Edmund in the prologue of the story. He was obviously smitten with Katherine even though he stepped in poop droppings. Katherine was charmed by Edmunds boyishness. I like that the writer focused on the romance between the two. The story was easy to read. It has some realism to it.

Better each book

Loved Katherine and Edmund. Was incredibly frustrated by the way Kat martyred herself to coddle Chrissie, as well as the equally horrid Edith. No book needs two spoiled brats wreaking havoc!

Mercifully, everyone shines in the end. Phew!

This is a really charming second chance romance between a Viscount and a widow acting as a lady’s companion to her sister. Charlie Lane’s writing is quick paced, easily engaging and full of well rounded characters. This is the forth book in a series, and the first one of this series I have read, and I found that it could easily be read as a standalone.

When Edmond’s father gets himself engaged to his lives sister, he finds his plans of marriage thrown out because Katherine wants to escape her younger sisters heavy hand. Years later, Katherine is still stuck under her sisters thumb and Edmond is ready to do anything to fully claim her as his own, especially after a passion night during Christmas that they spent together.

Edmond is such a kind and swoon worthy hero, he is so in love with Katherine that he has been patient with her feelings while he has waited for her. I just love a hero who is gone for his heroine and pines for her from the beginning. Katherine is smart and strong, and is ready for her independence. I love that Katherine must learn to put herself first. I love that once Katherine embraces her love for Edmond she slowly learns to ask for what she needs and will do anything to get it. I love that these two learn to work together and trust each other. They learn to understand the other which makes their relationship strong and equal. Their relationship is full of consent, sensual chemistry and listening and supporting.

Charlie Lane’s novels always have a wonderful and charming relationship at their heart that makes them well worth the read. Definitely check this novel out if you are new or an old fan of Charlie Lane’s!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

The 4th in the series, but do enjoy reading it as a standalone. Katherine has always put everyone needs and wants before her own. Raising her sister and always doing for her was second nature to her, but when her love proposes to her at the same time his father proposes to her sister, she of course puts her desires aside for her younger sister.. Edmund lives in his father’s home only to be near Katherine, but something doesn’t make sense to him. The reasons Katherine turned him down, doesn’t fit to why she is still living here with her sister two years later.
The story is about learning to put oneself first and learning to let others find there way and grow, and lastly never give up on love.

Kat and Edmund . . .

Two years previous, Katherine Brighton felt she had to reject the marriage proposal from Edmund Crenshaw, Viscount Escher. Because he loves only her, he has sworn off women. But a determined debutante intends to make him marry her, no matter what it takes. He does not wish to settle for a loveless marriage and must carefully remain uncompromised by this young woman.

Kat in the meantime makes an arrangement with a book publisher to republish a previous book of hers plus a new one. This is under her secret author guise. The money she earns will let her live on her own away from her draining sister who can do nothing for herself and relies on Kat. But Lord Escher has become her muse and she needs him close by to inspire her writing. So they make a bargain that Kat will help Edmund get rid of the annoying debutante if he will stay close to her. As their attraction grows, will Kat perhaps reconsider his marriage offer this time?

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free e-arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own

This was such a fun, delightful book!! Edmund and Katherine were wonderful main characters and I was sucked into their story and throughly engaged. I love me a pragmatic heroine and a soft hero

I especially identified not only with Katherine 's desire to make her own way and be her own person, but also her fear and hesitancy to do so and how there was always a reason that she hadn't started yet, without even meaning to put it off. I've been feeling like I'm there myself lately, so it hit home especially hard and was so nice to see

The plot was fun, if a bit over the top, but in a good way. I adored Edmund and his schemes xD

It was a strange premise, the way Edmund and Katherine were connected, and I felt the book kept drawing attention to it which only made it weirder. And their was far more sex than I expected. I skipped at least one full chapter. But also, it's a romance, so expected, just was a lot more than I anticipated

All in all, it was a fun read with characters I throughly enjoyed! Even though I haven't read the previous books I wasn't lost, and had a lot of fun getting lost in Edmund and Katherine's story 💕

A delightful tale that soars to new heights as a hot air balloon on a summer’s day! Charlie Lane does it again, an exciting story that I could not put down. Katherine has always put everyone else first, given up much for her sisters happiness and allowed her own to wither. Edward, has stood by, biding his time because he loves her. That love, gives her the strength to pit herself first and the story that ensues is both beautiful and exciting. At the heart of The Debutante Dares is friendship, it is a remarkable love that empowers each of the girls to reach for their hearts desire. What makes the stories so utterly compelling is the growth of character. Each person in these stories has to come to some personal revelations and overcome their own shortcomings to find the strength that they already possess. Edward overcomes his own flighty nature to find the serious side to ground him, Katherine overcomes her lack of confidence to take charge of her own destiny and even Chrissy overcomes her selfish tendencies and incompetence to become a self-sufficient woman. I am completely in love with the power of the dare and it’s ability to unleash the stronger person within.

Netgalley and Wolf Publishing for providing an ARC to review.

In this sizzling Regency romance by Charlie Lane, a cheerful viscount would rather have the grumpy chaperone than the daring debutante. If only the latter didn't prove to be quite so irresistible.

I give this book a 2.5/5. I wanted to love this book. The character intro was well done, and the twist to keep the OTP (One True Pairing) apart was unique and unexpected. But then everything just fizzled into a mess. Every time I thought of DNFing this novel, the writer created some witty dialogue that kept me invested, but it wasn't enough to make me recommend this novel.

Charlie Lane’s “Don't You Dare, My Dear” (The Debutante Dares Book 4)

Edmund Crenshaw, Viscount Escher, has a heart for one woman and one woman only. Adamant not to marry another, he finds himself plagued by a woman intent on his ruinations of her. Resigned not to live in a loveless marriage he must be rid of her. Mrs. Katherine Brighton, the woman who rejected him two years ago, an independent young woman and author in secret is writing a new book. She needs to be around Edmond to get away from her spoiled and selfish younger sister, Chrissy, whom she has selflessly given everything to since her parents death.

Plots within the plot keep this story moving until all are resolved and tied up nicely. It was a good feeling seeing this couple get their happily ever after. The ending was wonderful! Even Chrissy grows up a bit. I enjoyed visiting Jane and George, Tabitha and Lillian from the prior books. It’s always nice to see them faring well.

I enjoy Charlie Lane’s writing, her descriptive style which leads to wonderful imagery, her delightful wit and humor which leads to a charming story of love and romance. I enjoyed this story but found myself wanting to teach Chrissy a few lessons. While I liked Edmond and Katherine I think I wanted more from themCharlie Lane’s “Don't You Dare, My Dear” (The Debutante Dares Book 4)

Y’all…phew…look here. THIS book took me through some thangs tuhday!!! Can’t you tell…I’ve totally moved away from spelling my words correctly I’m so rattled. I cannot recall EVER, in all my years of reading, having called a character a c*nt during the prologue…but baeBAY…I did today! And then I cried…like really ugly, heartbreaking tears because I was already invested in a couple I had yet to really meet.

Don’t You Dare, My Dear is a charming, fun and highly entertaining book filled with amazing characters. As you can tell by my commentary above, the characters are so vividly written that they jump off the page, inspiring all sort of emotion. The two MCs are wonderful…and the supporting casts…you’ll absolutely adore most of them.

Edmund Crenshaw, Viscount Escher is by FAR the best character in this book. I love everything about him. His cheerful disposition, his energetic playfulness and his ability to show his affection without reserve and hesitancy. He is the complete opposite of his lady love, Katherine, who on the surface appears serious and practical. But in truth, she’s warm, outspoken and funny. Always willing to do whatever is necessary for the ones she loves, Katherine goes above and beyond for the ones she loves…including her ungrateful a*s sister.

A chance meeting in a bookstore after the death of Edmunds mom brings he and Katherine together. The unscrupulous and selfish acts of their family kept them apart. After turning down his proposal, Katherine works to put her life back together. No longer willing to live his life without the woman he loves, Edmund is determined to win her back.

Look here…this book is awesome. I really enjoyed it. It was just LIVELY… like a breath of fresh air. It’s all because of the characters. Edmund is ALWAYS up to something. His friends are just plain adorable. Some, not all…but some of the secondary characters were AWEFUL people. I mean like the Worst. People. EVER. I truly applaud Charlie Lane, for I’ve never hated secondary characters to the point I wanted to put the book down. Well done Charlie…Well done. You wrote them so well that I cursed throughout the book. That said…if you’re looking for a light and fun read…this book is for you!

***1/2 stars- Edmund Crenshaw, the Viscount Escher, is in love with Mrs. Katherine Brighton. Unfortunately the day he was going to ask Katherine to marry him, his father the Earl asked Katherine’s sister, Chrissy to marry him first. Katherine rejected his proposal since her sister was marrying Edmund’s father. The woman that Edmund loves is technically his aunt now.

For the last two years Katherine has been her sister’s companion. Katherine’s sister Chrissy is selfish and depends on Katherine for everything.
Katherine wants to start writing novels again so she can become independent. She uses Edmund as the inspiration for the lead character in her novel. One evening, Edith, a debutante, sneaks into Edmund’s carriage trying to compromise herself. Edmund needs Katherine’s help. He hopes she can help him avoid marriage to Edith.

This is the fourth book in the Debutante Dares. It can be read without reading the previous books. Edmund is Jane’s brother who we met in an earlier book in the series. We also got to see Tabitha, Lillian, and Jane from the previous books. It is always nice to visit with characters from earlier books. This story is a second chance at love for Edmund and Katherine. Can they overcome the obstacles in their way? Edmund is a cheerful and charming character. Edmund has been very patient and loyal. He is still in love with Katherine. If he cannot marry Katherine he will not marry anyone. Katherine still has feelings for Edmund. Will Katherine acknowledge her love for Edmund? At times Katherine’s reasons for not being with Edmund was annoying. She wants to get away from being under her sister’s constant neediness but she does not see Edmund as her way out.

The story started out slow. I was not drawn to Edmund and Katherine being together. I did not feel the love between them. The story does pick up and eventually I started to root for them to be together. This is my least favorite in the series but it was still a good book overall. I will read the next book about Edith. I received a free copy of this book from Wolf Publishing and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

I received an ARC of this book from Wolf Publishing. It’s part of The Dubutante Dares’ series, and finally tells the story of Edmund and Katherine. I’ve given the book only four stars because, while I thoroughly enjoyed the writing, I found parts of the plot and actions of the characters absolutely infuriating. Christiana (step-mother of Edmund and Jane) was incredibly annoying in A Dare Too Far, but in this story, the steps it up to a whole new level. In fact, the prologue, during which we are introduced to Christiana and Thomas, as well as Edmund and Katherine had me ready to pull my hair out. I could not have imagined more self-aborbed and self-centered characters than Christiana and Thomas, but I think it was Edmund’s tendency to make excuses for his father and Katherine’s tendency to coddle her sister that pushed me to my limits. It was difficult for me to have any respect for any of them—Christiana was self-centered, Thomas was self-entitled, Katherine was a doormat, and Edmund was helpless. Really, both Edmund and Katherine allowed themselves to be victims, and I find it difficult to feel compassion for people who refuse to stand up for themselves. I like strong heroes.

So, from the start, I had a problem. I didn’t like the characters. However, I reminded myself that I had liked them in the previous book, so I decided to give them a chance to prove themselves to me. They both had a journey to make, and ultimately, they did make it.

One of the things that impresses me about this author’s writing is her ability to echo certain metaphors throughout the book, creating a kind of metaphorical theme. In this metaphorical theme, love takes the shape of a curve of the body. When Katherine and Edmund are just beginning to know one another, not long after his mother has died, she observes this about him. “‘There’s a certain inward hollow of your shoulders when you’re thinking of your mother. Like a fallen tree.’ She whispered the last words, and they fell right on top of him. One by one, hammering him into the ground.” Not only does love take the shape of a curve, but the curve is also compared to a fallen tree, and then it is used to hammer him into the ground, where the tree would be growing. Much later in the story, Edmund finds himself admiring Katherine. “He kept his gaze trained on the curve of her back. If love had a shape, it would be that curve.” Unfortunately, I’m afraid my attempts to dissect the imagery and highlight its reappearance only serve to emphasize my inferiority in this regard. The important thing is that I’m impressed by the author.

I loved the banter between Edmund and his best friend George. Edmund confides the feelings he has for Kathrine, and during a gathering of male friends, George reveals it to them. Edmund complains, “...I’ve invited you merely for emotional support and, apparently, to spill to one and all my deepest secrets…” But they have a serious problem to resolve: Lady Edith has her sights set on Edmund and seems determined to place herself in a position that will force him to propose, the last thing he wants to do. He schemes to find a replacement suitor for her, and muses about the kind of man she’d want.
“She obviously likes a man older than herself, kind and gentle, yet intelligent...”
“I’m not quite sure,” George said,” but I think you just complimented yourself three times over.”
“Can’t be helped sometimes, Georgie.”

This was a beautiful description of Edmund after making love to Katherine. “His mind seemed broken, blank, and incandescently happy.”

Katherine desperately wants to be free from taking care of her sister, Chrissy (Christiana). Edmund wants to help her to do that, even if it means she will leave him. That would devastate him, but he loves her enough to want her to be happy. She’s writing a book and hopes this will be her ticket to freedom.
“This” —her arms tightened around the folio— “this could be it.” Her gaze wandered over an ocean of dreams he wanted to cross with her. At the very least, he’d build her a boat, paint it the same color as the sea and make it tight and safe.
“This could win me my independence, my future,” she continued.
And he stood stranded on the shore, watching her shrink in her bobbing blue boat, her stormy myriad-colored hair streaming behind her.
Edmund, envisioning Katherine leaving him, is broken-hearted but silent, because he wants her to follow her dreams.

This part made me giggle out loud. What a visual! Edmund finds out that Katherine has gone to Jane and George’s home and is impatient to be with her again.

He…ran all the way to George’s townhome.
He arrived sweaty and windswept and entirely out of breath, falling through the door and laying in a puddle on the foyer floor.
The butler looked down at him, no concern showing on any lines of his face. “Lord Escher. Shall I alert the earl to your presence?”

And this also made me chuckle. Katherine finally stands up to one of the villains of the story. “‘We will not invite you to the wedding,’ Edmund said, waving exuberantly beside her.”

And finally, there’s this line in the epilogue which is everything to me. They’ve put the children to bed and lay upon their own. Edmund asks Katherine, “So, shall we unmoor ourselves from the earth a bit and revel in the clouds?”

"Set in 1817
Edmund Crenshaw, Viscount Escher had found the love of his life but his father asking her sister to marry him ruined his own hopes of marriage. He's a fun loving, quick to laugh, dedicated man, with a boyish charm but is committed to being a bachelor if he can't convince Katherine to marry him.

Katherine Brighton is a widow who has been taking care of her younger sister ever since their parents' deaths. She's thirty-four and ready to live her own life, and write stories to support herself. But she finds herself still taking care of her sister even ever her sister is married.

Katherine has spoiled and coddled her sister so much that she has become dependent upon her for everything. She gave up the love of her life to be free of her sister but still hasn't broken the chains. A wine-soaked night weakens her resolve to stay away and has given Edmund hope again.

Their story is a bit of a fanciful lark. It's been two years since she turned down his proposal but after a heated evening Edmund's patience shows signs of hope and he's going to run with it to spend the rest of his life with Katherine. Edmund is the fanciful dreamer to Katherine's serious martyrdom and I wasn't always a fan of either of them. These characters are a bit over the top at times in their own unique way but their story is sweet, with a great epilogue.

I had a hard time warming up to this story. Maybe because so much happened off the page? Edmund was already set to propose to Katherine at the start of the book, but on the same day, his father beat him by proposing to Katherine's younger sister. Now, Katherine refused him because she didn't want to live in the same house as her sister. They all had to live together for some reason having to do with his sister. She also was tired of being at the beck and call of her sister. (A lot of sister drama here). O.K. so why did it then skip ahead two years and she was doing exactly that? Living in the same house as Edmund and being her sister's drudge? They had a sexual encounter on Christmas that is only mentioned here with no details. I've read the other books and have no memory of any of this. I'm not feeling any love or attraction here. Two years in the same house quickly skipped over, and nothing...? I received an ARC of this title by the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.

Don't You Dare my Dear is the fourth in the series of The Debutante Dares and it will hold your attention as you enjoy the journey with Katherine and Edmund until the very end. After waiting two years for Katherine to admit her love for him, Edmund decides to win Katherine any way he can. Edmund will cause you to laugh out loud with Katherine the practical one that will keep Edmund grounded.

I always enjoy how well the author brings in the other characters from the earlier series, it's like revisiting old friends that you haven't seen for a while. Charlie Lane has filled this passionate romance with characters that come off the pages and pull you into their tale, with characters you will love to hate, friends that will bring hilarity to situations, witty banter and fun plot that will leave you looking forward to Lady Edith's story.

I enjoyed this historical romance story with all of the characters. The two main characters were Mrs. Katherine Brighton and Edmund Crenshaw, Viscount Escher.

Mrs. Katherine Brighton wants to escape her younger sister. She wants her independence. She likes to write books but there no time. Because her sister needs her.

Edmund Crenshaw, Viscount Escher proposal marriage to Mrs. Katherine Brighton. But she decides to not take the offer. Years later he still a bachelor but there was a young lady that he try to court but he decided to not marry her because he still loved the first woman that he proposed to.

This was a fun story to read. It has action, secrets and drama throughout. It had a few laughs and giggles throughout to.

I received a complimentary copy via Booksprout and Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased opinions.

Edmund and Katherine were due to wed but circumstances meant they couldn’t so they tried to keep away from each other. Katherine went back to writing books and Edmund held out until Katherine agreed to marry him again. Things ended well of course. - I quite enjoyed this but I wasn’t keen on the way it was written. I very nearly gave up. Some of the story involving the would-be candidates for Lady Edith’s hand was silly and really not needed. Padding the book out, perhaps? I also felt exasperated at the way Katherine was with her sister Chrissy. Just tell her NO, you’re a grown woman! Again, all of that just padded the story out but didn’t really add anything. Not sure I shall read any more from this author.

An older sister who sacrificed her future to help her younger sister. Katherine loves her dilly sister and is prepare to help her at all costs. Seeing her beloved every day makes her decide to do all she can to break away from a helpless situation where nothing will change. To have the life she feels she deserves, she writes a book to try and uplift her situation. Love triumphs over trials and tribulations, resulting in a happy ever after.

Love is patient

This was a lighthearted read and very enjoyable. When I first started the book, I wasn't sure if I would like it, but it gained steam pretty quick, and I was hooked. It does have quite a few surprises, and sometimes you want the heroine to stand up to her sister, but at the same time, she felt responsible for her since she had taken care of her for tears since their parents died. Don't miss this one, it has depth but also humor to make it fun.
