I'm giving up. No need to read further when the author won't allow me to feel. Even scenes which are supposed to be highly emotional leave me cold. Quite often it's because he's more into telling than showing and those time he allows me to empathize, he adds a distraction right after the emotional scene and I'm lost again. Do I have to add that I'm still not sure about Declan's and Aydan's romance? Why the heck does Declan still have to start with remembering how much he disliked Ayden before he fell in love although the author likes me to believe that he's consumed with longing now that they had to split up because he had to go to the well of magic all on his own. The best is Orla, the snarky owl, but that's not enough to follow this series.

Book 2 in Crowns & Quills Series by Casey Morales.

I strongly urge that you first read Book 1 in this fabulous series so you get to know as many of the important characters in this Fantasy World of Crown and Quills. I’m only a recent inductee to this world but now I’m addicted. Luckily Casey Morales has given a list at the start of these books, listing the names, titles and relationship to this story.

Here in Book 2 we join MC Ranger Declan Rea who has been assigned a super important task by his stepfather, Mage Atikus, to seek the Keeper of the Well. Declan has to say goodbye to his newly found love also a Ranger, MC Ayden Byrne, the son of Lord Byrne. All Declan has to help him on his journey is a tiny map with markings showing the route to important places and people he needs to meet before he reaches the Well. His final destination is on an Island in the middle of the Ocean far, far away. He is sworn not to share anything about this journey or destination, especially not with Ayden, for his own safety.

This whole world is full of magic and mystery and Gifted people who have special talents, they can be Healers, Illusionists, Telepathic specialists, Mindreaders and Enchanters. Declan has always been jealous of his older brother Keelan who is the Chief Investigator in the Constabulary because he is one of the Gifted. Declan and others who are not Gifted are regarded as Mute. This among other stuff has caused a rift between them.

There has been some shenanigans going on in Melucia, which is usually a peaceful place, but now several people have been kidnapped and Keelan has been set to find out what is going on. When word is received that the same things is happening in the Kingdom and the Princess Jess, the female heir to the Throne is missing, plus, her mother the Queen has disappeared without a word. With rumours flying about that Melucia is behind the missing royal persons, a State of War is declared. There is also a strange group called The Children, who dress like monks but wear masks of different animals. All of these events has been foreseen by the centuries old, Mage Atikus, and he has deliberately chosen Ranger Declan Rea, his ‘ungifted’ 20 year stepson, as the person who will be the Saviour of all the world.

Here we will see what Declan discovers and learns about the Gifted, about who he is and why he has been chosen. He will meet the most amazing people or are they people. Everything he knew about himself is tossed aside as the Keeper trains him to become someone with GIFTS he never knew he possessed. Declan also meets up with an Owl named Orlaith, who has amazing powers, she can read his mind, communicate with him, flirts with him, and will be his most ardent supporter in the task ahead of him.
Time measurement with The Keeper passes much more quickly than in Melucia. In fact Declan’S training has taken a few years, whereas back in Melucia, he has only been gone a few weeks. Ayden becomes more worried and starts to lose confidence in his new relationship when he hears nothing from Declan.

Now having been fully trained in the use of his many GIFTS by The Keeper of the Well, not just one, like most others, he starts out on his return journey to home and Ayden.
<><><><><><><><>
So here I am waiting to see Declan return to his beloved Ayden and author Casey Morales leaves me with another cliffhanger. Mean Meany Man, we’ve got to wait until he launches Book 3 In a few months time. In the meantime he has launched a book in the same series but based further back in time to an old Queen who maybe the cause of the current upheaval in the Kingdom.

However I forgive the author because he has done such an unbelievable, magnificent job in the series so far, how he managed to create all the diverse characters, how he kept track of the ‘who is who’, what were their talents, plus the plotting of each of their stories and connections. Each Chapter featured a different POV from several of the main players in the story and it was fantastic skill to keep it all together and easy for us to follow without losing the plot. It kept me page turning right to the end to see what magic was going to happen on the next one.

This Fantasy World tale in Crown and Quills Series will grab you and pull you right into the thick of the plot and keep you interested in the story and wanting to know if Ranger Declan Rea and Ranger Ayden Byrne will survive the coming war get their HEA.

Please don’t keep us waiting to long author Casey Morales.

A great fantasy story

However, once more marred by clumsy editing errors. Only a few, but they are glaringly obvious.
It is amusing how the 'heat' elements have to be force-fed into the narrative, but that is done very well.
The story has a ton of heart, a good amount of easy humour & excellent character development. Some of the angst is annoying, but considering the personalities, it's more often than not appropriate.
I look forward to continuing the journey with this well wrought & expansive cast of characters.

This book felt a bit like filler. It started strong, with investigations continuing, the betrayal of the princess, the plotting of the queen. Relationships were developing, plot thickening. But then Declan went on his mission and it became a 'training montage', interspersed with occasional investigative snippets and a background of war.

The whole, oh he had magic all along, he's the most powerful, he's destined for greatness kind of messed up his character development in my opinion... He was just getting over himself and his constant jealousy towards his brother and magic users in general, he was comforted and growing closer to his partner through shared struggle but also mutual acceptance they didn't need magic to be worth something. Now he has magic, he's becoming more arrogant and it's excused as a 'charm' magic inherent to him? It's somewhat annoying, I found myself disillusioned with him as a character... Plus, his training was barely shown, it was more focused on him bonding with his mother, who he will forget on leaving, and on cheesy humour between them and his magic owl companion.

Keelan's investigation was also slow moving, in plot and substance. They spent most of their journey more worried about the army than their mission. He would go for chapters without mentioning Tiana, then suddenly remembering he had a personal connection to the whole situation? It felt inconsistent. Then the conclusion of the whole mission was so anticlimactic. A seemingly helpless ending can be a great cliffhanger, but here it made the entire first book, the character developments, investigations and side stories entirely redundant...

I feel that the first and second book could have merged, coming to the same conclusion, with less filler and separate plotlines, for a war focused middle book and a final battle in a third. Instead, there's too many POVS, too many side stories and too little substance...

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Four stars

An intense prologue set a millennium in the past sets the stage for Casey Morales’s epic adventure set in an imaginary world. The four Archer novels are focused on the lives of orphaned brothers—Keelan Rea and his little brother Declan.

But that brief description hardly describes it. Declan is in fact the cover figure for the four Archer books—a young Forest Ranger in Melucia with untamed blond hair. It is his destiny that changes the course of history for his country and its neighbor, the Kingdom of Spires. But his big (age-wise and size-wise) brother Keelan, who is a celebrated lieutenant in the national constabulary (i.e. a detective, aided by his magical gift of truth-seeing), is of almost equal importance.

And that’s just the tip of the cast-of-characters iceberg. In “An Archer’s Awakening” we learn that Keelan and Declan were raised by the mages in Saltstone, capital of the Melucian Empire (a commercial empire with no monarch but a highly developed merchant class). In particular, Atikus Dan is a 1000-year-old mage who they see as their father. He is important. Then there’s Ayden Byrne, red-headed son of a merchant nobleman, who joins Declan’s class in the Rangers’ academy. Theirs is a classic hate-at-first sight romance that will thread its way throughout the four volumes of the series.

As for the Kingdom (as it is called), the crucial figures are Crown Princess Jessia Vester, a headstrong teenager and heir apparent. Her father Alfred and mother Isabel struggle with their daughter, who has the odd belief that she should, as heir, have some control over her life choices. Then there’s Danai Thorn, a sort of grand vizier (not that they use that term here), who is at least as old as Atikus Dani. He is pulling 1000-year-old strings unbeknownst to anyone in the royal family. This book is where we get to know more about the main characters and get a sense (aided by very useful maps) of the story’s setting.

You see, the Kingdom of Spires and Melucia have been peaceful trading partners for 1000 years. That is about to change as book 2, “An Archer’s Destiny” kicks off. Storm clouds are gathering on the horizon as Thorn’s long con—using Queen Isabel as his unwitting accomplice—begins to unfold. At the same moment, Declan Rea, who is beginning his pas-de-deux with Ayden Byrne, discovers something about himself that turns his world upside down. Declan has always been conscious that, in this nation of magical people, he is one of the minority who have been given no gift (i.e. no magic). He takes comfort that the aristocratic Ayden is, like him, ungifted.

By book 3, “An Archer’s Reckoning,” things get really ugly. Declan takes his place at the center of the narrative, but so does Queen Isabel, still unaware that she is being used as a pawn in a violent and deadly game. I note here that all of this sort of fiction derives, ultimately, from “The Lord of the Rings,” and by extrapolation from “Star Wars.” This is “The Empire Strikes Back,” if you will. This is the dark before the dawn. Princess Jessia ends up in the protection of Keelan Rea and Atikus Dani, the mage who raised him. I found this book distressing to read, and it left me almost desperate for something positive. Of course, that pretty much guaranteed that I’d start reading book 4 immediately.

In book 4, “An Archer’s Redemption,” as the title suggests, the tide begins to turn. There is more violence, and some shocking surprises, but the power of the good magic, with Declan at the center of things, begins to offer us some hopeful light.

Casey Morales is no J.R.R. Tolkien; but he is nonetheless a strong, compelling writer, who knows how to stir action into a heart-stopping wave. He does not have the kind of beautiful language that would have pushed the book to five stars, and he also resorts to the genre’s requirement for on-page sex, which I found to be a distraction rather than a bonus. I am rooting for Ayden and Declan, truly; but I would have been happy to let their physical relationship blossom in my imagination.

All in all, a powerful, emotional, and worthwhile series. There are two other prequel type volumes, but these four are the essential pieces in visiting this fantasy world. I read them all at once. It was a good choice.

Epic! The story is absolutely captivating. It's one twist after another.
The writing is meticulous, punctuated by alternating points of view and narrator positioning, and we're totally immersed in the story.
We essentially follow Declan and Keelan, the two brothers, as their stories progress.
I enjoyed watching Declan discover himself in this new book, as his world is shaken up and he has to face a new reality.
At the same time, Keelan continues his investigation and gradually unravels the threads of truth.
The end of the book is incredible and leaves you wanting more... To have the sequel!
I can't wait to see Declan and Keelan reunite as the worst threatens the world. I'm a little worried about the reunion with Ayden, when Declan won't be the same, but I'm still curious to see how it all turns out.
I can't wait to read the rest of this story!

----

Epique !

First thing to say, I loved this book!
To dive fully into this world I would recommend reading the first book, An Archer’s Awakening, in the series first because An Archer's Destiny begins with the next heartbeat right after Declan accepts his mission.
In this volume, Declan learns a lot about himself, his past and the world he lives in in a wonderfully sensitive, humorous and exciting way. Casey Morales has further developed the exciting mystical world of the Kingdom and Melucia. He once again takes us on a journey characterized by unexpected dangers, new alliances, loss, pain, love, grief and completely surprising twists and turns.

I was captivated from the first page by the vivid characters, Casey's wonderfully fluid, empathetic and gripping writing style. I laughed a lot, shared in the excitement, cursed, was completely shocked by some of the twists and turns and by the end my heart was bleeding for some of the characters. The different storylines are full of suspense in themselves. I couldn't put the book down to read how they find each other. The tension at the end is almost unbearable. I have never cursed so much that the sequel is not yet available. ❤️
With the first two novels in this series Casey Morales has proven, in my opinion, that he is an outstanding, versatile author who is also at home in the fantasy genre.
I give it an unconditional reading recommendation!

An Archer’s Destiny is a fantastic work of both fantasy and romance.

Diabolical underground forces in the kingdom of Spires seek to disrupt the solitude and sovereignity of neighboring Melucia. Melucian ranger cadet Declan Rea embarks on a dangerous secret mission to gather information and ask for magical aid from Utu Rea, as the Kingdom of Spires has been duped into invading Melucia over the kidnapping of the Kingdom’s princess, Jessia Vester.

The plot of this novel is exceptionally thought-provoking and absorbing, and the character building and development are magnificent! I really had trouble putting this book down… I couldn’t wait to see what happened next! What I found especially endearing in this book was how the reader is able to experience each character’s thoughts and actions through the character’s own eyes – and this is important as each of the main character’s personal, professional and intimate feelings was diametrically independent of the others’. I felt that the WAY this book is written is, in itself, a true testament to the author’s rich imagination and exceptional storytelling ability.

I really enjoyed this fantasy-romance!! Very intriguing and entertaining! 5 stars!!

For the best experience, please read An Archer's Awakening, the first in this series, before you read this book.

Welcome to a magical adventure quest! You will learn more about magic than Harry Potter. You will find joy and love on a tropical island, which our hero, Declan, reaches through a magic portal. He gets help from animals and people he never expected to meet. Meanwhile, he discovers that he is in love with Ayden just before he has to leave on his very secret mission. Their relationship is pure magic at times. Casey Morales can make any story fun and frightening. A terrible villain is brewing a scheme to take over the world. Several storylines are going on simultaneously, and Casey manages to make them all hold up and work together to bring us a great experience. The main character is in love with a man, but their relationship is not the focus of the story, at least not yet. There are two more books to go, as well as two prequels. Welcome to romantasy world!

I had the honor of being a beta reader for this book, but I read it again before reviewing it and found it even more compelling when reading just for fun.

I received this ARC for free via Booksirens and happily left this review.

An Archer’s Destiny is the second book in the Of Crowns & Quills series. We pick up where we left off in the first book with Declan, Keelan and Ayden all taking off on their separate missions to help bring peace back to the nation. Nothing is as it seems and anything can happen. As any intertwined stories play out the reader gets a great picture of what is goin on in the nation and start to see what is coming next. In order to fight the dark forces facing then everyone must do all that they can to help.

I enjoyed the first book and was ready to see where this one would pick up. This world was well developed in the first book but as we get into this book it gets even better. I am a fan of the main two character, Keelan and Declan, and really enjoyed following along with Declan’s story in this book. This series is easy to get pulled into even though fantasy is not my first go to genre. I did find that at times I would get confused with the number of characters and points of view these chapters were told in, but the beginning of the book did a good job of giving a glossary of characters that helped. Overall I enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing what comes next in this series. If you are looking for a fun and intriguing fantasy series give this one a try.

The setting in this series is very intricate and well crafted. I also love the charm in the author’s writing, it gives the characters such vivid personalities. In book one, there’s just the beginnings of a connection between Declan and Ayden, so I was looking forward to seeing if they would find a way to grow closer. I’d say I’m not an avid reader of fantasy, but the author has created a very interesting landscape and I loved the details around how magic works in this world. This second book very much has the feeling of a grand quest. Declan is seeking to learn more about his newly discovered magic and Keelan is on a mission to find Tatiana, the healer. The quest was okay, but I was a bit bummed it forced Ayden and Declan apart, as they are becoming quite good together. For me, the quest and lots of other characters were a bit in the way, but I’m probably in the minority on that. There are various plot lines to follow and the author skillfully is able to keep multiple stories moving forward. I’m interested to see what happens when Declan and Ayden meet up again.

Book 2 of Crown and Quills is a masterpiece of writing, of storytelling. every word, line, sentence, paragraph, and chapter keeps the reader captivated. declan the magical mute, journeys to a strange island to didcor his destiny with many surprises along the journey and on the island. his newly discovered love, his relationship with his brother and adopted family are tested, and he is tested. back on land, there are so many turns and twists that, as a reader, you will be dizzy at times. times laughing, times weeping, time frustrated, times eager for the next chapter in a person's journey. I love the way it jumps from one main character to another each chapter. it is not necessarily an easy read as it shows that at times of war, emerging evil, there are casualties, there are times when evil wins over good but always with the sense that evil will not win in the end. there are many echoes of todays world of the choices that we make, be it Ukraine, Gazza, supporting right-wing ideologies vebit in france, USA or elsewhere., will good emerge..the remaining books will tell the story and as a reader you will be spell bound (pardon the pun) . readers enjoy as I have.

THE THRILLING SAGA CONTINUES!💕

The second book of the series is better than the first book by far!

Lots of action, intrigue, mystery surrounding a cult and a blossoming romance, what more could you expect from such an amazing author!

Declan continues on his journey to find The Keeper and on the way he picks up an unusual companion, and this is where we find out more about his awakening gift and what it all entails!

Ayden and Declan’s paths separate for his impending secret journey but before that happens things develop on a more intimate level…

Keelan and Atikus is still searching for the kidnapped healer Tiana and the trail is getting very close!

More insight into Princess Jess’s kidnapping will reveal a shocking revelation…

A shocking twist will come to light that will be revealing in a very macabre way…

A mother’s love is depicted in two different ways that showcases the lengths that some mothers will go to for the ultimate sacrifice…

Bring on book three we need more Declan and Ayden!

The sequel, book 2, does not disappoint. No, it's even better. The characters are further explored, we get to know Declanlan and Keelan better. And we also gain a better insight into the kingdom and the king, and certainly the queen, Isabel. And it's heartbreaking. We see this book is really fantastic. Declan's journey to adulthood, to completeness. Especially when he meets his mother and hears her story and sees who and what she is. Ayden is still there and he is also on his own journey. Who would have thought that Declan would be more of the 'mute' than he thought. Keelan who has fallen in love, but has to accept that the woman he is interested in is one of the kidnapped women. This story has so many twists and turns you wrong every time. It's a journey, a journey into the unknown, filled with a lot of magic and a little owl that has a lot to say. This 2nd book really won't disappoint you. No, now more than ever I want to know how this is going to end. Highly recommended.

Despite the abundance of action and entertaining elements, one of the biggest disappointments was the lack of resolution. As the book progresses, various storylines are introduced, each more intriguing than the last. However, none of these storylines receive satisfactory outcomes by the end of the book. This leaves readers with a sense of incompleteness, as it is clear that the book is a continuation of a series.

Another challenge was trying to keep up with the many characters, especially since I missed the first book in the series. Playing catch-up was difficult, and at times, it felt overwhelming to remember all the relationships and backstories. However, the author’s engaging writing style and well-developed characters made the effort worthwhile.

Despite the unresolved storylines and the challenge of keeping up with numerous characters, this book was a great read. The magic, mystery, and action elements are compelling, and the emotional depth adds a layer of richness to the story. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series to find out what happens next and hopefully get the closure that was missing in this installment.

Loved the first book in this Of Crowns & Quills series so was avidly awaiting this book and was definitely not disappointed! As you would expect from Casey and exceptionally well written mystical storyline and amazing characters. I thoroughly enjoyed following Declan and Keelan, the two brothers. The character development is perfectly paced as we follow Declan dealing with his new reality and journey of self discovery and feelings for Ayden. There is so much going on on the background it keeps you completely engrossed with all the twists and turns with Keelan away as he continues to investigate to get the truth, the amazing found family and all the goings on! Can't wait for the next book and this is definitely a re-read series once all the books are out!.

"An Archer’s Destiny," the second book in Casey Morales' "Of Crowns & Quills" series, masterfully blends fantasy, romance, and adventure. The story follows brothers Declan and Keelan on separate, perilous quests to save their kingdom from dark forces.
Casey excels in world-building and character development, with each character's perspective vividly portrayed, adding emotional depth to the narrative. The romance between Declan and Ayden provides a heartwarming counterpoint to the darker elements of the plot.
With its compelling plot twists and rich storytelling, "An Archer’s Destiny" is a must-read, even for those, like me, who are convinced they don’t like fantasy. Casey will prove you wrong.
This continuation promises further excitement and has left me eagerly anticipating the next installment.

This series has made me fall in love with fantasy all over again. Book 2 did not disappoint! Casey Morales has created a world of magical beauty. In this book, Declan is sent on a mission to a secret island to ask the Keeper of Magic a favor to save his world. He can't tell or take Ayden with him as he is sworn to secrecy. Just before he and Ayden part, Declan finds an owlet. She guides him on his journey.

Meanwhile, Declan's brother, Keelan, is off on a quest of his own, tracking the missing healer that was kidnapped by a cult known as the children. He is with his adopted father, the Mage, Atikus.

This book had me laughing, crying and holding my breath waiting to see what comes next. There is adventure and love. There are mystical beings. There is intrigue. I loved it all.

CROWNS AND QUILL CAREENING TOWARDS DISASTER.

Morales has managed to advance the twin storyline plot adroitly. It's not my favorite stylistic form, but I can see the author had to meld the two storylines or resort to two books. The bifricated story line is less cumbersome than numerous examples I've read or abandoned.
Unique twists are enjoyable, some less surprising than others. The loss of characters that the reader has been lead to be sympathetic toward tends to make me reserve investment in some developing characters. This is self-defense, which I guess means Morales does have me hooked.
The book is a worthy read, even though it feels more of a
transitional "passage". Now let's continue.

The saga continues. Declan, Ayden and Keelan are split up on separate missions. Declan finds out truths that rock him to his core. The countries prepare for war. This is indeed a second book in a trilogy that prepares you for the end of the series. Oh, there will be prequels but you are whipped into a frenzy by the deaths of friends and innocents, the betrayal of loyal loved ones and so much magic expended in training for an epic battle. You are tortured with a horrible cliffhanger that makes you grit your teeth until the next book. You have to have it NOW, but it's all about the waiting game. I received a copy of this book through Booksprout and this is my honest opinion.

Declan is on a journey that feels more like a dream. While his world is falling to pieces, he must learn the magic he thought he would never have. His first love, Ayden, was left behind while Declan goes to the island of magic.

Keelan, Declan's brother, is working an investigation that could cost him his life. Will Declan be able to save them all? Will he finally get to enjoy the live he so deserves? You'll have to come read this story with wonderful characters and amazing world building to find the answers.

Incredibly good story!

This story captures you from first page to last, and leaves you wanting More! The growing love of the main character and his partner is refreshing and Beautiful- not overly done. The relationship development with a missing parent adds a beautiful depth to the story as well as the banter with the Owl. The intrigues and challenges faced by side but deeply important characters adds completion to an already gripping plot. Sadness bites hard in the final chapter but moves you to needing to read more. Anyone who enjoys fantasy stories will LOVE this series.

EPIC, Still thrilling, still exciting. Declan and Keelan are on equally important separate missions, concerned for each other's safety and success. There are surprises, twists, turns and the unexpected. Lots of characters add to the quality of the story. The idea of successes are challenging and you read with hope and trepidation. The author, does an excellent job bringing you in and making you part of the story. Nicely done. Great cover art! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

An Archers Destiny continues Declan‘s story. It ties up some loose ends, but it also opens up some new questions and story lines. It has a surprising twist in that Declan isn’t the magic mute he thought he was. The world building is great and very contemporary as far as how people can be influenced. I also really enjoy that the book is written from the perspective of many of the characters. It gives more insight into the story than it usually would. Definitely recommend!

I agree with Ketura, and I wish I could read their complete review. I was enjoying the series, but the whole training ordeal became so tedious. I found myself thinking, “This better be relevant down the road or I’m going to be very cross” And the character of the owl with no filter… I’m sure she was supposed to be humorous and entertaining but I just found the character annoying and heavy handed. When she showed up at the beginning of Book 3, I gave up and returned the entire series to Kindle. Maybe I’m just not the target demographic for this book.

The story goes on in Book 2, with a dramatic speed towards the end. Some speculations hinted in Book 1 were confirmed, but the outcome was surprising nonetheless.
Introduction to the world of magic and complexity of Gifts, taxonomy of the whole system. Not too shallow, but also not too boringly dull and exhausting.
One, more than just "romantic" scene, in our modern time called "cyber-***" nicely spiced up the plot.
Thrilling and entertaining read. Looking forward to the next book. I want more of Ayden! 😉

An Archer’s Destiny by Casey Morales is the second book in the Of Crowns & Quills series. The adventure continues for Declan, Ayden and Keelan, the three of them in different missions.

Although there are a lot of characters and stories linked, the book is more focused on Declan. He’s sent on a secret mission to find the Keeper of Magic to help him save the world from an upcoming war. Once on the island and having found the Keeper, he discovers his own truth. Meanwhile, Keelan is on another mission, looking for the healer kidnapped by The Children, an ancient cult.

The surrounding characters are really well developed. Being able to have their points of view is enriching. They all make it a great novel. I loved the relationship between Declan and the owlet.

I’m usually not into fantasy books, but this saga has got me hooked. I totally recommend it. I’ll be waiting for the next book to see what comes next. What a cliffhanger to finish this with.
