Self-exiled to the Outside, Flynn Scot is oath-bound to a life of strict penance.
Cursed with a vicious temper and haunted by the blood-stained debauchery of his past, Flynn’s sworn off women, whiskey, and violence, and doesn’t give a damn about whispers of the coming war. He sure as hell isn’t in the mood to make good on a debt when it’s called in, especially when playing white knight outs him as a Talent, and the damsel in distress as his soulmate.
On the run from her future as a broodmare for the Source, escaped Talent Kara Jester is no distressed damsel.
And the last thing she wants is to be trapped in a blizzard with a surly—and frustratingly captivating—thug. Without the suppression meds holding her libido in check, her biology’s primed to procreate, and Flynn’s growled assurances that he won’t touch her doesn’t match the hunger in his eyes.
It doesn’t align with what fate has in store for them, either.
With elite troops hot on their heels and the border set to close, it’s a race to the North, away from Kara’s horrific future and towards the dark past Flynn wants to keep buried. Clinging to the shreds of his oath, he’s forced to choose between protecting the woman he’s afraid to love and letting out the animal he swore he’d never be again. Either may destroy him, if Kara’s secrets don’t get them killed first.

My Rating: 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Series Status: I need book 2 like I need oxygen. Inject this series into my fucking bloodstream.
We Have: ✅ MF Romance ✅ Insta-Lust to Insta-Love ✅ Fated Mates / Soulmate Pull ✅ Sci-Fi x Dystopian x Paranormal Mayhem ✅ Political Schemes, Secrets & Sabotage ✅ Morally Gray MMC Built Like a Trauma Response ✅ Villains Who Fucking VILLAIN ✅ Smut That Smuts Without Stealing the Plot ✅ Multi-POV (Not Just the Main Couple) ✅ A Heroine Who Will Beat Your Ass and Your Enemies
I did not expect this book to swallow me whole like this. I cracked it open thinking “fun mutant soulmate smut” and ended up spiraling through government conspiracies, violent fate, genetic manipulation, and heat-induced bonding that straight-up rewired my brain.
The worldbuilding in this book isn’t just background noise—it’s deliberate, layered, and sharp as hell. This is immersive chaos with consequences. History, politics, deep-rooted systems of control and power—nothing here is surface-level. Every page builds tension. Every secret escalates. The characters are grown-ass adults with trauma, pain, power, and purpose. No melodramatic spirals. No teenage tantrums. Just broken, hardened people clawing their way through a system designed to destroy them.
This book is built for readers who want to think and spiral in equal measure. There’s rebellion, genetic engineering, elite corruption, and villains who don’t monologue for ego—they plot for blood. It’s psychological. Political. Vicious. And thanks to the multi-POV storytelling, the reader sees every angle—each power play, betrayal, and manipulation sliding into place behind the scenes. It’s immersive as fuck.
The breadcrumbing is masterfully done. Twisted backstories, biological curveballs, and subtle hints drop in a slow-burn that rewards your attention without ever spoon-feeding shit. These reveals don’t just land—they detonate. The story gives just enough to keep your brain chasing every thread, and when they finally snap into place, it’s chaos.
Kara is a fucking force. She lets people look at her and think she’s breakable—then beats the shit out of them just to make a point. There’s a scene where a cocky bastard challenges her—the same bastard who leveled another character like it was nothing—and Kara doesn’t just defeat him. She plays with him. Toys with his ego. Loosens up her muscles, lets off steam, and then drops him like a goddamn warm-up drill. That wasn’t strategy. That was release. She isn’t a pawn. She isn’t a placeholder. She is the motherfucking weapon. Flynn doesn’t just respect her—he worships her for it.
Flynn is the blueprint. A walking trauma response in exile. Bitter. Broken. Bound by oath and rage. He’s sworn off women, whiskey, and violence—and then fate throws all three at him in the form of a bonded mate he’s been dreaming about since childhood. And he fucking claims her. No hesitation. No retreat. He is savage when he needs to be, soft when she needs it most, and never once tries to dim her light. That’s what makes him lethal. That’s what makes him hers.
This book doesn’t just pull the reader in—it grabs by the throat and demands full goddamn attention. Heavy. Sharp. Intoxicating. Once the pieces start clicking together, it’s game over. Total obsession activated. The worldbuilding is on the level of those massively popular fantasy sagas—complex systems, deep lore, hidden alliances—but stripped of the childish fluff. No wide-eyed naïveté. No YA bullshit masquerading as adult. This is full-grown, fuck-you-up plotting with psychological thriller precision. Twists and secrets hit like weapons. It’s built for the girlies who want to be mindfucked and railed—preferably at the same time.
If you've read Breeder, then you have already had the pleasure of meeting Kara. Breaker essentially starts where we left off, and Kara is on the run after being smuggled out of The Source. The people tasked with helping her escape have proven themselves just as scummy, and she has made the rash decision to flee into the snowstorm.
In Breeder, we also meet Flynn, a man with a temper and a questionable past. He has been tasked with finding our damsel and bringing her to the north. Simple enough, right? If only.
There's a lot going on behind the scenes, and these two meeting might not be as random as we are led to believe. Is it destiny? Is it love at first site? Or has something or someone been pulling their strings?
Their attitudes toward one another are initially cold, but things heat up pretty quickly, and once they do....my God, it's hot and it's heavy!
There's a huge amount of world building and establishing of the characters and their backgrounds, but I won't get into that. Some of the things revealed throughout the story blew my mind, and I don't want to spoil anything.
One of my absolute favorite things that Nevermore does is start the chapters with definitions and excerpts from "documents" that really help you understand what you're reading but also further develop the world and characters.
I honestly really fell in love with these characters, and I am eager to follow their story.
I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review
After reading Breeder, the prequel of this series, I did get a slightly better insight into the world of Talents and background story of our female main character, Kara. The world-building here was great and so were most of the characters and different species of paranormal creatures. It was also eye-opening to see what it was like for Kara to bond with her fated mate, Flynn. The two had unstoppable chemistry and their romance was both spicy and smutty. However, I wasn't sure if it was the multiple POVs or the general way of storytelling style, I found it difficult to emotionally connected with any of the characters, nor could I fully engage with the plot design. Perhaps with the series continuing, I would get more information and hopefully, more feelings for these characters and the world they lived in. For now, Breaker was a solid three-star read for me, but I had high hopes that the next book would be a better one!
***Thanks to InkSlinger PR and the author for kindly providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.***
A government taking people with talent and breeding them into tasks. A form of abuse and slavery. A woman with a talent's only job is to be a broodmare for the establishment. Kara Jester managed to escape her probable grape by her half brother and flees the Source. Found and saved by Flynn, a hot mess, from freezing to death in the snow. 🔥
I enjoyed the story, it did take me awhile to finish though. It was spicy, it was action-packed when the action actually happened. Alot of traveling and a few grammatical errors. Flynn is the type of morally gray hero that would literally burn the world for Kara. I thought the romance between them was sweet, and turned Flynn into such a cinnamon role for her. I can say that I didn't really have much of a connection to any of the other characters or much cared about anything other than how disgusting I think the Source is. There wasn't much character change and growth perse, just the romance between the two deepening. Their outwards personality didn't really change as the story progressed, but even so.. I look forward to continuing the series some day.
Let me just say that sci-fi is not a genre that I gravitate to, so I can’t even begin to explain how I ended up reading this book. Ok, I’m lying, I picked it up because it said “spicy” and boy, am I glad I did. I was not expecting the thrilling ride that was Breaker. AK Nevermore created a world full of political intrigue and “supernatural” characters that had me on the edge of my seat. The story follows Flynn Scot and Kara Jester, both from different worlds but in the same boat of fleeing from the life they grew up in. They embark on a journey that leads them to find a deep connection that neither was prepared for.
There was a lot of world building and terminology, but AK did a great job of presenting it, and I did not feel lost as I gained insight into this world and the characters and their backgrounds.
From that first meeting between Kara and Flynn, the chemistry was off the charts. I ATE. IT. UP. I was giddy as they fought against that pull that they both pretended wasn’t there. Flynn and Kara were full of surprises, and there seemed to be something new at every turn. Just when I thought I knew them, AK went and threw in another cookie crumb. Their journey to their final destination was ripe full of drama and obstacles, and it was a treat seeing that Kara was no damsel in distress and could fight just as savagely as Flynn.
Breaker was a thrilling and action-packed read for anyone who loves dystopian and/or sci-fi romances with a dark twist. AK Nevermore delivered a story with a great balance of action and emotional depth. It’s a story of not only fighting against oppression but also the power that comes from a deep-seated connection.
Breaker" by AK Nevermore is a thrilling ride that kept me on the edge of my seat! Having previously met Kara in "Breeder," I was already a fan, but this story truly deepened my appreciation for her character. The chemistry between the main characters, Flynn and Kara, is electric, and their contrasting personalities create a dynamic that is both entertaining and engaging.
The world-building in this alternate Earth adds a compelling backdrop to their journey. Flynn's struggle with his past contrasts beautifully with Kara’s fierce determination to escape her previous fate which we found out in book .5. Their time together is not just filled with action but also a spicy tension that makes every moment count.
I loved how the story balances thrilling action sequences with emotional depth, exploring themes of love, redemption, and the fight against oppression. The pacing was perfect, leading to an exhilarating climax that left me eager for more.
I definitely suggest this book for fans of dystopian romance, as well as sci fi lovers, and dark romance readers.
I read this mixed on my Kindle, on my ku app, and on my paperback copy because I literally could not put this down. The start was a little slow, mixed with all the different POVS it did get confusing until I was able to figure out the writing style, but LORDT did it suck me in. Which is about par for the course with fantasy/dystopian si-fi.
Kara and Flynn 😍 their banter and insta-lust is to die for. The plot twists? Superb. All the different side characters with their different personalities? I ate it all up. There's still some questions I have that will definitely be resolved in book two, like WHY IS FLYNN STILL SO MYSTERIOUS? I'm going to read the two prequels before I start book 2. I'm a suckerrr for a good backstory on MC's.
Overall, amazing book. I'm really happy I stumbled on a post A.K had made on a book group. I've already started reccing it to friends to read.
First I want to say this is not the typical book I read and it’s a bit outside the normal genre for me but I wanted to expand my horizons and I’m SO glad I did.
Breeder is the prequel to this book and while it’s not a MUST read it’s definitely a SHOULD read prior to Breaker to get a better understanding. With that being said, this book is complex, with incredible world building, intense characters, and a well written plot. Because this was outside the norm for me, it was a bit difficult for me to get started with BUT that’s not on the author, that’s on ME.
Once I really got into this book, there was no putting it down and while it didn’t end on a cliffhanger per se, there are some unresolved issues that make me super excited for book 2! There is action, suspense, spice, alternate abilities, and of course the dystopian earth.
This book has left me wanting so much more and I’m so excited that book 2 is right around the corner.
This has to be one of the best Beauty and Beast retellings I have encountered. The dystopian setting brings you to an otherworldly sensation while pulling you into that Umbrella company sense with the Source and Corporation.
You have the dead lands and then you have this Northern society that has a Jane Austin sort of feel from their deeply religious roots to their societal structure. All the while the entire world building is like the three dimensional game of chess.
It is written in third person - which I loved but so used to first person it took a bit to originate to that. But with so many key plays on the board it made sense. I love that we get everyone’s perspective and not just the main characters.
The spice is molten in this book. But if you are sensitive to the primal nature of some kinks then don’t read. Also there are some triggering subjects mentioned so read triggers.
I was pulled through so many emotions and that is rare. I am absolutely feral for book two.
Talk about a book that keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat. The characters were well written and descriptive to their views/feelings. Right when I thought I had Kara and Flynn figured out another twist comes out. There are definitely hot sex scenes with some dark rough actions. Still hot though! There are some descriptive violent scenes. So if you are the type that is uncomfortable with it you may want to skip ahead. I don’t mind some violence but not extremely violent that it makes me uncomfortable. There is also a lot of terms and groups of people. It can be alittle overwhelming but gives enough details that you understand it. I recommend this book if you liked divergent and hunger games. It is right up your alley.
WOW 5/5 stars! I literally could NOT put it down!!! It’s so hard for me not to give spoilers cause I loved it so much LOL! I carried this book everywhere with me. (literally) Kept reading every chance I got. This is amazing. The dystopian sci fi is just chefs kiss! The world building is absolutely next level. I literally felt like I was feeling and experiencing everything the characters were. Like it’s sucked me into a different place and that is the biggest joy reading gives me! The romance is so good! The main characters are so well written and not predictable. Even the side characters! The paths they take the choices they make. I cannot wait to read the next one! Please sign me up! -Kerin
This was an action driven story. I really enjoyed that there was not one single moment where things were not interesting. We come to learn about an alternate earth where those with special abilities are being hunted. There’s a mysterious corporate involved that keeps Talents captive. One such Talent Kara goes on the run when she meets Flynn who is trying to repay a debt. At first Flynn believes that it’ll be easy but of course things become complicated and feelings get in the way.
This was definitely a top 10 read of 2024! I’m so glad I got to be apart of this authors team and found this awesome read!!! It wasn’t necessarily the genre I read but it was absolutely amazing!! I loved the characters, the plot and how much detail the author gave that helped me visualize this story! The prequels definitely helped understand the characters and where the story was going! Our mmc struggles to stay way from being something he doesn’t want to be, but he’s more than tested with our fmc! She’s on the run and he’s a bad boy but they might just find something in each other.
This book is a very sophisticated book! I absolutely loved it and the spice level is very very high! The chemistry is amazing between the two main characters. This book has Dualpointofviews meaning mutiple characters views! So buckle up and prepare for a lot of info in the beginning and then is totally picks up and it’s totally worth it! I don’t know why amazon keeps taken my review Down 🙄. I absolutely loved this book :)
I loved the world building and plot in this book. Kara is just this likeable woman who you wouldn’t mess with on a bad day but you’re rooting for her to overcome her circumstances. Flynn has a dark past he is trying to get a second chance from that you are hoping he can overcome. Their action for survival mingled in with the secrets had me turning the pages and I even audibly gasped at a moment in the book where I had to reread it multiple times and set the book down completely freaked out at the turn of events! This dystopian sci-fi series will have your head spinning in enjoyment!
I started this book at 3am and finished it by 8am…it held me in a state of “what if and where tf am I going now?!” I was shocked at every turn. This author does amazing character and world building and keeps you engaged with each character making you feel as if you were there with them. This is my first book by AK and I’m so glad I loved it as much as I did!
I don’t normally read sci-fi. It’s normally always anything dark or fantasy so I figured I’d give this book a try. It was so good!! Now I need more of Flynn and Kara!! I love how she set up each chapter to explain the different things that she says in the book like what a breaker is or binder etc. I can not wait for the second book 🥰
Actually a 4.5 star book. This book is such a blend of spicy, sci-fi, and dystopian that you get drawn in from chapter one to the end. Kara and Flynn are soul mates in the truest sense of the word. From a society that sees them both flawed they overcome and find each other. I can't wait for book two to be available.
AK's post-apocalyptic love story is a gripping tale of survival, where talents can be both a blessing or a curse. It features a richly detailed world, complex characters, and a healthy dose of spice. Great dystopian read!
Author A.K Nevermore outdid herself with this amazing sci-fi/ dystopian read. Kara and Flynns development throughout the book had me falling in love. The world building was phenomenal! I absolutely cannot wait to read binder now and continue the story of Kara and Flynn.
This was sooooo good I haven’t read a sci-fi book in a minute and WOW- im glad i held out for this! Everything was perfectly balanced and i can not wait to read the next books in the series
The dystopian world building is well done, and the genetic breeding program storyline is actually pretty interesting, but the romance is weird and off-putting. Honestly if this was written as a straight novel and most of the erotic scenes were removed it would be pretty good.
I recently read Breeder, the prequel to Breaker, and it provided valuable context for the beginning of the main story for Breaker.
Breaker presents a compelling blend of dystopian elements, romance, and an alternate Earth setting. The protagonist, Kara, finds herself on the run from "the source" and seeks refuge in a snowstorm, only to be stranded with Flynn—a brooding and secretive man with a mysterious past. Flynn, reluctant to reveal his talents and wary of relationships, is forced into close quarters with Kara, who, lacking her usual medication, faces heightened urges. Their chemistry is intense, and their connection as soulmates adds an intriguing layer to their interactions.
Breaker is an engaging read with a mix of romance, adventure, and steam, offering a captivating story that left a strong impression. It’s a five-star experience for me, and I highly recommend diving into this series—it’s well worth it!
I was really disappointed to give up on this, as it ticked a lot of boxes for me and was really compelling. Unfortunately the story was really starting to frustrate me, with how many secrets the main characters kept from each other, and I could see how this was going to be a major plot point in the next book.
The writing was at times excellent, but the pacing dragged at a few points, and there were moments that felt repetitive. I also struggled to even understand what was happening at times - it looks like there was a prequel that perhaps I needed to read? But I didn't see any mention of it at the start of the book.
Lastly, I struggled a bit with the "romance" - in that there didn't actually seem to be much of it. But I'm not much of a fan of insta-love.
What a world to dive into…AK doesn’t disappoint in this love story in a post apocalyptic world where having any talent can mean death and destruction or your salvation. It’s a world that you can immerse yourself into and leaves you needing more.
