The Devil's in the Details
The grass is green. The sky is blue. There is no such thing as werewolves. Those are just some of the absolutes in tabloid reporter Andrea Lockhart's world, regardless of the stories covered in The Naked Truth, the rag she works for. Then the photo of some mysterious creature in some backwards town on the other side of the country came across her editor's desk and next thing Andrea knows, she's traipsing through the woods of Woodbine, South Carolina, looking for a creature that most assuredly does not exist.
The investigation into the local legend of the werewolf doesn't start off as she expected. She gets caught in a hunter's snare, trussed up like a wild boar, and comes face to face with the most painful memory from her college days. Sean Hunter. The ratfink she'd gone to college with, took journalism courses with, and who had beat her out for the job of editor of the school's paper. She had been overweight and mousy back then, and she had a huge crush on him. Right up until he'd verbally shredded her after he got her job.
Now Sean is living in Woodbine and is editor of the town's weekly circulation. To make matters worse, not only is he intent on accompanying her on her assignment, but he's doing one of his own on her investigation into the werewolf - that she is still quite positive does not exist. This Halloween nightmare of an assignment just keeps getting better and better.
The conversation - a kind word for an ugly truth - that Sean had with the incredibly intelligent if socially awkward Andrea Lockhart back in college is still one of his greatest regrets. He'd been cruel, if well intentioned, and he knew it. Now she's come to Woodbine looking...wow...considerably different than she did back in the old days. She's gorgeous. Poised. Cool as a cucumber. And she obviously wants nothing to do with him.
He thought they'd been friends once, if very very casual ones. He certainly wouldn't mind becoming much closer than friends now. Her job doesn't make sense, though. She'd been on the fast track of a major journalism career at one time. Working for an exploitative tabloid is about as far removed from that as she could get and still be in the business. He should know. He's fairly far removed from the beat of his own high-powered career as a reporter for a major New York City paper.
He has his reasons for that, though. Sean is sure Andrea has hers as well. He intends to discover what those are...as well as a myriad of other details about the amazing woman...as he helps her in her investigation into a werewolf that he's not entirely sure he believes exists. Though he doesn't exactly disbelieve it, either.

I loved the concept of this book. I thought it was great, the X-Files-esque investigation into the Woodbine Werewolf sightings, the two reporters ferreting out evidence for and against the possibility, the developing proof of something existing, the certainty that it couldn't possibly be a werewolf, the worry that it was. Every element of that plotline worked quite nicely for me, and the investigative aspects were more cohesive, logical, believable, and tightly woven than in many romantic suspense books I've read.
Unfortunately the main characters gave me some trouble and I struggled mightily with the execution of the romance arc throughout the book. I also had some issues with the style of writing in the narrative in places, and got a little frustrated with the over-telling that bogged down the flow of the story and muddied the waters.
Andrea troubled me throughout the book. She was not light on backstory or defining characteristics, tons of them were tossed out, but they never seemed to be all that convincingly incorporated into the woman she has become. She's got a dead brother, dead best friend, survived a horrible accident, become the swan after a shy, ugly-duckling type youth...and despite all of that, there seemed to be little depth in Andrea's personality. Like the facts didn't really touch her, regardless of what readers are told.
What depth there was, especially when it came to her burgeoning relationship with Sean, never really dipped beneath surface concerns and pedestrian conflicts that had nothing to do with those major traumas in her past, and everything to do with one bitter conversation when they were in college. That seemed sort of superficial to me in context. Plus, she was such a yo-yo with her actions and emotions, not to mention her determination to leave, then stay, then leave, then stay, that I couldn't help but feel the whole relationship with Sean was transient.
Sean, on the other hand, struck me as a little too over-eager in his thoughts and feelings for Andrea. A little too quick to flare with jealousy, a little too intent on wanting her to stay...not telling her that, of course, just thinking it (because god forbid they have a mature conversation about their feelings and relationship intentions). He's a little too regretful about the things he said to her in the past, a little too...
Actually, that sums up my issues with Sean right there. He was just...a little too everything.
There was also way too much telling in the narrative for my tastes, especially things that didn't need to be told. In one case, after Andrea has spent significant time with Sean and it's clear that he's a good man, there is a scene between Andrea and her deceitful, aggressive ex-boyfriend. Following that scene I really didn't need a page of narration letting me know that Andrea has changed her mind about which one is the better man. It bogs down the pace of the story and spoon-feeds me information I'd rather glean on my own through character action and dialogue. That this particular example is also a total no-brainer didn't help matters, either.
Along with that issue, there were also some odd timeline jumps in the narrative that didn't make much sense to me. The story would be progressing along in real-time, then suddenly it would be the next morning or later that day. That's all well and good, I suppose, but then there would be a recap of what the characters had done in the interim and what new developments had occurred. So...why not just keep it in real time and show us instead of recapping? Those little jumps popped up throughout the book, seemed random, and struck me as a peculiar stylistic choice.
I ended up feeling frustrated by this book. I truly enjoyed the external conflict and the execution of the investigative elements surrounding it. I even liked the secondary characters and thought the main characters were great when they weren't dealing with the emotional or romantic aspects of the story. The romance was such a problem for me, though, and the execution of the book bothered me so much in places, that I just didn't feel good about the overall reading experience.

Cry Wolf is Angela Campbell’s debut novel, and it’s a cute, sweet contemporary romance with a little werewolf tossed in to mix things up. I was hoping that this was the beginning to a series, given the ending (more on that later), but after checking out her webpage, I think it’s a stand-alone novel. Either way, you’ll definitely enjoy this book out just in time for Halloween.
Andrea Lockheart is a reporter for the tabloid The Naked Truth, and her editor has sent her to investigate rumors of werewolf sightings in Woodbine, South Carolina. She certainly isn’t expecting to run into Sean Hunter, former senior editor of her university paper. He’s the Woodbine paper’s editor now, and Andrea isn’t thrilled that she has to work with him, since he said some cruel remarks to her when they parted ways in college. She’d always hoped that their next meeting would involve some sort of acknowledgement of her stellar career, rather than his discovering her hanging upside down from a makeshift “werewolf trap.”
Sean doesn’t immediately recognize Andi Lockheart from college. This new Andi is stunning and clearly not interested in his help, but he owes her an apology after being such a jerk in college. Sean’s move to Woodbine to be with his sister and her kids is a far cry from writing for the New York Times, but he’s definitely enjoying the slower pace of his new life, especially since it allows him to spend time helping Andrea with her investigation. When Andrea experiences her own werewolf sighting, she and Sean begin to take the rumors more seriously and the two find themselves spending more and more time together. Can the two find a future together searching for the truth about the local werewolf?
I really enjoyed the romance in this novel. The majority of the book focuses on the relationship between Sean and Andrea, rather than the werewolf of the title, and that’s part of its appeal. Andrea is a compelling heroine with a difficult past. She’s a very talented and hardworking writer, despite writing about celebrities for a tabloid, and her shared past with Sean is an awkward one that threatens to undermine her hard won self-confidence when the two meet again. Sean is one sexy editor, and he manages to redeem himself from his being a total jerk in college. His focus on his family and concern for Andrea demonstrate that his changes are sincere.
The werewolf aspect of the novel was interesting as well. I like that Andrea starts out doubting the veracity of the claims and gradually begins to believe in the sightings as her investigation continues. I think making the romance the central focus of the novel was particularly effective, and the werewolf mystery starts to pick up about halfway into the book, which causes the pace to pick up.
Unfortunately, the werewolf mystery wasn’t completely resolved to my satisfaction, leaving us with a bit of a cliffhanger. I liked that the romance between Andrea and Sean was tied up nicely, but I wanted more explanation about the actual werewolf. Initially I assumed that this was the first book in a series, and we would learn more in subsequent books, but as I mentioned earlier, Ms. Campbell’s webpage indicates that this is a stand-alone novel, and her next book will be in a series set in a different world. Cry Wolf is only 87,000 words long, so there’s definitely room for more background about the werewolf, and the open ending definitely detracted from my enjoyment of the book.
Overall, however, this was a really sweet romance, and I very much enjoyed it. I liked Ms. Campbell’s insights into the world of journalism, and her experience writing in that world has translated well into fiction writing. I’ll definitely be looking for more of her work in the future!

All the bells and whistles
I loved the story. It really had everything necessary for a great read. I think an epilogue leading to a book for Meg and Trey would have been a great idea. But, I guess the author was done with love and mystery in Woodbine.

Any Triggers/Warnings: None really. The hero has had mostly casual relationships involving casual hook-ups in his past while the heroine has only been with one man who ended up cheating on her in the past. Also, the heroine had been an ugly duckling in college who bloomed afterwards with loosing a little weight (nothing major) and learning a little bit of makeup/hair/fashion. It was kind of weird, because it is said that she was in a wreck and had plastic surgery to aid with the scarring. Supposedly this also helped the heroine bloom into a beauty but that's not how things work in real life. Major trauma plastic surgery doesn't turn a duck into a swan. That whole line of background honestly made me uncomfortable and I'll go into more detail in my review.
Overall Rating: 3-3.5 stars
Would You Read More Books By This Author: Yes. This was her first book but I read it last. She has really grown as a writer and while this one isn't bad at all I'd say it's an average read for me in the romance category. I really love her Pet Detective series and those are definitely above average.

This was a pretty good romance. There were some aspects that I really liked and some that didn't work too well for me. The whole ugly duckling transformation the heroine had undergone made be a bit uncomfortable. Besides what I mentioned above about not being convinced by the plastic surgery, I didn't really get the vibe that Sean would have fallen for Andrea if she hadn't had a transformation. That's, unfortunately, probably realistic but the book tries to assert something different. I never was convinced. Just like Sean's transformation from an arrogant, somewhat self absorbed guy in the past to being a super great guy in the present was a little off somehow. I believed he was a pretty good guy in the present but it never jived with who he'd been or how he'd made the transformation.
The suspense plot has something to do with figuring out what the weird sighting of some creature really are and if there is any danger. It was fairly interesting but lagged a little in a few places. It won't be for those people who want total realism. I can really see improvement with this author's future books with pacing and plot advancement. While in this one information can be given in a slightly clunky fashion her later books are very seamless.
Ultimately, I rooted for this couple and liked who they were in the present. However, I was still a little thrown off by the beauty transformation part of the plot and the good guy acting briefly like a jerk in his past. Some of that has to do with my own personal preferences and won't bother everyone.

You know what makes this book even more fun to read? It's actual release date is Oct 31st :) I got an e-arc copy from net galley - WOW I'm glad I did :)
I'm so excited to tell you about this book!
Here I thought it would be a typical romance book - My first thoughts after reading the blurb was that the reporter guy that's following her around was the werewolf -
But NO WAY! This is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT type of werewolf story! I was at the edge of my seat for the whole thing! I couldn't put it down! I finally caved and fell asleep at 1 am the other night - only to be woken up by the image of this very werewolf standing in front of my car just looking at me - and it was as freaky in my dream as it was in this book! HA!
Ok the book starts off with - lol Ok first of all we meet Andrea Lockhart - and she's a reporter for the Naked Truth tabloids - a nationwide magazine. They sent her to this little town because when they were going over ideas at her office, she was the only one that laughed when someone spoke of the werewolf sighting in Woodbine.
Ok now for Andrea - Andrea doesn't have a big streak of luck -It was suppose to be a simple story, in and out, instead she had been strung up in the woods - by her ankle, tied to a tree, with her cell phone laying on the ground just out of her reach. She tried not to panic but with the sun starting to set, she couldn't help herself.
That's when she meets Reed - The older teen/young man started to panic when he saw her stranded on the tree - trying to help her down made Andrea panic a little more. He wasn't helping. Fortunately for her, he had his cell phone and knew just who to call - Sean Hunter...
No.. it couldn't be the same Sean Hunter - it's a pretty common name, no , it's just a coincidence, right?? Only it wasn't - when Sean Hunter walked up to Andrea and helped her down, she knew right away it was the same guy she had a big crush on in journalism school. Thank goodness he wouldn't recognize her. She had been in an accident a few years ago. She was no longer the short chubby woman with short stringy hair dressed in baggy jeans and over sized sweatshirts. He'll never recognize her now
And he didn't - at least not until she left and he learned her name.
That's when Sean decided to write a story on Andi Lockhart’s story - he was going to become her shadow and follow her everywhere - even help her out with her story.
Andrea knew who Sean was, and remember the painful things he said to her back in college. there was NO WAY she was going to stumble back into those feelings she had before he hurt her. But Sean had a different idea - we learned why he was so agitated back then, and his reasons - though as stupid as they were, justified in his remarks to her. He had changed though - a lot. He really grew up, and he regretted his mistakes he made in college, and now he had a chance to make things right again.
Ok the book wasn't completely based on their getting together - although those were the perks, and had a lot of "Awwww" moments :) I loved it :)
The book was really a great mystery. What the Heck was that werewolf type thing? Was it really a werewolf? no one believes in werewolves - well no one but those who had seen it in this little town of Woodbine. But not everyone agreed what they saw was a werewolf - some people did. Andrea didn't know what to think. She didn't believe werewolves were real, but she did believe they saw something. Sean had never seen it, so he didn't speculate either way.
The story gets spooky when they go werewolf hunting. Stake outs, and roaming old abandoned farm houses. Late night drives with huge corn stalks on both sides of the roads - waiting for anything to jump out of them.

This book keeps you in suspense clear until the very end. WOW! I was so impressed with the ending of this book!
If you're looking for something spooky to read this Halloween - I really recommend this book :) Especially if you live out in the middle of no where in a small town surrounded by woods - or cornstalks :)

Here I thought it would be a typical romance book - My first thoughts after reading the blurb was that the reporter guy that's following her around was the werewolf -
But NO WAY! This is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT type of werewolf story! I was at the edge of my seat for the whole thing! I couldn't put it down! I finally caved and fell asleep at 1 am the other night - only to be woken up by the image of this very werewolf standing in front of my car just looking at me - and it was as freaky in my dream as it was in this book! HA!
Ok the book starts off with - lol Ok first of all we meet Andrea Lockhart - and she's a reporter for the Naked Truth tabloids - a nationwide magazine. They sent her to this little town because when they were going over ideas at her office, she was the only one that laughed when someone spoke of the werewolf sighting in Woodbine.
Ok now for Andrea - Andrea doesn't have a big streak of luck -It was suppose to be a simple story, in and out, instead she had been strung up in the woods - by her ankle, tied to a tree, with her cell phone laying on the ground just out of her reach. She tried not to panic but with the sun starting to set, she couldn't help herself.
That's when she meets Reed - The older teen/young man started to panic when he saw her stranded on the tree - trying to help her down made Andrea panic a little more. He wasn't helping. Fortunately for her, he had his cell phone and knew just who to call - Sean Hunter...
No.. it couldn't be the same Sean Hunter - it's a pretty common name, no , it's just a coincidence, right?? Only it wasn't - when Sean Hunter walked up to Andrea and helped her down, she knew right away it was the same guy she had a big crush on in journalism school. Thank goodness he wouldn't recognize her. She had been in an accident a few years ago. She was no longer the short chubby woman with short stringy hair dressed in baggy jeans and over sized sweatshirts. He'll never recognize her now
And he didn't - at least not until she left and he learned her name.
That's when Sean decided to write a story on Andi Lockhart’s story - he was going to become her shadow and follow her everywhere - even help her out with her story.
Andrea knew who Sean was, and remember the painful things he said to her back in college. there was NO WAY she was going to stumble back into those feelings she had before he hurt her. But Sean had a different idea - we learned why he was so agitated back then, and his reasons - though as stupid as they were, justified in his remarks to her. He had changed though - a lot. He really grew up, and he regretted his mistakes he made in college, and now he had a chance to make things right again.
Ok the book wasn't completely based on their getting together - although those were the perks, and had a lot of "Awwww" moments :) I loved it :)
The book was really a great mystery. What the Heck was that werewolf type thing? Was it really a werewolf? no one believes in werewolves - well no one but those who had seen it in this little town of Woodbine. But not everyone agreed what they saw was a werewolf - some people did. Andrea didn't know what to think. She didn't believe werewolves were real, but she did believe they saw something. Sean had never seen it, so he didn't speculate either way.
The story gets spooky when they go werewolf hunting. Stake outs, and roaming old abandoned farm houses. Late night drives with huge corn stalks on both sides of the roads - waiting for anything to jump out of them.

Andrea Lockhart is a tabloid reporter doing a story on a werewolf in the town of Woodbine, South Carolina, the oddest little town she’s ever come across, when she is literally caught upside down and completely off guard by her college crush Sean Hunter. He once broke her heart in a cruel and cold way and he’s literally the last person she wants to see. But as the editor and jack of all trades for the Woodbine Dispatch, Andrea has little choice but to work very closely with Sean.
Though I’m still a little wary, as a relatively new blogger, of reading debut works by new authors, when Angela Campbell requested I read and review Cry Wolf, I accepted. I’m truly honored when an author thinks to ask me to read and review, though wary because you never know if the experience will end well for both parties. I’m happy to say this experience ends well -- for me at least!
I will be honest and say that though I’m totally into the werewolf and vampire craze going on now, I was a little skeptical about a story of a town that reported seeing a ‘real’ werewolf. I wasn’t sure it would be my cup of tea. But the writing in this book is so well done, that I couldn’t help but get drawn into the story from page one. I was totally invested in the investigation for the Woodbine Werewolf. I shivered at the scary and tense moments and I bit my nails guessing if there really was a real werewolf or not. Very good suspense writing!
I was eager to find out more about Sean and Andrea’s past together and separately, and I desperately wanted them to have their happily ever after. Andrea had been hurt pretty deeply by words Sean had said to her in a moment of high stress and it was all the more crushing because of the feelings she harbored for him. What I appreciated about their relationship is that they both worked to overcome the obstacles in their way because they just couldn’t deny the love and care they had for one another. The love happened gradually and realistically and the steam, though mild, was very well written as well.
If you’re looking for a sweet romantic paranormal-ish suspenseful read with great writing, definitely check out Cry Wolf. It’s a worthy debut by what I believe is a promising new author!

Angela Campbell is an overachiever with a soft spot for men who dress funny. Superman, Charlie Chaplin, Dracula…she loves them all (and don’t get her started on ‘70s Elvis!). In her spare time, she can usually be found browsing comic book stores or with her rear end planted somewhere watching a Universal Horror Classics movie marathon—that is, if she’s not obsessing over a good book. She currently channels all of her enthusiasm and geekiness into blogging and fiction writing. Her greatest ambition is to write a Pulitzer prize–winning novel, but pesky little genre fiction keeps leaping into her imagination, screaming, “Write me! Write me!”
A mild-mannered (and award-winning) reporter with almost 15 years experience as a general assignment reporter, features editor and layout person, Angela has also worked as a production assistant on TV shows, small film projects and commercials. She’s still trying to decide if she’ll write and direct her own book-to-film adaptations or let the big boys handle it. This book was interesting from the start.
Andrea Lockhart is a reporter from a tabloid called "The Naked Truth". She was once a touted and famed reporter for a mainstream newspaper. Her latest Editing Manager has sent her to Woodbine, South Carolina to do a story about werewolf sightings. As she is out looking for information, hunting for clues to the authenticity of the sightings she gets snapped in a werewolf trap and is left hanging...literally. After she gets rescued and begins her hunt she runs into the one person she never thought she's see again, Sean Hunter, a former collegiate classmate and now a local paper editor. She is initially happy that Sean doesn't recognize her but pangs of the spark she has start a new fire again. She realizes there is something there for Sean and its genuine.
Sean initially didn't know that the beauty in front of him was his old classmate, she had changed since they graduated. He initially felt the old big brother instinct kick in, but this time other things begin to come out too. Did she still remember those words he said to her back in those days? Why is she working for a tabloid and not a mainstream publication? As his feelings for her grows and she tries to keep him at a distance he begins to think someone hurt her, and it made him angry to see that someone would do that, not realizing part if it WAS caused by him. He comes to find that his remaining family need him but so does Andrea. His nephew has an encounter of his own, and it shakes everyone up, but Andrea also needs him as this predator is becoming bolder and her deadline is only days away.
As they talk to townspeople Andrea comes to realize not everyone likes the publicity that comes from her being there. Many are skeptical and don't believe a thing, claiming its a hoax by some locals. others who have seen it don't share what they've seen because of the skeptics in town. With a determination she relentlessly pursues those who stick with the claim they saw a werewolf, and she finds out that there May be some credibility to their stories. Sean tries to keep her from coming under fire, but the word spreads and things start to get hairy... One night while staking out a local sighting area. After that the sightings start to increase and even the local animals know a predator is lurking in their town. Sean is helping her get the information she needs for her story, not realizing until later that Sean is writing a story of his own...about HER!
Sen and Andrea make things work to get what they both want, but their past keeps pushing them apart. You'll have to read to find out how the mystery ends and if Sean and Andrea can overcome the heartbreak and pain to find their happy ending.
Angela spins a clever romance spiked with mystery. Andrea and Sean have a lot to work through to find out they what they need besides solving the mystery is each other. Andrea still feels hurt by some of Sean's actions. Sean knows he was in the wrong for what he did, but his intentions were in her best interest. They are both torn between what they want and what they need to do. Ms. Campbell delivers in this story. I loved the mix of mystery and romance and how it was blended. A great read for those who like to see love bloom in the midst of something unusual.

Cry Wolf is fun and sweet romantic mystery with a paranormal-ish twist. Andrea “Andi” Lockhart is a reporter for a famous tabloid magazine who is sent to the small town of Woodbine, SC to investigate the local werewolf sightings. Unfortunately she finds that her old competitor and the man who beat her out for editor of the college newspaper is now living in Woodbine and runs the town paper. As a young man Sean Hunter felt that Andi was too soft and said some cruel things to her for what he thought was “her own good.” Now Sean’s the last person Andi wants to see or work with but she has to if she’s to crack the story and find out the truth about the Woodbine Werewolf.
I was pleasantly surprised by Cry Wolf. I am a huge fan of paranormal books. Give me a vampire or demon and I’ll read it. It was a nice change of pace to read a book that had was about werewolves but wasn’t necessarily a paranormal story. The plot was well written and well paced and I was totally sucked into the mystery. I wanted to find out if the werewolf was real just as much as Andi did.
I loved the romance in this story. Andi’s got a big chip on her shoulder from what happened with Sean in college. I don’t really blame her at first. Sean’s words were cruel and, to the insecure young woman that Andi was, I can see how much it would have hurt. Even though it’s been years and Andi is a successful journalist now, she still feels like she has something to prove to Sean and perhaps to herself. Sean, on the other hand, isn’t the big time editor he set out to be. Seeing Andi makes him realize that a jerk he was in college. The years have changed Sean and he’s no longer the selfish, ambitious man he used to be. Actions speak louder than words and Sean does everything he can to help Andi and keep her from becoming werewolf bait during the investigation.
As rivals, Sean and Andi have that great antagonistic chemistry that I love to read. While Sean and Andi have great chemistry, the loves scenes themselves are pretty mild. Don’t get me wrong, they did get hot and heavy a few times but, just as things were really heating up...it would fast forward to the next morning. Personally I prefer a little more smut in my romance books but those who like their hanky panky on the lighter side will enjoy this.
I had a great time reading this. The small town setting was perfect for the mysterious werewolf sightings. It was fun following Andi and Sean on their investigation and meeting all of the quirky townspeople. And the story definitely keeps you guessing right up to the very end. A fun debut novel from Angela Campbell. I am excited to see what she comes up with next.

Andrea Lockhart went from being an award winning journalist for the Chicago Tribune to hunting werewolves for a tabloid in Podunk, South Carolina. If that wasn’t ego deflating enough, she runs into her one time college crush turned arch nemesis while she is hanging upside down after being caught in a snare trap. Determined to keep the upper hand this time, Andrea doesn’t acknowledge the fact that she remembers Sean Hunter, and he sure doesn’t seem to connect the sophisticated, together professional woman with the chubby introvert he used to torment in college. Sean Hunter is the first to admit he was a bastard in college, but he had his own issues he was working through. He is fascinated by the changes in Andrea and makes no secret of the fact that he wants to renew old friendships. If only that pesky werewolf would quit showing up, he might be able to work his own brand of magic.
Well, this turned into a very traumatic and heartbreaking book for me. Ugh! My chest still hurts, but I cant' tell you why without giving spoilers. Just remember I live with wolves everyday and they are very near and dear to my heart. The fact that Ms. Campbell can pull that much emotion from a reader is a true testament of her skill as a writer, and while extremely painful for me, it bodes well for the rest of her audience who may not share my overdeveloped empathy for wild animals. Overall, this was a very entertaining story and had a relatively cheerful tone. Yes, it was about a scary creature stalking the unwary citizens of a small rural South Carolina town, but it wasn’t overly dark. It was mostly a fun book with laudable, interesting characters. It captured my interest from the very first and held it until the very end.
What I found most striking about Cry Wolf was that it was the talent of the author that made it such a excellent book, and not the graphic content. Some books hold readers attention merely by shock factor, like a car wreck. Cry Wolf was not graphically explicit in either the sexual content or the gore factor, yet I was totally enthralled. The heroine, Andrea, exceeded my requirements in all areas. (something that almost never happens) Her character really impressed me to no end. I had not one "eye twitch" moment with Andrea, in fact most of the time I was actively cheering her on. The snark quotient in the dialogue was more than gracious and the hero was more than smexy. Would it have hurt my feelings to have added a bit more smut to the story? Nooo, but then I'm a perv like that. It still didn't take away from the story which still contained a very strong romantic thread. I am completely confident of my recommendation of this book and know with 100% certainty that fans of a good story will enjoy this.

Sorry, no rippling teen werewolf abs or sparklepire foes in this tale. Just a good old-fashioned story of a reporter out to debunk an urban legend.
I love that a modern story involving a werewolf can be categorized as a contemporary realistic book. Realism FTW! I'm so ready for the paranormal phase to be over and get back to the good old-fashioned ghost, monster, and urban legend stories. I prefer to outrun scary creatures, not date them.
Before getting to the heart of the review, I do have one confession to make*: I have a large weakness for stories involving reporters and/or editors from small-town newspapers, or from big papers sent to small towns. It has to do with some of my college-hood dreams. I majored in journalism, later working as a reporter and then an editor at a large metropolitan newspaper. Honestly, I'm still a reporter at heart. Even now I get all squiggly inside thinking about how much fun it'd be to spend a few years working at a small-town newspaper.**
So when I saw that Cry Wolf incorporated a) a big-city reporter coming to a small-town to investigate an b) urban myth in the form of a werewolf, with a c) romance likely to develop, I was a goner. Absolutely perfect.
That said, it was a nice story on the merits of the writing and characters as well. I'll admit I don't have many nitpicks, but probably more so because I got lost in the story. Which, honestly, should be the goal of every writer.
It's a fun read, with a romance that feels rather realistic (including sexy bits, if you're at all concerned about that), and a kitten. How could it not be good when there's a rescued kitten? I don't think it's possible.
Joking aside, I liked this book. Four stars to the author for an enjoyable ride. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys light, fun romances with a touch of mystery.
*I mention this now because there is a very good possibility that other books of this nature will cross the pages of this blog, and fairly soon. There are a couple of them winking at me from my TBR pile. Those little minxes.

Cry Wolf by Angela Campbell is a sweet contemporary love story with an air of paranormal mystery as part of the main plot. Andrea Lockhart and Sean Hunter used to be friends and co-workers in college; but since then, they have not been in contact with one another.
Andrea is sent to Woodbine, South Carolina to research an article on a werewolf sighting. While on assignment with the Naked Truth, a tabloid publication, she finds herself in an awkward position (literally) when she reconnects with Sean who is the editor of the local paper, the Woodbine Weekly. Her chance in counter with her former college crush is amusing.
A lot has happen in their respective lives since they knew each other in college . Due to those fortuitous events, they have both grown up having been drastically shaped by those circumstances. As Andrea and Sean spend more time together to uncover the werewolf mystery, they realize how much they care for each other but are afraid to reveal the truth of those feelings to the other.
The delivery of the story starts off slowly. Overall, this a good debut novel and I am looking forward to seeing how Angela Campbell matures as a writer.

Andrea is sent to Woodbine, South Carolina to research an article on a werewolf sighting. While on assignment with the Naked Truth, a tabloid publication, she finds herself in an awkward position (literally) when she reconnects with Sean who is the editor of the local paper, the Woodbine Weekly. Her chance in counter with her former college crush is amusing.
A lot has happen in their respective lives since they knew each other in college . Due to those fortuitous events, they have both grown up having been drastically shaped by those circumstances. As Andrea and Sean spend more time together to uncover the werewolf mystery, they realize how much they care for each other but are afraid to reveal the truth of those feelings to the other.

Andrea Lockhart is a reporter for a NY based tabloid, The Naked Truth and has been sent to Woodbine, South Carolina, to research a possible werewolf sighting. Andrea believes the notion to be ridiculous but is determined to make the most of it. Her investigation doesn’t start off too well when she is literally caught upside down and is rescued by none other than her College crush and nemesis Sean Hunter.
Sean is working as the editor for Woodbine Weekly and remembers a very different Andrea from back in College, they parted on bad terms and he has always regretted his actions and the way he treated her but felt at the time he was doing the right thing.
Andrea and Sean’s personal lives have been shaped based on circumstances beyond both their control, they have both changed immensely since their college days and working together to find the truth behind the werewolf rumors also bought for Andrea a sense of closure from the past and forged a new relationship with Sean as a possible future. I enjoyed seeing their relationship progress as the investigation did.
I liked the mystery of not knowing whether there was an actual werewolf or not or whether Andrea was being taken for a fool; the suspense certainly had me intrigued and I really liked the small town setting of Woodbine; the location seemed idyllic and tranquil.
I enjoyed Ms Campbell’s writing style, the characters were each likeable, the pacing for me was initially slow but it picked up and left me anticipating more.

I was fully expecting to read about shapeshifters in this book. What I wasn't expecting was the town legend of the Woodbine Werewolf. It was a pleasant surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Andrea Lockhart finds herself in Woodbine, South Carolina in search of a werewolf that has gotten a lot of attention the past two years. Not the usual story she is assigned, she throws herself into finding facts that prove this creature is either true or a hoax. From the second she stepped foot in Woodbine, she finds she is experiencing a streak of bad luck. While hanging upside down from a tree in the woods by a trap from a local, a kid that works at the local paper finds her and calls for help.
To Andrea's horror, she finds Sean Hunter, the jerk who beat her in the running for editor of their college newspaper and the man who told her she would never make it as a reporter. Once over the shock of realizing who he is, her next thought is why he is in Woodbine instead of somewhere bigger.

I have to say, this book was not what I expected. I received my review copy a long tie ago and I guess I forgot it was a contemporary romance not a paranormal one, so I kept expecting more supernatural stuff. My confusion is entirely on me, not the publisher or the author, but I think it affected my reading. Don't get me wrong, I did really enjoy the story and the characters.
Andrea and Sean are a nice pair. They went to college together, parted ways after Sean was incredibly rude and cutting, and now they find themselves in the same town without any warning. Their history comes out pretty quickly so that we can understand my Andrea isn't thrilled to run into Sean, despite how much she's changed. Thankfully for the HEA, Sean is no longer a jerk -- he's actually a rather upstanding guy. The two of them have chemistry that's through the roof, which makes the sexy scenes quite steamy. My main complaint about the lead characters has to do with Andrea -- the author's given her a lot of tragedy in her back story but it's not explored as much as I would have liked. It's not that I wanted Andrea to be damaged, it's just that I felt like she was occasionally shallow. But these little flashes were definitely outweighed by her smarts and determination, which I truly appreciated.
In terms of the werewolf business, I thought that Angela Campbell resolved the whole idea in a reasonable manner. I wasn't 100% satisfied with it but it was the most plausible outcome given that this book is rooted in reality. The storyline gave the romance some extra thrills, which was great. I look forward to seeing what else Angela Campbell produces.

I really liked this book. At first, I wasn't sure what it was going to be, but the book was so much more and much deeper than I expected. This is the story of Andrea and Sean. They went to college together, and being the top journalism students in their class, were often competing against each other. Early on in their college lives, they'd actually been friends, but by the time they graduated, they were much less. And on Andi's part, there were lots of hurt feelings over the way things ended with them. Now it's ten years later and they both have had high's and low's since then and have matured into much different people.
I loved everything about this story line. I enjoyed the fact that they are both journalists. I liked that they had a history although a lot of it wasn't a good history. I even liked the werewolf angle to the story. It made for great reading and even a pretty good suspense line to keep the story really interesting. I never thought I could get so caught up in a werewolf story that wasn't flat-out paranormal.
Overall this is a great book. There are two fabulous characters who aren't without their flaws, but manage to stay completely likable. There are several side characters who were equally fun. I especially loved Reed...teenage photographer (i.e. Jimmy to Kent and Lois Lane...I loved that analogy!) I had no idea how the werewolf story was going to tie up, but thought it worked perfectly even if the final scene did read a little too much like an 80's horror movie (and the only reason this book got an A- rating vs. an A rating.)

Cry Wolf is an unusual werewolf mystery. It is more modern and truthful and not based in so much paranormal fantasy. Andrea Lockhart is a reporter for a leading Tabloid and usually gets to work on celebrity pieces but her new boss who happens to be an ex sends her to woodbine, South Carolina to chase after a wereworlf story. It isn't until she meets the local Paper Editor, Sean Hunter that things get interesting. Sean Hunter had been her mentor and competitor in college and she had a crush on him. But Sean told her she would never make it as a reporter because she was too nice. Andrea is still smarting from the last meeting and isn't sure what to make of this new Sean. Andrea is determined to make and break the real story of the Werewolf and accepts help from Sean as professional curtesy. Soon the pages heat up with attraction and passion. But can Andrea get past her feelings in the past and trust that Sean has always had her best interests in mind?

One of those books that starts out kind of slow but seems to keep on getting better and better. It is a contemporary 'werewolf' story involving a tablold reporter who really doesn't believe in werewolves, who is sent to a small community to write a story for a Halloween issue, but who ends up encountering not only a story that is far greater than she originally perceived it will be, but an old flame whose disregard has hurt her in the past. Lots of colorful characters that populate a story that one wonders where it will end and how all the issues in the story will be resolved. Certainly kept my interest level from start to finish. Just a really satisfying read!

I'm starting to think maybe contemporary romances just aren't my cup of tea anymore. This one was a bit frustrating because I initially found it really appealing, but 2/3rds the way in, everything seemed to just start wandering aimlessly in circles. By the end I was skimming and kind of annoyed by the so-called "resolution" of the whole werewolf arc.
I did enjoy the relationship conflict and character development of our hero and heroine. I also liked the secondary characters and the small-town setting. It just felt like it needed a little bit more plot editing, maybe culling it down to a novella or short story.

Happily, this wasn't the fantasy-laden chick-lit book that I was expecting to read.
Yes, there is a romance involved; but it was more of a side story to the supernatural mystery. And yes, "werewolves" lead the current reader to think Team Jacob, but the werewolf in question luckily wasn't part of the previously mentioned romance in any way. The werewolf is treated in a very grounded, scientific way. The cryptozoological aspects were explored, not exploited.
I enjoyed the fact that the characters were normal... I tire of super-humans masquerading as common people - (think Jason Bourne or Robert Langdon). This was a realistic suspense with the air of mystery sprinkled throughout.

This book surprised me in that it was a book about a werewolf but neither MCs were the werewolf. Instead it focused more on a legend about the Woodbine Werewolf and the MCs were trying to figure out what exactly it was. The relationship between Andrea and Sean is built on a friendship they had during college and she fights the attraction they have now. It was a slow build and was very sweet. I also really liked the supporting characters that ranged from a helpful high school kid to Sean's sister and even an irate councilman. Can't wait to read more from Ms. Campbell.

I'm a huge fan of Destination Truth on the SyFy Channel. The whole searching for mythical creatures has always fascinated me. When I read the blurb for Cry Wolf, I knew I had to read it. Angela Campbell didn't let me down. I loved the whole concept of the book. Her writing is quirky and had me laughing out loud at points. The romance is sweet with that heart-warming appeal that I love. Add in a little on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense in a few scenes and I had myself a winner. Can't wait to read more from this author!

I loved the opening scene with Andrea literally hanging upside in a trap. Good pacing throughout, and I liked the tension between Andrea and her old college crush/nemesis Sean. NOT a paranormal romance with a werewolf, but rather a romance between two reporters investigating the so-called Woodbine Werewolf. Is it a hoax, a previously unknown animal species or something supernatural? A nice balance between the romance and mystery plotlines.

This was kind of a unexpected read, and I really enjoyed it. It presents a fresh take on the werewolf romances I'm used to. Loved the author's writing style. I laughed, a lot. I was also on the edge of my bed toward the end. Nice blend of genres here.
